Good team, I'm still wary of Nkunku been burnt by too many exciting new Chelsea signing in the past.

I'm so tempted to start with him. I know many are going to start with Jesus and then move to Nkunku but that is so boring. I'm just trying to play my own game. I'm surprised Pereira isn't in any drafts since at least for me he is a better pick than Enciso.

Very nice team. Currently swapping between Nkunku, Darwin and Gakpo. It’s a tricky one, does Nkunku take a while to settle and does the Chelsea team start well from the off?

And Gakpo/Darwin is uncertain regarding who starts but (h) to Bournemouth in GW2 is appealing.

My intension is to start with Jesus as a short-term measure. I want to see Nkunku in action and how the Liverpool attack settles. I can see myself getting Martinelli in place of Jesus as soon as I home in on the right 2nd striker, probably between GWs 3-5.

Yeah I think that’s a good idea, Jesus is important to Arsenal and how Arteta wants him to play but he is not as clinical as we would like and with Odegaard, Martinelli, Trossard and Havertz we have great options in midfield for Arsenal.

Well that's the thing. I'd rather start with Martinelli than Jesus. They're the same price, but the problem is there are plenty of attractive midfield options, but no one I can be sufficiently confident in as 2nd striker other than Jesus. A couple of gameweeks will give me data and eye-candy to make my judgements.

Not sure Trippier will score as well this season. We got so many clean sheets in the first part of the season and then dropped off in the second half of the season. His assists also dried up a bit as well. He'll still be on set-pieces but now won't take them all after the Tonali signing.

let's put the players aside for a moment and think about overall strategy.

The more I think about it, the more the start of the season looks like a lucky wheel. From the teams with good fixtures, the pool of players capable of returns is insanely wide. Let's take Arsenal as an example (but this also workds for Brighton, City (like always though), Liverpool etc..), points could equally come from Martinelli, Saka, Trossard, Jesus, Odegaard, Havertz.

Looking at my past years of playing (I have been playing for 10+ years), I have always wildcarded before GW10. Always.

This year, acknowledging I will once again WC before GW10, I think I will build a team for only 5GW, let the transfer window close and then WC based on my observations of how teams will line up during the first 5GW.

From GW1 to GW5, the strategy will be to have a very poor bench, and considering points could come from any player, pick the ones who are nailed, with pens and higher ceilings and hope for the best. This could possibly meen threemium with a very poor bench.

    1. LangerznMash
      • 8 Years

If you think the points may come equally from a variety of players, then it would make sense for you to pick the cheapest options from each club. Don't think I've seen a single Trossard owner on here.

    2. Andy_Social

My strategy differs. Until yesterday, my draft had a Front 7 entirely from the Top 3 teams. I've diluted it with Mitoma and Mbeumo since then. But my general strategy remains - I have a pool of 'big hitters', probably 7 players whom I intend to keep until up to GW19, the last point to play my WC. The other players, esp cheaper defenders can be easily managed by transfers.

Now in the past, I too have always used my WC by GW10, most often by GW5. But I sense that this time is different. Due to the pricing, we can afford more season-keepers than before.

Now all my plans go down the drain if Salah or Trent explode like many people expect them too, but other than that, if I'm broadly right, there's no clear point at which I need to use my WC at all.

By keeping things steady with no plan when to use a WC, I have 5 defenders to rotate amongst 3 starting places, and just a dead striker at the end of the bench (and 2nd keeper).

you know you won't keep your Wildcard until GW19.
This year, a slight tactical change or injury in any team will require heave team surgery imo.

        For instance:
Pep plays 4-4-2 and Alvarez becomes "nailed"
Luiz Diaz gets injured and Jota becomes ridiculous value, so much that it's non-sense to have Salah
Chilwell starts playing as a mid-FW under poch
Ethan Ferguson goes into a run of double digits from GW1 on
Son becomes tottenham main man as Kane departs to Bayern on the last day of the transfer window
        etc etc

the probablity we'll have to WC by GW7 is 80% imo

I didn't say I won't use it before GW19. I said I have no specific plan to use it. Yes, any of those scenarios can arise, and can happen at any point in the season. By remaining open in my intentions, I can play it whenever the situation occurs, rather than pre-planning to use it at a less optimum moment.

I understand the strategy but I think it increases the variance.
And the start of the season is key. Missing on points in the start of the season means team value drops ans it's hard to catch up in this game.

GG if you picked the right assets with say, Enciso, Diaz and Grealish but I think the edge you get by having them if they explode is smaller than the handicap you have watching the big ones (salah, trent, kane etc..) explode if you don't own them.

I have the feeling the start of the season rather needs a protective approach and then start to play wilder once first WC is activated.

Yeah, the received wisdom is to start conservative and go template. My last draft was rated 99% by FFHub. But I didn't like it and made some changes to reduce it to 96%. I genuinely believe my draft is better than Hun's 'perfect' one, and I'd prefer to back my own judgement, however flawed, that to go with an algorithm.

yes, totally agree but I was rather refering to any kind of rating or template (I don't use any tool)
I rather was refering to the focal point on a spread chart.
Rather than gambling with blinded eyes (with no real pre-season analyzis) on who from Darwin, Jota, Diaz, Mcac10 or Szobo will score point, I rather base myself on what I already know e.g, Salah will be involved (no matter what is his EO) and use the 1-5 first GW to then reassess based on what I have seen.

Sure. I actually posted on the last page in some detail my reasons for not starting with any Liverpool asset. I gave my reasons why Trent is not in my squad but did admit I'm extremely nervous of going without Salah - the reason is purely cost and the knock-on effect on the rest of my squad. I'm very positive on the others you mention and expect to have 2 or 3 Liverpool assets in due course, probably whenever I do wildcard.

I am setting up for wildcard in the break between weeks 8 and 9. I see Villa and Pool being the big value teams this year and would load up on both on WC, having had enough time to observe playing patterns, etc.
Absolutely zero intention of trying to hold WC until last second because it never works like that.
And I am prepared to take as many hits as necessary in first 8 weeks if necessary. Could be zero hits, could be one a week - that will be down to lady luck.

FPL *is* a herd game though. We are chasing comparative rank, not absolute points. Of course, if we hit maximum points we would hit optimum rank, but the risks involved in doing that make the chances of success very slim. It is better to stay with the peloton and make a small number of (hopefully) (nearly) optimised moves to stay ahead.

In many ways, it's a boring, predictable game which punishes individuality and promotes group think. Somehow we keep coming back for more, but it has to be looked at through that lens.

Even if there were no 'content creators' and no discussion at all ahead of the GW1 deadline, which is impossible I know, we would probably go into the season with remarkably similar teams. It's a shame, but there we go. Draft [fantasy sport in general] is a far superior game, but there aren't enough viable PL players to really make it viable.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 12 Years

Yes - as I mentioned above, I'm not swayed by the herd, but the majority of my picks are the same as the template simply because in the sound judgement of most, those are the best picks.
But there are areas where I differ from the majority. I'm less confident about United starting strongly defensively; I'm of the view that Trent will not be value for 8m. Others might feel more positive about Chelsea or the Liverpool attack from the off than I am.
There is still scope for some variety such as choice of keeper, Trent and Salah yes or no. Admittedly, to veer too far off the template is asking for trouble.
But it would give me pleasure to see the identikit template the influencers are pushing flounder and leave them all under 2m OR.

A small factor, which would be very easy for FPL towers to fix, is the fact that initial player prices are rounded to the nearest 0.5m. This artificially contributes to the limited value proposition which funnels our interest towards a very small number of players. e.g.:

Player X is 8.0, as well as Player Y.
Player Y is much better value at that price, so player X becomes a complete non-factor.
If Player X were relisted at 7.5 it would make player Z irrelevant because player X is then better that that price.

        Why not therefore make it:

        Z: 7.5
        X: 7.7
        Y: 8.0

All three players might then be equally viable, at least before a ball has been kicked (which is what we are interested in for locking GW1 teams in)

The differences are tiny but they might make the difference between upgrading another position on the roster. If the same exercise is repeated across the entire squad, it would free up a lot of budget for dynamic investment.

I made a suggestion a few weeks ago that might deter morons copying content creators. It was to make price changes super-dynamic, i.e. a price change every hour rather than a bunch at 2 am. That way, by the time you log on to copy your idol, the price might have risen beyond your capacity to make the transfer.

Totally! I get that it's part of what FPL have always done to be a bit different. Telegraph etc have always used the decimals from the outset (though they don't have price changes).

But the problem is that you end up with only a few possible price points into a player can be slotted into, and there is a very good chance that they could have got the bracket as right as possible within the limitations of the system and it could still be wrong: e.g. he's too expensive at 8 and too cheap at 7.5. Which may not matter in a vacuum, but there are nearly always viable players competing with a given player, so whichever way you go you are making one or more players a non-viable option.

They have the decimal places coded in. Use 'em!

To be honest, I did a few weeks where I didn't follow any content creators and just did my own research, looked at players that seemed good. Used the members tables from here to look at xGI etc.

My team was still very template. I'd say like 10 players become very obvious picks after just a few weeks into the season and then it's the slight tweaks that make the difference.

It was blindingly obvious last year after say the first 5 weeks to captain Haaland, get Rashford, Arsenal were underpriced etc. It isn't the content creators who funnel everyone into the same players. It's common sense.

The only difference now is that is easier to access "shared" ideas and exponentially more are part of this "shared" group than the old days - the ownership of players within the "shared" environment is probably not too dissimilar than it was - it's just now that this "shared" group numbers hundreds and hundreds of thousands, whereas in the old days it was just thousands.

In the past the vast majority of people didn't do research and picked their team based on emotions rather than data.

Content creators pick teams based on data. So now all their followers who copy have swapped emotions for data. That in itself is huge.

People who do their own research then end up with the template are in the minority and are basically replicating the process of a content creator. So that's not a valid argument.

There has always been a template, this is fact. However a template chosen through emotion can and was beaten regularly by experienced data driven players. This has been proven many times by content creators who have some of their best ranks back when the game was largely played on emotion over data.

A content creator can spend 24 hours picking their team based on research and data. Another person can simply spend 10 minutes copying that team instead of spending a full day doing the research needed to determine that team. Its like getting a degree in a week while someone else has to spend 3 years to get the same thing.

interesting discussion. For me the game has changed massively in recent seasons and the template is far more prevalent than ever before. And part of this is down to the proliferation of content. We have never seen the crazy high ownership numbers we saw last season before.

Unfortunately i think FPL has been negatively affected by all of this. And as it is I am finding myself enjoying the game less and less and that has led to me focusing my attention elsewhere on other formats which are more rewarding.

FPL itself publishes many teams recommended by its experts, and so does FFS with its pro-pundits.
They may appear to be fairly similar and be selected from a restricted group of popular players, but they aren't identical.
So the template doesn't really consist of one perfect team, rather it consists of a group of similar teams formed from a restricted selection of popular players.
And it also keeps changing from week to week.

A slightly different problem is perhaps with twitter, where twitter users arrive at a consensus that many then copy. However, those who follow this consensus may do well and score similar points totals, but they don't win FPL. To do that, it is necessary to vary from the consensus.

But much worse was last season when one particular content creator appeared to have many followers who followed his every move, or at least most of them. A significant number of these teams made exactly the same moves on exactly the same days for many weeks, with a number of small variations, with the result that at various positions in the top 10k (including some in the top thousand) there were many identical teams with the same transfer records and the same total points. It was suspected that many of these were actually multiple teams created by the content creator himself, and when this was pointed out to FPL they deleted many of them. If they had not done that, he would have been able to maintain these various identical teams until later in the season and then made different changes to them, which would have given him an unfair advantage.

I think too much is made of it, personally. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't as a content creator, for all the roasters out there just waiting to have a good old bitch about anything.

You only need follow the Mods & Cons league each year to notice who's taking risks and who's pussyfooting around, frightened to break the template.

Any success usually boils down to who's putting the graft in following the leaderboard, looking for anomalies the rest of us have missed. Sometimes pays off, sometimes doesn't.

If he'd succeeded and he did have multiple teams doing well and played different paths in a tilt for top spot, and one had actually won it, how would he have claimed any credit?

Seems difficult to bask in a burner teams' glory and avoid a Scooby Doo moment...

The 'unveiling' with all the pesky kids around pointing out the error in the ways and means.

Unless you maintain a low level. What's the point in playing with multiple teams anyway, you're just tricking yourself when you say this is my real team as it won't be in the right leagues.

You do see patterns in say a Mr and Mrs team with similar moves but more risk paying off in one.

Don’t listen to content creators play your own game. Where’s the fun if you copy someone’s team? They don’t care about you, they earn money from it and that’s legit if you ask me but it’s dull. Like many above said, even if you don’t follow any of them you’ll finish 80+% template, not a rocket science. Let’s be honest, FPL is not about skill (loving and watching football is all skill you need) as we want to think when we’re doing well, it’s about luck. Anyone can disagree but that’s not the point. I went Salahless last season (had him only on FH) and without KDB. Finished 2673. Skill? No. Remember when Liverpool and Chelsea scored 9 goals against their rivals? Salah and Havertz were backed massively for captaincy, we all know the outcome.
Play your own game but don’t go full maverick:D

The more I think about it, the more it would be better for the game to remove season histories and just display the best rank ever achieved by that manager and the year they achieved it. e.g for me. 11,479, 2016-2017.

Many, many managers (myself included) play safe because we are protecting, in my case, a sub-100k streak or hit rate. Playing it so safe means we are unlikely to do badly but also unlikely to do very well either.

If the only metric that matters is the best ever finish, going against the template and shooting for the fences would be not only viable but actually advisable. The middle of the road, safe advice offered by 95% of content creators would be devalued, or only useful for minileagues.

Like this idea. It's understandable why consistent top 100k (or whatever) finishes are seen as an indication of skill - essentially the same way of looking at tournament records of poker players - but for me taking risks to try beat the template is what its all about. I expect my record will look very swingy (I'm already well on the way with a 95k & a 1.1m) but I have no interest i grinding out respectable OR targets. Win or bust!

I like that idea, people seem to have forgotten that the actual goal of the game is to try and win it. Far too many are too concerned about a bad season that they never take any risks. Basically the template.

I watched a podcast which had The General on as a guest, he pretty much admitted that it is safety first, because as a content creator is too afraid to risk a really bad season. Struck me as extremely boring, you have to swing for the fence at some stage. There no prizes for finishing 10k

While I don't agree with actually doing this, I do agree with the "protecting rank" effect. I've played 12 seasons and have never finished outside 50k (actually never outside the top 1% any season).

I'll hold my hand up and say I've sometimes turned mega defensive at later stages in the season to keep this (largely meaningless) streak going. Admittedly I don't play any cash leagues anymore as when I used to it tended to be all or nothing (often taking -8s on the last day as one last hail Mary) and I didn't give my rank a second thought.

I've never really cared about my own season history. There are a couple of seasons where I've quit as wasn't enjoying it, and a few others where I've prioritised ML H2H cup GWs at the expense of my OR. For me, the fun is about playing each week and those decisions.

It's the spoonfeeding that ruins the game. Very little diversity . Also the pricing makes teams similar too. I would like to have seen Haaland priced at a minimum £16M . That would have made for interesting decisions .

Diesel's point lower down nails it imo. The game creators don't see it as a proper fantasy game anymore, it's all about how many top players you can squeeze into your team. And they've made it extremely easy to do that.

Fair enough. I was debating quitting last season after KDB over Haaland errors left me at 2 million OR. I had a good run after the world cup and went against the WC strategy and many DGW picks that pretty much all the content creators were pushing so rose the ranks. Was quite a bit of luck involved and I made a mistake not getting Wilson for his haul, but I enjoyed it.

Probably easier for me as I don't have a very good season history to protect or worry about.

Yeah, for years I didn't take it seriously, then I joined a weekly cash league. My strategy was to target a win every 2 or 3 gameweeks but restructuring my squad with transfers regularly. Made plenty profit but at the expense of terrible OR.

A much needed discussion. My frustration with the game is the inability to move up the ranks. It feels like only 2-3 players actually make a difference out of the starting 11. Generous pricing doesn't help either.

One idea I had but I'm not sure how it will work is by using a draft-esque hybrid model to the game. After GW1 any player with over 25% ownership is locked and unable to be transferred in until his ownership falls below 25% in 'active teams'. Again, I don't know how that will work but it will definitely break the template and force FPL managers to get creative.

Another possible solution might be additional FPL points awared for differentials players. This rewards going against the template.

I think the pricing is more responsible for the template, the content creators are just pointing out obvious mispricings and that the soft pricing has taken away the need to make choices.

I tell you what they are responsble for: the language quirk that has them saying '....a Foden, a Mahrez'. Are there lots of Fodens and you are picking one? Could you put his brothers in your team? Could you put his parents in your team? Could you put other people called Foden in your team? NO! Stop talking like there are multiple versions and you are having one of them!

I think it is done to partially hedge what you are saying, like you're not quite sure, either him or someone similar. I don't know who started it but it was Pras and Andy that I first noticed this with and now they are all doing it.

      STOP IT!

Big data permeates everything FPL these days, including decisions.

With everyone using big data, the same decisions will be made by and large.

Until a more comparable alternative comes to the fore (which I doubt), people will continue to use the same big data as everyone else.

"Remove the leader and we will see a different template."

Disagree. The template is a function of pricing. The issue is that the majority on here are viewing FPL from a different perspective to the game creators.

The game creators deliberately price the good players / fan favourites cheap so all the 'casuals' can have them in the team. The game creators want you to be able to get Rashford, Saka, Haaland, Mitoma, TAA etc. in the team.

If you are an Arsenal fan, they want you to be able to buy Odegaard, Martinelli and Saka and still have money to buy TAA etc. If you are a Liverpool fan, they want you to be able to buy TAA, Salah and Gakpo and still have money to buy Rashford and Saka. If you are a Man Utd fan, they want you to be able to buy Shaw, Rashford and Fernandes and still have money to buy TAA and Saka.

Once you look at FPL from this perspective, you will see why you can't destroy the template and also why the game rules and pricing is as it is. FPL is a marketing tool. It is a free game with pretty poor prizes. It it there to hook people into the PL (the actual football), not to be a competitive game for hardcores to only be able to compete in.

I can see what you are saying but also being able to choose most picks of the top players does mean there isn't one template.

There's a core pool of players to choose from.

If Haaland is unavailable for any reason for x weeks of this season it's effectively an unconstrained game.

        1. diesel001
          • 8 Years

The core pool of players (probably around 30) is what drives the template. Of course most people don't have exactly the same 'template' team. But you can bet that most FPL managers will have teams made up of those 30 players.

The template is effectively that core of 30 players. If you want to destroy the template you have to widen that pool to 100 players. That is difficult given that FPL actually want you to pick those core 30 players from a marketing perspective because they are the 'cool' players that will make you the actual real money (buying shirts, supporting teams i.e., being engaged in the PL).

“The template is a function of pricing.”

“The game creators deliberately the good players/fan favourites cheap….”

I would say bunkum to both.

Fixtures set the template. If we had a stronger opening 6 GWs for different teams than exist this season, the so-called template would be completely different.

Yea someone was complaining about eveyone owning the most owned eleven, but it's only because people, in general, pick the players with good fixtures. Which leads to the players with good fixtures being the most owned ones.

              GW20 - Injured
              GW21 - 9mins off bench

So it seems there were two matches when he first came in where he didn't play. Following that he either played 90mins unless he was injured/coming back from injury.

For say the opening 8 GWs, then Fulham + Brentford rotate well. As do Chelsea + Brighton. Also Villa + Everton.. so plenty of good £4.5m rotation pairs.

BHA/BRE GK can be paired with a 4.0 imo, don't really need rotating. Any others (Pickford/Leno) I would prefer to rotate. Still a bit early to nail down AVL/CHE CBs

I don't think I've been this positive for Arsenal going into a season. Squad depth is crazy now.

Talk of Trossard excelling in No 8 too. There's going to be a lot of subbing off early of our assets though.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Saka, Odegaard and Jesus coming off around 60/70 when winning by 2. Arsenal got severe burn out last season and they're all covered more now.

Wouldn't go near Zinc as an FPL option. Made of glass and has Tierney and Kiwior as rivals.

Ramsdale is nailed as can be.

Gabriel might have some competition for his place if he does his hot headed thing.

Yes but when they're bringing off Saka they are bound to be at least two goals up. They only scored 2.2 goals per game last season, so he's already had a fair chance of goal involvement anyway.

I don't think who scores in these friendlies is remotely relevant. I was looking at formations and who was moving where. I noted Trossard didn't start on the wing in Martinelli's position, but as a #8 in Havertz's position.

Fernandes still has pens. I think he's one of the best value players in the game for consistency. He will always play 90 mins and when he gets attacking returns he gets bonus too. His floor is really high and to start the season out with good fixtures as well, it's a no brainer imo.

I have been debating Salah Vs No Salah for a while now. I think it’s the critical decision for a really successful start. I strongly believe Liverpool will score goals for fun, and I do think many will ignore Liverpool due to the fixtures so I really see an opportunity here.

Currently, I have Diaz and Gakpo, BUT I have 1.0m ITB so I can move to Jota in this draft.

Obviously, I will have to be patient in pre-season, but getting a good idea of who is favourite in that front 3 with Salah will be key for this team to work.

    Ramsdale
    TAA Saliba Estupinan
    Rashford Saka Diaz Mbeumo
    Haaland Gakpo Wissa

    [4.5 Brighton keeper]
    TAA / James(or Chilwell) / Estupinan / Cash
    Salah / Saka / Mbeumo / Mitoma
    Haaland / Nkunku

    (4.0 GK / 4.0 / 4.5 / 4.5)

May not end up with Nkunku, but I like the price point. Would like to fit Sterling or Rashford in somewhere

I just don't like having 2 x 6.5 mids. In my drafts have been trying to get to a 7.5 mid for one of the 6.5s.

Can I ask why not? I think those two in particular are some of the best value players this year and if one needs to be moved on, there are options I like such as Gibbs-White or Sterling at 0.5 either way

" I am prone to thought evolution."

Oh gawd. We all change our minds, few of us feel the need to write an article about it and refer to it as "thought evolution" though. This guy is a rare breed...

Totally agree. More overly corporate lingo. ‘Thought evolution’ = ‘changing my mind’

I just don't know how Darwin isn't even mentioned here. I understand he sometimes struggled but his underlying numbers are awesome. Take a look at his heat map and box touches. He appears in about half the games Salah did and his number are basically half of what Salah's are. Another year under his belt, better understanding of what is being asked and he could crush it. He is the reason I'm drafting 3 strikers right now

I had Gakpo in my team. Now I have Nunez. Not sure which one of them I will have at first kickoff, first gameweek but I'm pretty sure I will have one of them.
