Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Evenin' gents, how's it going?

Been up in North Minnesota for the last 2 months without the web, so not been keeping track of any of the gossip or bargains. Going to spend some time catching up on the articles shortly but could anyone give me the boring old template people are going with this season?

    Cheers

      Boruc + Mannone Migs + 4.0

      Walcott / Hazard / Coutinho / Mirallas / (4.5)

      Downgrade Coutinho to Snodgrass

    Morning All,

Great article on Dzeko from Paul and the team. Thanks all.

Hasn't helped me finally decide on whether he will be in my team come Saturday. I think, given the fixtures I have to take Pelegrini at his word and hope it was not just morale boosting or language confusion.

Dzeko will certainly make it to some of my teams. If it will include the FPL team, who knows?
I think he has the same game time prospects as Lukaku, if only they could both prove themselves early on in the season. What a great pair of budget relaxing strikers they would make for this season.
Throw Bony into the equation and it could make the cheapest and among the best front line possibilities for many a season.
Now all we need is game time and goals.

Sick and tired of seeing players come so close to signing and then fading away.

All Wenger and Gazidis seem to care about is getting the players at the correct price. No harm in slightly over-paying if it's gonna take us a step closer to the three above us.

They couldn't even pay 2 million more for Schwarzer.

    Keep hearing the following comment
" I like my team without RVP but its too big a risk to leave him out

I would argue its a far bigger risk having him in

    1) You have to sacrifice a couple of heavy hitters with better fixtures

    2) Should he fail to score in round one (more than 50% chance) then price drops will occur
he will be removed in droves by whichever sexy new player does the buisness in round one.

What do you do then? Hang onto him while he loses.3 because he has a good fixture in round 4?
meanwhile everyone else has those sparkling new toys that have just got massive hauls , that would take some guts.
Then if he blanked against Chelsea too your season would be in disaray.
Come GW4 you would be some distance behind Meanwhile we would all buy him for 13 odd mill just in time for his hattrick against C palace

On a more positive note , he may score against Swansea , although even then his ownership unlikely to rise as none of us could fit him in or want to until GW4 anyway , And with four points for a goal , it almost a failure anyway as you have had to make serious sacrifices for that extra four points.

    Still want him?????????????????????????????

      Nice post triggerlips.
I still couldn't condemn players for getting him from the start. Barring injury I don't see his price moving a lot quickly.
I think a goal or two and assist or two in the opening three games will keep most owners on side.
Looks to me to be the most interesting start to a season for some time.

1st. He is a goal Machine.
2nd. He takes PK, FK, Corner.
3rd. Not many people have him because of the price except for United fans and few people who believe in him. So could be a differential.

For people who are not United fans I suggest don't get him, though I have him since I'm an United fans, and I expect him to score a lot of goals.

Swap Lukaku for a Chelsea midfielder. Then replace your striker with someone like Ruiz or Anelka or etc,.

I only suggest Anelka because Southhampton defense will give him a great chance to get points this season.

I don't have any suggestions for Jrod, but maybe play 2 forwards + Zaha as your extra mid or Walters or someone else.

You're right. He's going to play all 38 games in the Premier League even if Arsenal stay alive in other tournaments (as they did not last season) and even if Arsenal is not on the verge of finishing below the top 4 (as they were for the last 1/3 of last season). Why would Arsene ever rest him? That's something that only happens at clubs bigger than Arsenal...

Can you give me advice on how to improve the team

    Mignolet / Marshall

    Cole / Reid / Koscielny / Garrido / Chester

    Hazard / Coutinho / Walcott / Snodgrass / Morrison

    Benteke / Giroud / Anelka

2.5 left in bank just in case Anelka or Morrison cant perform

Based purely on fixtures, I'd have to have City cover, that would, for me, be a striker for benteke.
Maybe even throw Zab into the mix at the back depending on budget.

      Change Garrido to M.Turner

Assuming Morrison is Ravel... I'd reconsider for another 4.5... or not. Whatever. Its a 4.5. If it is WBA Morrison, + marks for you.

      Not a fan of Anelka.

2.5 could be used to upgrade somewhere now... would look to players on Southampton & Newcastle that have easier fixtures coming their way.

So just so I'm clear on this...

Let's say I change the captaincy from my GW1 Saturday player to my GW1 Monday player. Do I need to try and make sure that thay same Monday player is then my Saturday GW2 captain, or can I pretty much start again?

If that makes any sense at all, which it probably doesn't.

Best to have it for a Saturday. It works for about two thirds of the season. The rest leave you with a poor option for the second captain and then the Saturday. A few don't work at all.

I think a top option captain may well be better than a series of very poor doubles.

I think I can get most.

Only because I like you Epic.....The secret to Sky captaincy revealed. Reply from Sky:

You can make one captaincy change in a game week, the game week runs from Saturday at 00.01am until the following Friday.

Captain changes must be made before the earliest Premier League kick off that day to be effective to score double points for your selected captain in the Premier League games played on that day. Any captain changes made after the earliest kick off will carry over and start scoring from the next match day of the game week.

In last season's Sky game you had to make the captaincy change before the first Premier League match of the game week was scheduled to kick off, usually 12:45pm or 3pm on a Saturday, and this would be your registered captain for the whole of the respective game week. This season you do not have to make the captaincy change before the first Premier League match of the game week, you could make it before the earliest scheduled Premier League match on a Sunday a! nd score double points for your captain in the games played that day. If there was a game played on a Monday, you could wait and make the captaincy change before the first Premier League match scheduled that day and score double points for your selected captain in Monday's match.

If your captain was already playing on Saturday, you could then change the captaincy using a captaincy change before the earliest scheduled kick off on Sunday and also score double points for your captain on the Sunday. This would use up your one available captaincy change for that respective game week and any further captaincy changes you try to make in that game week will only become effective from the start of the following game week.

However, if you use a transfer to remove your captain, the incoming player will replace him as captain and this will not use up the one captaincy change that is allowed for the game week. For example, if you had your existing captain already play! ing on a Saturday, he would score double points on that day. Y! ou could then transfer him out for a game on Sunday, before the earliest Premier League game played on the Sunday, and the incoming player taking over as captain would score double points. You could then use your weekly captaincy change to change the captain for a game on Monday and score double points again for 3 seperate players.

Details of the rules regarding captaincy changes and further examples of how they work can be found at the bottom of the How To Play page at http://fantasyfootball.skysports.com/help:

Its complicated but basically there's no limit on the number of captains you can have per week as you can keep using your transfers to changing captains.

          For eg.

          Gw10 Santi (C)

          Gw11
          Sat - Santi (C)
Sun - Transfer Santi > Haz. Automatic change of (C)
Mon - use captain change. RVP (C)

    Boruc, Migs

    Lukaku, Soldado, Benteke

Not sure if Clyne and Collins will be fit to start.Any similar priced good replacements?

Probably not worth taking that risk. He's fit since he's had the full preseason training with Liverpool, but nobody quite knows how he's going to fit into his new team. I think to begin with you should aim for as many certain starters as possible.

Having heard a lot of ppl discuss WHU's back line and starting midfielders, I can't help but wonder why Nolan doesn't get that much attention. I chose Noble over him last season, to save .5 or whatever it was and that was a very bad call. Nolan scores goals, it was said over and over last year in preseason and he's proved it during the season. This time round they've got a great run of fixture to begin as well. Does anyone care to voice some plausible reasons as the why one wouldn't select him in their starting lineup?

There also seem to be some questions raised over Collins. Does anyone have any credible source about his injury?

Cheers for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Nolan will get goals imo, it's just that i have enough funds to get a player who i think could score more.
Others are taking Mirallas as he has great potential to score this season playing on the right of a front three or maybe he might even get a few odd games as a striker

I also have Mirallas, since he's playing OOP and I really believe he'll do even better in his second season. If his preseason performance mirrors into this year's PL he'll be this year's Michu.

I also have enough funds to upgrade Nolan, but those £3mil I have left in the bank, allow me to upgrade one of my Mids to Bale or one of my Forwards to Rvp with no more than 2 transfers. There's quite a lot of uncertainty about so many players so I want to keep that option to upgrade if needed.

Nolan's a solid option, but I think most are pretty wedded to going with 3 expensive midfielders (Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho or Silva), Mirallas and a budget midfielder. No room for Nolan. I also think he had some pretty crazy home/away bad opponent/good oppenent splits last season, and 7.0 is quite a bit for somebody who you don't feel comfortable playing every week. I am very intrigued by a rotation between him and JRod/Lallana though. It may be a bit expensive, but if go without Bale/RVP I have to spend the money somewhere.

That rotation does seem like u'd end up with a lot of money tied up on your bench.

If you go without Bale or RvP you might still want them back in your team within 1/2 gameweeks, without having to use your wildcard.

Thanks for getting back to me.
