Our next Fantasy game review examines an offering that many of us are already familiar with. Metro Fantasy Football was our chosen distraction from the Fantasy Premier League (FPL)- not only did we provide a weekly tips column but we also took it on as our “second game” for the 2010/11 season. The jury is still out on our selected Scout League games right now, but with improvements made throughout, it’s clear that the Metro game deserves plenty of consideration once again.

Once again Fantasy managers can register up to five different teams as they attempt to come top of the pile and claim £7,500 – half of last season’s grand prize, but still not to be sniffed at. Runners-up also get a handsome wedge of cash for their efforts (diminished again, of course) as well as a £1000 return for the ten Managers of the Month over the course of the season.

The Ruleset

The Metro hits us with some familiar rules, with the standard £100m budget to select a squad of 15 players in any of the expected regulation formations, with up to four players from each club allowed to pitch in.

Last season was a bit of a proving ground where some noticeable flaws and gaps were found as the game progressed – fortunately it looks like these have been recognised and addressed. Gameweeks are now already set out after causing confusion last season, while benched players can be automatically subbed on to replace injured and suspended players in the starting XI, much like the FPL – a huge improvement.

It’s the scoring system that provides the real intrigue and is make or break to this game’s appeal. Based on the FSB ruleset – Points are granted for goals, assists and clean sheets as expected, but this is supplemented by involving a whole number of player actions on the pitch based on Opta data.

The noticeable highlights here include 2 point returns for every tackle won, shot blocked, clearance or interception made, while at the other end of the field an effort on target garners 5 more points; every a pass in the final third will also add a single point to player tallies.

The captain’s armband offers double points which can be shifted each week as you see fit, while transfer allowances are unlimited – but at a cost. We get one free transfer a week (plus five bonus trades twice in the season around each transfer window) but can also make additional changes at a cost of 25 points.

In addition to the overall competition and private mini-leagues, the Metro also has a raft of side games for those who like to back their Fantasy selections – betting plays a major role here. Be it joining weekly cash games or playing the Five-a-Side and new Star Player sideshows. The latter is what you would expect – pick five players with the top scoring manager each gameweek claiming a £100 prize. Star Player is perhaps more intriguing, this simple betting format asks you to choose from two player options in opposition, staking £10 in the hope of a return. As an example, you can choose to bet your tenner on either Bobby Zamora or Darren Bent in the opening fixture at Craven Cottage – the Fulham striker offering £20 if he scores more points, Bent a return of £17.

These options may seem overwhelming for the regular Fantasy manager but act as decent distractions once your Fantasy lineup has crossed the white line on matchday.

Player List

The Metro appear to have given their player list plenty of thought this season – there appear to be few exploits on offer and pricing looks well balanced. That’s not to say there aren’t a few apparent bargains on offer from the start.

Keiren Westwood (£1.6m) and Dorus De Vries (£1.7m) look good options in goal should they cement starting roles at their new clubs. Westwood’s back four also looks cheap with Michael Turner (£3.8m), Wes Brown (£4.0m) and Titus Bramble (£3.9m) all available in the budget bracket. There are also some out of position options in defence – Blackburn’s Martin Olsson is a defender once again although Gareth Bale’s wing role is no longer exploitable – he’s classed as a midfielder this season.

He keeps the company of Stephane Sessegnon (£7.1m) and Jamie O’Hara (£7.2m) who both look strong options in the low-mid price bracket, while Junior Hoillett gets a midfield berth in this game too and will be well fancied. Wes Hoolahan (£6.8m) and Nathan Dyer (£6.9m) also look decent bench fodder options from the promoted sides.

Up front Danny Graham (£6.3m) looks equally appealing as a budget option, as does team-mate Scott Sinclair (£6.8m). Once again the likes of Demba Ba (£7.5m) and Bobby Zamora (£7.4m) look tempting in the mid-price bracket.

The Verdict

The Metro have clearly upped their game. The site and interface is slick and more manageable that last year’s effort and major wrinkles have been ironed out – most notably the introduction of auto substitutions. Obviously the prizes aren’t of the gargantuan stakes the Sun Dream Team puts on offer but are still factors when you consider that this is a wholly free to play game.

If you ignored the Metro game last season, you’ll find it a major departure from the FPL game with the Opta based scoring adding depth and variety to the normal goal/assist/clean sheet format. The casual player may find the points tallies more difficult to track however, making this a game that is perhaps more likely to appeal to a hardcore following looking to break away from the standard Fantasy football template.

Something that comes to mind is that Mark is conspicuous by his absence at the moment, so in saying this site won't be affected negatively by the new ties with FPL he already seems to be having is time taken up with "more important" things... Just pointing that out as I've got no FPL to occupy my time 😀

I agree that it looks likely to be a huge technical cock up of some kind. If it isn't and they are just building extra demand by holding this back it is probably having the opposite effect. Hardcore fans are just getting fed up. And if they actually DO know when this will launch or know what is causing the delay some basic communication about it would go down well with those die-hard fans - a group who ought to matter to them if they care about their 'users'. And who they could easily reach through this site.

As it stands it feels like being stuck in a tube tunnel with no info coming over the tannoy. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't REALLY matter. But then most of our day to day lives aren't very grand, and mine certainly follows no schema. Hurry up FPL!

I agree with this and posted along similar lines about Mark & Co yesterday. I may be corrected any moment now but the silence from Scout is a concern and I am sure that without the FPL relationship we would be hearing more, even if it was only Mark saying it is a pain but he knows nothing.

From what Mark has suggested and if that email from the head of online on thurs is true then they did plan to launch by the end of this week. Sounds like a cock up, so sounds like quite a major redesign of the site.

Agree about costing them. It will still attract people, but alot of traffic comes indirectly from us lot. We try and get people to join leagues, they tell people, who tell people etc.

All this delay is annoying their key PR champions - us. That's bad PR. The way to resolve it is to keep the FFS followers, not just the contributors, in the loop.

Otherwise, while we will undoubtedly remain loyal will be as keen to promote it to our friends, and their friends.

Meanwhile Metro, Sun etc wait in the wings.

I've already done my Metro team for the first year....FPL towers need to be reading posts like this and understanding that there is much to be gained from keeping us informed. So what if there's been an IT cock up, just admit it, if that's the case.

Now FFS is part of FPL they should not forget their responsibility to the site's users and if they know something they should tell us.

If this carries on into next week the bad feeling will only get worse.

I think we are all overreacting a bit here. There's still plenty of time to pick your squads ahead of the deadline. Having said that, I agree that the FPL should give us a tad more information about the start date or give us a taste of things to come to wet our appetites. Certain people are getting frustrated around here though...

Sweet Jesus! Isn't it only 4 days past last seasons launch date and still weeks until the season starts?! It doesn't sound like they can give a definate launch date. It's a case of when the sites ready it will be launched.

The point isn't the delay, the point is the lack of information. As you can tell alot of people on here are rather partial to a bit of FPL, but the key to a successful relationship between customer/user and provider is openness.

Last year prior to FFS's relationship with FPL they would have told us if they knew about a launch date. Now its just silence.

Also, yes the new season is far off but a big chunk of the fun of FPL is spending weeks juggling with your team.

If there's a delay so be it, but it has never taken this long before and as I said they need to be open with their key audience.

You must have missed the following post from Mark:

"The game and site have been enhanced and, while things are almost complete, there are still some minor browser issues that need to be ironed out before the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) site can launch.

We can take this opportunity to dispel a number of rumours that have cropped up in recent days and confirm that all is well with the FPL and that the game will be free to play. There are also a number of significant improvements that we feel will be greeted with a very positive response from players and, in particular, our community; having voiced strong opinions on certain features of the game, you have helped influence some of the changes introduced.

We will endeavour to bring you details of those changes and any update on the release date."

This explains why the site is being delayed. They cannot give a launch date because THERE ISN@T ONE YET!

I'm going to request that we publish an update today but, understandably, the FPL are reluctant to name a nailed-on date. The issues are very small and not with the game but with some of the new elements on the site. Believe me, I will keep pushing so that I can keep you all informed.

Agreed, I think much of the frustration is from people endlessly sitting at their PC's hitting refresh.

If a slightly more concrete timescale was announced there would be a lot less moaning as we'd know when to expect it. Leaving it vague and people guessing makes days feel like weeks.

Do they want to address growing frustration from their key users or tow the FPL line and remain silent. Its a tough choice, but people aren't going to become less vocal about this and its something they need to consider.

I'm newish here and don't know Mark or any of the other Scouts but from what I've read he/they seem like decent guys who would, if they could, keep us in the know. I'm sure they are in a tight spot, but if they have signed a silence clause it is essentially saying they are more loyal to FPL than FFS users.

I think FFS should be going to FPL online people saying, look our loyal users are annoyed, can we give them some detail on what the new site will look like and why there's been a delay.

The hysteria is somewhat amusing... I think FPL should do like Apple. Have a product launch at head office.... There would be a mile long queue of FFS followers all eager to log into the one PC and set up their team....

It would be an eclectic mix I'm sure!!!!

lol - I was trying to think of a good analogy myself! We have genuine (virtual) scenes along the lines of when Apple launch a new version of one of their products.

What's amazing is that there are other similar products (the PC equivalent ;-)), but no, nothing else quite matches or surpasses FPL.

This is one of the best parts of the game and the wait is a frustration but here's hoping we get going soon.

You are probaby right, it just highlights there is a slight change in the relationship.

I suppose it won't matter at all when the season starts... and to be honest doesn't matter now either... it's just a bit annoying not being able to play the game.

      This is mental.

Firstly they have not set themselves an official deadline so they can choose to go live whenever they want to, and secondly they don't have any responsibility towards us to launch the game just when the other sites launch their game.

What's the rush about, the Premier League isn't starting in in almost a month?

Also some frustration will come from people (like myself) who try to organise leagues of 20+ people - the less time we have to do so the more frustrating it is.

I'm on holiday in two weeks for two weeks so I don't have long left to organise it, we usually get everyone to chip in a tenner - try doing that on the third gameweek when someone is already 50 points behind and it gets difficult.

These are only my personal issues and of course the FPL designers couldn't care less, but at this time of year plenty of people are going away - the later FPL gets opened the less people they are likely to get playing in favour of the alternative games, that's just a fact of competition. I'm sure they wanted it ready by now but if they've overcomplicated their successful simple design too much it's their own fault really.

You can probably cross Poulsen and Jovanovic off that midfield list, but it's still unbalanced.

Give Kenny a massive scope for versatility, though, and he's shown he's happy to mix up his formation and go 3 at the back, or play with 1 up front.

In terms of fantasy stakes, it may make it very difficult to get the right player for Liverpool. Lots of guys who are capable of big hauls there, including Adam, Gerrard, Downing as well as the obvious ones of Carroll and Suarez. Might have to go with the Uruguayan for a decent chance of a starter each week - Carroll might also be a good option, depending on how Liverpool shape up, and I'm not ruling out Stevie G if he has a good preseason...

Best season ever. Smashed the scummers (including that twitchy satchel faced Judas Redknapp) 4-1, then a couple of weeks later, rolled over at West Brom and watched them go down, finishing BOTTOM! I've still got the West Brom shirt that was swapped for my Pompey one at the end of the match!

Plus some of the home games that Redknapp threw away at the end of that season were hilarious. Villa - 2 up, lost 3-2. Middlesbrough - 2 up in injury time, drew 2-2, Everton, 2-1 up in injury time, drew 2-2. Precious memories!

*settles in with Sky Sports 4 and a nice brew*

Everyone knows FPL is the "premier" fantasy game, so with this in mind the accuracy of their game is paramount.

In order to avoid errors such as making Kompany a midfielder, Coleman a defender, and general over / under valueing of players it makes sense to delay, delay, delay to gather more information.

Also, Mark and Granville absence from this site has quite rughtly been deswcribed as "conspicuous".
Wouldn't it make sense noe for these guys to be testin, testing, testing the game to make sure it all looks right from a players' perspective??

agree, they could have just got a focus group together of FFS users and that could have been done in an afternoon.

This situation is like when the channel tunnel train got stuck. People except that sometimes breakdowns happen, but what really annoyed those on that train was a lack of information and help from staff. They were ill prepared to deal with it.

Deffo. S**t happens. That's not the issue. But how hard would it be to put a banner message up on the 10/11 site just to get folks a sense of how things are happening? It is totally about communication (or lack of it). On one level the folks who say "it will come when it comes" are totally right. But we all know that waiting for something to happen that we can all generally agree is now overdue is made a LOT easier if folk just give a few updates now and then.
