Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek Twenty Three
Filed under: Suspensions - Posted by: Anorak
With Newcastle’s decision to appeal the recent FA charge against Yohan Cabaye, the availability of the midfield maestro was not entirely clear. However, the regulatory commission met on Wednesday and confirmed the original decision, handed out for a “kick out” at the Brighton defender Adam El-Abd, resulting in a three match ban that began last night with the Gameweek 23 fixture at Blackburn. Cabaye will now also miss the next two games against Aston Villa at home and Tottenham away.
Also falling foul of the disciplinary panjandrums this week was Chelsea’s ever-present left back, Ashley Cole. Having already been booked just before the interval of Tuesday’s clash with Swansea for a barge into Gylfi Sigurðsson, Cole was dismissed with a second yellow dished out after a scything challenge on Nathan Dyer. The resulting one match ban means he will miss the weekend fixture with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea now forced to field an alternative left-back for the first time in 65 premier league games.
There were a few choice names manoeuvring themselves onto the tightrope radar in midweek, with Cole’s Chelsea team-mate, Raul Meireles, picking up his seventh domestic yellow of a season where Chelsea lead the way for disciplinary points, and Stoke’s Robert Huth adding to his already impressive haul of cautions this season. The Tuesday night card was his twelfth in all competitions, and seventh in domestic play. Trumping them both however, was Blackburn’s Jason Lowe, who despite only committing 16 fouls in the league this season (by contrast, Norwich captain Grant Holt has 54), is the first to accrue nine yellow cards from league and cup. Lowe, Huth and Meireles can now all be found moving up a place on the suspension tightrope widget, while a list of the banned players for the gameweek 24 weekend is below.
GAMEWEEK 24 BANS
- Yakubu (BLA) – 1 Red for serious foul play (last of 3 matches)
- Ashley Cole (CHE) – 1 Red for 2 Yellows (1 match)
- Mario Balotelli (MCI) – FA Charge (third of 4 matches)
- Yohan Cabaye (NEW) – FA Charge (second of 3 matches)
- Karl Henry (WOL) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)
Commenting is now closed for this post.

I’m perfectly happy with Jane, Garg. At this stage I’m kinda past experimenting with Heller, Salinger, Kerouac. I spend more time reading Charlie and Lola with my daughter
February 2 at 8:13 pm
Gargamel says:
I adore Jack Kerouac’s work, being the young rebel that I am and all… I never quite managed to get into Jane Austen’s work in the same way I got dragged into Jane Eyre, for an example of a ‘similar’ book. Which is a shame, because I love Jane Eyre.
What else do you fellas read?
February 2 at 8:28 pm
Retro says:
At the moment, lots of John le Carre. If he’d only written The Spy Who Came in From The Cold, he’d be considered a genius. But because he had the temerity to go on and have a long career writing Spy stories he’s considered to be just a genre writer like your average joe. Fantastic writer.
February 2 at 8:29 pm

February 2 at 8:31 pm
Doosra says:
William Faulkner and Nathaniel Hawthorne …
February 2 at 8:33 pm
Retro says:
Elaborate, Doosra. Style/subject matter?
February 2 at 8:39 pm
Doosra says:
William Faulkner, imo, is quite easily the greatest American Novelist. Wrote about ordinary people in extraordinary and poetic language. Prose style not dissimilar from Virginia Woolf – subject matter completelt other.
Nathaniel Hawthorne – a master of the short story – taut, observant – a predecessor to the Kerouac crowd. Never used two words where one would do. Difficult, though.
February 2 at 9:32 pm
Gargamel says:
Great stuff guys. I’m going to have some le Carre and Hawthorne when I have some spare time, methinks. I’m very attracted to the idea of not using two words where one would do, for reasons I’m a bit unsure of still.
I kind of like the American novelists Doosra, they’re very very, well, ignored over here in comparison to their European counterparts. I’m a bit of a fan of Thoreau myself. Walden is such a strange book and it took me ages to get through but it really is quite something.
February 2 at 9:45 pm
Gargamel says:
Short research on Nathaniel Hawthorne does suggest his stories often have a deeper moral meaning, is that true Doosra? I’m kind of allergic to that.

For whats its worth I think its a good team.
Midfield is fine if you dont mind 2 sund.
If you really have to spend I’d say fletch to cisse/zamora for qpr fixtures.
But I find if I’m happy with my mid I get the most bang per buck from defence (since already have RVP)

Hm. Bosingwa. Get a City defender. If you want a differential, why not Clichy?
