Andy Carroll’s spell on the sidelines is set to continue as it has been widely reported today that the Newcastle top-scorer has suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh muscle injury. The muscle tear has seen him miss the side’s last five games, four of which were in the Premier League, and it appears that it could be a several more weeks before he is back in contention.

The injury apparently carries a high-risk should Carroll return too soon and it appears that Newcastle are understandably unwilling to gamble the long-term fitness of their star asset.

Manager Alan Pardew had hoped to have him back for the clash with Fulham next Wednesday and duly flew him out to the Magpie’s training camp in Portugal:

“We brought him here [Portugal] to start running, and the disappointing news is that he hasn’t. His injury is in the muscle, just above the tendon where it joins the knee, so it’s not an area that gets great circulation, and therefore doesn’t heal quickly. We’re hoping we can turn him around quickly, but now I have to say that Fulham is definitely out, and possibly even Arsenal [5 Feb – Gameweek 26]. We can’t rush him back.”

The manager went on to add that Carroll is to continue his globe-trotting and fly to Scandinavia for specialist treatment:

“We’ve had a conversation about sending him to the world’s best tendon repair specialist, at the Arctic end of Sweden, and he’s flying out there on Friday.”

Since Gameweek 21, at the beginning of January, Carroll has suffered a mass exodus in the FPL with over 317,000 getting rid, forcing a decline in his valuation from 6.5 to 6.1. Despite this, a surprising 33.3% of FPL managers still have the striker on their books. These latest developments will come as a bitter blow to those optimistically holding on, hopeful of an imminent recovery.

It is easy to see why the striker has proven so popular amongst FPL Managers, valued at just £5.0 million at the start of the season, Carroll has recorded 113 points, including 11 goals, 6 assists and 18 bonus points. But with big question marks hanging over the severity and recovery time involved in this injury, Carroll is currently a liability in Fantasy terms.

Viable replacement options around Carroll’s price-range include Bolton’s Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander who have previously offered strong returns but have declined badly in recent Gameweeks. Newcastle’s stand-ins – Shola Ameobi and Leon Best, offer some value lower down the bracket, but West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie looks the most likely straight swap right now. At 5.2 in the FPL, he has demonstrated form when fit and has a run of kind opponents in front of him which should give him the platform for further returns. This includes an attractive home double fixture (WHM WOL) in Gameweek 27.

The alternative of course is to upgrade Carroll to a high price option. With Robin Van Persie and Dimitar Berbatov currently firing and available for sub 10.0, suddenly there has been a shift from the preferred 3-5-2 formation to a 3-4-3 in the FPL, with investment being moved from midfield areas to in-form heavyweight forwards.

With some Fantasy Managers still sitting on wildcards until the double fixtures of Gameweek 27 arrive, we should expect further funds ploughed towards the big forwards, with Carroll likely to be sold on by the majority of his remaining active owners.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

    Quote from AtB earlier:

"I want to pick the best possible side for the long run, if I dont get the two in now I’ll never do it, there will always be something else."

If you dont mind I'm going to adopt that as my WC motto - it expresses my sentiments entirely.

    Hi all,

Pulled trigger on the wildcard. Toying between which Newcastle player to bring in for the long term.

    1. Barton.
    2. Nolan.

    Constructive thoughts/comments appreciated.

Hmmm. Right this is tough because of the price difference, so the question is would the saving on having Barton significantly improve someone else?

He's behind Ameobi on pennys, so while Carroll is out he probably wont be getting them.

Nolan, since Andy`s out he is 2nd/3rd most offensive player. Barton is on set pieces but with Andy out that`s one target less to aim. Just my constructive comment slash tought 😉

Nolan seems very unpopular on here, probably because most people had Carroll and didn't want to double up, but now Carroll's out for a while I think Nolan might be worth the extra £££.

    Team at the moment:

    hart carson

    vidic djourou coleman toure bramble

    nani vdv nasri bale barton

    tevez berbatov carrol.

Thinking about a wildcard since carrol and bale seems to be injuried.

    toure -> bosingwa
    nasri -> walcott
    bramble -> simpson
    carrol -> van persie
    bale -> yaya toure

    are these good changes?

thinking about keeping bale and change toure to kelly instead of bosingwa.

    thoughts?

Yes, if they get through to round 5 and then draw in that round. However, if their fourth round ties this weekend ends in a draw then it seems likely that the replay for that would be when round five is scheduled and therefore leave their league game intact.

Evening lads. Looking for some advice prior to price changes tonight.

    Stockdale Gordon
    Vidic Coleman Kolarov Evatt Foley
    VDV Adam Nani Nasri Maxi
    Rooney Tevez Rodallega

    a) Rooney to RVP
    or
    b) Rodallega to RVP & Maxi Rodriguez to Ferguson (4pt hit) (no funds to spare)
    ??

Bottled it by choosing Rooney over Berba last gw. SAF's comments today about a possible benching in favor of Chicharito is cause for more concern. It can also set a fire under him and my gut still says he will come good. Leaning towards (b), but Rodallega is also up against a depleted WBA side this gw. Thoughts?

if i was a manager and had both in my squad i know i would play both, but i see what you mean..

maybe ancelotti would turn back to his old milan formation of 4-1-2-1-2 and play lamps behind the two strikers, malouda and essien in the middle allowed to go wide when possible, and ramires or somebody else in a deep playmaking pirlo role, but dont know if it would work in the premier league..

Ancelotti tried that formation when he first took over and it didnt work, particularly for Lamps, Torres is a future replacement for Drogs, simple as! Drogba might be at Madrid next year anyway.

Just a little help, anyone fancy tearing this prospective WC team to shreds?

    Foster / Begovic

    Walker / Kolorov / Djourou / Kelly / Coleman

    Fabs / Dempsey / VdV / Adam / Nani

    Tevez / Odem / Torres

Bit too standard? Perhaps demps, torres & odem --> cheapie, rvp and berb after gw 27...lil' help?

Torres being 26 and Villa 29 may have some sway on Value.

However i agree, he is not worth as much as Villa let alone double.

The £60mil price tag is in my opinion a 2 man club, Lionel and Cristiano.

    Fabs Nani Brunt Adam VDV
    Tevez RVP Odem
    (I'm thinking VDV)

Also which 3 you play from this defence?

    Hangeland Kelly Rafael (Djourou Coleman)
^ that's how it's set up for now at least but I'm pretty sure Rafael will be automatically subbed out for Djourou.

If, and admittedly it's a pretty big 'if' at the moment, Inter do sign him then he'd become the most expensive British player ever, that's kind of a big deal.

Carroll to Odemwingie looks good - crazy as it seems I'd go Berbatov to Van Persie given the fixture comparison over the next month. Barton is the obvious upgrade in midfield with Brunt your best bet although you'd be doubling on Baggies attacking players should you go with Odemwingie. Nothing wrong with that given their fixtures. At the back you have to go Crainey to Kelly I would say.

Right Guys, I htink myself and those who have saved their wildcards have made a bit of a boo boo!!
Firstly we missed the week of all weeks, when all the obvious players scored big
Secondly we Are unlikely to get that same fortune for the next double
Thirdly, the four DG's are all going to involve heavy rotation, due to FACup, replay's, CLeague and Cup final pre and post blues, or highs!

I really regret not using mine now, and am worried that GW 27 is going to be a complete damp squib, with too many disapointments, and rested players, followed by the GW 28 shennanigans

Whoi is joining me on my worry bus?!!

      It's all relative mate.

Many people who wildcarded got 130+ by fielding 11 DGW players, most who didn't WC got around the 100 mark unless they were very unlucky.

GW 27 if a WC'ers get 80 with their 11 DGW players and the non WCer's get 50 it's all the same.

It's the profit not the turnover that matters.

Defence is not really that shit. Vidic is one more expensive defender than I have seen in most WC teams.

I've put my own faith in Fabs coming good in these next few weeks. Most people (91% of teams to be exact) have dodged the allure of unprotected Cesc so I'm glad to see someone on board for the ride like myself.

You had the midweek meander, scout picks(always) and then sometimes the server crashed or you were expanding or trying out something. i had actually started with 3-4, then gone to 4-5 before i settled on the 5-6. wrong call, like most of my fpl captains.

RVP at home to everton beats most other options though. Can't find much else I am comfortable with in my team.

I'm thinking about it but you know Rooney will then score a brace and RvP will do nothing. Vice-versa if you decide not to do it, obviously.

I'm actually worried Rooney might not start! Ridiculous.

Can't see Fergie dropping him, anyway the Utd team should be out before the transfer deadline.

Hernandez is making himself undroppable with form and goals, Rooney is living off his name and reputation at the moment.

Hernandez will probably start the FA cup game though i guess.

Have that Rooney-feeling myself. Makes me want to switch for Berba tonight to beat the price rise even more.

Who are the 'differentials' when it comes to the DGW 27?

    I'm thinking Walcott, Jerome.....

    Anyone got some better suggestions?

If their game with Arsenal goes ahead in week 28, then a punt on Defoe might not be the worst idea...

I'd love to have a cheeky punt on Bendtner too! WIth rotation around the CL games he could get some action in the league, and it would be pretty jokes having him.

But I would NEVER EVER recommend anyone to buy him, not even has an uber differential, it's bound to flop.

David Bentley looks a good one,

      Ameobi if your going mental?

I suppose someone like Defoe or most of the spurs players are not being talked up to much.

What is everyone doing about kolarov?
I waited eagerly for my WC week to get rid of him, but now that im actualy using my WC, i dont feel like getting rid of him :-/
probably because of the cleansheet potential coming up. but then again, i gave him over 2 months which were full of cleansheet potential too, but he f*cked it up.

I got rid on WC. Regret it now as I didn't expect to hold his place for Villa (a). He's got a big GW in him - no doubt. It's coming and with 3 home games in 4, he should be good for starts. I'd be tempted to hold him tbh - I've kept him high in the Watchlist (updated tonight) so you might find that useful if you're playing the WC at the mo.

Kolarov won't play all matches for sure. Think you should chuck him out.
