Our Friday night regular returns with a trio of overlooked alternatives for your consideration ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline. We’ve turned to a pair of London-based protagonists with strong upcoming schedules on the horizon and scoured the bargain basement for a cut-price defensive option at the DW…

Shaun Wright-Phillips

No more than a mere bench-warmer in Mark Hughes’ last few matches in charge at QPR, the winger has made his way into the starting lineup under Harry Redknapp. With Jamie Mackie moved to the lone frontman role in favour of the ineffectual Djibril Cisse, Wright-Phillips has been handed a berth on the right of the R’s midfield as the new man in charge looks to engineer a climb out the drop zone.

While the likes of Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett have been peripheral in Redknapp’s thoughts, Wright-Phillips seems to have his manager’s faith and justified his inclusion by producing an assist in last week’s 2-2 draw at Wigan. It sums up QPR’s season under Hughes that this was the winger’s first attacking returns of the campaign but with three home games in the next four (FUL, new, WBA, LIV) he’s afforded a chance to build on last weekend’s output.

Priced at 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game, it’s no surprise that Wright-Phillips has an ownership of around the 1% mark in both games but, if Redknapp is to work his magic, he could be an integral figure in his side’s battle against relegation.

Jan Vertonghen

The Belgian’s start to life at the Lane has been a distinctly underwhelming one. Vertonghen arrived in the Premier League with a goal-getting pedigree – 14 strikes in his last two seasons at Ajax is indicative of his attacking sensibilities but so far, he’s found the net just once, with a single assist also accrued.

Two clean sheets in 16 games sums up Tottenham’s lack of resilience at the back but with Benoit Assou-Ekotto soon to return from a knee injury, Andre Villas-Boas’ side could be set for an upturn in defensive returns. With a superb run of fixtures to follow (SWA, STOK, avl, sun, REA, qpr) Vertonghen looks a decent differential shout not just for this weekend but all the way up to the winter wildcard in Gameweek 22.

Priced at 6.3 in FPL and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game, he’s far from cheap but as his Eredivisie stats suggest, Vertonghen has the class to prosper as Villas-Boas looks to take advantage of the festive schedule and boost his side’s chances of a top three finish.

Ronnie Stam

A raft of injuries and suspensions at the back for Wigan has afforded the Dutchman a run of starts in recent weeks. With the treatment room at the DW still seemingly packed to the rafters, Stam looks set to continue on the right of Roberto Martinez’s midfield four, with Emmerson Boyce dropping into the back-three to cover for the likes of Gary Caldwell and Ivan Ramis.

Over his four consecutive starts, Stam hasn’t exactly propelled himself onto Fantasy radars. No goals, assists or clean sheets hardly offer too much hope but his out of position berth and rock-bottom FPL price of 3.8 may appeal to those Fantasy managers looking for a cheap defender who would free up budget further up the pitch. Priced at 4.0 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of under 3% in FPL, there are few, if indeed any, players who come cheaper with the guarantee of a start this weekend as the Latics look to put the brakes on Norwich’s recent unbeaten run.

Quite a few of my teams in various games have become shabby looking as I fell into kneejerk transfers which I convinced myself would be good differentials.

Time to sit back in the limited transfer games take stock and reevaluate after Christmas.

I hope yours work out for you Yash.

Alreet lads. Mrs China Mag has the same problem as most on here. Enrique, Sterling and Walcott, means that the bench is going to be important. She has Cuellar and Johnson. As there is a strong possibility all of the bench will come into play, and cuellar and johnson will probably get 0-2pts, it makes sense to take a hit for players she would want long term, right? She could afford O'Brien/Demel + Fellaini. Not great for this week, but good moves long term. Worth it?

The team looks thin in the mids this week, thanks to the DGW and other rash moves, but I do have a chunk of cash and a willingness to part with -4pts.. I need to catch up in my ML, so what do I need for the next 4 weeks?

    Krul
    Cameron Caulker Baines
    Sterling, Fellaini, Sess, McAnuff
    RVP, Long, Suarez

    4.3m, 1FT
    (Mignolet)(Fonte, Shorey, Lallana)

I can use that cash to get Bale back, but not this week. I could get shot of Long for a better 3rd striker but lose the option on Bale... and get Michu instead.

I think I'd go for trading up to some Pool defence and a mid-priced mid: Norwich look good.

But I'm a bit lost. Any pointers guys?

your defence looks alright for now maybe not worth taking a hit on that, West brom have some nice fixtures coming up and foster might be back soon so they might get back to winning ways. You could switch Long to defoe if you really wanted rid of him and get michu in for McAnuff or lallana. Snodgrass could be a decent shout as well if he can stay in form. If I were you I'd concentrate on getting 2 better midfielders in for sessegnon and whoever else you normally play between mcanuff and lallana

Long > Defoe was firmly on my radar for GW17 until Ade came back into the frame. You still fancy him for points despite that?

I'd take a hit for him and a upgraded mid, I think. Nice to hear you echo my thoughts. Except I'm in Michu denial having been among the lemmings who sold him GW12. I think Bale is the sharper long-term prospect, although I'll likely be working both in come January.

Its all down to you on the long transfer, i think he has some nice fixtures coming up and is as much of a rotation risk with lukaku as defoe with adebayor. You could maybe even wait for bale to hopefully drop to 9.5 and be fit for the gameweek after then get bale and michu for sess and lallana. Its tough choosing strikers at the minute thats why i've got with rvp and rooney and i reckon i might bring torres in for tevez because im sick of mancini and his mental starting lineup.

    Nolan to Sterling

2 free transfers, .1 left in the bank. Does this sound good? I have Bale who is injured but I don't want to sell him right now. Guthrie, McCartney, and Gorkss all may not play this weekend so there is a chance I will only have 10 players, but seeing as those three are 4.1 or 4.0 I don't think they are worth transferring this week.

    My team for this GW

    Bego
    Rafael Nelsen Shorey
    Sterling Michu Fellaini Bale (inj)
    RVP (C) Suarez Berba

Subs: Jussi Cuellar Mata (no match) Clyne (no match)

Cuellar is most likely to come in for Bale. I have no FT, and 0.5 M in the bank.
Should I take points hit, or just leave it like this?
    Any help appriciated.

Yes, and I don`t want to take 4 points hit to get in another defender for Cuellar just to see the new def get 1 point

Should I start sess over Nelson and Shorey? I guess they will all play anyway as I have sterling, but how should I line up my team just in case?

Nelsen, Sess, Shorey in that order.

Some talk earlier on here that Sterling may be rested and / or start off the bench. Unconfirmed.

I would start Sess over Nelsen. Shorey last.

Snake I didn't listen to you and did Sess >> Silva, instead of Fletcher >> Tevez

    Pros:
    1. Silva more assured of game time (questionable)
    2. I was going to lose 0.1 on Sess price dropping (Fletch price drop did not affect sale price)
    3. Fletcher more likely to do well in the next two (mun sot)

    Cons:
    1. Tevez high ownership = implosion if he does well
    2. Tevez more likely to get double-digit hauls
    3. Silva in poor form

    Thoughts?
