Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek Twenty

Filed under: Suspensions - Posted by: Anorak

The first of the disciplinary elephants was ushered noisily out of the room this week as Liverpool and Luis Suarez accepted both the token fine and lengthy ban as punishment for the Patrice Evra incident. With the other elephant wedged firmly in the corner while the Metropolitan Police continue their investigations into claims against John Terry, we were in danger of a disciplinary void forming amongst this zoo.

Never one to pass up an opportunity though, Joey Barton stepped forward, first with his head in the vicinity of Norwich midfielder Bradley Johnson on Monday, and second with the full force of his Twitter feed in the subsequent days, to whip up a media storm of his own alongside the immediate 3 match ban he will serve. The appeal by QPR having failed, Barton will now be missing for the FA Cup tie in Milton Keynes and fixtures in gameweeks 21 and 22 (new, WIG).

Elsewhere, there were also red cards in the gameweek for Arsenal’s Johan Djourou, booked twice in the defeat at Fulham on Monday, and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry who suffered the same fate in the 3-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday. Both therefore pick up a 1 match ban that will be immediately served in the weekend FA cup fixtures against Leeds and Manchester United respectively, leaving the pair available again for their next league games – away at Swansea for Djourou and at Wigan for the City man.

Finally a note for the yellow cards, and as you may have seen, the Suspension Tightrope widget situated underneath the Watchlist to the right has evolved following the New Year’s amnesty. Instead of showing those sitting nervously on 4 yellows it now helpfully shows those approaching the 10 yellow limit that would now incur a ban. Plenty of familiar names amongst the list, indeed Barton, Barry and Terry all feature fairly prominently, but no one is currently a match for the card magnet supreme of the first half of the season, Blackburn’s Jason Lowe who still leads the way with his 8 yellows, seemingly in a quest to better the tally of 14 (and 1 red) racked up last season’s worst offender, Cheick Tiote.

GAMEWEEK 21 BANS

  • Joey Barton (QPR) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)
  • Luis Suarez (LIV) – Found guilty of racial abuse (first of 8 matches)

    Fratboy - Cahill Reborn says:

    GW21 team:

    Friedel
    Simpson Jones Jags*
    Walters Nani Bale T.Cahill
    RVP Sturridge Adebayor

Hennessey Hoolahan Tierney* Shotton 1 FT 0.0 bank

Was thinking of just doing Cahill>Dempsey next week, seem like the wisest choice?

            Shefki says:

I know, just pointing out the hole in someone’s logic. The real reason Silva didn’t get any bonus points is that he had only one shot & off target. Defoe had 6 shots, 1 on target (obviously) & 5 off target.

Bonus men Toure, Aguero & Milner had 1,2 & 1 shots, respectively, and all on target.
