I don't think that they'll keep many clean sheets anyway. Difficult to judge whther he's worth keeping through their sticky run of games.

I will just bench him occasionally, as team money left without Salah is ok to manage

As a non-owner, given the way Brighton play and that he attacks, I think I feel worse watching him without owning him than I would watching TAA or Robbo years ago when I didn't have one of them when they were at their attacking peak. I mean RDZ yesterday himself said he finds himself as a striker at times and how intelligent he is.

Ah yes, the reason I never started with him was "I don't see Brighton keeping clean sheets in those early games before their good run". Ingenious move I'd say

The Sterling haul is a perfect example of how the game needs to be played now, in the build up I didn’t see many (if any) of the YouTubers talking him up or pushing the pick, it was Jackson this & Jackson that, Sterling was there, some were talking about him, he featured high on a popular algo done by Mikel Tovkam & he smashed Jackson.

Now you’ll see them all pushing Sterling after the event, no doubt Bakar has already pushed out a tweet highlighting the stats and what a good pick his might be (after a massive haul & not before, genius)

Whether anyone likes it or not, they control the template & flow of traffic, look around your mini leagues, everyone more or less has the YouTube team, outsmarting them or being brave enough to go against their noise is going to be the only way to get ahead of the game now.

Well done to all the Sterling owners who watched the games & took a punt before the event & not after it when told that it’s now an acceptable pick.

They were in a rush to get the...

'Sterling hard to ignore' Tweets out last night.

I'm lucky enough to be in a fair few smaller, non template leagues and the top 5 tend to be smashing the template because there's so many genuine options out there.

I’ve got a little side team going that’s not picking Haaland & going against the noise/robotic strategy set by the big accounts & it’s sitting at 8k right now.

It’s a little experiment because being forced down a path set by the Online Warlords is making the game really dull.

Well it’s going to be a lot easier to know the direction of the game that’s for sure, you only need to watch a few popular YouTubers to know beforehand what moves the bulk of your leagues will make.

In past years before it boomed you had to really guess what your rivals would do, not anymore, just watch Andy, Raptor or Harry first then play accordingly.

Yeah it’s sad, I thought the same last week where the group consensus being perpetuated by these guys were totally for backing a tired Man City and Haaland v Newcastle over Salah at home to Bournemouth.

Seems like they don’t want to stick their neck out in case they’re wrong. Andy mentions all stream about ‘oh I’ll get pelters if xyz happens’.

Seems they’ve sucked the fun out of the game for themselves to some extent.

It’s just a shame Salah didn’t fully capitalise.

Yeah, I captained Salah & while he beat Haaland, we really didn’t get rewarded for it, shame, it would have spiced the game up.

I’m now going for the 15 man squad & rotating fixs of most of the spots in the hope of gaining an edge that way, you know it’ll be frowned upon because ‘you shouldn’t have too much money on the bench’ while teams will be locked into using transfers to target fix runs, with only one real premium this year, I’m not sure that needs to be the case.

This isn't quite right is it.

None of them really no how the season ends other than Man City are up there. I bet Brighton weren't predicted to be top either.

It's football and you are picking players who will score points some weeks, the trick is to get on it more weeks than not.

And if there's 400,000 following the template, there's 10 million players almost ...so you don't need to go too far down that rabbit hole.

I am trying to be neutral here. There is a bit of hate toward FPL content creators or so called "experts". I didnt heard any of them calling Sterilng or Gusto "a bad pick". Its just that this is a marathon game and most of people set up their teams for long term and have basic plan of transfers. Now, Sterling is a mid and there is a big pool of good mid options out there. Most of "experts" and olso most of us have a good mid players (on paper) for this gw. And most of us wouldnt rush to swap Rashford/ Saka/ Odegard/ Mbeumo/ Bruno for Sterling because they also have good fixture. People who have Sterling obviously nailed it this gw with him but almost none of them got him from "position of strenght" but rather they had enough with players who didnt delivered in first 2 gws and now chasing. Sterling was legit and good punt but it is a punt. Short term it is a success but long term just chasing punts is a bad idea.
And ofc u all will criticize when good punt deliver and say "why didnt they recommended this guy for must buy" but they did say that Sterling is good shout. But also they did say it for Richarlison and he didnt do much yet. Ànd no one is complaining about him. Maybe this game Son got 20+ points and all be like "why experts didnt mentioned him more".
On the other hand, they all have similar team and that sucks because most of us will have similar teams to that because of FOMO or we dont want to be out of group.
But bottom line is, it is out team and we make final decisions. If we let them to influence our thinking we can only blame ourselves for that and not some random fpl creator.
Thats how i see this thing, maybe I am wrong about all.

There’s no hate on them, it’s just making the obvious observation that your leagues are now dictated by their content & if you want to evolve & get ahead in your leagues/the game, you now have a very good way to approach it, by going against their noise when the time is right.

They are all reactive not proactive, you now have to lean on being proactive & not reactive if you want to compete in your leagues.

'almost none of them got him from "position of strenght" but rather they had enough with players who didnt delivered in first 2 gws'

That is bit of an assumption.

Everyone had a mid that hadn't fired, but it was just 2 game weeks and most decent assets give a return every 3 game weeks.

I have had a reasonable start at 950k and sold Salah for Sterling, I wasn't going to captain Salah so it seemed like a no brainer. Sold Eze for Foden too so maybe it's a bit moot who I sold for Sterling.

The Scouts, before YouTube channels and Twitter accounts, used to be fun because they picked players they wanted without being scared of what others were doing or subliminally conditioned into similar teams, but now the Scouts & self proclaimed content creator experts simply generate the same teams, driven by being in their own little bubble.

I am amazed how the Mods & Cons league basically has the same teams, except the odd player.

And the same people will complain that the game is boring and not what it was.

That said, what annoys me the most is the constant drivel that is put out by the content creators to stay active and relevent ... are people really following them to know when a player scores a goal or gets subbed or to know the best premium striker of 4.5 defender ? It's now 80% drivel because they have to tweet something every few hours.

Word. Congrats again Sterling punters - there was definitely a glimpse of this potential last week. Maybe this is also what we need to increasingly rely on to beat the Youtubers - small moments of "eye-test" judgement rather than stats..?

That's a very good point and I agree with the strategy you suggest I one wants to beat them. I mean in my work ML even guys that don't watch the PL have the same teams. It's crazy.

But one thing is also true, we need to be lucky as well. Someone mention Richarlison before I add another one, Eze. My team is 68% off the template according to livefpl, I've tried to do different things re captaincy for example and I'm being smashed so far at 4m rank. Any strategy, following YouTubers or not, needs that slice of luck.

I'm not sure we can compare Richarlison to Sterling, Richarlison was a typical pre season pick based on hope, you wouldn't pick him for GW3 after watching the first 2 rounds, you'd actually sell him, most picks in GW1 are picked on hope because we have very little to go on.

People bought Sterling because he has looked sharp, they backed what they saw & got the rewards.

So the majority of managers who didn't want to use a FT or hit to bring in a player at the expense of other players in their team in a very competitive midfield group is because of the influence of content creators? It's always been the case that FPL managers respond en masse to FPL hauls.

I would get your point more if a large portion of managers actually DID something as a result of CC influence, and potentially at harm to their team, but this is really reaching for anything to jump on CCs for imo

The midfield slots generally didn't need adjusting with good home fixtures for Arsenal and Man Utd and Mitoma/Mbeumo in form and Foden was the logical higher popularity pick there for any changes. It was the forwards that generally needed changing with Pedro concerns so that's why Jackson was getting more attention than Sterling imo.

I'd say bringing in Jackson was based more on hype than anything no? He was the hyped name of the week & once momentum for him got rolling, he was going to be picked based on fear more than anything.

He looked hopeless in the first half & a tap in doesn't quite gloss that over.

            1. Deulofail
              • 8 Years

Jackson was semi-popular for the same reason as he was in preseason. There were simply much fewer popular options above him in his position. There was a need for a forward in the absence of an obvious option like Jesus. Meanwhile, there were plenty of obvious options in midfield and people generally had settled midfields after selling KDB in GW2 already.

If CCs convinced everyone to sell good midfield players for Sterling and then he did nothing while Jackson hauled, people would be accusing CCs of kneejerking and not knowing how to play FPL.

And then the season started & he looked all fart & no poop, he had more YC then goal returns,, was hyped as the second coming & played awful for most of that game, if no one was featuring him as the must own this week, I doubt he would have been owned after his first two wasteful performances

He only got 1 more point than Robert Sanchez so the loud hype delivered a bit of a let down return.

For example, you writing this post AFTER Sterling has hauled. The "problem" is only real when the variance illuminates it for a brief second before it's not a problem again. You wouldn't have written this post before the haul for the same reason that people didn't buy Sterling en masse before the haul (plus more reasons). Your hindsight is showing 😉

There were people on here talking about Sterling through the week so I'm not sure theres hindsight about him, besides, it's not about variance of picks, it's about an approach to tackle mini leagues based on the obvious influence of the CC, it highlighted an example of eyes going against noise as proved by many people on this site.

Anyone that needs content creators to tell them who to put in their fantasy teams is probably just a casual footy fan without much knowledge in that case they aren't going to take fpl seriously. If you are a hardcore epl and fpl fan then you should know enough to make your predictions especially considering we are talking about one of the most famous players at one of the most popular teams.

Hers the thing though. 1: the entire FF community is just built on points chasing and then crowd sourcing rationalisations for the points chasing post hoc. This applies to the self appointed experts as anyone else. There is exceptions of course but points chasing is the default tactic.
2: Buying a player and him getting for example his best gw score of the season in that very first match might make you feel like a genius but we gotta acknowledge the luck factor when it works in our favour not just when it goes against us. Sterling was a good pick based on fixtures, form and his focused confident demeanor. Stick him in for a great fixture run knowing he'll probably blank in some and score in others. So anyone acting like 2g and and assist was expected is dreaming. I bought gusto last week because I figured he had good potential at both ends of the pitch and great fixtures. Him getting me 14 points in first game, a lot of luck involved there.

I've been trying to take a back seat and play FPL from forums to judge sentiment.

It seems so many here are following influencers or something because the quality of decision making in the comments is far from what it used to be.

I was extremely active and the only advice I got here was to take Sterling OUT my draft. Well, I'm not watching many games... So I did. And stuck Jackson in, who doesn't look great.

i said before the West Ham vs Chelsea game last week that this game was Sterling's audition to join my team. its safe to say he passed the audition with flying colours and joined my team not long after, i did get some negative comments towards him before the game, and seen others saying "he's a Troll, "a Trap" and "Never again will i own Sterling" after the game, all understandable given his recent history, i think i actually told someone myself a couple of weeks ago that i like all his team except for Sterling,

but things can change quickly in football, Sterling is now i mid priced mid instead of a premium, he passed the eye test easily and had great upcoming fixtures, under a new attacking manager that had given him a big vote of confidence after the West Ham game, so all the stars aligned to say Raheem was an exceptional low risk punt, so the lesson for me is do not hold grudges against certain players lest your stubbornness gets in the way of 19pts 😆

It depends who you already have. Chilwell is an outstanding attacking option, and Rüben should get you some clean sheets and *hopefully* is less likely to be rotated by Pep.

Gusto is a very cheap short term option until James returns, plays two great games, and gets injured again.

Most City or Chelsea defenders should get you clean sheets in the next 4 or 5 games .
But Chilwell playing almost LW should hopefully start to get attacking returns

Yeah. From what I've seen: Nketiah is fine with being in the second XI, Balogun isn't. So the next step is to find a place where he'll play regularly

Doesn't make his value similar to or less than Nketiah's, imo. A lot more to it

Seen a lot of captain hindsight posts particularly about Sterling and criticism of “template” and people following social media content guys.

Last season almost everytime you went against the “group think” it got punished. I’m speaking in very generalised terms of course but might take a while to realise this year that there’s plenty ways to play the game. This season more than most really poor pricing and performing mid price players should result in more gambles paying off you’d think.

People just need to lose the FOMO mentality and trust their own eyes

I am thinking about returning to my 'old' styles 'get hits as you wish' as the last few seasons been playing with more patience to my players. Midfielders may need changing every week? 😉

      1. SouthCoastSaint
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 2 months ago

Yeah I used to always take hits and be way braver.

I kept Bruno instead of getting Mbeumo for a -4 last week and kept Bruno and rash again (due to putting out Gabriel fires) instead of a -4 for foden

    2. PascalCygan
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Wise words. I always try to play my own game, for the sake of my own sanity if nothing else!

Sure, there will be commonalities with the template (who doesn’t have Haaland? Mbeumo and Mitoma are great value etc) but subtle points of difference can be opportunities.

For me, that was starting with Salah (hardly a differential but not ‘template’ as such) and captaining him in GW2, then moving off him GW3 to chase nice fixtures elsewhere.

Hats off to those who went for Sterling. I have him in the draft game but didn’t consider him seriously in the regular game because I was set on Foden this week and, as well as Sterling played at West Ham, I thought he was slightly too wide for my liking.

A long way of saying I agree with you! But I like posts like these, which encourage thoughtful discussion, not just RMT or hindsight-fuelled mud-slinging

      1. SouthCoastSaint
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 2 months ago

Thought exact same about Sterling but maybe keeping faith with high priced under performing assets is folly this year.

I’ve kept Rash and Bruno for forest home and arsenal away

Even if I had brought foden/ Sterling in for -4 and they had failed in the first game, they’d still have had 2 tasty home games to follow.

Going to trust gut and be braver from here on out

      • 10 Years

This has been just one example of a player hauling when the pundits weren't banging on a out him. Its more of an outlier than anything. They will be banging on about him over the next few games (excellent fixtures still) so we won't benefit from going against the pundits too regularly

Yeah I've gone against template this season (as I normally do) and had a mare last week (sold Odegaard, and had no Mbeumo, Estu, Mitoma, etc.), and only managed to do respectable in GW1 thanks to points being spread well enough to counter not captaining Haaland (this week is actually my first time doing it).

Still, despite it feeling painful I just can't bring myself to play in a template fashion so I'll probably stick at it. It killed me last season too until I had a good final 8-10GWs resulting in winning my main ML on the last day

People doing well are those that got Salah in then took their chance with the cheaper mids that have been firing. If they could have had Salah and Haaland along with more Arsenal and United mids a lot would have done with those opening 3 fixtures

  10. Arteta

Why don't I have Sterling, and why haven't I seriously considered him yet? We have too many good midfielders to pick from. There's between 10 and 15 of them, which I wouldn't mind having on my team.

    1. SouthCoastSaint
      • 13 Years
      1 year, 2 months ago

It wasn’t that crazy an outcome. Midfielder who had passed the “eye test” the game before playing against arguably the worst team in the league.

Many just own Mbeumo, foden, Mitoma etc instead because they are similar prices and actually returned points so far.

      1. Arteta
        • 9 Years
        1 year, 2 months ago

I know, but the problem is that he's not the only one passing the eye test. Players like Mbeumo, Mitoma, Foden, etc. are doing it as well and may get big scores in the coming weeks. We're spoiled for choice.

The problem isn't Liverpool's transfer budget, it's Chelsea's, Man United, Newcastle United, Man City, Arsenal etc.

The Watampone mini league with 13 of the top 20 overall ranks.

    And chip central.

    Is it proxy gambling?

Interesting. I've just looked at the top 7 from that league, and they all joined FPL last season.

That's a possibility if he's playing in multiple sweepstakes.

Or a football family and cousins and brothers etc playing in a proxy gambling league.

I doubt it's being done to be OR top 20.

Interesting is they have all done the same in GW1,2 and 3, BB, WC and TC.

Possibly to kill off multiple teams and be ahead by gw5?

Jackson owners have a certain swag in their walk today, you can spot them a mile off.

Why? He only scored 1 point more than Sanchez at home to Luton, doubt Sterling was an option for them, that was the big flex or Gusto (who will be sat on most benches)

Not sure a single goal at home to Luton is anything to get massively excited about. However I do like the look of him and think he will get better.

I’m sure they will spend the next 30 hours crapping it about what Alvarez might do.

I got him in for Pedro before the Ensico news. Far from swaggering, I'm feeling extremely fortunate and still regretting not picking Alvarez instead.

Are you playing Estu next week?
Could field Udogie instead but may backfire?

I am but I don't really have any rotation options in defence at the moment. Udogie is fine to start. Who else you got?

Remembering how Burnley played vs Man City City in GW1 (long time ago in FPL terms, tbf), and knowing what I've seen about Ange and the way Spurs played in preseason and first 2 GWs... I'm nowhere near certain of a Spurs CS against Burnley here

Attacking returns for Udogie could be on the cards though

Also thinking it can be more for the attacking returns so Estu plays at home - will take a close look at positioning after this week and decide

Gabriel > Gusto worked well then. After a shocker in GW2 I’m feeling quite smug right now

Just went over to RedCafe to try to get their thoughts on who would benefit from the Shaw injury but they’re busy discussing whether they should appoint De Zerbi as ETH’s assistant

They are the most delusional fans in the world. Still belive every player and every manager in the world is lining up to join their club.

Probably no more deluded than other fans, just there's a lot of them on social media and every Man Utd player is either the greatest or the worst when they talk about them.
