The latest on Alexander-Arnold’s illness as Klopp talks up future rotation

Our analysis of the weekend’s Premier League matches from a Fantasy perspective continues as we spotlight the key talking points from Liverpool’s win over Crystal Palace.

For a summary of all six of Saturday’s games, click here.

LIVERPOOL 3-0 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Sadio Mane (£11.9m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Naby Keita (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Salah, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m)
  • Bonus: van Dijk x3, Salah x2, Alisson (£6.0m)

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD “ILL”

The best FPL defenders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 5

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) missed Liverpool’s meeting with Crystal Palace through illness but Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the right-back’s ailment wasn’t Covid-related, adding:

“This morning, after breakfast, Trent didn’t feel right. We actually planned to start him but Millie did an incredible job.”

Thiago Alcantara (£5.4m) also picked up a calf problem in the 3-0 victory over the Eagles which Klopp hopes isn’t serious.

KLOPP TO ROTATE MORE?

 1

The start of the UEFA Champions League group stage usually results in a surge in rotation at Manchester City but we haven’t seen as much of it from Jurgen Klopp in recent years.

This season could be different, however.

The Liverpool boss had previously discussed how he didn’t want to rotate Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) out of the side in 2020/21 because of the disruption caused by injuries elsewhere. With just five Gameweeks gone of the current campaign, he has already done something he didn’t do in the Premier League last season – bench his first-choice left-back.

Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m) was again the beneficiary against Crystal Palace, claiming five FPL points as the Reds registered their fourth clean sheet of the season.

Asked whether the intention was to chop and change a bit more in 2021/22, Klopp said after full-time:

“Yeah. I think we did in the past but maybe if you ask me like this then maybe not often enough, I don’t know. You want to line up the best possible team and there are different factors; one is who played together. Today it was ‘rhythm or freshness?’ and we decided for freshness. Otherwise, we could have played one or another again, but we didn’t want that.

“Joel {Matip] is not injured or anything, we just left him completely out of the squad so we don’t get into danger of bringing him on or whatever. Trent, we planned to bring him [in] but that was sorted as well, so that’s it.

“We will rotate, we always rotated, but you see in the last line in the last years we couldn’t rotate really because there were always a maximum of two fit [centre-backs] very often – and the third one was already a midfielder. In midfield, hopefully, we have the numbers to do [it] and we need that because, as I said before the game, this is the engine room of the team and we need to make the changes there. Up front, we have different opportunities as well, so that’s good. How often we do it, I didn’t make a plan already for the season, but as often as necessary and possible.” – Jurgen Klopp

SET-PIECE PROWESS AND JOTA FRUSTRATION

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mane (£11.9m) are, until Sunday’s games at least, now first and second for FPL points among midfielders this season.

Salah has reached 50 FPL points quicker than in any of his five previous campaigns.

Both players followed up rebounds from corner-kick situations to find the net against the Eagles, while Naby Keita (£5.0m) lashed in a third to complete a dead-ball treble.

Over a third of Liverpool’s goal attempts this season have come from set plays, with their tally of 43 shots from dead-ball situations vastly superior to that of any other side. Another reason, of course, why Alexander-Arnold is such a precious FPL commodity.

Diogo Jota (£7.7m) suffered another frustrating afternoon in front of goal, however, blazing over from four yards with his best effort.

Even the absence of Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) didn’t stop him from being hooked for the fourth time this season and the Brazilian is back to full training this week to further weaken Jota’s grip on a starting spot.

ANOTHER ENCOURAGING DISPLAY FROM PALACE

The latest on Alexander-Arnold's illness as Klopp talks up future rotation

Crystal Palace opened their 2021/22 campaign with a chastening defeat to Chelsea but while the scoreline was identical at Anfield, the performance was more heartening.

Liverpool were generally frustrated from open play and the Eagles carved out some good openings at the other end, with Alisson (£6.0m) clawing a Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) effort onto the woodwork and Christian Benteke (£6.3m) also hitting the post – an offside flag went up in that instance but a VAR call would have overturned it.

Alisson merited his bonus point with some sweeper-keeping, advancing to snuff out a couple of promising Palace attacks behind the much-changed backline and preventing substitute Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) from following up a big chance late on.

“I think losing 3-0 is quite difficult and severe [given] the number of chances we created or the situations we created. We were really poor defending set pieces and you can’t concede three goals on set pieces at Anfield if you want to take something from the game.

“At the moment it’s more frustration. We knew how difficult this game was and I believe we played at times some really good football. The frustration was to concede those three goals on the set pieces because you expect, especially playing here, [you are more likely] to concede from open play.” – Patrick Vieira

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Tsimikas, Fabinho, Van Dijk, Konaté, Thiago (Keïta 62), Henderson (Origi 88), Milner, Mané, Salah, Jota (Jones 76).

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Guéhi, Andersen, Mitchell, Kouyaté (Olise 82), McArthur (Riedewald 65), Gallagher, Ayew, Zaha, Benteke (Edouard 65).

Just in case you are thinking I am saying it was brain-dead to get 2 wolves Def, I mean he did 2 fouls in a row as in marcal with the grabbing

I also doubled up, the stats were good even though they had hard fixtures and they won the last match Vs an "easier" team. Sadly yesterday was an implosion and they looked god awful

          RIP Jimmy.

I think you maybe overlooking something. This is from the great man himself.

My affection for the club has never been a secret,’ Greaves said in 1995, while reminiscing about his time on the Fulham Road. ‘It’s probably the greatest name in the world: Chelsea. You think about it. What does it conjure up? It conjures up the best part of the biggest city in the world. Chelsea! It’s magical. And they’ve never lived up to it, but I hope they do. I’m a great Chelsea fan, as you probably know. And I’d love to see it all happen.’

Both clubs will want to honour Jimmy with a win.

Dias and Cancelo shouldn't have got clean sheet points yesterday.

I'm not sure why VAR reversed a decision that wasn't clear or obvious.

Armstrong went to ground easily without a tackle from Walker. At first I thought it was a pen too. Right call from the ref

not at all, Trent was out yesterday and has averaged 8.5 points per game. so if he had played and kept his same point scoring tally he would be 10.5 points ahead of them

Angry as **** because I switched Ramsdale & White to Steele & Tierney on last day of wildcarding. I wanted two playing goalkeepers all the time and late overthinking got to me of course.

Such a stupid move because this guy isn't even Sanchez's back up anymore and KT is the most injury prone player in our defence. It made little to no sense.

Might take a hit and forget about it. I think we will keep more clean sheets than people expect us to this season and I honestly believe Aaron is #1 and it's his place to lose.

Tierney playing left wing at times though. I did something similar, took out Sarr and White and brought in Gallagher and Semedo... Just livid... I'd stick with Tierney though, a haul is coming.

Team is in relatively good nick. 1 FT. ~30k.

            Sanchez
            TAA ∙ Semedo ∙ Shaw
            Salah ∙ Jota ∙ Raphinha ∙ Traore
            Ronaldo ∙ Bamford ∙ Antonio

            Steele ∙ Livramento ∙ White ∙ Bissouma

The plan thus far has been to use 2 FT in GW7 for Ronaldo/Shaw > Lukaku/James. I am a little uneasy on that meaning no United attack, because their attack is always decent - but that's tricky.

Feel the only 'wrong' moves I've made this far are Barnes over Greenwood in GW1 & Traore over Sarr in my GW4 WC. Would probably be Top 1k with those (and unlucky with Semedo/Jota etc too!)

Do feel there is an opportunity with Grey/Sarr in the next couple given NOR & NEW/LEE. Wouldn't be asking this if I had Sarr of course, but would you deviate or hold firm for now?

Honestly SOU pulling two CSs out of the bag wasn't expected - but as decent as Traore actually did look yesterday, it's minor concern.

I haven't planned out GW8 onwards much but will start to look at that now.

We have hd a very similar story so far.

Not getting Greenwood who I really considered GW1 and Traore over Sarr in GW 4 my two mistakes so far. Unlucky with Semedo/Traore/Jota who really should have returned last two weeks.

In fact I would say we had the same teams this week, until i ignored the obvious move of benching Antonio and doing DCL to Bamford.

Instead I got rid of both and brought in Luakaku for a -4 as I dont think Im going to be able to bring myself to part with Cr7 come GW7

Thank you - I think that's a superb bit of advice actually. I'm really going to consider this.

Like you I'm a bit concerned that Everton still look ropey at the back, whilst Southampton actually look more solid than expected for Lukaku. Beyond Everton - a bit less concerned.

Salah has Watford in GW8 to captain and he looooooves Watford. City vs. Burnley will be another 5-0 but as you say, at least I'll have a defender.

Wait to hear on Raphinha - he'd be my longer term pick although worth noting that upcoming teams have actually done okay on the defensive front aside from Watford.

I think you'll want rid of Grey soon & the same for Sarr, but if be really tempted to go quite aggressive with Sarr. Grey (NOR) & SAR (NEW/LEE) are good fixtures.

It's just they you need to take your transfer plan going forward into account.

Up to Friday when anyone asked about playing Williams/Omo or Sissoko the answer so often was Williams/Omo because "Watford are rubbish", now that they've beaten Norwich suddenly every answer to "replacement for Jota or Benrahma?" is Sarr as if the consensus wasn't that Norwich would comfortably beat Watford and he's somehow risen already. People need to chill.

Sarr is a very tidy player but people are also very fickle. Last week it’s Sarr didn’t have a single shot all game, Watford don’t look good, to now being a popular option. He’s a talisman on penalties but Norwich made them look good.

I'm no too sure I agree with this, I watched Watford against Spurs and for long periods of the game they looked a very decent side.

Battered Norwich yesterday and played well in there 1st game also. That's 3 decent showings in 5 games, not too shabby at all

People are so knee jerky and chasing points. Now they will bring sarr for jota, grey and guess what jota will score and sarr Will blank. 2 weeks ago everybody wanted jota, now jota is a complete waste

Norwich make players look far better than they are, so far anyway. I'm kinda annoyed because Grey is bound to haul in that fixture, but can see Sarr blanking against both NEW/LEE somehow.

this is the definition of using only stats vs. the eye-test/watching the matches. much more to it than just that.

people only want the answers and points, without knowing how people have come to that decision. otherwise, I reckon more people would have had Sarr this week compared to the likes of Traore.

If Foster starts GW6 then most likely will be in for a while unless he does worse than Bachmann.

I saw wolves at the king power, said all they along they we’re terrible. While everyone here was talking them up.

They've looked good in all their other games before yesterday. I definitely wouldn't describe them as terrible, even if they were disappointing against Brentford

Their attack looks good to be fair but they're let down by not having a clinical finisher.

Very odd team at the moment. All fart no poo.

Barring a Kane explosion today, I am selling next week to Antonio so I can get Salah.

Salah will be coming in for Greenwood or Jota - can’t decide which, sell:

            A) Jota
            B) Greenwood

This will leave 0.1/0.2 short, so another hit required which I think I’ll be selling Alonso, best replacement?

            1) James
            2) Digne
            3) Pereira
            4) Other

It will leave my team like this (-8):

            Sanchez
            Trent | Shaw | 1-4
            Salah | Bruno | Raphinha | Sarr | Jota/Greenwood
            Antonio | Bamford

            Steele | Livramento | Williams | Scarlett

            Thanks!
