Our Thursday regular casts an eye over the topics to monitor ahead of the weekend’s fixtures. City’s ailing form, West Ham’s attacking trio, Romelu Lukaku’s minutes against Sunderland and the Tottenham team sheet at home to Stoke all feature on this lunchtime’s menu.

Lukaku’s pitch time at the Stadium of Light…
Everton’s record of scoring in every league match this season was ended by Swansea at Goodison last weekend after a lacklustre goalless draw. Whilst Roberto Martinez was critical of the visitors’ defensive approach, it’s perhaps no coincidence that the Swans match was the first time the Toffees boss omitted Romelu Lukaku from his starting XI, with Ross Barkley tucking in behind Samuel Eto’o instead. Lukaku’s brute force is clearly a key weapon for the Merseysiders and with an obliging schedule on the horizon, his owners will be expecting to see his name back on the team sheet for Sunday’s trip to Sunderland. Given Martinez’ penchant for rotation, tonight’s line-up against Lille is likely to give us some pointers.

Pochettino’s teamsheet against the Potters…
After emerging from the bench to notch his seventh goal in as many appearances last weekend, will Harry Kane finally be handed the first league start his displays deserve? Certainly, if Mauricio Pochettino continues with a 4-4-2, the in-form youngster will be optimistic of making the first XI against Stoke on Sunday and, at a price of 4.8, a strong performance will surely kick-start the bandwagon over the international break. Christian Eriksen’s half-time withdrawal at Villa is also one to keep an eye on here – the Dane had seemed to be finding his form but a move back to the flank, allied with reduced minutes, could see owners look elsewhere.

City’s reaction to CSKA setback…
It’s three defeats and one draw in the last five across all competitions for the Etihad side now after last night’s home loss to CSKA. Manuel Pellegrini has pointed to a crisis of confidence amongst his charges for this recent stutter and there’s no doubt that some Fantasy managers may now think twice over captaining Sergio Aguero heading into the weekend. Domestically, though, the Argentine has still excelled – six goals in the last four league matches underlines his Premier League form as City roll up to Loftus Road to face the most porous defence in the top-flight. The visitors will be desperate for a response and it’s debatable whether Richard Dunne and Steven Caulker can put the stoppers on Aguero and derail City’s title tilt.

Januzaj as United Attacking cover…
The Belgian has now started the last three for Van Gaal but was sacrificed early against City due to Chris Smalling’s first-half dismissal. Nonetheless, it’s intriguing that Januzaj kept his place in the first XI for the Manchester derby as Juan Mata dropped out to accommodate the return of Wayne Rooney – the youngster clearly has his manager’s backing and if he can pick up the returns against Palace, a price of 6.1 may well persuade some he’s worth the outlay.

The Mane Option…
Stalled by a recent injury, we’ll be watching to see if Sadio Mane returns to the Southampton starting XI for the visit of Leicester. Despite playing just 302 minutes so far, the Senegal wide man has already scored more times than Dusan Tadic (two to one) and his blistering pace will pose the Foxes problems aplenty this weekend – owned by 0.3% of FPL managers, his differential appeal is obvious and another fine display could bring in the backers.

Is Sanchez the only Gunners option?…
Now up to 10.7 in FPL and rising, the Chilean’s price tag remains too rich for some. Those unwilling to splash the cash on Sanchez are looking to Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott step up and offer us a cheaper midfield alternative to their in-form team-mate, whilst Danny Welbeck could yet prove decent value at just 7.4 – if Walcott starts away to Swansea, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on the trio’s ability to keep pace with the former Barcelona man.

The Hammers’ key assets versus Villa…
Big Sam’s side could hardly be in better shape right now. Sitting fifth in the table, they’ve seen off Liverpool and City in recent home matches and are filled with goals – a total of 19 strikes has been bettered only by the top three teams to date. Stewart Downing hogged the headlines last week with a 13-point haul at Stoke, though Enner Valencia took his tally to two goals, three assists and three bonus points in the last five with a double-figure return at the Britannia. With fit-again Diafra Sakho having averaged eight points per start over his six first XI appearances, there’s options aplenty for us to consider at Upton Park right now – ahead of an excellent run of fixtures, just how many Hammers are we willing to bring on board?

Newcastle’s progress at the Hawthorns..
Only a month ago, the clamour for Alan Pardew’s departure had reached fever pitch but the Magpies boss has silenced the doubters after steering his side to four back-to-back wins in all competitions. Whilst a trip to in-form West Brom is far from straightforward, the Tyneside team have already beaten City and Spurs on their own patches and have now conceded a single goal in the last three Gameweeks. From back to front, Newcastle have options at rock-bottom prices that could well prove worthy of the investment – Steven Taylor, at 3.9, has been instrumental to their upturn in resilience, whilst the likes of Rolando Aarons (5.0) and Ayoze Perez – 4.8 with a goal in each of his last two – have the chance to stake a claim for our consideration ahead of showdowns with QPR and Burnley in the subsequent three.

Triple Chelsea attack is a little too much for me...maybe consider losing one of those lads. Fab and Erik out for two different mids seems like it could be a good move. Balls out with captain Sakho hope it comes off for ya!

Cheers man, yeah i agree, but i think for the time being triple chelsea could be well worth it, may lose fabs along the way at some point.
Sakho is 'holding' the captaincy for now haha, might bottle it and capt Aguero last minute 🙂

I would be tempted to get ADM for one of the Chelsea mids tbh. It's difficult to predict how the Liv-Che game will go though, I doubt it will be like last year when Jose just parked the bus, because Pool aren't the same beast this year. So there might be goals. But triple Che attack is a bit much I feel.

I'd keep Fab and Hazard for now. I think they'll score against Liverpool, and then they have a very good run. They are both among the top scoring midfielders, so there's no rush to out either of them when you already have Sanchez.

If AdM were in any kind of form I'd agree. As it stands Kun has the form while AdM has the fixture. And you could say City's form is just as concerning as AdM's.

I'm a Palace fan and this is what I think of our defending and current state right now. I also think that we are the worst team defending against set pieces I've watched in the Prem this year. Jedinak out will be troublesome for our ability to control the middle of the park and I think that United will boss the game with somewhere around 70% possession and it will just be a constant onslaught. I think it's a ripe game for AdM. I still think Kun will do well but he never seems to explode on the road regardless of opposition. I think that United will score 3-5 goals this weekend.

Jedinak out is a key factor I would believe.

Wow so much faith in your team aye? I hope our poor defence doesn't cost us in terms of transition play which hurt United so much last season. As well as Fellaini is done, I hope Herrera starts in his place this GW - don't see much fluidity with Fellaini and Blind in center midfield.

Still haven't gotten over that "effort" against Sunderland. Zaha being out is also going to big for United as Puncheon will be ran ragged and tire in the second half of the game. Maybe he switches flanks with Bolasie at some point as he is more pacey to keep up with AdM if he stays on the wing instead of at the tip of the diamond but either way there are all the signs pointing in a big United win to me.

We don't know whether he's talked to Wenger or not. Jose has said in the past that Roy is the only international manager that contacted him about his players. I'm sure he did the same with Wenger.

I find it odd that international managers don't always call the club manager when they call up a given player. Seems like it would be courteous or even just to get any information that the manager may have about the player at that given time regarding any possible niggle or what he's been working on with him etc.. Never understood why there are always these weird underlying battles between club and international managers.

Oscar GW10 (though I benched him by accident for Downing lol)

Slightly regretful that I didn't do Sterling>Sanchez 1-2 weeks ago, but on the balance of things I've done reasonably well 😀

Made the Begovic to Foster move last week as I had nothing to do with one of my two free transfers, worked out pretty well in the end!

This week I went with Sterling and Welbeck to Alexis and Sakho with my 2 FT's

      Nice!

Leaning towards Downing and Costa now personally. Bottling out of Costa > Sakho and Ramsey > Sanchez and will instead do Rambo > Downing to allow Hazard > Sanchez I think

I still prefer the Costa and Ramsey to Sakho and Sanchez route, but it's your choice in the end! 🙂

Here is a table I created which might help you in comparing Sakho and Downing over their last four appearances for the club

Ramsey is going... need to downgrade to allow Hazard > Sanchez.

          Will bring Downing in.

Don't tell me you prefer Hazard and Ramsey over Sanchez and Downing or I'll cry

            I don't! 🙂

I might be mad but I prefer Downing over Hazard as of now due to their 4 million price difference and similar stats. And Sanchez over Ramsey all day.

            Good luck! 😀

I would probably regret selling Costa too if I did it. You can't have them all and I don't have Sanchez right now and I'm ready to correct that

                Aguero
                Sanchez
                Costa
                Hazard/Sakho
                Downing

That is how I rate those players and since I can't have them all, I need to chose which 4 of the 6 I want. That means missing out on Hazard to allow Costa and missing out on Sakho.

That table doesn't really surprise me, but Downing is probably as good as Hazard for FPL points right now (given Hazard's lack of threat from opening play) and I prefer Costa to Sakho. Sanchez over Rambo as well so it kind of makes my mind up.

The higher ownership of the Costa Sanchez and Downing also makes more sense considering I'm in the top 500, right?

I agree. But personally I prefer Sakho these days. For some reason, the stats seem to suggest that Chelsea have been less attacking of late. You've also got to factor in the fact that you won't be captaining him most weeks - given that you have Aguero and Alexis. Being a dullard here but pointing out the obvious, don't let others team influence your decisions!

For all these reasons I was set on Sakho and Hazard and was ready to let Costa go.

However, selling Hazard and keeping Costa means losing out on 0 value, plus Downing is on the rise.

This way, if I get it wrong, it's easier to correct!

There's so little in the decision that I'm looking at other things like value lost, difficulty to correct, risk, etc. and with that as a tie-breaker, keeping Costa and bringing in Downing is making much more sense right now.

Really appreciate your thoughts though and we'll see how it goes!

To be very honest, I think we're clutching at straws here. I don't think there will be much difference between both combinations at the end of the season. Maybe another factor that works in your favor now that you're keeping Downing is that if Carroll gets back in the team - ahead of Enner I suppose, he can get at the end of Downing's crosses.

Sakho is clearly better than Valencia, but for Downing you HAVE to consider set pieces (West Ham have most attempts from set pieces) and his incredibly high number of crosses.

                Yes agreed with that.

Not sure Hazard is better than Costa though. Potentially yes, but I don't want to try to be too smart and sell the best striker in the game just to try and get ahead of the game when I am already in a great position.

    Thoughts on my wildcard team?

    Guzan, Jakupovic
    Azpilicueta, Chambers, Naylor, Naughton, Dummett
Hazard, Di Maria, Sanchez, Chadli, Boyd

I like Guzan for some reason. Villa have off form because of the fixtures mainly and they should start to improve defensively. Getting Bony for Pelle in a few weeks so I don't need Siggy. Very worried about Costa though.

I have pretty much settled on Costa and Downing over Sakho and Hazard personally, but really there's not much in it! Azpi over Clichy though so it makes it really hard to decide.

Not sure I'd have Naughton in my WC team... would get a cheaper defender and play Azpi Chambers every week and just rotate the 3 cheap ones. Maybe that would allow Azpi Downing and Costa (the best combo)

      What about Saylor?

They did not look like a team capable of bouncing back last night . There was a slight improvement when Dzeko came on but they were flat throughout . Who else would you bench? Downing vs Villa and Tadic vs Leicester (both home) are nailed on. Fabregas ticks over like clockwork and might get some good output on set pieces against Liverpool, while Welbeck is a striker so edges it.

It is effectively Oscar vs Sterling, and I would rather go with Sterling, even though its a toss up.

I'm not convinced that getting rid of Sterling ahead of the upcoming fixtures with Sturridge coming back is so smart. I can also get ADM instead of Sanchez since he's 10.1 which looks better than Sanchez's 10.7.

Lots of options but my best option is to save and have 2FT's next week when SOU and ARS fixtures turn for the worse, along with it being the international break.

Liverpool have been woeful of late - which has contributed in Sterling's sharp decline as an asset. We've got to bite the bullet sometimes and accept that one has made a wrong decision rather than being stubborn, as most of us were in Yaya's case last season. Form over fixtures, always for me. And at the moment Sterling has no form and neither does his team. Alexis' fixtures don't look too good on paper but if you have a look closely almost all of them are good offensively and ones were you would fancy Arsenal to score at least a couple

Yeah fair enough. I'm aware that I'm stubborn, and probably because I haven't been watching many of the games in the last 2 weekends, but following the stats alone suggest that Sterling is still good value. I feel like the safest option for me is to save FT and reassess this weekend.

See below - didn't see that you couldn't afford the Sterling and Welbeck move to Sanchez and Sakho for a hit. Saving your FT is your best option then, imo.

Sakho and AdM look like a great pair to get. I'd advocate for them.

Yeah, I currently have a 0.1 margin on Sterling+Welbeck>ADM+Sakho, but a bit hesitant on selling Sterling with aforementioned reasons.

I'd rather do Pelle+Oscar>Sakho+ADM for example, when Saints fixtures worsen.

I'd take a hit and do Welbeck and Sterling out for two players who look like they may actually score you some fantasy points.

Welbeck has 1g and 1a in his last 3 games for me, including a goal as captain (14 points), which is pretty decent return from a 7.4m striker. People are so quick to knee-jerk but he remains Arsenal's main striker and great value at 7.4m, so long as the fixtures are good any ways.

He's had 4 blanks in 7 games and that was a very fortunate assist he picked up in the Burnley game. I don't care what his price is he's looked like shite and getting rid of him is not a knee-jerk in any way as far as I'm concerned. I own him still, mind.

Yeah fair enough. I've only owned him 3 GW's though so am not too displeased by his actual output of 7+2+5 for 14 points in 3 games, plus he was captain for the 7 point haul which was OK.

Looking at Sakho though like you say. One for the international break though.

He's looked awful most of the season, and last night might have been rock bottom, which was surprising after the great free kick. If anything, you would think that would have spurred him and the team on to a great performance.

I'm not 100% but I think he was dropped. Upson in is now back in training so hid days maybe numbered. I think you need a bit more Leicester expertise on this one Samian.

Costa for me. Hell, I wild carded after Aguero's 19 pointer and held onto an injured Costa rather than bring him in. City just aren't inspiring any confidence right now. Besides that, Chelsea have better fixtures after this week, and even this week I might call it even.
