Aussie rules for Cahill

Tim Cahill is apparently keen to turn out for Australia in a World Cup qualifier with Qatar on February 6 which would jeopardise his chances of turning out for Everton in Premiership games prior and after that date [source].

Everton are due to face Blackburn four days before and Reading three days following the World Cup game and certainly Cahill’s chances of playing in the latter would appear to be slim given the fatigue he’s likely to be suffering.

Cahill is currently chatting to his national coach, Pim Verbeek and David Moyes, about the issue.

This is certainly a concern for fantasy managers when you consider that the midfielder is also on the brink of a suspension on four domestic bookings.

  1. Isn’t is depressing when you just miss the boat?

When I signed Cahill he immediately stopped his point scoring spree and now this..

Apart from Petrov and Bentley, anyone have any ideas of a similar priced replacement?

  2. I’d say Barry, but he seems to be injured…

  3. Or Nolan, decent fixtures coming up and Anelka gone…

  4. I am on lookout as well and I am swaying towards Ian Wrights son or is it worth taking a punt on Arteta??? Discuss. Different price range I know but need to put finising touches to my midfield to get ready for final push of the season.

  5. This is depressing…. I would consider Arteta for a replacement if Everton keeps the current form.

  6. Yeh, Arteta scored more points earlier in the season, before Cahill returned from injury. Maybe without Cahill in the team he’ll be worth a punt..

  7. This is frustrating news - but I’m minded to hang on to him all the same. He’s been a good point scorer for me over the past couple of months, and Everton have a reasonable looking upcoming fixture list. (I’d also be selling him at a discount price).

An ideal outcome would be that he picks up a fifth yellow card while playing the B’burn match, and then serves his suspension while he is somewhere in between Goodison Park and the MCG!

  8. I’m reasonably sure that Verbeek is only using players from our A-league for the Qatar qualifier. He’s already held tryouts here. There’s talk of Kewell and Cahill, but i dunno whether they’ll come over for this one.

  9. Is there any update on this news?

  10. Ignore previous post. Verbeek held a press conference and amongst his utterings was the statement that a training run for a third division Bundesliga club was better preparation than playing a full 90 mins in the A-league. Draw your own conclusions.
