FPL Rate My Team surgery with five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman

The 2023/24 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season is almost upon us, with champions Manchester City visiting newcomers Burnley in tonight’s big kick-off.

As a result, the questions on team drafts, specific players and differentials are coming thick and fast in the comments section, so we’ve asked five-time top 1k finisher and Scout’s Deputy Editor, Tom Freeman, to answer some of your conundrums over the next 60 minutes.

He’ll be on hand to first reply to requests from Premium Members in the Hot Topic below the line of this piece and will get through as many as he can until the next article goes up. If there’s time, Tom will also turn his attention to other requests in the comments section.

If you’d like to receive an email notification letting you know when future RMT Surgery’s are live, you can now do so. When editing your profile, under ‘Alerts & Notifications‘, you’ll find a section on ‘Email Notifications‘. In there is an option for ‘Rate My Team Surgery‘, check that box and you will receive an email letting you know when the surgery is about to go live.

You can, as ever, chip in with your own opinions on the RMT requests filtering through – and naturally, you’re free to ignore the article subject matter and talk about any other wider FPL topics that you’d normally be musing on.

Don’t forget that, if it’s an algorithmic answer you’re after rather than an opinion-based one, we also have a ‘Rate My Team’ tool available in the Premium Members Area.

Thoughts? Close to template with few tweaks.

    0.5itb

    Onana
    Chilwell Estupinan Gabriel
    Saka Odegaard Rashford Bruno Eze
    Haaland Jackson

    Turner Pau Kabore Osula

Seems like a good one! I am also quite bullish on Jackson, and he'd allow me to go big elsewhere. Thanks for the inspiration!

Like the Eze pick and can see the Jackson pick for sure. Is Pau nailed and the best 4.5m def for the first 6-8 GWs?

Pau is bit of a differential. Can see Emery continue with Villa's solid defense displays, and Pau should be nailed. He also isn't as highly owned as Mings for example so his price won't drop that fast if they hit a rough patch.

Final one: best combination here? Currently on A as losing Watkins to João Pedro seems least dangerous:

    A) Salah + Rashford + Martinelli + João Pedro + Gvardiol (No Watkins)
    B) Bruno + Rashford + Martinelli + Watkins + Chilwell (No Salah)
    C) Salah + Bruno + Mitoma + Watkins + Udogie (No Rashford & Martinelli)

    Cheers!

B, Salah would only be my captain for GW2 over Haaland in the next 8 weeks, doesn’t seem good value when you think of it like that!

So, I narrowed it down to this:

    Pickford | Turner
Gabriel - Stones - Estu | James, Baldock
    Salah - Rashford - Saka - Mitoma | Chukwuemeka
    Haaland - Jackson - Osula

    or

    Pickford | Turner
Gabriel, Shaw, Estupinan | Colwill, Baldock
    Salah, Rashford, Saka, Havertz, Mitoma
    Haaland, Osula | 4,5

I think the first draft is the EASY/SAFE solution, but I like the following prospects of the second:

    - 0,5m itb
    - 3-5-2 & 4-5-1 for the first 2 GW
    - Easy switch for Havertz/4,5FWD to Jesus/4,5MID
    - Pricepoints covered in DEF+MID
    - Well balanced

I like first draft save that there’s too much spent at the back in my view. One of the 5.0s or 5.5s should be a 4.5m.

    Good to go ?

    Pickford
    Estupinian / Gabriel / Shaw
    Rashford / Mitoma / Saka / Bernardo
    Haaland / Watkins / Pedro

Turner / Diogo Jota / Cash / Baldock

Diogo Jota will be used in rotation 3 -5 - 2 or if bad fixtures
    for the other 4 in 3 4 3

Literally no idea, just like you take backs for a purpose of more points - if they open in attacking position, usually Villa are not relying much on the backs to create chances - but give a change
I like Pau also, may I will switch

For me, I'll likely be going Haaland as I'm happy to stick with the group for the first few weeks. My current mindset is that I won't be able to over achieve right now so I'll wait for more information to make informed risks later.

Last year I done terribly as I was convinced Haaland's form would die off so missed like 2 Hatricks and a double. Definitely keeping Haaland (C) to start with. Debating Salah (C) next gameweek though.

I'm not saying I won't go Haaland buuut it is a Friday away game, season opener at defensively sound Burnley, also Haaland tends to perform better at home. Definitely don't see it as an easy game for City. I was actually thinking about (c) Saka instead as the Arsenal home game looks to be more offensively appealing.

I'm not too sure about the "defensively sound" thing as I think its a consequence of the control they had in the Championship & won't necessarily work against teams like City. But Forest have been a mess in preseason & have a new, makeshift (?) RB in Aina so Saka is a great option too

You've picked outside of the template and good luck.

Gakpo will probably be good but Diaz might start quicker.

Salah in for me. Consistency in FPL, good pre-season and easier to downgrade with Bournemouth GW 2. Also, lessens stress for me lmao as I know he's staying for a while compared to pulling my hair out to all the 6.5 - 9m mid choices atm.

I think Salah (c) in gw2 could be worth 15 points on rivals. My team is v similar but with Estupinan, Saliba, Walker in defence (as long as Walker gets nod in leaked lineups) and Martinelli instead of Bruno because want to see Mount's impact on Bruno.

I like that idea too. I’ve gone back and forth between Bruno and Martinelli but went with Bruno because he will be on the pitch past the 90 and for the pens. And I’m happy to have to Arsenal defenders who have goal threat.

A (short term great…might have rotation issues later)
C (for the season most likely)
B (the same as C really but feels less exciting)

C has the worst fixtures out of the 3 which is enough to not go for him. I would rank this BAC for right now

    Pedro - Haaland

    Turner - Andersen - Beyer - Osula

Debating Shaw in for trent and keeping 2.5 in the bank?

Taking some bonkers chances with my GW1 team, but not changing anything... far too busy today to track any news as such. Good luck all, hope we all score 100+.

Probably a smart way to avoid deadline tinkering. Why am I off work today?!

I like it, presumably you've consigned yourself to the occasional Baldock off the bench when Gvadiol misses out. I've got Walker in defence - all eyes on any leaked lineups.

      Define "good punt"..

Is it risky and a little silly, but with high upside? Yes.

Is it a good pick, for 7M? No

For one GW (moving to Jota GW2) would you rather
    A) Bruno
    B) KDB (if leak confirms he starts)

      B. If confirmed but if not A safer

      Between Rashford and Mount.

Deep is a relative term, innit

Mount is messing things up. Still hard not to puck Bruno with that price.
