Planning for Blank Gameweek 28 and chip season

Last time out, I wrote that my team was treading water. Well, not much has changed. I’m still struggling to get inside the top 100k (having been around the 115k mark for the last five weeks).

I’m not going to bore you by going through my team and, in all honesty, I don’t have much to report other than my squad is doing… well… okay.

It seems crazy that we have less than a third of the season to go, with just 11 Gameweeks remaining. It feels like each week is crucial, and it’s not the time to be treading water! So, what are some of the things that might make the difference? I have been pondering…

That third Liverpool slot

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m). Mohamed Salah (£12.8m). Does anyone out there not own these players? Let me rephrase… does anyone out there not own these players and is doing well?

Along with Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m), these guys are pretty much nailed down in every squad I see on the boards, on Twitter and in my mini leagues.

As people lose patience with players like Jamie Vardy (£9.7m), Anthony Martial (£7.9m) and John Lundstram (£5.0m), who have been so integral to our squads at some point in this season (all still in my own team by the way), no one can doubt the pedigree of Trent and Mo.

However, the third Liverpool spot is pretty contentious. The trouble is, as I see it, that there is a battle between the consistency of points from Liverpool’s defence (10 clean sheets in the last 11) and the potential of huge hauls from the talents of their attackers (11 goals in the last five).

Sadio Mané (£12.2m) has been out, and now he’s back. Roberto Firmino (£9.7m) has been delivering decent returns. You feel like there might be a brace or a hattrick for these players. However, the likes of Virgil Van Dijk (£6.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), and even Joe Gomez (£5.3m) are quietly racking up the points.

I see more and more people flocking to Firmino, but I actually feel like he may be the weakest player of all the above. Two double-digit returns mask five blanks in the last eight Gameweeks. His stats continue to be fantastic but are matched by the likes of Raúl Jiménez (£7.7m) or even Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.1m). The Brazilian’s quite erratic form is a problem when we have strikers playing well and delivering points.

Midfield and defence is a different proposition though. As I look through the lists of players, it’s very hard to pick any that really stand out to me in these positions. To me, this tells me that prioritising Liverpool players is the way to go, to ensure the best quality players from a small pond.

Mané is an unbelievable player, and will no doubt deliver for his owners from now until the end of the season. But he also costs over 12 million. I can get Robertson for nearly half that, or Van Dijk too. If they both carry on at their current rate, either of these options will smash 200 points for the season (and don’t forget Robertson has done this before). An unbelievable return.

If one of Salah or Mane are going to be your “go-to” captain option, is spending nearly a quarter of your budget on two players really the best play? I’m thinking not… double defence it is!

Blank Gameweeks

Ah, the Blank Gameweeks are approaching. The type of Gameweek which inevitably leads to Saturday morning texts from your friends being like “WHY ARE HALF MY TEAM NOT PLAYING?”. Noobs, the lot of them (although some of them are beating me, which really hurts…).

Some real basic advice for anyone reading… grab a bit of paper. Write down who in your squad has got a match in Blank Gameweek 28. If you notice you’ve got less than 11 active players, well, you need to be bringing in at least one more with a game that weekend.

I am always amazed by how many this catches out. We can expect hits as people freak out that they are only fielding seven or eight players, particularly as teams such as Manchester City, Sheffield United, Arsenal and Grealish FC also feature highly-owned players who will be missing out.

Quite simply, your bench is needed to cover these guys, and it’s a good opportunity to strengthen your squad.

Some cheap options to cover you in this blank could be the likes of Aaron Mooy (£4.8m) who plays a struggling Crystal Palace side at home, or the wonderful to watch Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), who faces Burnley.

Leicester also have a fantastic fixture against Norwich, so this might be a great excuse to get midfield options like Ayoze Perez (£6.2m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.0m).

What I love about the Blank Gameweek is that it gives you the excuse to go for players that you might not normally consider – because, well, what’s the harm? There’s no danger of a blanking player outscoring them! And, if you are thrifty, you can always Wildcard them out, presuming you still have this chip of course – which brings me on to my next topic.

The chips

Mane, Abraham and Vardy injury updates ahead of FA Cup fourth round weekend

Frankly, I am astounded that I’ve seen Bench Boosts and Wildcards being used at this stage by some veteran players. What on earth is going on? Everyone knows it is sacrilege to use your chips in a single Gameweek! Have people forgotten how to be sheep?!

I am of course being a bit facetious here (as I used my Triple Captain in a single Gameweek), but I do fear for those who are using this chips this early, for what looks to me, an excuse to bring in one player (the now-injured Son Heung-min (£10.0m)) or to help correct a spiralling season. We all know that Double Gameweeks are on the horizon and the chips… well, they are pretty much tailor-made for use during them.

I was burned earlier in the season with my decision to Triple Captain Vardy in a single Gameweek. While I know those who went with Mané are probably still reeling from their three points, hauls for Salah, Robertson, Trent… all go to show that a great chance of getting captain returns comes from when your player plays twice.

You’re simply putting yourself in the best possible position to get returns and, crucially, we don’t know what the Double Gameweeks are going to look like yet!

Using chips at this stage feels like you are going into the crucial part of the season under-armed and under-prepared. If your team is serviceable, or you can get a decent squad with just a few transfers, then my advice is to wait.

Wait until we have the information about who is playing, when they are playing and who they are playing.

Leave it as long as possible to gather as much information as you can before making the call. This puts you in the best position possible to maximise the chips that can completely transform your season.

The Wildcard, in particular, is always tempting, but your team might not be in the mess that you think it is. As I mentioned before, at the moment, the pool of players that we should be considering is pretty small, and so it’s likely that you already own decent players who aren’t as bad as you think they are. You may be Wildcarding for equally small fish, flopping round in an even smaller pond. Perhaps, in a few weeks, we’ll have bigger fish to catch and fry. And with that anecdote, I’m off for dinner. Any guesses what I’m having?

    Blank GW28 plans.

Using my FTs I can field XI in GW 28 but I must play Hayden who look like 1 pointer as probably lost his place. I will bench SHU def, KDB and Grealish.

Is it worth to keep Grealish (and play Hayden) or sell for -4 to Traore/H.Barnes?

Im also looking at BGW31 as probably wont use my FH and Grealish (Villa) has 50% chance to have a game in that GW so maybe it is not worth to sell him with that form and a chance to play in GW31?

    (Grealish: blank, Lei, Che, 50%blank/New)
    (Barnes: Nor, Avl, Wat, blank)
    (Traore: Tot, Bha, Whu, Bou)

I have Barnes and I'm enjoying having him. Do you fancy Villa scoring against LEI (away) and CHE (home)?

Grealish look like can score in any game but those arent easy plus Barnes has really nice fix. Not easy decision here plus its a hit.

Surely Newc performance the other day means Hayden back?
Barnes looks more exciting than Traore, but will give you another blank (is this 100%?) in a few more weeks.

Not sure about Hayden but even if he starts he is 2-3pts material.
Lei will almost defo blank in 31 as Wolves defo play so again if I decide to sell Grealish its not easy decision between Traore and Barnes.

    Last comment on page 2.
    The irony given this thread but I'm tempted to Bench Boost GW27 because my players all look like relatively tasty fixtures;

    McCarthy
    TAA, Robbo, Stephens
    Mane (c), KDB, Barnes, Traore
    Auba, Jimi, Ings

    Button, Lund, Williams, Hayden

    B 1.8M | FT 1

Button upgrade as he's the only non-starter or another alternative? Only person with a "tricky" fixture would be Barnes v City. I had two free transfers but I decided that Vardy > Jimi was fine and GW28 I'll still have 11 players (providing Lund/Williams start) but if I want to reinforce I can do Auba > Vardy (tasty Norwich fixture)

Something like that. I think the most interesting part tonight will be the team selection. It's hard to imagine Pep going full strength tonight + Leicester on Saturday when they've got a more important game in Madrid next week.

For FPL purposes, I'd love to see Aguero and KDB benched today and then use Leicester as the Madrid prep 🙂

Personally, I would feel like you do (too weak) if that was my forward line. However, they do seem to be the form horses and whilst Jimi didnt score at the weekend, he did look dangerous to me and had chances. The one thing that is missing about the 3 of them though - and Vardy, Aguero, Auba have this - is the ability to bag more than one goal.

  10. Countdown to GW29 Conundrum

Just my tuppence on a potential DGW 29 after comments yesterday from the Twitterazzi that the DGW in 29 is more likely than unlikely:

In contrast to those who are looking at City's fixtures, seeing a gap, and instantly assuming they must play then, I personally think DGW29 is more unlikely than likely.

Man City v Arsenal or Chelsea will be a televised big ratings game, and I can't see any reason why BT would agree to it going ahead (likely) directly against the second leg of Liverpool v A Madrid when it is a clear breach of the current MOU, unless some sort of financial incentive or other favour has been given by Sky. My guess is that BT let Man City play West Ham in 26 against the Spurs game tonight (first leg and not such a big ratings winner) as a compromise, especially as that match needed re-arranging for exceptional circumstances.

Man City get knocked out of CL (likely) and the shortage of slots isn't an issue any more. If they don't, I'm sure they will have no problem agreeing to a TGW in 37 with the league gone. It would have been a massive problem fixture wise if the West Ham game wasn't played in 26 or 29, which is why I think BT are likely to have compromised to let them have the West Ham game tonight.

Saying that, I'm still saving FT this week just in case 😉

I agree. A double for City falling in a sea of blanks for them is a nightmare planning wise. Especially as in week 29 so many other teams have great fixtures, I want to be able to ignore City and Chelsea for the time being and focus on other teams with minimal risk of being stung.

Its normally 10 or 11 days notice required for a fixture rearrangement, so we should do, although the chance exists for the match to be arranged for the 12th March, announced on the 2nd March, which would be after GW28 has concluded.

              Hi Jarvish,
I think I've taken most things into account, but maybe I don't know as much about the MOU as you.
Do you not think CHE vs MCI or MCI vs ARS could be moved to a 7.15pm kick-off on March 11th, so it only clashes with the UCL for 30 minutes?

Before MCI vs WHU got moved to GW26, I thought a DGW in GW29 was possible but unlikely (~25%).
After MCI vs WHU got moved to GW26, I thought a DGW in GW29 became more likely (~75%)...
because moving MCI vs WHU to GW29 would have been more convenient for fans and wouldn't have disrupted the Winter Break.

Here's a repost of my initial thoughts (twitter link to my fixtures matrix screenshot), when pondering what to aim for with my current triple City.

Personally I don't see much point in an early reschedule for the WHU match in GW26, if they planned to leave GW29 alone.

Loading an extra fixture into the end of season schedule will be possible with a bit of creative engineering, but I can't see how MCI would accept that as desirable.

TV will no doubt have the largest say in this whatever the outcome so your suggestions are also absolutely viable.

      REPOST:

Why Manchester City are really QUITE LIKELY to have a Double Gameweek in GW29

      1) As it stands, Manchester City have a maximum of 3 further rearranged fixtures to be accommodated this season.
The only available dates at present are midweek of GW29, 34 and 37

      2) If Sheffield Wednesday beat MCI in the Cup, further blanks for MCI could still be caused by GW31 and GW34 opponents, Chelsea and Newcastle, depending on their progression through to Quarter Finals and Semi Finals respectively.
5th Round results may clarify, but will the Premier League wait to confirm and (unnecessarily) give fans just 1wk notice?

      3) The Storm Ciara hit match between MCI and West Ham has already been rescheduled during GW26, ensuring that GW29 midweek is available - Clear intent that the slot is expected to be needed.

      4) If Olympiakos defeat Arsenal in Europa League, MCI v ARS in DGW29 ‘could’ be confirmed by the GW28 deadline.

      5) If ARS progress to next stage of Europa, Premier League schedulers may take a view ahead of GW28 and the FA Cup R5 matches, that the planned GW31 tie between CHE v MCI will be rescheduled forward to midweek of GW29.
Alternatively, they may choose to wait and see how 5th Round FA Cup ties pan out for MCI, CHE and NEW.

      Likely scenario's

      (A) Arsenal lose v Olympiakos
      DGW29
      MCI v mun/ARS
      ARS v WHU/mci

      (B) Arsenal win v Olympiakos
      DGW29
      MCI v mun/che
      CHE v EVE/MCI

      (C) Man City lose v Sheff Wed
Each of the above scenario’s would still be in play.
If no decision on DGW29 taken prior to FA Cup 5th round, then DGW29 scheduling would be subject to CHE and NEW FA Cup progression.

No access to Twitter, but not really needed.

Yeah, I think if there was no MOU then everything you say would be correct, but there is and it makes things much more complicated.

But yeah, at the end of the day no-one really knows, so the best action at the moment is to keep all options as open as possible 🙂

I wonder how much the schedulers actually wing it without clubs intervening to point out scheduling difficulties ahead.

You just need to look at the Christmas schedule to know broadcasters don't give a care for player well being and insanely packed schedules. It's really down to the clubs to protect their own employees in that respect.

All the initial (presumably Premier League fed) tip offs being reported for the WHU match indicated there was no chance of a rescheduled match taking place before April, I took the liberty of tagging MCI WHU and PL in one of our discussions on scheduling difficulties (potential for 4 matches to go into 2 available slots). Within 24hrs news outlets are reporting a change in tune and match suddenly expected to be rescheduled to the following week.

Coincidence or Hashtag Influencer, we'll never know 😉

Sky's statement announcing that the rearranged City-West Ham would be televised included something along the lines of 'we can do this because the MOU preventing clashes with CL fixtures has lapsed'. Were they wrong?

            • 9 Years

The Sky statement said: "Under a previous agreement with UEFA, clubs across the continent were not allowed to rearrange fixtures on the same night as Europa League or Champions League games, however, this is now permitted, after the rule was scrapped by European football's governing body in 2017."

What they are saying is true, but there is a new MOU in force, and whilst the current MOU does allow clashes, it doesn't allow for these games to be televised. https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2020/02/11/learning-to-stick-to-my-guns-in-challenging-fpl-season/?hc_page=5&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_21671879

Been reading the discussion here, does it mean if there is no DGW 29, a triple GW somewhere at tail end of the season is INEVITABLE?

The latter would suck for those who have played their TC chip.

    Best approach to next few...

    A. 27: Kun+Martial to Mane+Jimi. 28: Lund to Taylor/cheap def.
    B. 27: Kun+Lund to Jimi+Robbo. 28 or 29: Martial to sub 10m mid.
    C: 27: Vardy+Lund to Jimi+VVD. Keep Kun. 28: Martial to Barnes.

I'm considering ditching KDB. Will see todays game but have a feeling they will focus on cups now. Wouldn't be suprised if KDB is rested for Real and won't feature at Leicester, he is not in his top form too.

United fixtures very ho hum until 32 when they’re great. Martial form ok only

Money has to be spent somewhere. So Salah+Mané it is for me, despite Robbo or VVD being « better value ».

          Hendo McCarthy
TAA Boly Stephens Lascelles (x, which is Fernandez rn but will change for 29 or 30)
          Salah Mané KDB Barnes Fleck
          Ings Vardy Jimenez

... whats wrong with that? Which « essential » is it missing? None, if you ask me.
Could even downgrade Vardy or Jim to DCL to upgrade elsewhere and it would still look good imo. So why being obsessed by « value » this season?

            • 11 Years

I prefer points over value as well 😀

Re-my team above, some (me included) are even considering selling KDB... if one does, even more money itb! That’s why not doubling on Salah or Mané bc it’s not value doesnt matter to me.

Two 12's in midfield from the same team is an absolute disaster if both blank.

That is what puts me off.

Going to hold double defence for now as it is more or less a route to guaranteed cleanies/attacking returns.

Son replacement is proving difficult because it feels like there's no stand out option, but also plenty of options to choose from.

Pepe punt is tempting and I'm not too bothered about the blank as I have a full playing bench, but Everton isn't the easiest fixture, certainly not going to be another 4-0 like Newcastle.

Could go Mane+Salah double up but involves removing Firmino. Not against that, but don't think it's worth a hit this week.

Fernandes is also up for consideration and his (mostly) set piece monopoly is good. But fixtures not great and United still look pretty awful going forward.

Richarlison - I know I should ignore the fixtures but it's difficult!

Alli / Moura / Bergwin - Not sure how easily they'll "step up" when they have neither Son nor Kane now. Both are such big losses, and it's not like they'd done great before the Villa game anyway.

Could bring Harvey Barnes forward a week but against Man City? Meh!

    Decisions, decisions...

I'm leaning towards Rich. Shame that it will be for a hit

      Pepe is interesting me also

Currently have Son & Mahrez so reckon will pick two from Martial, Richarlison, Pepe to replace them

Probably the first two with one of them making way for Pepe in GW29

Going to roll the FT & bench Son for Taylor this week though

Want to be able to swerve Martial or Richarlison if they happen to break their legs/be involved in car crashes/get abducted by aliens before GW28 - wouldn't rule any of that out the way the last few GW's have developed
