Frank Lampard rotates Chelsea squad as Aston Villa visit Stamford Bridge

In a Gameweek where Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.7m) saw their fixture unexpectedly postponed, Frank Lampard has heaped misery on misery for Fantasy Premier League managers.

The Chelsea manager has made six changes from the side that lost 3-0 to Arsenal, omitting three of his club’s four-most popular Fantasy assets.

27.0% of managers own Kurt Zouma (£5.9m), not in the matchday squad for Gameweek 16 with Antonio Rüdiger (£4.5m) next to Andreas Christensen (£4.7m) at centre-back.

The 12.8%-owned Reece James (£5.2m) is also out of the squad, replaced at right-back by Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m), although Ben Chilwell (£6.1m) holds onto the left-back berth.

Further up the pitch, Timo Werner (£9.3m), still sat in 14.0% of squads, drops out of the starting XI, joining Kai Havertz (£8.2m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) on the Chelsea bench.

That means a front-three of Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.7m), Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) and Christian Pulisic (£8.2m) going up against an Aston Villa defence forced to leave out Tyrone Mings (£5.4m) through suspension.

This is the first Premier League match that Dean Smith’s men will face without the centre-back this season, a first start together for Ezri Konsa (£4.7m) and Kortney Hause (£4.4m).

The rest of Aston Villa’s squad looks in good shape, especially compared to the second-string feel of Chelsea’s line-up.

The in-form Anwar El Ghazi (£5.7m) and Bertrand Traoré (£5.9m) flank Jack Grealish (£7.8m) in the number 10 role while Ollie Watkins (£6.1m) starts up-front fresh from a hat-trick of assists against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea XI: E Mendy; Chilwell, Christensen, Rüdiger, Azpilicueta; Mount, Kanté, Jorginho; Hudson-Odoi, Giroud, Pulisic.

Aston Villa XI: Martínez; Targett, Hause, Konsa, Cash; D Luiz, McGinn; El Ghazi, Grealish, B Traoré; Watkins.

            Different kind of transfer/player

Silva is an experienced world class centre back still on his game while being surrounded by youth and pace, which is a bit different from Azpi trying to keep up with pacy young lads on the wing while expecting to get up and down, but fair point regards to age, not sure Azpi has that CB role in him at the minute

The one thing FPL should really have looked at adjusting this season was to allow transfers to accrue beyond 2

      Why’s that?

Why let transfers burn when they are more vital than ever. Picking a stronger bench that you can rotate through and banking transfers is a way to deal with the postponements. This should have been an option

        1. Paqueta Rice
          • 3 Years
          3 years, 3 months ago

Don’t let your transfers burn, surely always somewhere to upgrade? I don’t think they should change the rules for one season based on ifs and buts. Giving everyone extra transfers just in case games are postponed won’t fix the e problem. Everyone is in the same boat, nobody is gaining advantage over anyone else.

      2. Postman Ty
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 3 months ago

Allows casuals a better route back into the game if they take a few weeks off. Possibly rewards people who set their teams up well and don't need to use the transfers, and/or promotes using the bench to accrue transfers. I can see a few reasons to increase it. Maybe not infinitely but to 3 or 4?

this would only be a further advantage to the people who get lucky at the start of the season. Those people already have the advantage of getting early on bandwagons (= point) AND not needing to sell their underperforming players for hits to avoid price dops.

      1. Postman Ty
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 3 months ago

Price system is the issue there then. I think they could make the drops less volatile. There's far too many casuals now who sell players in bulk from knee-jerk reactions that screw over proper managers.

How had COVID affected the FH chip though. That’s always been the rule. Maybe that is a rule they should change in general though, I do think if you had 2ft before a FH you should still get them back.

Imo burning managers transfers cheapens the game anyway for the sake of stimulating engagement. If you build a stronger sqaud that requires less repair then you should be rewarded with transfers accruing, not punished

The reason it's 2 is to allow money to move positions without a hit, e.g. premium-mid/cheap-striker to cheap-mid/premium striker

...but that's all that should be allowed.

A lot of times, a wildcard might only be 5-6 changes in a well setup team, you don't want to allow people to build up transfers to a level of being a virtual wildcard.

      2 is the right amount.

I don't think it's worth it with hits. Chances are you're going to have a crappy budget option on the bench, even with a double they may not make the -4 back, and at that point you're definitely wasting the BB anyways.

  13. @persecuted_by_mods
      3 years, 3 months ago

It's always a weird thing that people ALWAYS favour the defender, it's always diving cheating attackers but never cheating defenders pulling shirts or tripping people over or treading on attackers or obstructing them or pretending they didn't touch the ball last

Grealish draws fouls (think I've seen him do a proper dive like once)- it's up to the crappy defenders to not fall for it and go rushing in

That said he is talented but annoying for other non diving related issues

      1. GreennRed
        • 12 Years

Sure all the great defenders dabble in the dark arts, Stam, Carvahlo, Terry. Sledging, slapping, holding where ref can't see.

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
            3 years, 3 months ago

Yup, but nobody ever calls them cheaters whereas there's always pages and pages of nonsense about Grealish diving, why not blame the defenders trying to win the ball of him when they have no chance

Yip. Sure if the defender's timing is off he deserves to be skinned or drawn into contact and concede a free or penalty. But a good striker won't be silly enough to concede a penalty, they'd hack a defender down outside the box. Grealish though should play the ball quicker cos, ffor mme, hhe too often waits for the contact rather than play ball. A class act all the same.

Fouls a foul. Most defenders kick at his shins, not Grealish’s fault that the refs don’t call it unless he falls over

Strongly disagree with most of this.
Diving is called out because most players dive, especially now, and it's essentially cheating. Going down from the slightest touch is absolute crap, you can't just tell defenders it's a non-contact sport for them only. People do complain about defenders grabbing, but it could be punished more. How Maguire got away with the chokehold on Azpi this season is daylight robbery. Obstructing is part of the game, attackers do it to the goalkeeper and defenders all the time. Pretending you didn't touch the ball last also goes both ways.

Grealish doesn't draw fouls, he forces contact and falls over for no reason and it's given every time. Just because he got touched, in a contact sport, doesn't make it a foul. He's bought it.

              1. @persecuted_by_mods
                  3 years, 3 months ago

Completely disagree, I've seen grealish do one dive, the rest is outsmarting a stupid defender he can force contact if he wants to why should his movement be impeded by what a defender wants to do? Hazard was a master of it too

People complain about defenders doing those things, but do they get called cheats?

                  1. Postman Ty

You're only talking about literally diving over a leg and pretending they touched you. That doesn't happen anymore because they introduced retroactive bans and then VAR was implemented to reverse decisions. Neymar was the king of that crap.

Going down from a touch is cheating, it's not a foul. It's not outsmarting stupid people, it's being dishonest. It's so easy to deliberately run in front of someone and fall over and there's nothing they can do. Or as soon as you feel a touch just fall over despite having absolutely no reason to fall over.

                    1. @persecuted_by_mods
                        3 years, 3 months ago

If it was so easy everyone would be doing it, they don't. The reason defenders dive in on grealish and hazard is because they know they can't get the ball off them otherwise, just because something doesn't completely wipe you out doesn't mean it's not a foul that's the mistake you're making here, if contact impedes I have no issue with someone going down, can Grealish stay on his feet? Yes but again if he doesn't want to why should he feel obliged to when a defender can do what he likes according to you, other than blatantly wiping someone out

It's a contact sport mate! You can't just give yourself fouls as you're implying because he doesn't want to stay on his feet. People aren't diving in on him they literally touch his back and he falls over, what are you watching? Tons of people do it they just don't get the ball as much as Grealish does, and other players clearly have more integrity.

Liverpool dodged a bullet not signing Werner.

Liverpool would’ve been perfect for Wener. Both Mane and Sarah can play through the middle and interchange positions with Werner

Yep, just because Lampard can't use him properly doesn't mean Klopp can't, especially with Liverpool's insane transfer record.

Johnstone, if budget is an issue. Fabianski is clearly the best keeper to own for the DGW though.

Grealish brace. 18 saves for Mendy, who goes up for a last minute corner and heads in the equaliser.
