Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 4 – Sunday

With two of the league’s meanest backlines going head-to-head we probably shouldn’t be surprised by the outcome. Yesterday’s goalless clash at St Mary’s was a day to forget as the clean sheet returns continue to arrive at a frantic pace:

Saints Burgeoning Backline
Mauricio Pochettino’s side may be toiling up top but when it comes to keeping out their opponents, Southampton are proving one of the most reliable around. The 0-0 draw against West Ham means that the Saints have now conceded just twice in the first four Gameweeks and have maintained the solidity that saw that ship just nine goals in the last 10 fixtures of the previous campaign. The upcoming schedule hints at more of the same – home games against Palace, Swansea, Fulham and Hull, supplemented with a trip to Stoke in the next seven continue to make Artur Boruc look a real bargain between the sticks, while Jose Fonte is benefitting substantially from the new Bonus Points System and is now up to 28 points in Fantasy Premier league (FPL), third top for defenders. Luke Shaw’s owners will be somewhat relieved after the left-back was subbed off towards the end of the match – injury fears were quickly allayed when he took to twitter to reveal his withdrawal was merely down to cramp.

Jaaskelainen the Hammers Hero
Another game, another clean sheet for Sam Allardyce’s side as the Hammers had Jussi Jaaskelainen to thank for a number of crucial saves. The Finnish stopper has moved up to second in the keeper rankings thanks to yesterday’s endeavours, with an extra save point and couple of bonus points taking his tally to 24 for the season – four more than any other West Ham defensive option. With four fixtures done and dusted, Jaaskelainen has been beaten just once, in a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke last time out, and with a home clash against an Everton side with a single goal in three preceding a trip to Hull, those holding West Ham defensive options will be optimistic of further returns. Back-to-back matches against Spurs, City, Swansea and Villa from Gameweek 7 onwards will test Wet Ham’s resolve, though Jaaskelainen can be expected to pick up plenty of save points to further his impressive tally.

Hammers Lack Cutting Edge
Yesterday’s result merely underlines just how much the Hammers miss the influence of Andy Carroll up top. Having finished the previous season with four goals and three assists in his final seven games, Carroll was expected to rack up the points in light of West Ham’s kind run of fixtures but his absence of injury has hindered the Hammers – barring a 2-0 win over Cardiff in Gameweek 1, they have stuttered in front of goal and have now registered three successive blanks. Carroll’s absence has clearly dented Kevin Nolan’s Fantasy appeal and with Modibo Maiga unable to over the same sort of threat up top, Allardyce will be desperate for free signing Mladen Petric to prove his fitness as he looks for alternatives in a desperate bid to turn the draws into victories.

Another Blank for Lambert
While West Ham can cite Carroll’s absence as a legitimate reason for their blunted attack, Pochettino’s side have no such excuses. The Saints boss fielded club record signing Pablo Osvaldo alongside Rickie Lambert up top as he opted for a 4-4-2 with Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez on the flanks but the former AS Roma man failed to reproduce the form that saw him notch 16 times in Serie A last time. For as much as they have impressed at the back, it seems this resolve has come at the cost of Southampton’s attacking ability – they have now scored a mere five times in their last 10 league games, with Rickie Lambert scoring just twice (once from open play) over that run. The England forward’s owners will likely keep faith due to the above-mentioned run of games but he’ll need to start producing to prevent a Fantasy exodus.

Post-match, Pochettino reckons much has to do with changing the dynamic to accommodate new boy Osvaldo but is convinced the results will soon arrive:

“There has been a lot more chemistry between all of our attacking players. Osvaldo arrived late to the group, so it is natural that it takes a little longer to get into the form of the team. You can see they are starting to mix well together, so it is only a matter of time before things start to work out positively for us.”

With all the talk of big scoring defenders at the moment
    - Baines , Vertogen , Vidic/Evra surely David Luiz deserves a mention , granted fixtures are tough but Jose M has talked him up and we all know how jm likes to keep it tight , Add in luizs attacking attributes not forgetting hes priced at 6.3 , surely he's flying under the radar and will play a massive part in this season yet ?
I can see spurs / utd fixtures as being easier for sure but we all know what he's capable of.

I was very, very keen on him and delighted by how his price was dropping. Almost brought him in for a hit. Then I saw him against Everton and I'm really glad I held back. He was positionally awful on several occasions and I can't imagine Jose didn't see it.

I'm still keen on him for entry into a backline that will keep plenty of cleanies and with attacking threat. But I'm going to give him a few more weeks to make sure Jose still likes him. GW8/10 looks like a good time for a Chelsea defender.

Other options are safer and better at the moment, but he did get 90 straight away and Jose played with 2 strikers instead of subbing him off, surely that says something. One to keep an eye out for.

    From GW6.

    1.) RVP
    2.) giroud
    3.) Suarez
    4.) Rooney

    I have RVP (and tekkers)

I'm certain RVP will come good and be top fpl striker.

But is he worth that extra cash.....

Alternatively he may get a red against Utd! 🙂

Suarez for sure. Having him and RVP will significantly detriment the rest of your team, so I'd rather have Rooney for Utds fixtures. However, if Tekkers and Giroud keep scoring (and if Soldado comes into form) I may well forget Utd all together.

This is where I am thinking.
        Currently RVP, lambert, tekkers
        Changing to RVP, giroud, tekkers
        Or
Saving cash and punting on RVP, lukaku, tekkers

        But from gw6
        Suarez, giroud/lukaku/?soldado?, tekkers
        Plus extra funds in mid/def

Mertesacker is worth the punt, can even score a goal or assist if you're lucky. He has done before.
Evra is a very big gamble because Man U are on poor form so far.
Zabaleta is your best bet from City
Agger is your best bet for Liverpool.
Dawson is your best Points-to-price but Vertonghen has got most points but costs a lot more. Get Dawson.
Ivanovic for Chelsea or you could go wild and get in Terry as he does score goals.

      Best bet...
Mertesacker, Zabaleta, Dawson and Evra. I only say Evra because you know how PL is... Man U will go on a storm and Liverpool will hit a bump.

Clean sheets for poor teams will dry up. Chelsea, United, City, Arsenal, Pool always get 15-20 cleanies per season.

i have coleman and collins from the start and they are as likely to get clean sheets as the more expensive ones from the teams you mentioned.

Of course. But you started by saying that the clean sheets would dry up and prove that big attack is better and then went on to say that your clean sheets won't dry up. So I'm not entirely sure what you're saying.

I don't think we know enough yet to say for sure how the big defenders will score when normal scoring rates return. But the new BAPS system seems to give them more potential than before. Whether it's enough to outweigh the money being spent in attack, I don't know.

so if your banking on clean sheets over attacking points its not a good long term idea imo

My stubbornness may be my downfall this year - popular players i refuse to get as i just don't rate them for one reason or another:

    Barkley
    Ben Arfa
    Giroud

Surely players who should be doing well ie Miralles/Walcott will come good? Please tell me i'm not crazy!

Barkley and Ben Arfa I don't rate but Giroud, yes. His TS speaks for itself.
Walcott is breaking in and will become stronger with Ozil on his side.

I think Giroud will get 20-ish goals this season, and that's good enough for me. Özil as a no. 10 helping him out will be huge for him. There's a lot of good striker options this year though, and I think you could easily rank high without him (Sturridge, Benteke, Rooney, Benteke, Lukaku(...?), Soldado, and of course RVP). He's not a must, but he'll get points, for sure.

Barkley and Ben Arfa I can agree with. Ben Arfa will probably do good, but he plays for Newcastle. I think a player like Eriksen will be better value in the long run.

Walcott will come good, I believe he started slow last year too. Özil will benefit him too, and he's shown that he has end product. I think he could explode any minute now. Miralles? I have no idea, but think there's better options out there.

Does anyone else feel like RVP's impact on the rest of the squad and his 14.0 million price tag was a blessing in disguise?

People who started GW1 with him often had to give up a luxury midfield and frontline and throw in a few budget defenders from Southampton/West Ham/Coleman etc. Of course now Giroud looks a bargain at 8.5, but I recall a fair few owners bringing him in because they couldn't afford the slightly more expensive Soldado.

If the trend continues with clean sheets and there is value to be found in the 5.0 and under bracket for central defenders, it seems pointless to downgrade RVP to bolster an as-yet underperforming midfield. No matter what people say, captaining RVP really does take the headache (and no doubt the thrill, for some!) out of the armband selections come Saturday morning.

I have him and i think if you buy smart in def he doesnt harm your attacking options at all no matter what others say.

For example i have coleman from the start and collins and both are as likely to get consistent clean sheets as the top 4 teams with more expensive defs.

It's most likely going to be
      Moses Sturridge Suarez
      Coutinho
      Lucas Gerrard
      Enrique Sakho Agger Johnso
      Migs

I think Sturridge will improve with Suarez. it will be Suarez who will suffer, he will score a lot less points than last year and will definately not justify 11 million when Sturridge is the better alternative.

I'm not sure Suarez will score a lot less PPG than last year, but I agree that Sturridge will probably improve with Suarez. I rate Sturridge to have a fantastic season if he keeps fit (which saddens me as a Spurs fan, but what can you do?), so I'm keeping him. Right now, Benteke is the most likely to go if I were to trade one of my forwards (Tekkers, Giroud, Sturridge) for Rooney.

    So I need to get rid of Lescott or Welbeck this week with my free transfer, what to do (have 0.4 in bank)?;

    A: Lescott to Nastasic
    B: Lescott to Ferdinand
    C: Welbeck to Lukaku
    D: Other?

Hmm. Welbeck is a tough one, limited options in that price range. Lambert is the safe choice with fixtures to prove his skills, Lukaku is so good but he's not guaranteed gametime. Could be the punt of the season though at his price.

My point is I'd definitely spend my transfer on an attacker if your defense is looking okay without Lescott. No reason Lescott can't start next GW either, Garcia is not much of a CB and Kompany has yet to start.

Is Hernandez a decent alternative to Michu?

I don't want to get too carried away by returns so far this season because ultimately I think Michu will score better, but the price difference would do wonders for my defence.

Fellaini said: "I was happy with my first 30 minutes. I've tried to do my job - winning duels, clearing balls, playing clean.

Not FPL wise but in real life, look good alongside carrick??

He played well. Nothing fancy, just kept things simple and bossed the duels, short passes. Could work well alongside Carrick as long as they have enough creativity in front of them.
