This Week’s Scout Picks

by Mark on August 22

Better late than never – here’s my picks for the weekend, coming to you live via a bad internet connection from my hotel in Leipzig.

It’s been a totally shattering week for me work-wise so now I must sleep. Before I do however, here’s the usual brand of nonsense to get the weekend game discussion going.

Not an easy week this. Clean sheets look a tad sparse on the ground and both Chelsea and United appear to have tough away games. I’m avoiding Ferguson’s men altogether – I can see the Pompey game being very tight, maybe even a 0-0. Chelsea meanwhile will get a good going over at the JJB but I think they’ll be too strong. Their key players offer value as always then.

Enough tittle-tattle though. Let’s get started with my selection. I’ve gone for Gomes in goal, basically because I fancy a Spurs clean sheet (crazy I know) and there are question marks over the starting roles of almost the entire back four. Sunderland may be able to give a debut to Cisse up front but I can just see Spurs putting in a decent performance and keeping Keane’s men out in a 2-0 win.

At the back I’ve kept faith with Terry, even though Chelsea will face a stern test at the JJB. Again I can see them putting up a frighteningly efficient performance and walking away with a clean sheet in a narrow win.

Carragher sits alongside the Chelsea skipper – Liverpool should be fairly comfortable defensively at home to Boro who aren’t great travellers – they certainly pose a threat to the Liverpool goal but in a week that looks to be lacking clean sheets, Carragher and Liverpool offer a decent option.

The full back positions go to Warnock of Blackburn and N’Zogbia of Newcastle. I expect Rovers to sweep past Hull as I just can’t see Phil Brown’s team and Geovanni matching last week’s result against Fulham. N’Zogbia should start at left back for Newcastle and will bomb forward and play a part in set pieces. I can see the match with Bolton being tight – but I can see Keegan’s men edging it with a 1-0.

Bentley looks a must-have for this weekend. Spurs should right the wrongs of last weekend’s defeat at Boro and are normally electric at home. Bentley has been central to Spurs’ creativity in pre-season and should figure amongst the assists at the very least.

Lampard demonstrated last weekend that he should have 15+ goals in him again. He was pouring into the box throughout the game and although he relied on a penalty to get his goal, his goal threat throughout was substantial. He could easily be the match winner at the JJB.

Ashley Young is another safe option in midfield. Villa travelled well last season and should get the result at Stoke. O’Neill’s side might need 2-3 goals to win the game and Young should contribute if that is the case.

The last spot goes to Nasri who surprised me against West Brom last weekend. He is thought to be fit for tomorrow’s game and I can see Arsenal needing a couple of goals to see off Hodgson’s Fulham. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nasri amongst the assists at the very least. Duff of Newcastle almost made it ahead of him but I don’t want to back Newcastle too heavily in a game that I expect to be surprisingly tight.

Up front Torres is the obvious choice. A game at Anfield normally means goals for the Spaniard and, having already got off the mark at Sunderland last weekend, he will surely have Boro in his sights. However, something in the back of mind though just thinks that the Boro game could be tight given Liverpool’s form so far, plus Torres could be spared with half-an-hour to go given the crucial Champions League game that looms in midweek. As a result, I’m sticking with Adebayor for Arsenal at Fulham. As I’ve mentioned, I think Arsenal will need to net a few and I can see the big striker getting a much needed first goal of the season at least at the Cottage.

Alongside him I’ve gone for a Blackburn striker but not the obvious choice that is Santa Cruz. I’m going to back my hunch and go with his strike partner Roberts instead. He looked lively at Goodison last weekend and might just upstage his Paraguayan team mate in a game that I expect Rovers to win by a 2-3 goal margin.

On the bench I’m offering you some decent cheap options – Brunt and Miller of West Brom in midfield and up front for starters. I can see the Baggies turning Everton over tomorrow and these two could well be the chief tormentors. At the back I’ve gone with Garrido who should keep his place for City against the Hammers and is available for a budget price across the games. City could be okay for a clean sheet with the defence on their toes after the arrival of Kompany.

As for a Fantasy Premier League captain – the smart money goes on Torres who is expected to notch against Boro. Lampard is another option as is Bentley who could score heavily if Spurs can sort themselves out against Sunderland.

yep , mark seems to be some kind of mystic meg :) lottery numbers for next week mark ?

thinking of upgrading adebayor for torres , althoughade’s fixtures seem a little too apealing yo transfer him out. Anyone got any good teams fixtures wise for the coming weeks ?

any responses welcome :D

Jack August 23 at 7:51 pm

West Ham and Ashton have a run of decent games. I’m gonna move Downing in for Bentley as he’s at home next week to Stoke. Arsenal are the other team with good fixtures though until Fab gets back they look positively shite.

Having said that, Newcastle have good fixtures after they play Arsenal and going on the Gunners’ form Given would be a great bet for the coming weeks. Bet that Arsenal’s crap shooting will give him lots of easy saves…

after watching arsenal squeak by a West Brom side at home and lose to Fulham away, it’s become clear to me that Arsenal simply isn’t Arsenal without (a healthy) Fabregas in the middle. I’m going to hold on to Adebayor for one more week to see if 1) Fabregas plays GW3 and 2) if he’s anything close to his usual form … if both conditions aren’t met, Ade is for the off. If Arsenal isn’t going to score as prolifically as they have in past years, it simply doesn’t make sense to spend so much on Ade.

Everyone complaining about Fabregas getting too many bonus points last season now has to concede that it was justified.

brooklyn August 24 at 12:16 am

I never complained :)

chezba August 23 at 11:48 pm

I have Bent at the moment. Is a swap for Ashton worth it?

brooklyn August 24 at 12:19 am

in two games, the only man on Spurs that has seemed useful has been Bentley and that’s primarily based on his set piece kicks. i have Bent and am planning on transferring him in GW3 because I already have Bentley and having two men from Spurs doesn’t seem to make sense right now. I also have Ashton already so I’m thinking of either Alves or Carew.

Leighton August 24 at 6:49 am

I am in the same boat as you having Bentley and Bent (costing in the region of £15m). I am tempted to keep Bentley in for his general assist value but if nobody is on the end of his crosses or free-kicks or is capable of scoring from them consistently then it is a pointless exercise.

Bent is clearly expendable, but I also worry about Adebayor with his price-tag – he looks off-colour at the moment and the jury is still out as to whether Fabregas can single-handedly improve things for him and Arsenal in the short-term.

CK August 24 at 12:12 am

Gotta get rid of Adebayor. Too much money for no return. He is nothing without Fabregas!

Brad August 24 at 1:53 am

Anyone know the likely date of return for Fabs? Is 27/08/08 (i.e. this week) still realistic? If his return is imminent, this will greatly determine my transfer strategy for the coming weeks.

Louie August 24 at 1:52 am

Ya thats the last time I stick edebayor as capt! On the plus side Lawrence showed his set piece dominance could net him a hatful of points at a bargain price :) Think i’ll draft in owen for adebayor though. Was gonna pick him from the start if he was fit and a goal off the bench hopefully shows he hasn’t lost his poaching ability. Then draft in Nani after utds missed game week for one of my sub mids. I reckon he’s good for a few points in ronaldos absence and with nobody picking him should hopefully give me the upper hand in my mini leagues. Of course if utd sign berbatov in the mean time that changes everything, i’ve been dying to transfer him in.

What do people think of the following team:
Who should I change with upcoming fixtures in mind?
Jaaskelainen (Kirkland)

Jagielka
Shorey
Brown
Young L(Simpson)

Bentley
Young A
Lampard
Denilson(O’Brien J)

Martins
Van Persie
Tevez

Thanks for the feedback..

Jack August 24 at 9:45 am

Tevez hasn’t got a game next week, and neither does Brown. Bentley and Denilson are playing in teams that are on very poor form (and Denilson is shite anyway). Martins is out injured, and while RVP might get an Arsenal goal it looks unlikely until Fabregas gets back. Your defence could do with some better players too.

There’s loads of changes you should be making…up to you whether you want to take it slow or play a wild card (you’ve got one of those teams that looks really good before the season starts, but the teams just don’t perform). I’d play a wildy, but that’s just me :) .

Dudee August 24 at 7:55 am

Bent out for Alves OR

Bentley out for Downing

Dudee August 24 at 8:36 am

done. Took out Bent for Alves as Bentley is the only spurs player who looks a threat

Ollie August 24 at 8:59 am

Martins is injured for 3 weeks.

Chezba August 24 at 9:12 am

My strikers are
Torres, Bent and Roberts.
Thinking of transferring out Bent for Ashton?
What do you think?

Dudee August 24 at 9:30 am

get afonso alves

Whitey August 24 at 5:20 pm

Brad – i poastd on here before, but not sure where that went,

i opted for A young for captain in the end, hoping the assists would pay off. But laursen shows why hes a good deptu captain, which nobody ever uses. He has alot of chances with the villa setplays escpecially against a team like stoke or bolton which will inevtiable be tripping plays up alot. who did you have captain in the end?

Mark – is there any way to have something like a marker on the comments so that if you come back later to read on, you know straight away where you have read up to, to avoid having to scan all the way down to something you dont remember reading. Just an idea…im sure you’ve thought of it already =0) (anyone good at IT know anything like this?)

higgo August 24 at 7:08 pm

42 points for the scout pick team. great call on roberts but went for santa anyway. d’oh

maple August 24 at 8:52 pm

Not a bad week, had Deco as captain this week, and got a total of 61 points this week with 1 player left (Ferdinand) tomorrow.

Adebayor is killing me – 4 point in 2 weeks isn’t getting the job done. Definately want to see Fabregas back asap. Even if Fab isn’t back I believe I will still give Ade a couple more weeks to prove himself, if no progress by mid-september he is gone.

CK August 24 at 9:53 pm

Yeah I can’t help thinking its just a matter of time with Ade

Gobbi August 24 at 10:15 pm

i’ve got 57 with Ade being a cap with Diarra still to play.
Having Deco produced a third of your total points makes the rest of your team very unlucky.

higgo August 24 at 10:55 pm

not so sure about ade (and arsenal) after watching the match. they need fab to deliver a lot. I’m going to hold for another week but then it could be curtains. not too much happening with most of the forwards though

Louie August 24 at 11:26 pm

J Cage, I wouldn’t play your wildcard as Jack advises you too. I think that’s being far too hasty 2 weeks into a 38week schedule.

I’d leave Tevez in for one. He’s only missing one week and should rack up some points once utd hit some form. If Martins is out then you should probably transfer him. I’d leave van persie in too. Fabregas could be back next week, if not hopefully the week after which should up rvp and adebayors chances of scoring.

Your defence could use some bolstering though, but maybe do it in stages so your not p*ssing penalty points this week. Maybe take shorey out as villas defence doesnt seem too solid yet and have a tough fixture against liverpool ahead. Bridge could be a possible replacement depending on the status of the injury a.cole picked up last night.

Over the next few weeks i’d suggest swapping brown for bosingwa and denilson for gutierrez or possibly lawrence which would free up some cash for elsewhere.

Only suggestions of course but my main advice is not to play your wildcard its jsut far too soon in the season for that kind of drastic reaction.

Jordan August 25 at 6:40 am

Who is going to start for Middlesbrough up front?
Alves, Mido or Aliadiere
and who is worth investing in?
