FPL Gameweek 4 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) bagged a double-digit haul on his second Manchester United debut as the Portuguese veteran’s 2.2 million owners were rewarded for their investment on Saturday.

No player has racked up more FPL points than the United number seven in Gameweek 7 so far, although Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) went stride for stride with his fellow premium forward and matched that 13-point tally.

The Red Devils’ 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle United was one of eight Premier League matches that took place on a busy Saturday, the main talking points of which we’ll discuss in this our first Gameweek 4 round-up.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

KEY FPL TALKING POINTS

  • Deprived of the services of Son Heung-min (£10.1m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) and lining up in a diamond formation, Tottenham Hotspur managed only two shots in the whole of their clash with Crystal Palace (none in the first half) and have the worst expected goals tally (0.09) in Gameweek 4 so far. The Eagles, by contrast, topped Saturday’s xG table with 3.00.
  • Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) scored twice on his debut and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) seemingly consolidated his position as Palace’s first-choice penalty taker, stepping up to take the Eagles’ spot-kick with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) on the field. Of just as much interest from an FPL perspective was the performance of budget midfielder Conor Gallagher (£5.5m,), who delivered two attacking returns for the second Gameweek in a row. On free-kicks and corners, he was involved in nine of the 18 shots that Palace had.
  • Mason Greenwood (£7.7m), Paul Pogba (£7.7m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.5m) are all set to be tied on 31 points in FPL if the bonus points are delivered as expected. No midfielder has more this season.
  • Shane Duffy (£4.2m) is now the joint-best ‘value’ player in the game, returning 5.2 points per million spent. He was part of a Brighton defence that kept their second shut-out in four matches in a 1-0 win over Brentford.
  • Last season’s best two backlines, Manchester City and Chelsea, are now joint-top along with Spurs for clean sheets this season (three each) despite the pair being in the bottom half of our Season Ticker over the opening four Gameweeks. Chelsea struggled from set plays against a lively Aston Villa, however, and they’ve now allowed 17 chances from dead-ball situations to be conceded over the last two Gameweeks.
  • Pep Guardiola named an unchanged starting XI for the third successive match, the first time he has ever done that at City. It’s safe to assume that more changes will be in the offing once the Champions League starts in midweek and indeed Thomas Tuchel’s tinkering has already begun in earnest, with the benched Mason Mount (£7.5m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) two of six changes that the Chelsea manager made.
  • Dean Smith paired Danny Ings (£8.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) in the same side for the first time, turning to a 3-5-2 to accommodate both strikers. Watkins was heavily involved and registered three times as many touches of the ball than his strike partner, who was hooked midway through the second half. Watkins also had six shots to Ings’ one.
  • Marcal‘s (£4.5m) two attacking returns in Wolves’ 2-0 win over Watford were his first ever in FPL. The left-back banked two assists despite not creating a single chance in Opta’s eyes: a Marcal cross was first turned into his own net by Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m), before the Portuguese defender’s blocked shot was converted by debutant substitute Hee-Chang Hwang (£5.5m). Marcal and fellow wing-back Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) had three of the six big chances that Wolves created.
  • Arsenal have had 52 attempts on goal in their two meetings with non-big six sides this season. Thirty of those came in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Norwich City.

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 4 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 7

Michail Antonio (£8.0m) and Japhet Tanganga (£4.5m) will both miss Gameweek 5 through suspension after being sent off for two bookable offences on Saturday.

On suspension tightrope watch, meanwhile, Paul Pogba (£7.7m) has reached three yellow cards after just four Gameweeks. Another two bookings before United have played a total of 19 league matches and he’ll be suspended for one game.

Brighton’s win came at a cost, with Adam Webster (£4.5m) limping off with a hamstring problem – something that may aid Shane Duffy‘s (£4.2m) chances of staying in this Albion side, however.

The Seagulls were also without Pascal Gross (£6.0m) and Enock Mwepu (£5.9m), who were both self-isolating.

“I need to see but he said [Webster] felt something there but we will see how bad that is. Enock was pinged from a flight and Pascal is just self-isolating.” – Graham Potter

Edinson Cavani (£8.4m) missed Manchester United’s win over Newcastle with a knock that isn’t expected to keep him out for long, while Rob Holding (£4.3m) was absent from Arsenal’s win over Norwich with a bruised knee.

Son Heung-min (£10.1m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) were absent from Spurs’ defeat at Crystal Palace, while Eric Dier (£4.6m) was forced off after just 11 minutes of the loss at Selhurst Park.

Nuno Espirito Santo was, as ever, a bit thin on details after the game:

“I don’t know. [Son] doesn’t look well. Stevie, let’s wait and see this week. Hopefully, they will improve and be available for the next game, let’s see.

“Let’s wait and see [on Dier].” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Among the more notable returnees on Saturday were Jonny Evans (£5.4m) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.9m), who shared 90 minutes of game-time between them.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) and Phil Foden (£7.9m) were unused substitutes for Manchester City.

Callum Wilson (£7.4m), missing with a thigh injury, will be “touch and go” to feature in Gameweek 5, meanwhile.

FPL OWNERSHIP AND CAPTAINCY – TOP 10K

Ronaldo’s ownership shot up from nought to 65% in the top 10k over the last fortnight and he was the most-captained player among these leading managers, with just over half handing him the armband.

Ronaldo and Lukaku were the only players in the above ‘most popular’ list to bank double-digit hauls so far but the Belgian is a veritable differential by comparison.

While almost 99% of the leading FPL managers had to stomach Antonio’s red card, over 7% endured the double ignominy of captaining him.

There was a big spike in Wildcard usage in Gameweek 4, with over 17% of the top 10k deploying the chip.

The Brighton goalkeeper double-up, bargain-bin defenders and ‘out of position’ mid-price midfielders are features of the template squad, with over 85% also opting for Ronaldo.

With CL looming around the corner, how nailed do we think Torres is(as nailed as anyone can be inside the Pep roulette)?

    {Bottomed...} Hey all,

Interested to see your WC teams that include Salah, CR7 and Lukaku? Any with those 3 + TAA that look half decent?

        Sanchez (4.0)
        TAA, Semedo, Ayling, White, (Livramento)
        Salah, Greenwood, Jota, Benrahma (Sissoko)
        Ronaldo, Lukaku (4.5)

Got to play two of White, Ayling, Sissoko or Livramento. Which seems doable.

Looks about as good as can be. Greenwood / Jota or even Benrahma potential rotation puts you in a bit of a stressful situation. I'm inclined to go a similar team with someone like Grealish/Zaha/Mount who would seem a bit more nailed on

Mount was rotated today! (I’d have thought the same thing though).
Greenwood to Raphinha might be the best to free up some cash. Benrahma to Sarr maybe.

But we get transfers so can make them along the way.

      Ronaldo, Lukaku, Antonio

I'm in a similar difficult situation (your current squad a lot more solid than mine though)... Just think Antonio is the best for that spot after his 1 GW suspension and Villa fixtures + Watkins presence makes Ings the more droppable long term. Do you have a plan on when you'd use your WC if you were to hold?

            Agree with the Antonio point.
Tempted to hold getting Lukaku till gw 7 but know he could do well against Spurs.
Current plan is to WC gw 8 and move the Liverpool, Utd and West Ham assets to Chelsea and Man City.
What does your team look like if you don't mind?

    2FTs and 0.2 ITB

Suggestion is to not move Bruno.

Barnes is your weak spot - just move to Raphinha and roll a transfer. Play 4-5-1 for the week.

I'm in the same fix, your current bunch is better than mine.
I'd agree with above coming to not move Bruno out as first priority. Thinking of keeping Antonio as well for future GWs.
      I'd not WC.
Instead I'd do Barnes to 4.5 and upgrade Perica to Bamford/Jimenez.

Man…you way too late to move out Barnes. If you already hold him up to this gw, might as well give him another 1-2 gw. Lei fixtures getting better and his stat actually good compared to other teammates (assess using member tools).
But looking at your team, you def need couples of moves. CR/Luk in, either Bruno/Greenwood out, sort out Perica/Tsimi. Not a fan of Benny. Keep/sell Antonio is depend on other final selection (he will miss one game only and that is tough game, vs MU)

Spurs defence is not good - they have been so lucky - they’re conceding huge volumes of XGc - near the bottom of the table

That may be but they still kept 3 clean sheets and set up very defensively. They will fight v Chelsea.
You need luck to keep a clean sheet.
            Chelsea incredibly lucky yesterday.
Vardy had a goal just ruled out v City, Barnes his the bar when anyone else would have scored
United's clean sheet v Wolves was ridiculous
            Etc etc

I think Kaku’s prospects improve against a defence that concede a lot of XGc - and that’s what Spurs defence have been doing (They’re not far off double Villa’s XGc)

Spurs won’t keep getting cleansheets unless they really improve defensively

From what I saw from CR7 (and his talent + history in general), he seems like a set and forget for the entire season. Lukaku fixtures from GW7 and Chelsea's potential make him almost fixture-proof and also hard to go without

Ronaldo’s next few look good - West Ham away with no Antonio on Sunday when they play thurs night (utd play Tuesday) then two home games in a row vs Villa & Everton

And Kaku could destroy that Spurs team who were shocking vs palace in the run up to his GW7 green fixture run

Could, Spurs with 11 men haven’t conceded! Still in my mind a tough game.

Spurs haven’t conceded with 11 men due to poor finishing though, not due to good defending (look at their expected Goals conceded)

And Kaku has historically proven himself to be anything but a bad finisher (he historically scores at about 5% better than XG) - so next weekend is looking a good fixture for him

Ronaldo’s next 3 fixtures look pretty juicy too - and even the Leicester game after that is totally scoreable for Ronnie

Definitely need to wait for more concrete news but in terms of Arsenal's growth, it makes zero sense to play someone who won't be at the club.
Similar situation at Southampton, GKs rotated last season, however, Forster is said to be leaving on a free at season's end. The majority saw Forster as the better option to start, however, McCarthy has been given the nod.

    Sanchez / Bachmann
    TAA / Shaw / Dier / Tsimikas / Amartey
    Salah / Bruno / Grealish / Sarr / Benrahma
    DCL / Antonio / Obafemi

    Cheers 🙂

      No.
      Definitely not if you've 2FT.
Even if 1FT, I'd first rule out if -4 cannot sort pressing issues, bringing in Ronaldo is not one but good to have, before WC.

Would you WC this team? No Jota/Salah/CR7/Lukaku and a few other fringe issues to fix.

    A) Yes, WC
    B) Bruno & Kane -> Salah & Lukaku (-4)
    C) Bruno & Barnes -> Salah & 6.2 (Traore) (-4) (Kane -> CR7 in GW6)
    D) Something else

    Sanchez
    Trent, Shaw, White
    Bruno, Greenwood, Benrahma, Barnes
    Kane, DCL, Antonio

    Steele, Veltman, Tsimikas, Brownhill
    Bank 0.1m, 1FT

Was thinking this. But B or C gets me most of the main players I’d get on a WC, so perhaps a -4 is better?

        Could also do:
        E) Barnes, Bruno & Kane -> Salah, Lukaku & one of Torres/Pepe (-8) to give me

        Sanchez
        Trent, Shaw, White
        Salah, Greenwood, Torres, Benrahma
        Lukaku, DCL, Antonio

Which I think looks pretty decent

I agree with your assessment here. I think a wc is rash. Another gw of data will be helpful, you already own many highly owned players so I think you can make it a few gw. Ignore the trigger happy knee jerks!

Yeah this isn't bad to be fair but with Antonio out of the next game you'll be relying on veltman and Torres could be rotated. Also think Ronaldo is superior to lukaku for the next 2 although lukaku did look really good so who knows

            C) means I’d captain Salah for GW5 (CPL) and then captain CR7 for GW6 (AVL). I think whu could be a tricky game for MUN so I’d be ok going without CR7 this week

You don’t have any of the best 3 players in the game.
          Your bench is poor.
          Barnes.
Benrahma time is up,time to cash in.
Antonio sent off so also arguably a good time to cash in

            2) whose isn’t!
            3) He’d be going
            4) Disagree - cheap and good fixtures

I would hold the wc to gw7 and patch the team up to that point. Fixtures change so much at that stage that you will want wholesale changes. I think gw5 or gw6 wc is a waste unless the team is in real trouble (which it isn't)

Hmm it is tricky. Kane was toothless yesterday and has a poor fixture. Lukaku has two poor fixtures. If you need Liverpool assets is there an option to go salah and jota?

Hmm perhaps salah plus CR7 and hold on lukaku for a moment. I think jota should also be considered as has great value. Then wc gw7 and go big on Chelsea?

Not really possible to get both Salah/Jota as I already have Trent/Tsimikas.

I’m thinking C) could be the move - take a 2 week punt on a c.6m mid (hope Kane delivers this week), swap Kane for CR7 in 6 and then WC in the CHE boys in 7

I fundamentally don't think -4 on a 6m mid for 2 weeks is worth it. I would use the -4 to get on a big name who is going to go up in price such as Ronaldo. I think option C is a bit fence sitting. If you don't wc, you want to maximise the points in these two gw - pinning those hopes on kane (crap fixture) and a 6m mid doesn't feel like the way to do that.

Tbh kane and Bruno could easily do the business so I wouldn't get too hung up on it, maybe consider transfer value for these 2 gw and maximise that with the wc7 in mind and then close out the mental anguish!

Depends, I think the reasoning the manager gave was international duty but Norwich's midfield has arguably been their weakest area this season.
Playing a 3 in midfield, which helps his chances of selection, however, they have religiously played a 4-2-3-1 under Farke's reign. They have also just signed a defensive-minded midfielder in Normann who I would expect to start going forward.

Still got decent fixtures to come and every chance we could have been looking at him getting 2 points against United next week anyway. Not as if he's a rotation risk up top either especially with the way he's started the season. Does give people who have a weak bench/non-starters a bit of a dilemma mind you.

I was gonna bench him next GW anyway. His fixtures are decent enough until GW11.

      1) Tsim to Wolves def, bench Antonio and play 442

      Sanchez

      Is Greenwood + Toney > Raphinha + DCL worth a -4?

Sucks to lose Greenwood in his form but surely Raphinha and his run of fixtures has potential to return in this run and would keep for the long run. Toney needs to go so DCL a decent upgrade there.

Bruno Antonio out for Ronaldo Trincao?

Trincao has great fixtures for the next 7-8 weeks, and Ronaldo can become Lukaku in 2 weeks, with the left over cash enabling triple Chelsea then too
