Season Review – Team of the Season – Dirk Kuyt

Five gameweeks into the season and Chelsea and Florent Malouda looked unstoppable. The Frenchman was the Fantasy player to have in midfield – 6 goals in 5 gameweeks saw his price rocket to 10.0 from 9.5, with Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt one player who was undoubtedly cleared out to make way for the on-fire winger. By the end of the season however, the situation had reversed spectacularly.

While Malouda’s form petered out, almost in tandem, Liverpool’s industrious Dutchman began to flourish. Circumstances fell for Kuyt as the arrival of Kenny Dalglish and injuries to Steven Gerrard and Andy Carroll handed him new responsibilities and opportunities. Kuyt gobbled them up and ended the season with an extraordinary run of goals to earn his place in our Fantasy team of the season.

The Statistics

Kuyt was initially available for a sum of 9.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game, a drop from his 9.5 valuation in 2009/10. Nine goals and 4 assists in that season suggested that Kuyt could offer value but his early campaign did not go well. Liverpool stalled under Roy Hodgson, while Kuyt suffered both ankle and shoulder injuries which restricted him to just four five starts in the opening ten gameweeks. One goal in that spell meant that Kuyt suffered transfer deficits in 9 of the first 11 gameweeks – Fantasy managers had turned their back on Dirk Kuyt.

By the time that Hodgson departed and Kenny Dalglish took the reins, Kuyt’s value had dropped to 8.7. Three goals for the season with just a single assist and zero Bonus Points barely hinted at the transformation which would then take place.

Kuyt scored in Dalglish’s first home fixture in charge in the 2-2 draw with Merseyside rivals Everton but it was not until gameweek 29 that the Dutchman exploded. An incredible hat-trick in the 3-1 over United at Anfield was possibly the high point in Kuyt’s Liverpool tenure. It also marked Steven Gerrard’s last game of the season as the Liverpool skipper bowed out with a groin injury. That was a significant event for Kuyt, who, off the back of his hat-trick, then took over spot-kick duties.

Having already scored from the spot against Everton with Gerrard absent, Kuyt converted three more penalties before the end of the season. Nine goals in the last 9 gameweeks took his season tally to 13 – his biggest league haul in Liverpool colours. An impressive 8 assists and 14 Bonus Points capped a superb spell for the Dutchman and this end of season form duly saw him claim a top four spot in team of the season midfield, ahead of the aforementioned Malouda.

The Prospects

Astute Fantasy managers will not be seduced by Kuyt’s devastating end to the season. Circumstances fell for the Dutchman and with Steven Gerrard set to return to the starting XI and presumably penalty duties, Kuyt will immediately have his goal potential cut. Perhaps more significantly, Andy Carroll will be fit enough to renew a partnership with Luis Suarez that stuttered due to injuries for the big Geordie. That will likely see Kuyt figure in a wider role, perhaps on the right-flank. With goal scoring opportunities perhaps cut then, Kuyt will be a far less attractive proposition. When you couple that with a likely price rise back to 9.5 or even 10.0, Kuyt seems unlikely to attract heavy interest in our initial squads.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Cheer up, Soop. I know its not every season that you lose out on H2H 6th place and promotion in the FINAL gameweek but theres always next year.

If only you hadn't wasted a perfectly good transfer on Scholes 🙁

Yeah, there's always next week, but as Andy said, I don't mind at all, I had a pretty good season.

The biggest "dissapointment" in my eyes was the red arrow at the end.

I was so close to getting in that other Man U guy too, Anderson, but I figured Scholes would do the whole "right place right time" thing with Blackpools defence.

I was walking down the street when out the corner of my eye, I saw a license plate that read the following:

    I X M N I Z

I then knew the occupation the owner of the car had. What was the car's owner's job?

yeah, not from scratch. I'm 'portableising' an existing console. As far as I've calculated it's a pretty straightforward process, just have to move some stuff around on the motherboard to lower the profile, replace some caps with tantalum caps, and install a screen.

Plus, mines gonna have hinges. Then later, I'll have a crack at installing an internal battery and maybe a joypad.

Yeah, I've got a portable one, but because they're 20 years old, the screen technology of that time wasn't very good (even though for the time, it was an incredible peice of kit).

Well, if you fancy a crack at something I'll help you out.

But I'd start simple - I started by region-modding a Megadrive, which is good because it's quite forgiving, and my soldering was shit.

Then I started (very tentatively) on a Nomad - region mod, backlight replacement, then a screen replacement.

Yeah, they're fricking amazing. I've had one for a long time, but I'd imagine for someone casually into Megadrive/SNES games, it must be pretty exciting to find out that there's basically a third option with a shitload of great games.

                    such as???

it kills me that i sold mine about 12 years ago

i had a plethora of awesome games, including some rarities, and games from america and japan, with the foreign adaptor, and unofficial stuff such as the 'cheat adaptor' that you plugged games into then plugged that into the snes

had accessories like the scope too

                    sigh

Yeah, I was gonna get Mega Bomberman, but it's essentially the same as Bomberman '94 on the PC Engine, and since I already have the multi-tap for that, it's better.

No Mario Kart, partly because I used to be terrible at it, and partly because it's more expensive than I can justify. I do miss it though.

And Speedball 2 on the Amiga... what a game. Brutal Deluxe!

Do you think is possible to build some kind of portable device that allows you to play your pc games(excluding laptops of course)?

of course, but the modular nature of PC's does not lend itself well to portability. You'd never be able to make anything better than existing devices.

Yeah - that's one thing I miss about the old Windows phones actually. I used to play SNES games on my XDA II.

But depending on what games you want to play, you would never be able to build a better device than existing portable PCs.

Bent will be a great option next year but he will be missing out on a lot of assists from Downing and Young, still a good option.

Don't understand why Hughes wanted to leave Fulham for Villa, especially when Downing and Young look set to move on.

I think he'd start too, and would be a great buy for Arsenal i think.

Even if he was 6m i'd prob still bring him in!

Hopefully if he goes, it will be after the FPL prices display, that way his price would be fixed, even if he moved to Arsenal.

    Why oi.

After a serious stint of exams and educational kaffufle; I now find myself totally free of responsibility. Shame the flippin season has just finished. Alas I put in hard graph when I could and leave feeling fair to middle'n in terms of my final position. 20,000th isnt brilliant but it'll do.

However...My main concern is the results of the Toffs Vs Prolls. Members v Non Members. Attila was the man for this.

Can anyone link me to some final results. I hope they havent been tampered with to enhance the status of the "buying" public. Independent adjudication must have fallen into play. haha.

    Nice one then.

Right I'll do up a results post for ya Horlicks. Unfortuntely scoring stopped in GW31 as a few numpties left without warning and I didn't have chance to get a team link for one of them.
Annoying! So anyroad, I'll calculate the scores (most people lost interest so I havent bothered doing it until now) and get back to you in about 15mins.

    Evening fella's
You'll never guess what happened to me, I was a bit pissed last night and I thought nothing would please me more than to tidy up my garden. I have a very saucy neighbour next door, she's such a flirt, so I wanted to impress her with my impeccable borders and neatly trimmed bush.
Anyway I went into the shed only to slip in a little puddle of willy milk, and as I got up I noticed this tall and muscular yet midget sized dwarf pinching one off on my front door step.

Republic of Macedonia vs. Republic of Ireland?

If anybody is coming I can show u around Skopje and have some beer in the local pubs. And we'll discuss fantasy football of course ;). If there are candidates let me know on this forum we will arrange something.

Hope to see some fantasy football lads.

And I see no reason who Hughes would go there, only up, in terms of spending and club rep. How much is Harry to Chelsea and the gray haired one to Spurs. From my limited knowledge Harry doesn't stay that long at clubs?

If Will's are offering that then its almost a no no. They usually have a contact somewhere. Hughes to Spurs; Harry to Chelsea odds?

            the bookies seem clueless tbh

they often get it wrong with manager markets thats why they always limit the amount u can bet on it

Theres a limit on all online bets, with a max win, even if you picked every team / horse correct. Think Wills has the highest. Read one time a guy won 150,000 from a 50p bet. He didnt even know when they rang. But of just been a clickity click with the last in the account. Anyhow the limit is less for those sorts of bets than say football because of the in house knowledge factor.

what did her bet on with 300,000/1 odds?!

what is the max payout usually then?

What is William Hill Bookies maximum payout?

                  Football bets

                  £1,000,000

                  Horseracing bets

                  £1,00,000

                  Greyhound bets

                  £50,000

                  Sports bets

                  £50,000

                  Special / Novelty bets

                  £25,000

By recollection, the guys 50p eight timer accumulator was due to pay close to 2.2 million, but William Hill's max payout was a million. Thats a pretty good max payout IMO though. When that bloke backed frankies magnificent 7, william hills max payout was only 500,000 but they paid the extra 50,000 as a publicity exercise. The extra 1.2 million that the bloke in yorkshire would have been a little excessive to pay for publicity.

Some wolly's from Virgin got the sack as they were able to check not the total but an average of a line or that. Then opened up a betfair account and lumped on a few grand on a new account. Why oh why didnt they speak to someone sensible.
