Scout Reports

Scout Report- Taye Taiwo

Mark Hughes’s first move in the January transfer window has seen QPR snap up Taye Taiwo on loan from AC Milan. The left-back arrives at Loftus Road until the end of the season and looks set to boost the London outfit’s quest for survival over the next few months, bringing a much-needed experience to Rangers’ defence.

Tightening up at the back is a fundamental aspect of Hughes’ approach; last season his Fulham side had the joint-fourth best defence in the league, with just 43 goals conceded, and given that QPR have already shipped 37, it’s an issue that requires immediate address.

With Taiwo having struggled to cement a first-team place for the Serie A champions since his summer move from Marseille, the loan certainly suits both parties. Teaming up with Hughes, then, clearly affords Taiwo the opportunity of regular football and a chance to kick-start his career after the disappointing San Siro experience. It’s an opportunity that the defender clearly relishes:

I’m very grateful to Mark Hughes for bringing me here. It is always nice for a player when you know the manager wants you and I will repay his faith in me. I can’t wait to play for the club. I know only hard work, good performance, dedication, and passion will connect me with the fans but I’m prepared. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead and I’m prepared to give my all to the QPR cause.

The Statistics

After a couple of campaigns as a teenager in his homeland, Taiwo made his name at Marseille, signing for the French side as a twenty year old back in 2004-05. Over seven seasons for the Ligue 1 giants, he made 192 league appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 16 assists- clearly he offers a lot more than your average full-back.

Last term was his most successful at club level; Taiwo returned 4 goals and 6 assists in twenty-nine starts as Didier Deschamps’ side finished second behind Lille in the chase for the title. A Bosman move to Milan has proved a major letdown, though. Taiwo made just 4 league appearances in his debut season for Massimo Allegri’s side, falling behind both Luca Antonini and Gianluca Zambrotta in the pecking order for the left-back role.

Taiwo offers plenty of top-class experience, too, having played more than 50 times in all European competitions, and has represented his country on 48 occasions, finding the net 5 times.

The Prospects

The move certainly seems to spell bad news for both Armand Traore and Clint Hill. Having started twelve and nine times respectively at left-back, the pair look set to take a back seat in light of Taiwo’s arrival. Hughes was clearly delighted to acquire the Nigerian’s services and, from his glowing assessment of the player, it’s obvious that Taiwo looks set to be an integral part of QPR’s first XI from now until May:

I have known of him for a long time and admired him from afar. To get him now is a fantastic coup and a real statement of intent that we can attract the quality of player that he is. I am looking forward to working with him.

Backed by the cash of club owner Tony Fernandes, Hughes has wasted little time in strengthening his defence further; Nedum Onouha has completed a moved from Man City earlier today, as the new manager continues to restructure his back line. With a few days left of the transfer window, there’s still plenty time to wheel and deal and bring a couple more faces to Loftus Road.

So far, Hughes has got off to a decent start; a narrow defeat at Newcastle was followed by a 3-1 home win over Wigan last weekend, as he picked up three points in his first game at Loftus Road. Given QPR had chalked up one victory in front of their own fans under Neil Warnock – a 1-0 triumph over nine-man Chelsea- the omens look good and suggest their Fantasy assets could be set for reassessment in light of the new manager’s arrival.

Renowned for his set-piece ability and shooting from distance (check out the YouTube link below), Taiwo will offer plenty threat going forward, in addition to strengthening the back-four. He’s still not available in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a starting price of around 4.5 to 5.0 looks likely- Clint Hill came in at 4.5 and was the costliest QPR defender prior to the start of the season.

With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon (avl, WOL, bla, FUL, EVE, bol), the London outfit have the strongest schedule of any team over the next six gameweeks. As Hughes looks to engineer a climb away from the drop zone, his new left-back looks to have the perfect opportunity to make an instant impact in his new surroundings.

I got Evans to replace Jones. My other defenders and midfielders are attacking-ish Currently have 4.0 in the bank and will most likely use that on a decent striker. Aguero perhaps...

Pick the option which appeals to you more guys:

    1) Szczesny, Sessegnon & Helguson
    2) Mignolet, McClean & Ba

It's a silly q. as you don't know the other 12, but if it means anything there'll be the same 12 in each option

    Lindergard, Vorm
    Enrique, Evans, BAE, Simpson, Caulker
    Silva, Bale, Sessesgnon, Dempsey, Valencia,
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

Will drop Ba this week and then Dempsey the following week, while I'll be bringing in Richards for BAE and then Jones for Evans as my next 2 transfers.

    Hi guys!

I would like your opinion and advice for any changes to my team after this gameweek. Am considering changing defence, keepers and forwards – dunno which area to prioritise in. I am willing to take a 4 point hit.

    My team:

    Vorm Krul

    Simpson Huth Kompany BAE Evans

    Sess Silva Bale Valencia Dempsey

    RVP Keane Aguero

Thanks for your thoughts/suggestions in advance. Need to gain 100 points on one guy in my league. Got 1.3 in the bank.

Hey, first time poster, but long time lurker 😉

About to play my wildcard, it's quite an agressive transfer window for me. Line up at the moment is...

    Krul (Vorm)
    Kompany / Enrique / R Taylor / (Walker) / (Wilkinson)
    Bale / Dempsey / Walters / BArfa / Sess
    Roooney / RvP (Graham)

Considering the following changes, just for freshness really. Would love to hear your comments 🙂

    Walker > Cahill
Wilkinson > Taiwo (I love a good bandwagon, me)
    Walters > Valencia
    Rooney > Aguero

I agree. With City out of CL, LC and FA Cup they will now fully concentrate on the Premier League with the strong possibility of Silva and Aguero playing every match till May and not being squad rotated. As for their Europa League foray they will almost certainly field a weakened team as their primary focus is the Premier League title

I can't understand how everyone is seemingly able to afford a front 8 of

    Silva / Bale / Dempsey / Valencia / Sessegnon
    RVP / Aguero / Ba

...while still including a City defender and not having complete and utter crap for the rest of their defence. It looks a bit too strong to me, surely a regular bench option would be more sensible?

Of these identikit options, then, who is least important to include? Aguero (expensive)? Valencia (poor fixtures)?

I think Sessegnon is the least important, particularly after this gameweek. He's not scored brilliantly in the tougher fixtures, bar an assist vs City. I'd much rather go for a 5th cheapie in Mid and not use transfers for rotating the attack.

Only because I want to keep Adebayor vs Wigan and get Aguero next week so don't want to waste a transfer on getting Ba back too. There's always the option of going with Adebayor and Aguero but that means downgrading a midfielder which would need a transfer later on.

I'm afraid I still can't understand why so many people are including Lindengaard on their WC. Surely he will inevitably be rotated with de Gea, as he has been all season? I know he's started the last 3 or 4 but de Gea played a whole lot more than that and they were still eventually rotated. Personally, the keeper is the one position I don't want to have to bother with transfers on so I like to be sure that rotation isn't an issue

Looks like he's the first choice keeper now and, lets be honest, if you're Sir Alex and you know you can't afford to slip up again in any more games if you want to retain your title then which keeper would start?

He is also "one for the future", which despite the cliche, is true, I think Lindegaard will hold down the position for the most part.

Sorry for re-posting my message but it is my first season in FFL:(

I wouldnt go for 2 Utd defs with their fixtures, you'll be force to play Smalling in their tough fixtures. Plus rotation risk. I'd probably take Senderos over Brown but will most likely have both. Going for Dzeko myself too.

Early doors but it's important for a new manager to put his stamp on the team as quickly as possible. We have seen McClean flourish under O'Neill who previously never got a look in and I can see the same with Buzsaky. Faurlin out injured and Taarabt at the ACON so he will play.

Is anyone that purchased Adebayor for 8m going to stick with him?

I think it may be too early to write him off and you can always bench him and play 5 midfielders for the tough games.

I might wait until gameweek 26 to sell him (if he shows poor form) anyway.
