Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek Twenty Eight

Trudging down the disciplinary corridors of power to find their fate this week, like naughty schoolboys destined for the headmaster, are a Jamaican veteran of Premier League spells at Portsmouth, Southampton and more recently Stoke City, and a Swedish international with over one hundred appearances for West Bromwich Albion.

First up is Stoke’s Ricardo Fuller, whose ill timed kick out at Branislav Ivanovic early in Saturday’s loss at Stamford Bridge resulted in a red card from referee Andre Marriner. Having been on the end of a strong challenge from the Serbian, Fuller could legitimately have gone to ground and may even have got a favourable decision, but in the end his rash stamp – labelled “stupid” and “ridiculous” by his manager Tony Pulis – forced a decision the other way and spared Ivanovic any censure of his own. Fuller will now miss the weekend FA Cup tie at Liverpool and Premier League games at Spurs and home to Manchester City. Jonathan Walters is seemingly set to reprise his support striker role with the imminent return of Matthew Etherington to the wing.

Next in line for the carpet, thanks to two yellow cards in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United is West Brom defender Jonas Olsson. Having been booked early in the second half for a foul on goalscorer Wayne Rooney, Olsson was then guilty of a lunge on his strike partner Javier Hernandez in the 66th minute and duly saw the red card produced. Roy Hodgson will now be without his regular centre-back for the trip to Wigan at the weekend, meaning either  a rare start for England U21 defender Craig Dawson, or a reshuffling of Liam Ridgwell into the centre with Nicky Shorey in at left-back.

Finally, taking a seat just outside the headmaster’s office amongst the leafy ferns and sweet perfume of his secretary, is Arsenal’s French international defender, Laurent Koscielny. As we’ve previously reported, there have been some complications with Koscielny’s disciplinary record, thanks mainly to a mis-attributed card in the New Years Eve win over QPR in which centre-back partner, Thomas Vermaelen was reportedly booked, only for the caution to be reassigned to Koscielny a week later. That extra booking made the yellow received in the last gasp Monday night win over Newcastle his ninth, and he will now balance on the tightrope for the next few games hoping to reach the Easter cut off on April 8 without further cautions. After that date the threshold is raised up to 15 bookings.

GAMEWEEK 29 BANS

  • Ricardo Fuller (STO) – 1 Red for violent conduct (second of 3 matches)
  • Lee Cattermole (SUN) – 1 Red for foul and abusive language and 10 Yellows (third of 4 matches)
  • Stéphane Sessègnon (SUN) – 1 Red for violent conduct (last of 3 matches)
  • Nathan Dyer (SWA) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)
  • Jonas Olsson (WBA) – 1 Red for 2 Yellows (1 match)

So, everyone seems fairly happy today!

Now, after rousing themselves to paste a disappointing Everton do we think Liverpool will carry on or go back to sleep and lose 1-0 to QPR?

It was a derby match so i wouldn't take too much from it. Gerrard tends to spring to life in those games. They will probably carry the momentum forward and beat QPR though. Suarez is playing well at the moment.

+1 Gerrard loves a derby match. It will definitely give him a lift and it's probably what he needed after a long injury lay off. But I still think they will have their off days too often.

For the home games, there biggest problem is their failure to turn possession into goals. Apart from the "not-scoring" bit, they actually play good football.

Their away form is pretty woeful

Hi all, feeling vulnerable after a poor'ish performance this week (thanks to no Suarez and Skrtl!) - am ranked just below 7k and am chasing the leader of my mini league is about 15 ahead

    Team at the mo:

    Vorm (Lindy)

    Bardsley, BAE, Enrique (Simpson, Kelly)
    Silva, Siggy, Nani, Bale (Sess)
    RVP, Pogs, Aguero

Have 1 FT, any thoughts on who should i change? Chelski play 3 times in 1 week (champs league tonight, FA cup weekend and Man city next weds) - i feel reluctant derisking the Man city players but at the same time take value hits almost on a daily basis

any help/thoughts would be much appreciated

so ,basicly i should get rooney in and C him??

i'll stick with suarez and Ba

my logic is this-Rooney is on top of form now and he just can not keep scoring goals like crazy

onj the other hand Ba/suarez -very poor form and i hope that both of them would explode while rooney will struggle

i might be wrong but i'll take a gamble this week 😉

Rooney's form has been several seasons in the making, it's no flash in the pan. Ba looks to be losing form, not building it. Suarez' form is mostly prostrate on the deck near the penalty spot...

Dempsey might be in there with a shout for capt. this GW.

Am always expecting Rooney to be substituted in games where Man U go 2 or 3 up and into cruise control, but it doesn't seem to happen. SAF probably worried about getting head-butted by Rooney as he came off, although I believe in his day, SAF would have had him.

Here's a challenge - spot a transfer in this lot, where the player coming in is good enough to make the starting 11 for GW29 but also a good transfer for the next 3-4+ too.

    Krul (Mig)
    Evans Skrtel Kelly
    Dempsey McClean Bale Silva
    Ba Rooney RVP

    Subs: Beausejour Caulker Simpson
    Bank: 3.7

The only one I came close to was:

    if EPL was a classroom:

Arsenal is a boy who works hard through out the year but fails to succeed.

Manchester City is a spoilt child who purchases all the expensive books but is never interested in reading them.

Liverpool is a child who had stopped studying long ago and is very proud of the academic achievements of his grandfather.

Manchester United is a boy who passes all the exams and performs well in the final exams and tops the class.

Finally,Chelsea is a boy who fails and blames his teachers then his family finds a new teacher for him every year.

If I do my planned transfer of Silva to Dempsey my team will look like this. Thoughts.

    Krul(NOR)
    Evans(wol), Skrtel(qpr), Senderos(SWA)
    Dempsey(SWA), Bale(STO), Valencia(wol), Moses(WBA)
    RVP(eve), Rooney(C)(wol), Ba(VC)(NOR)

    Subs: Sorensen, Siggy, Williamson, Kelly

Thoughts on Chelsea v Napoli tonight? Big effort from Chelsea but not enough to go through?

Can't see Napoli not scoring tbh.
