Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Poland

Having previously cast on eye over the prospects of both the Czech Republic and Greece, it’s time to continue the analysis of Group A in our Euro 2012 round-up. Next up, then, we turn our attentions to co-hosts Poland.

Franciszek Smuda’s side get the tournament underway on Friday June 8 with a showdown against Greece at 5pm. Following that, they pit their wits against Russia in Warsaw on June 12 at 7.45pm before facing up to the Czech Republic in their final group game, which takes place four days later on Saturday 16 June at 7.45pm.

With none of the tournament’s big names involved, this is anyone’s group to win. Greece won their qualifying group ahead of favourites Croatia, unbeaten with seven wins from 10 matches. Russia pipped the Republic of Ireland to top spot in their group by a couple of points, while the Czech Republic cruised past Montenegro in the play-off after finishing second to Spain.

The Friendlies

Poland have played nine friendlies since last August in preparation for next month’s big event, with two more – against Macedonia and Turkey – to follow on May 26 and June 2 respectively. Smuda’s men have tasted defeat just the once over those matches, going down 2-0 to Italy; draws against Germany and Portugal are testament to their capabilities, while four of those games ended in victory. Poland picked up four clean sheets, scoring more than one goal four times and conceding more than one on three occasions. After tinkering with the system and trialling several players over those friendlies, Smuda now seems settled on a 4-2-3-1 system as the best way forward.

Most Appearances: Blaszczykowski, Dudka & Mierzejewski (all 8), Brozek, Wawrziniak, Peszko, Wasilewski, Matuszczyk (all 7)

Most Goals: Blaszczykowski (4), Lewandowski (3), Brozek (2)

Most Assists: Lewandowski (2)

The Likely Lads

Poland have a trio of Borussia Dortmund players to boost their bid for home success. Fresh from winning the German league and cup double, Lukasz Piszczek looks the best value from their backline – the right-back comes in at 5.0 in the McDonalds game, the same price as Wojciech Szczesny, though has an ownership of 8.8% in comparison to the keeper’s 18.1%. With four goals and seven assists in a superb Bundesliga campaign, Piszczek offers far more attacking potential than any of his defensive team mates.

Jakub Blaszczykowski also replicates his Dortmund role, playing wide right in a 4-2-3-1; his understanding with Piszczek on the flank will clearly be advantageous to Poland. Priced at 7.5, Blaszczykowski is the priciest of the Poles’ midfield options but the skipper was top scorer in those recent friendlies and, in addition to taking his fair share of free-kicks and corners, also stepped up for both penalties awarded over those nine games. The only question mark here is that Robert Lewandowski was subbed off before Blaszczykowski netted from the spot against Germany, while the latter missed a spot-kick against Italy after Lewandowski received lengthy treatment for the foul leading up to the award.

Robert Lewandowski heads into the tournament on the back of a sensational domestic season. The forward grabbed 22 goals and eight assists for Jürgen Klopp’s all-conquering Dortmund and finished the campaign by firing a hat-trick in the 5-2 German Cup Final win over Bayern Munich. Lewandowski managed six appearances over the afore-mentioned friendlies and demonstrated just how crucial he is likely to be, with three goals and a couple of assists. Priced at 8.0, he carries the hopes of the hosts on his shoulders more than any other Poland player.

Cheeky Punt

French-born centre-half Damien Perquis was one of the stand-out stars in the recent goalless draw with Portugal, receiving plenty plaudits for his assured display at the back. Plying his trade for Ligue 1 side Sochaux, Perquis has fully recovered from a recent elbow injury to take his place in the provisional squad named by Smuda in the early stages of this month. Priced at 4.5 and with a 0.4% ownership, he offers a cut-price route into the co-hosts’ defence, for those Fantasy managers looking for a budget option.

Voted the best player in the Polish Ekstraklasa in the 2010/11 season, the creative endeavours of Adrian Mierzejewski helped clinch the midfielder a move to Trabzonspor in the campaign gone by. Priced at 7.0, he’s likely to play on the left of the midfield three and shares corner kicks with Blaszczykowski, in addition to taking his share of free-kicks. Mierzejewski looks a nailed-on starter, taking part in all but one of Poland’s nine friendlies – the only absence was due to Smuda’s decision to field a Polish-based XI for the clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina back in December.

Lads here's my provisional squad. Will be using the manager's substitutions to change players and captain if needed as the gameweek progresses. Not sure yet on injuries, squads etc so no doubt will make a few changes before kickoff.

Any advice from the wise folk of FF land?

Cech, Papadopoulos, Jodłowiec, Zhirkov, Kroos,Sneijder,Srna, Plašil (C), van Persie,Jelavić,Müller

    Sørensen, Abate, Ribéry, M. Olsson.

Kroos is going to most likely be a sub, Abate did not appear in many of the qualifying games, Jelavic has not been a starter with the 5 or so strikers they have.

        Cheers Gurka.

I'm confident that Jelavic will start. Didn't sign for Everton and hit the heights until after the playoffs. Himself and Olic up front. At 5m he's worth a gamble.

Abate is less certain. Just two caps. But Italy have a mix of not fully fit and uncapped players so could start. Plus he's a Milan player, likes to get forward, good crosser and 5m is a good price for an Italian defender, won't concede too much. Useless if he doesn't play of course!

Kroos is least likely to start of the 3 alright but is a player in good form, could get on as a sub. Played in 8 of their qualifiers. Closer to the day might swap him for Stevie G who should start behind Carroll.

Keeping a close eye on Ox, Cahill,Shirokov, Yarmalenko, Balotelli and loads more. There'll be some unheard of players fron Poland, Ukraine, Sweden and Denmark that are bound to shime. Hopefully a few Irish too. Robbie Keane for 7m is good value. Has scored at every international level bar the Euros.

Hopefully they'll update the squads soon on the site. Plenty of time for me to make stupid decisions!

Abate is highly unlikely to play. He's behind Christian Maggio in the pecking order. He's backup right back.

Doosra thinks Bonucci, but Barzagli is CB partner to Chiellini at Juventus AHEAD of Bonucci. No reason to think that won't be the same for Italy.

You put me right off the Italian defender plan now! Considering Croatia and Spain are more than decent and we've been good against Italy recently, friendlies included, Italy will leak goals they will. Stuck Phil Jones in but he's a tad injury prone and Gerrard for Kroos but he's similarly afflicted.

Lose Abate, Ribery and Sorensen right off the bat.

Abate won't play, Ribery is overpriced and plays on the last day, and Sorensen is likewise overpriced considering you can get more value at goalie.

Ribery is the man in form, I know he's pricey. After England France should do well, but I hear you. Will shop around and wait til closer to kickoff. Stevie G methinks but the man has more wounds than a small hospital.

Just changed Sorensen for Shay. Croatia is the game we have to go for a win in, but unlikely. Shay won't concede a shedload though. I know Sorensen is a class keeper but put him there in a hurry. Against Holland, Germany and Portugal he might conceded a few!

        He's a defensive midfielder for 6.0...

Get Cabaye at 6.5 or Mandzukic.....

Hi, what is the best way to handle substitutes?
Should you fill your team with players who play in the earlier games in the gameweek and then sub them out if they don't score well, or is it best to leave it for the computer to do automatically?

Di Matteo has turned Chelsea into a champions league Stoke.

How true!!! I couldn't agree more, but I doubt they will park the bus today.

I have a bad feeling that this is gonna be a boring low scoring finale even though both teams have lost a good set of defensive players. Hopefully I couldn't be more wrong.

They'll definitely park the bus today. Missing half their team, against one of the best passing teams in the world, they'll have less than 40% possession the whole match. It'll be dour unless Bayern score early.

Course I'm a Rovers fan. Sadly, more like, considering our plight, but yeah. I love the feeling of being neutral going into the Euros. I love international football for precisely that reason. I guess I like the flashy teams (rooted for Germany 2010) and I do have a soft spot for the Dutch too. We'll see!

It will be about 2 months til the start of next season.. So, I've decided to join my work mini-league of Euro 2012. I found it's much difficult to pick players and also different rules of substitution and scoring. Can anyone help to see if my understanding is right about the substitution please?

Barring sent off and the complete of matchday.

    1. At the end of each day, I will be able to replace a player who played and got low point with the player who is yet to play from my bench and hope for better point.

    2. I will also be able to change my captain in the same way too.. And hope for better point.

    3. Unlimited number of manager substitutions can be made without any point hit.

    4. No auto-sub if I did manager sub.

    Umm.. Are these understanding correct?

Hey guys! I'm new here so I'm not really sure where to comment. Sorry if it's in the wrong section or anything 🙂
I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on my team.
I had Abate but apparently he's not a guarenteed a start so I've downgraded to Papa and upgraded Evra for Boateng. Is there anything else that needs some fixing? Thanks 🙂

    Cech
    Papadopoulos - Terry - Boateng
    Iniesta - Rosický - Modrić - Götze
van Persie - Lewandowski - Cristiano Ronaldo
BENCH: Lindegaard, Polański - M. Olsson - Strinić

      Lindegaard won't start.
      Not sure about Götze.
      Ronaldo too expensive for me.
      Don't know about Strinić.

        Thanks for the response 🙂
Tzoras for Lindergaard? or make way for Given..?
Götze is my real differential pick, better and safer alternatives?
Ronaldo seems like a lock for me though, who else is in good contention for replacement? Gomez..?
Strinić is just a fill in player, why no love for him? 🙂

Try to make space for Given.
Demi (the god of line-ups on this site) reckons Gotze won't start.

Welcome to the site Hitman. (Promise not to kill me if the advice is wrong?).

Your bench should be players with later game days so you can transfer them in if your early day players get low scores. Is Polanski going to play? Or have you just got him because he's £4mil?

Do you know you have a wildcard to use during the group stages?

Hahaha, thanks for the responses guys! 🙂
I played FPL and finished in the top 100k for my first season so I know what I'm doing. Is there anything majorly different between the two? This seems like CS's are more likely..?
Back to the topic, I just have them because they are cheapies. I have no real knowledge on international football such as the random 4.0-5.0m players. If you could help me form a solid team I'd be very appreciative. Thanks! 🙂

Read the team articles on here, Sir Paulos is doing most I think. They will give you far more insight and info than I have.

Like you I know little of European players unless they play here.

Yeah, fair enough. That means I'll have to wait untill all the team articles are released to have a solid team then which is kind of a bummer 🙁
Anyway, what was it that you said about subbing players on who are playing at different times...?

    Sorry for this Long post:

1 – As the teams walk out onto the Allianz Arena pitch past the Champions League trophy, glinting majestically on its pedestal, Didier Drogba's arm brushes against one of its giant handles. The Chelsea striker immediately falls to the ground, writhing in pain and demanding that the trophy be sent off, with kick-off delayed by five minutes until he finally gets to his feet.

2 – Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is spotted in the stands draped head-to-toe in Bayern Munich apparel, including replica shirt, branded hat and scarf, muttering: "Triffic, always liked 'im", as each home player's name is read out over the public address.

3 – By the time that the game kicks off, ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley has already mentioned Manchester United's famous 1999 final victory over Bayern 28 times.

    – John Terry begins the match sitting quietly to one side while Roberto Di Matteo occupies his usual role on the touchline overseeing the team. As the first half progresses, however, the two slowly swap positions until the Blues captain is barking orders gleefully and the Italian is unobtrusive and obsolete on the bench.

5 – A cursor is visible above the head of David Luiz as the Brazilian's positional error allows Mario Gomez through to make it 1-0 to Bayern. In the Sky studio, someone wrestles a video-game controller out of co-commentator Gary Neville's hand.

6 – When Luiz is forced off with a recurrence of his injury, Franck Ribery dons a stereotypical French beret and drags lazily on a cigarette as he strolls with insulting ease past Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa on the right-hand side of the Chelsea defence to score two goals.

7 – With the Blues 3-0 down at half-time, reports emerge that Roman Abramovich has offered Rafael Benitez £1 million to take over as manager for the second half. The Spaniard doesn't answer the call in time, however, as he is too busy leaving a message on the Chelsea owner's voicemail talking up his CV.

8 – With Bayern pressing relentlessly for more in front of a baying home crowd, Terry is caught by the fourth official warming up with his side's substitutes wearing a bushy false moustache and glasses. He is banished to the stands.

9 – Juan Mata kicks the ball harmlessly out of play for a throw-in on the halfway line when a German player goes down injured. Martin Atkinson, who was drafted in as a half-time replacement referee after Pedro Proenca is taken ill, awards a goal for Chelsea. Twitter crashes.

10 – Fernando Torres comes on as a substitute and immediately embarks on a thrilling run, dribbling past four defenders and rounding the keeper before shanking wide from three yards. One minute later, Drogba stops clutching his leg and wailing for an amputation just long enough to shove Jerome Boateng out of the way and blast home. In celebration, the Ivorian retrieves a multi-billion-dollar Shanghai Shenhua contract from his sock and signs it.

11 – The game moves into injury time, with Tyldesley now almost incomprehensible in his shrieking about "that night in Barcelona" and "what odds?".

12 – As the final whistle goes and Bayern win 3-2, Geoff Shreeves scampers towards Di Matteo to confirm that the Blues will definitely not be playing Champions League football next season, but is stopped in his tracks by Branislav Ivanovic, who knows Shreeves' intentions all too well and sends him flying with a slide tackle from behind.

13 – Chelsea walk up the steps to receive their runners-up medals. There is a slight delay as Michel Platini wearily explains to a confused Terry that he's not allowed to lift the trophy.

14 – Arjen Robben and Ribery's tetchy working relationship comes to a head as both wingers scramble to be the first to get their hands on the trophy. Before either gets a touch of it, a scuffle breaks out, leaving captain Philipp Lahm to ignore them and lift it himself.

15 – While the hosts celebrate, Di Matteo is caught on camera answering his phone, mouthing: "Yeah, I know," and walking off the pitch, staring at his shoes.

    Alreet lads

More musings on tactics for the euro game. Clearly we should have a strong captain choice that plays on each day. But for the rest of the players, how important is it to have them split between the different days. For example my first draft ended up with 4 defenders and a keeper that all play on the first day. I'm not sure if I need to change it, just because they all play on the same day. After all, I chose them because I thought they have the best points scoring potential (for the price). Of course, I would put them all in the first 11, and then change out the worst performing one. I don't want german, italian, english or spanish defenders for the first game as they are all likely to concede. I plan to WC after the first game. Am I missing something?

      Morning!

I think the most important thing to remember regarding this is just to not have too many players for Day 4 as you obviously cant sub them out if they get 2 pointers etc, so no more than 3 for the last day seems to be the consensus on here.

After reading the article on tpl, is GW3 a viable alternative to GW2 for the WC? It might be worth dumping players from teams who have already secured top spot in their group, and loading up on players who have it still all to play for.

But most on here have been advocating doing it after the first game. For the following reasons (feel free to add)
        1) Remove any doubts to starting 11
        2) Can set up a team for one match
        3) Lots of big teams have their hardest game first up. Ignore them first up, then wildcard them in after the first game
        4) Make money

All 4 teams in Group A don't score many goals. I think there will be a fair few clean sheets. I could swop Krancjar for Mandžukić and that would give me an extra 1.5 to play around with. If I take Alba out, then I could use the 1.5 to bring in Terry.
