This Week’s Scout Picks

Better late than never - here’s my picks for the weekend, coming to you live via a bad internet connection from my hotel in Leipzig.

It’s been a totally shattering week for me work-wise so now I must sleep. Before I do however, here’s the usual brand of nonsense to get the weekend game discussion going.

Not an easy week this. Clean sheets look a tad sparse on the ground and both Chelsea and United appear to have tough away games. I’m avoiding Ferguson’s men altogether - I can see the Pompey game being very tight, maybe even a 0-0. Chelsea meanwhile will get a good going over at the JJB but I think they’ll be too strong. Their key players offer value as always then.

Enough tittle-tattle though. Let’s get started with my selection. I’ve gone for Gomes in goal, basically because I fancy a Spurs clean sheet (crazy I know) and there are question marks over the starting roles of almost the entire back four. Sunderland may be able to give a debut to Cisse up front but I can just see Spurs putting in a decent performance and keeping Keane’s men out in a 2-0 win.

At the back I’ve kept faith with Terry, even though Chelsea will face a stern test at the JJB. Again I can see them putting up a frighteningly efficient performance and walking away with a clean sheet in a narrow win.

Carragher sits alongside the Chelsea skipper - Liverpool should be fairly comfortable defensively at home to Boro who aren’t great travellers - they certainly pose a threat to the Liverpool goal but in a week that looks to be lacking clean sheets, Carragher and Liverpool offer a decent option.

The full back positions go to Warnock of Blackburn and N’Zogbia of Newcastle. I expect Rovers to sweep past Hull as I just can’t see Phil Brown’s team and Geovanni matching last week’s result against Fulham. N’Zogbia should start at left back for Newcastle and will bomb forward and play a part in set pieces. I can see the match with Bolton being tight - but I can see Keegan’s men edging it with a 1-0.

Bentley looks a must-have for this weekend. Spurs should right the wrongs of last weekend’s defeat at Boro and are normally electric at home. Bentley has been central to Spurs’ creativity in pre-season and should figure amongst the assists at the very least.

Lampard demonstrated last weekend that he should have 15+ goals in him again. He was pouring into the box throughout the game and although he relied on a penalty to get his goal, his goal threat throughout was substantial. He could easily be the match winner at the JJB.

Ashley Young is another safe option in midfield. Villa travelled well last season and should get the result at Stoke. O’Neill’s side might need 2-3 goals to win the game and Young should contribute if that is the case.

The last spot goes to Nasri who surprised me against West Brom last weekend. He is thought to be fit for tomorrow’s game and I can see Arsenal needing a couple of goals to see off Hodgson’s Fulham. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nasri amongst the assists at the very least. Duff of Newcastle almost made it ahead of him but I don’t want to back Newcastle too heavily in a game that I expect to be surprisingly tight.

Up front Torres is the obvious choice. A game at Anfield normally means goals for the Spaniard and, having already got off the mark at Sunderland last weekend, he will surely have Boro in his sights. However, something in the back of mind though just thinks that the Boro game could be tight given Liverpool’s form so far, plus Torres could be spared with half-an-hour to go given the crucial Champions League game that looms in midweek. As a result, I’m sticking with Adebayor for Arsenal at Fulham. As I’ve mentioned, I think Arsenal will need to net a few and I can see the big striker getting a much needed first goal of the season at least at the Cottage.

Alongside him I’ve gone for a Blackburn striker but not the obvious choice that is Santa Cruz. I’m going to back my hunch and go with his strike partner Roberts instead. He looked lively at Goodison last weekend and might just upstage his Paraguayan team mate in a game that I expect Rovers to win by a 2-3 goal margin.

On the bench I’m offering you some decent cheap options - Brunt and Miller of West Brom in midfield and up front for starters. I can see the Baggies turning Everton over tomorrow and these two could well be the chief tormentors. At the back I’ve gone with Garrido who should keep his place for City against the Hammers and is available for a budget price across the games. City could be okay for a clean sheet with the defence on their toes after the arrival of Kompany.

As for a Fantasy Premier League captain - the smart money goes on Torres who is expected to notch against Boro. Lampard is another option as is Bentley who could score heavily if Spurs can sort themselves out against Sunderland.

  4. I watched Match of the Day last week and Modric’s name was only mentioned in the starting line up. I don’t think he had a touch or am I wrong or was I making a brew when his name was mentioned. I have him and expect big things from him tomorrow. Off to Belfast tomorrow by the way. Anyone else doing anything nice???

They are my mates now after offering me free tickets for the homecoming gig in Liverpool. Bit worried though as I have just got some new wheel trims on my mini metro. Are you getting rid of Gera this week Martin??

    [Reply]

No, I fancy him to poke a hole in that ‘fearsome’ Arsenal defence tomorrow. I’ll bench Clichy accordingly.

Hey, why am I telling YOU that…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Yeah, he has to go. I was on the brink of outing Tevez due to non gameweek and two 1-1 draws but my tea leaves told me to keep him.

  7. I have the exact same problem - Young or Lampard for captaincy?

I had it down as Ashley, then after reading the scout picks decided to switch to Fat Frank. Of course, I thought, if I do that, you just know Young will score/assist at least two goals tomorrow.

So I switch to Frankie. ‘Cos I’m a Villa fan, and I’ll be happy with three points for them rather than double for me! :)

  8. My team for sat:

    Clichy Bosingwa Laursen

    Young (c) Lampard Gutierrez Arteta

    Torres bent Roberts

I wanted to get bentley for Gut or Art but at 8.0 on FPL I can’t afford it. Is this team ok?

  9. Put up a healthy 71 points in Week 1 and transferred Boswinga in for Evra in Week 2:

    Pepe R.
    Boswinga A O’Brien Dawson Clichy
    Bentley Lampard Arteta
    Yakubu Van Persie Ashton

Thought I would add this for anyone considering making Berbatov captain tomorrow or even selecting him. Quote from Bulgarian website which I translated as so:
“Berbatov’s mind seems fixed on a transfer to Manchester United and raised the ire of Spurs officials and supporters when he autographed a United jersey at the Sofia airport earlier in the week”.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

ha ha, so the potential for a big week for mr Bent then. Your Bulgarian is excellent yer dad, do they even have a word for ire?

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

They certainly do Steve and ire/wrath is easily translated to възмущение.

    [Reply]

  12. apparently so

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

thanks, my free transfer wasn’t wasted then

    [Reply]

  13. Gomes as the GK is a gutsy call … personally, i can’t see a clean sheet (i think the improved Sunderland will put a lot of pressure on goal) but I can see Gomes making up some points with saves.

    [Reply]

  14. I am benching downing for miller up front. am I crazy like a fox or just plain crazy?

    [Reply]

I have both in my starting lineup. Its time to see what West Brom have got!!

  15. My team for sat:

    Young (c) Lampard Gutierrez Arteta (O’Brien J)

    Torres bent Roberts

Is this team ok? Your expert opinion would be greatly appreciated.

    what do u guys think

    [Reply]

  24. Not much has been said about the potential of Adebayor as captain this week - I am resisting the temptation of jumping on the Young or Lampard bandwagon even though they are both in my team.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

The Lampard “bandwagon” has been rolling for years to be honest mate, he’s a regular leading points scorer in FPL and one of the easy safe-bets as captain week in week out.

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Couldn’t agree more but I feel Ade has a couple of goals in him today and 3 bonus points. I remember Ade’s performance against Fulham last season… Stoke won’t be pushovers but after seeing Chelsea last week I’m glad Lamps and Carvalho are already in my team! They are a good bet to win by 2 clear goals but with the array of talent it is sometime difficult to pinpoint who is going to flourish best for them….

    [Reply]

  25. is there a website where a person can see the starting line ups for all the teams

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Johann, You won’t know the definitive line-ups until 45 minutes or so before the games start. Mark has posted his probable teams and he is usually accurate in all fairness:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/team-news/

Not so much a website Johann but there is a Fortune Teller on Blackpool Prom who is usually right if you cross her palm with silver.

  26. i am thinking of making rvp my captian but not sure if he will start

    [Reply]

  27. what do u guys think will bale start for tottenham

    [Reply]

Thanks for your question, Johann. It’s not often someone takes an interest in me.

Unfortunately If I told you, if Bale will start for Tottenham, I’d have to kill you.

    [Reply]

  28. everyone seems to be going for lampard or young as captain. What about Adebayor ???

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Had him last week and he was a let down. Not sure whether to stay loyal against an improved Fulham side at home???

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

he grabbed a couple against em last year !

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

statiscally speaking Ade should score this weekend, however, forwards get less points for goals, and if he doesn’t score he probably won’t get any bonus points. I’m going for Pedersen as captain, although Lampard and A.Young are safer bets.

    [Reply]

  29. I feel the same way Dudee. I currently have Lamps as captain but my gut is saying Adebayor is gonna get a brace. Think i’ll change it…

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

good choice, im going with adebayor aswell, i still think he’s got a couple if not a hatrick in him after his new contract. come on ade !!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

i can’t go with Ade’s after last week. He was at home to a weaker team so i made him Capt over Lamps. I’m going for Lamps this week, which prob means you guys are making a good choice and Ades will get a hatrick just beacuse i haven’t made him Capt!

    [Reply]

  30. Done. Gut instincts are usually best I think. If i think too much about it I’m in danger of losing the plot and tinkering too much.

    [Reply]

    LAMPARD INJURY ANNOUNCEMENT

  40. I know , oh well , hopefully he’ll bag a hat trick now :)

It looks like a hoax to me. I’ve just checked the latest news on the official Cehlsea site and there was an update posted yesterday that said Bosingwa, Essien and Ballack all look like they may feature and there is no mention of a Lampard injury

    [Reply]

  41. Will Danni Shittu play this week? Chose him over cahil for the start because of cahil’s potential suspention. Will he ever become a regular for the bolton team or will Andy O’brien keep him out of the team? What a let down if he doesn’t start again!

    [Reply]

    Gravatar

Kev, I don’t think he’ll play this week, Mark has a handy link at the bottom of each web page to the offical FA suspensions site. If you had know that, you could have checked and would have stuck with Cahill.

    [Reply]

  48. I’m still sticking with Adebayor as captain. I really want to pick Young or Lampard as everyone’s put doubts in my mind
He scored away against Ajax and FC Twente. I’m staying with him.

    [Reply]

  52. I’m playing it safe with Lampard as that’s what everyone in my minileague’ll be doing too, but I know I’ll regret it…I actually think it’s going to be Bentley that scores the highest points this weekend.
