FPL news: Tuchel sacked by Chelsea

The second Premier League managerial casualty of 2022/23 was confirmed this morning as Chelsea announced that they had parted company with Thomas Tuchel.

The dismissal comes in the wake of the Blues’ disappointing UEFA Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb last night.

Chelsea had also lost to Southampton and Leeds United on the domestic front this season, while they were fortunate to claim victory over West Ham United in Gameweek 6.

A statement from the Chelsea board read:

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.

“There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.”

It was 100 matches and out for Tuchel, who marked a century of games in charge of Chelsea in Croatia on Tuesday.

He had won 60 of those fixtures, with a Champions League success in 2020/21 the high point of his tenure. Three domestic cup finals were reached, while the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup were also won in 2021.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHELSEA IN FPL?

The Blues are in action in the lunchtime kick-off in Gameweek 7, making the short trip to Craven Cottage to meet fellow west London club Fulham.

Tuchel’s former charges then entertain Liverpool in Gameweek 8.

Gameweeks 9-12 are probably the best time to pounce on any Chelsea assets should there be an uplift in their displays and results upon the new managerial appointment, as some stiffer tests follow before the World Cup.

BOOKIES’ FAVOURITES FOR NEXT CHELSEA MANAGER

Source: PaddyPower

Graham Potter is the early bookies’ favourite to take over, although the usually reliable David Ornstein said that “nobody is waiting in the wings as a replacement and the interim coaching staff will take charge for the next couple of days”.

Chelsea are, however, hoping to appoint a new coach quickly, potentially even before Gameweek 7.

THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN FPL

STARTING FORMATION

Tuchel opted for a wing-back system for most of his tenure, so the preferred formation of the incoming manager will be worth assessing.

We’ve been so used to seeing Reece James (£6.0m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) handed license to get forward as wing-backs in Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 but would, for instance, the move to a back four curb their attacking instincts?

NO MORE TUCHEL TINKERING?

One of the most infuriating features of Tuchel’s regime was his predilection for rotation – not that he is alone there in the English top flight.

In all honesty, it’s difficult to see whoever takes charge not chopping and changing to some extent, with Chelsea in action twice a week, every week, from now until the World Cup.

BARGAINS UNLEASHED?

It’s not just preferred formation we’re interested in but also favoured personnel.

Tuchel’s successor may have their own ideas as to which players should be handed more meaningful game-time.

In the form of Christian Pulisic (£5.7m), Hakim Ziyech (£5.7m) and Armando Broja (£5.3m), the Blues have some budget FPL assets who were peripheral under Tuchel who could now be handed a fresh lease of life under a new regime.

Could Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.4m) also get more of a look-in, given Edouard Mendy‘s (£4.9m) recent struggles?

We blame Werner, Havertz and Mendy for their performances.
How are players supposed to play well if they need to adapt to new tactics and managers every other season?

This is so stupid. They should have given Tuchel more time.

Thing is, it's the Chelsea way and for some reason it always seems to work.

      First seasons:

      Hiddink- FA Cup
Ancelotti - PL + FA Cup
Di Matteo - CL + FA Cup
      Benitez - EL
      Conte - PL
      Sarri - EL

two of chelseas biggest transfer failings are pulisic and ziyich, players not even signed by tuchel and two who did nothing last night when they came on. its so harsh to not to be given the chance to build a team his image. chelsea sacking people like this is bad in the longrun because every manager just inherits an incomplete team of the previous guy, as tuchel did with lampard and lampard Sarri.

Chelsea have built their success on running the club this way though. Tuchel has gone but several much more successful managers in similar/shorter spells were also sacked.

that success was before pep and klopp really came to the fore, its not a model that will work now.its no coincidence that two best teams over last 4 years or so have mangers who were given time. chelsea would most likely have sacked both of them by now

aside from jose chelsea have had no real identity to go with that success and thats down to teams being a bit of ancelloti conte, jose, sarri, lampard, and now tuchel. their is no real time given to creating a team with one singular image in terms of style of play, systems etc.

And a knock-on effect is that managers aren’t going to want to go there for that reason. Potter is a smart man he has no interest in going to that circus. Probably Poch or Zidane or somebody else happy to get 4 years of pay for 1 year of work.

No, talented managers at small clubs don't turn down these opportunities. If Potter isn't the next Chelsea manager, it will be because they went for a glamour appointment.

Potter has had opportunities to go to bigger teams before and hasn't taken them, there's always noise around him whenever anyone leaves a team and I have no doubt that in the majority of cases it's legitimate. Not saying he never will but he doesn't seem the type to want to go to a club in a position like Chelsea, he's taken a long time to build what he has at Brighton and I don't think he'd pass that up for a club that's been in the state of flux that Chelsea has been in. They're already quick to dump managers but in particular the last 6 months has been very messy for Chelsea for lots of reasons. I'd sooner see him going to Spurs or Arsenal than Chelsea.

Potter is a coach to improve players, improve the team. Not to go into a club with some players that have wallets bigger than their over-inflated egos.

Compared to Lukaku, Pulisic and Ziyech aren't failures at all. At least they were used in the team at some point. Unlike Lukaku, who they paid 113m for, only for Tuchel to later decide he wants to play without any strikers and that he is surplus to requirements.

What an insane overreaction by Boethly and Co. Every single club on this planet has a crisis and struggles at some point. Giving your manager more time with his new players to install an idea, to get to know them and to make things work would be welcomed at least. You just can't expect miracles and chemistry straightaway. I think this is a horrible decision and whoever comes in will have a tough, really tough time. The season doesn't end after 6 games and Tuchel didn't even get a chance to prove how good could post-transfer window Chelsea become. They gave up on him way too soon.

They weren't good last season either. Tuchel hasn't been getting the most out of any of his players for a while now, except maybe for the wingbacks but even that became less and less so towards and the end of last season and early this season.

He also insisted on a formation that's way too defensive. He wasn't intent on building a system that could challenge Man City or even Liverpool.

Chelsea were clearly in trouble in pre-season and things didn't improve

The problem was Tuchel, he is not able to motivate the players to perform at a high level very often for some reason

I think the players lost respect for him or his methods

Not sure he's still nailed. Botman might be safer.

With all that's been said, there's still this fact: if Tuchel had clearly lost the dressing room, the project was over anyway

Lewa, a Club Brugges striker, then three subs to come in (two Ajax mids and Reinaldo)

Have James and Mendy. Was going to sell Mendy, but since the sacking am contemplating that. Often see quick turnarounds in form after a sacking.

Mendy did have a knew complaint that kept him out last night so keep an eye on that
