It’s come to our attention that since we published our previous guide to the McDonald’s game, there has been an important tweak to the assist rule that is beneficial to Fantasy managers.

Beforehand, the game had simply replicated the rule of the Champions League format, also run by Uefa. Assists were not awarded for shots that rebounded off the woodwork or opposition goalkeeper, neither were they granted if the goalscorer had to beat an opponent before scoring, as stated below:

An assist is awarded when the goalscorer receives the ball directly from a team-mate (including the goalkeeper) and scores without having to take the ball past an opponent. If the assist pass takes a small deflection which does not change the direction of the ball, it will still be given. No assists are awarded for own goals or penalties. Live assists are provisional and will be reviewed within 24 hours of the match.

Now, however, they’ve made it a little more straightforward for us. Ahead of Friday’s kick-off, the addition of a few handy alterations should consequently lead to higher scoring rounds across the board.

It’s refreshing to see that rebounds will now count – this seemed an obvious flaw and brings the rule system more in line with most Fantasy games. A player now also receives assist points if he makes the final pass prior to the ball finishing in the back of the net, regardless of whether the scorer needed to beat an opponent – again this is a positive step.

Although players will not be awarded assist points for converted penalties or free-kicks, if a player is brought down in the box and his side are subsequently awarded a spot-kick, he will still receive an extra point, regardless of whether the ball finishes in the back of the net or not.

A player will be credited with a “goal assist” when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.).
An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.
When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker.
Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored.
No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick.
No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

Hopefully this will be the one and only rule change to the game prior and during the tournament. However, those long in the tooth may remember that this wasn’t quite the case during the FIFA World Cup. We’ll stay on the look out for any further subtle changes and alert you should any arise.

Gaz Downright, Gerente dos Navegadores says:

Despite you being a Gooner, I will try to answer this seriously.

Downing is a defensive winger these days. If he is selected, it will be because Hogdson wants him to sit back and defend the flank, and provide the occasional cross.

His crosses will go to Andy Carroll. Those two havent set the world alight this season.

Also, when he was a good fantasy option (for Boro), it was largely down to him hogging absolutely all corners, freekicks and penos.

I’ve been away and haven’t looked or updated the team. Currently, I have M. Olsson, Abate, Foley, Strinic and Walker. I read news about Foley and Walker being out and Abate is a doubt to start.

Can somebody recommend me any good replacements for these players based on form and fixtures?

my forwards for GW1 are Ibra, Lewandowski and Benzema. Think that is pretty good.

My Friendly World Cup team mate has RvP so he’s out, so essentially it’s a German forward and I have Ozil.

Fair enough. I’d stick with those guys, especially if it complements your partner. Although I think there’s too much emphasis on making teams without overlap.

If RVP scores, you’re much better off having two of them between you!

I may get RvP as well, and keep 1.5 in the bank.

That way I can either go Ibra to Benzema/Torres or RvP to Ronaldo.

                How does this look

                Chalkis, Given

                Anyukov, Alba, Lescott, Strinic, Pizszcek

                Sniejder, Ozil, Perisic, Shiokov, Konoplyanka

                Ibra, Lewandowski, RvP

I don’t see the worth in Andrews even a 4, if Ireland do something from an attacking perspective, McGeady or Keane will be involved. If I get Andrews I’d be more inclined to get Ignashevic over Berutisky.

          Camzy says:

Andrews for me is the best choice of any midfielder sub 6.0.

It’s really slim pickings down there, and he’s not only super cheap, but a guaranteed starter and gets recovered balls points.

You can’t do much better. Think about it. 3 games. How many goals/assists do you really think there’ll be from the likes of McGeady or Perisic. I’d much rather have the guaranteed returns on Andrews and then use the cash to invest in players who are much more likely to get significant returns.

Van Marwijk press conference just now:

Some rather rapid developments on that Mathijsen news, with Bert van Marwijk admitting that he may have to call up a replacement in the defender’s place.

“There’s still a chance that Joris will recover in time for the match against Germany,” he said.

“He’s not going to make Saturday’s game, though. I can basically rule that out. Mathijsen needs more time to recover than we were hoping for. We will decide in the next two days whether he stays with the group, or whether we will call up a replacement.”
