Moving Target

Moving Target – Andre Wisdom

West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued to restructure his first-team squad for the season ahead with the acquisition of Andre Wisdom on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool:

The 21-year-old is the sixth player to arrive at The Hawthorns since Irvine took the helm earlier this summer and, as the new manager admitted, his adaptability affords the Baggies options at the back:

“I’m delighted to welcome Andre to the club. I’ve spoken to Brendan Rodgers, who I’ve known for a very long time and who I trust implicitly. He said Andre would do a good job for us. That was reassuring. He’s a versatile lad. He’s played as a right-back for Liverpool in the Premier League last season, he also played as a full-back for Derby. He grew up as a centre-back and played on the left side of central defence for Liverpool against Preston on Saturday.”

The History

Yorkshire-born Wisdom started his career with Bradford City’s youth team before being snapped up by Liverpool at the age of 14. After progressing through the Merseysiders’ youth system, he was finally afforded a senior debut by Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13 and, after playing 22 times across all competitions, scoring once and chipping in with a pair of assists, was farmed out on loan to Derby County in October 2013.

Utilised exclusively as a right-back by Steve McLaren, Wisdom was nailed-on for the Championship outfit. Serving up a trio of assists over 37 appearances, he helped The Rams to the Wembley Play-Off Final against QPR back in May, where, despite dominating for much of the match, they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

At international level, Wisdom has represented England at every youth level, from Under-16 to Under-21, on a total of 37 occasions and has found the net three times.

The Prospects

A peripheral figure at Anfield, the move has immediately brought Wisdom onto Fantasy managers’ radars due to his budget price-tag across the Fantasy games. Available for a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.2 in the Sky Sports Fantasy game, there’s a hope that the youngster could cement a starting berth for The Baggies as Irvine looks to improve upon a dire previous season which saw the club finish just three points clear of the drop zone.

Handed a start at right-back on his debut against Sacramento Republic at the weekend, Wisdom played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 win as Irvine’s side triumphed for the fourth successive outing this summer. Whilst Fantasy suitors will be delighted with his start, the imminent arrival of Costa Rican international defender Cristian Gamboa suggests that Wisdom faces a real battle for the right-back berth as Irvine looks to strengthen following the departures of Billy Jones and Steven Reid over the summer.

However, with the 4.0-priced Chris Baird also offering an option in central midfield and right-back, the situation is far from clear right now. Whilst Irvine has cited the youngster’s versatility as key, The Baggies are not short of alternatives in central defence – new boy Joleon Lescott is favourite to get the nod after quitting champions City for the Midlands, whilst Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson and Craig Dawson are also in the mix.

Intriguingly, though, the local press reckon that the incoming Gamboa could be earmarked for an occasional role on the right of midfield. Pacier than Wisdom, he was used as a wing-back during Costa Rica’s recent World Cup campaign and could offer more from an attacking point of view – certainly, if such a scenario transpires, he could well be the best option from Irvine’s defence.

Certainly, five of West Brom’s first six home fixtures (SUN, EVE, BUR, CPL, NEW) suggest defensive returns could be on the cards, thus strengthening their appeal as cheap rotation options. Wisdom, undoubtedly, has the potential to be a very budget-friendly FPL option for the season ahead, though with a number of ifs and buts still surrounding the Baggies’ likely back-four, Fantasy managers may be best keeping a keen eye on Irvine’s intentions before acquiring the youngster with any degree of conviction.

Where does Brady start, if it is a 4-4-2?

I mean - they're doing a repeat of the feat I did in my career mode of FIFA14. Selling all the good players for great rates but in return there used to be real world class bargains available - Suarez at 27m for example. But in the current market - is there anyone at all?!

At the risk of repeating myself, bookies' odds don't necessarily reflect what they predict will happen. They reflect what they predict people will bet on. Often amounts to the same thing but in principle, very different. That's probably what's happened with Giaccherini. Lots of mental mackems out there.

The whole point of a book is to ensure that on any event, the winners are paid with money from the losers with little extra left over for the bookie.

        Too expensive?

        Check into something for me...

Tell me how many midfielders & strikers outscored Baines last year?

Now, how check to see how many of them were *less* expensive than Baines?

          Same debate every season

It's not as simple as that, its how it affects your squad...

For example a 7m mid and 5m def would probably score better than a 7m def and 5m mid

          Each to their own though

"7m mid and 5m def would probably score better than a 7m def and 5m mid" is simply a false premise.

We just don't select players in a vacuum like this.

            There's far more to it...

Not really, its about building a team/squad so you've got to try and maximise the points you'll get from every £ of the 100m

So its about working a combination of players to maximise return and in most cases I would prefer to gamble on a cheaper defender and upgrade my midfield

Yes Baines scored 202 points last season but there are players that got 180 points priced at just 5mil (and they were cheaper last season)

There is no 'right way' it is all done to preference

Not sure which game you're playing?

Baines had 169pts last year in the FPL & no 5mil defender came close to that total. (Perhaps Coleman but, I though he was 5.5/6mil to start the year?)

Anyway, that's neither here nor there...

You gave me one scenario: £7 mid + £5 def > £7 def + £5 mid & nothing you've said changes the fact that it's a false premise.
We just dont select players in pairs like this.

In fact, you've only strengthen my position by stating that we work "a combination of players to maximise [our] return".

So the fact remains, Baines has been a perennial Top 10 FPL scorer & as a result gives us a spectular return on our £7mil *investment*.

To close, if you feel your combination should not include Baines... fine.
We'll just agree to disagree on his worth.

GW8 is a good time to target him... Home matches to Arsenal & Chelsea in the first 4 don't bode well for him.

Although, with a goal v. United & a clean sheet v. Chelsea last year he truly is fixture proof...

Delighted with this team - think it will get me off to a flying start:

    Speroni

    Caulker, Demel, Chester

    Yaya, Mata, Puncheon, Siggy

    Giroud, Rooney (C), Sturridge

Subs: 4M GK (probably Myhill - want Speroni to play every game as Palace will have the most cleanies this season), Albrighton, Collocini, Ward

    Any thoughts ???

Nice team, unless you really want yaya then you could change him to a 9 mill mid and then put in lamela for Puncheon

Hi guys, been playing around with my team, this is what I got so far so here comes another RMT:

    GK: Mannone/Krul
A bit cliché but you need that sometimes. Courtois was my first choice but then I saw his price, lol no way I'm doing that.

DEF: Terry, Rafael, Cameron, Taylor, Targett
Find it hard to pick out a defence I'm happy with, lots of options but I like the Stoke-Swansea rotation. Terry because it's Terry and Rafael because I think United will do good this season. If he doesn't play enough I can swap him with every United defender except Shaw. Targett is a gamble but then again, it's only a 4.0.

MID: Hazard, Mata, Ramsey, Sigurdsson, Albrighton
Really like the Hazard, Mata and Ramsey choice. You got other options for that price but they've shown that they can be worth their price. Sigurdsson is a small risk, Albrighton an even bigger one but he's a 4.5 so that's okay I think. Wanted to sneak Eriksen in too but you can't have them all.

    FOR: Rooney, Dzeko, Bony
Rooney over RVP, he just costs too much. Dzeko's been good to me last year and I like Bony's price.

    Shoot and cheers.

Not massively keen on an Austin/Albrighton combo. And Skrtels early fixtures don't appeal to me. Then theres Wisdom and Bruce who might not get many minutes.

Still needs a bit of work IMO

What are people's strategies with defence this year?

Like, do you think it's just best to spend as little money as possible whilst having 7 reasonable options to choose from, on the basis that most of the points are likely to be in the attacking players?

Would you be satisfied with the number of potential captains in this lot:

    Krul (Elliot)
Ben Davies | Debuchy | Shaw (Ward) (Targett)
Fabregas | Hazard | Mata | Sigurdsson (Albrighton)
    Dzeko | Giroud | Rooney
