Gareth Bale has just minutes ago sealed a superb Champions League hat-trick against the current holders in the San Siro. In doing so the Welshman added another chunk of millions to his value as his burgeoning reputation grew on the European stage. For Fantasy Managers, most notably the thousands that recently shifted Bale from their squad, the hat-trick in the 4-3 defeat for Spurs offered a chilling reminder of his explosive abilities.

The goals mean nothing of course, not least to the outcome of the match. There will also be no rewards for Bale owners this evening. There’s little doubt however, that those who kept the faith with the Welshman will be feeling rather cozy at the prospect of Bale translating that display on a domestic stage.

Bale’s returns have been disappointing of late; the belated reward of the assist for Tom Huddlestone’s goal was his first points for six matches. With Rafael Van der Vaart flourishing alongside him for just a million or so more, it’s little wonder that we’ve seen significant sales. Almost 100,000 managers have got rid since Gameweek 7; they will be fidgeting rather uncomfortably after tonight’s display.

A testing match-up with Everton beckons at the Lane this weekend and tonight’s showing will surely have removed any threat of Bale being rested or indeed shifted to left-back. Having torn apart one of Europe’s best defences, there’s surely no way we will see Bale at full-back in the immediate future. That’s got to be good news for Fantasy Managers or at least those who have resolved the Bale vs Van der Vaart issue in their heads.

There will doubtless be more on that little puzzle to come on these pages, for now we may have just seen the first FPL bandwagon prompted by a European tie.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think u if u have £2m in the bank u should sway Dempsey£6.7m for Nani£8.7m as with the return of Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson Dempsey is likely to be shifted from up front to out on the right which will see significantly less chances to get goals and I think United have a good run of fixtures and Nani is on fire I think he is going to be essential this season and if he can keep up this form his price tag is going to shoot up so you will be gettin points and money hes a safe bet over the next few weeks in my opinion I have just used my wildcard and I seriously weakened my defence to get in the likes of Torres and Fabregas who are both of form but I need to take a gamble a lot of the people in my league have a lot of similar players so I sold Malouda Alex O Shea and Berbatov and its a big risk so hopefully I dont regret it my Team is -AL-Habsi-Coleman-Elmohamady-Konchesky-Albrighton-Fabregas-Van der Vaart-Nani-Drogba-Torres-Tevez with Alcaraz-Simpson-Fergson and Mignolet on the bench what do u think?

hi guys , first year of playing fantasy ... dam its frustrating sometimes but all fun ....
Just curious about your opinions about these changes..
      My current team

      foster/carson
      dann/alex/samba/osea/faye
      nani/malouda/etherington/toure/adam
      drogba/tevez/berbatov

i want to get in fabregas next week…

      so im thinking..
      a) Malouda and berbatov -> fabregas and odemwingie

b)Malouda and berbatov -> fabregas and odemwingie
which lets me bring in either nasri or walcott for toure the week after

c)Malouda and berbatov -> fabregas and varney
which lets me bring in VDV for toure the week after

d)Malouda and alex -> fabregas and coleman
      Thanks guys….

Lotta people came on here and said they were great because they held onto Bale, and how people were rubbish to get rid of him. What utter horseshit.

When VDV is playing, he’s infinitely the better option, as he’s jsut off the striker.

Bale is known by alot of English teams now, Inter peobably hadn’t really given him as much respect as the likes of Everton will, as INter don’t really know him- even though Benitez knew him- Benitez is a crap manager i reckon, so that’s negligible.

    Plus, the game was over.

Don’t get me wrong, i’m all about Bale, but the bottom line is, with no performing strikers, having two spurs midfielders is too much with the availability thats there, and VDV is the logical, percentage choice, and he has form to boot.

Well done gareth, i think you’re fantastic, but i don’t regret moving you on for VDV, not one iota.

a few thoughts for bale owners:

    1. bale was by far spur's best player last night, but he was shattered afterwards and may be rested, though its unlikely
    2. BAE played the full 90mins last night and was utter sh*t, so bale could end up playing LB on saturday
    3. spurs play in the early kick off on saturday
    4. bale was amazing last night when VDV was suspended and modric played less than 10 mins, with vdv and modric fresh on saturday and bale knackered, his returns will be significantly less
    5. spurs like most teams seem to suffer from CL hangover, like when they lost at home to wigan after a CL match, a rejuvenated everton could easily snatch the win
    6. VDV's price is constantly on the rise, it may be hard to get him once he breaks 8mil which is looking likely to happen before saturday

    enjoy

yeah, reckon so. I made the mistake of disregarding goalkeepers and defenders in my first season, and it adds up.

When you think that a good goalkeeper can get around the 200pt mark, usually for about 6m, it's unlikely you're going to get better value by spending it on a few more expensive mids.

really? goalkeepers rarely get that much. the point of having cheap keepers and defenders is that u can still score high if u rotate them well, although it is a skill that not all have. in this current season the tactic is working well however as many of the big teams are struggling to find clean sheets

+1. A df from the same team around the same price will also get cs points, but is much more likely to get a goal, assist or bps.

The point of cheap keepers is that they make saves even when they concede, mitigating the damage. This is why I now hate Krul.

always better to look at the facts before making statements like GKs are quality.

GKs get points for saves, pens saves and bp's if they put in a match winning performance. its far more likely that that sort of GK will come from a mid table team than a top team.

Reina for instance, is generally regarded as the best keeper in the league, but he also makes the least saves.

The difference between a good cheap keeper (Hart, Shwarzer last 2 seasons) and the top scoring keeper (Cech, Reina etc) is less than 20pts. The extra 2mln is better spent elsewhere

having one 3.9m defender is fine especially in the case of simpson, but having 2 is ridiculous, at the very lest u should upgrade to a 4.0 defender. the core of ur team will be a 1-4-2 so u need to have at least 2 more reliable defenders e.g. elmo or even coleman at 4.4. Varney however looks good at 4.5 in a attacking side

After the game the another night Ancelotti hinted about Zhirkov's use as a left back and has been slipping lots of hints recently about a rest for Cole.

I am one of a few who would love to see that not being on the cole-mobile (unfortunately better performance and reliability than a wagon).

Good morning all, I'm off on a stag do tomorrow so just finalising my wildcard today. I'd appreciate the input from you morning'eers have I made any glaring errors for the next GW with this lineup?
    Al-Habsi
    Konchesky, Elmo, Bosingwa
    Nani, Fabregas, Boa Morte, VdV
    Drogba (c), Berbatov, Tevez

    Subs: Gilks, Adam, Tamas, Simpson

I have a plan for Bosingwa so no worries about his long term suitability, and I am fully aware that Boa Morte is shite - he is just a short term pick as I think he will do well against Perch (I think Simpson will be on the bench not starting this weekend).

Cheers for the input folks, good to have a sounding board.
CS I know what you mean about the frontline, its a slightly risky strategy but my thinking is that with the Rooney situation Berbatov becomes the main man for leading the line for United, they also have nice fixtures coming up too. Originally I had Malouda in there, I had him since the start, but when messing around trying out possibilities with this wildcard I sold him and then found that he would cost 10.4 to bring back in. Can't moan too much as it was my mistake not to check that rule out, but there should be an 'undo' button when playing a wildcard before the next GW starts.
Yes Boa Morte is poor, but he is cheap and West Ham have some cracking fixtures - it was him or Dyer and I HATE Dyer! 🙂
I can see him doing well against Newcastle and he is a short term measure. Bosingwa will go and one of Coleman/Samba/Jones/Jagielka will come in allowing cash to upgrade Boa Morte.
Incidentally chaps if I was going for a cheap striker it would be Varney not Carroll I'd go for.

Well CS the sort of simple way I think about the game is to try and predict who will finish where at the end of the season and to try and accommodate their key attacking players in my lineup, in the basic idea that they should score well more often than not. I see VdV as Tottenhams key attacking player and I imagine they are a top six side. It may be wise to drop all Spurs players during a particularly tough run of fixtures but I'd like at least VdV for the longterm

Im sticking mate. W Ham are poo and there are two ways he can react to this (being what appears to be a thug). If he goes south he'll go soon, but Im saving my second change for the big man to return next week....then I can look at other bargain strikers. You running?

Yeah he's gone from my WC team (Tevez, Berbatov, Drogba up front). I just think that with his latest misdemeanours he might be more prone to being dropped, particularly as Ameobi has done well when given a chance this season. In addition to that if Hughton sticks to the horrible 4-4-2 then Carroll is no longer the focus of all the attacks and his returns may diminish.

I really hope he doesnt play 4-4-2 we dont look as solid or dangerous with it. I can see what you are saying happening but as I say Im not willing to loose 4 points to swap him right now, Im going to play him this week too..as wont you feel like a judas if he does well 😉
Poor front line youve assembled there! How the WC going? Set on it yet?

Morning all. Have one transfer this week, thinking Richards > Boswinga. Currently:

    Jussi

    Richards Toure Elmo (O'Shea Foley)

    Nani Malouda Gerrard Adam (Barton)

    Drogba Berbatov Carroll

Have got myself in slight fix with having two city defenders who may not play. Will wait for tomorrow to confirm Chelsea line-up and also see who plays tonight out of Boateng and richards but can anyone see anything that would improve upon Richards > Bos (i appreciate Toure is less likely to play than richards but see him as more of a log-term keeper - at least until Boateng secures starting spot).
    Thanks

    Atilla-cant reply anymore!

To WC, looks good, although no matter your explanation seeing B Morte in there is WIERD! front line v strong..fair play...clearly you dont believe there will be amny CS for a while looking at your keepers! I can see why you have done that, and fair play if got Bosingwa plan, he would be the qu....
Good luck, have a good weekend too.I should be working now but cant focus!

Cheers mate - going on a hungover tour of SJP (St James's Park not Sarah Jessica Parker thankfully) so should be good, especially as there are only two of us toon fans out of 15 - expecting plenty of "we'll bring our own trophies" comments. Swines. 🙂
Boa Morte is a madcap scheme I agree, but we shall see!

A nice 3-4 win would suit, with a shock hattrick for Boa Morte. 😉 Good to see Simpson do so well in the reserves on tuesday though, we beat Bolton 4-1 and he got an assist.

Good policy mate. I do like a bargain though and I doubt he'll be 3.9 for too long.

Not the results most would like to hear. I don't see United or Tottenham losing this weekend. These predictions have absolutely no justification

Just doing my bets for the weekend, Blackpool at 10/3 to beat Birmingham seems like decent value.

who to drop from these attacking 8 this gameweek?

    malouda, vdv, nani, adam, n'zog

    berbatov, drogba, carroll

at the moment, I'm thinking Berbatov, am I mad?

    Carson ¦ Foster
    Cole A ¦ Williamson ¦ Elmohamady ¦ Foley ¦ Toure
    Scholes¦ Malouda ¦ Bale ¦ Nani ¦ Nolan
    Carrol ¦ Drogba ¦ Berbatov

    0.6 in the bank

Scholes out for Adam or VdV? Right now I'm leaning to VdV in this week and, depending on how Bale now does, swapping him for Adam the next (otherwise swapping Nolan for Adam that week).

Not sure about Scholes in there especially when you already have Nani and Berbatov. Adam or VdV? Well, against the popular opinion, I too would lean to VdV.
