Scout Report – Yassine El Ghanassy

Having snapped up Ben Foster on a permanent deal earlier this month, Steve Clarke’s second move into the summer transfer market has brought Belgian midfielder Yassine El Ghanassy to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old arrives from Belgian outfit AA Gent with the Baggies afforded the option of making the deal permanent in the 2013/14 campaign…

A versatile player, El Ghanassy can play on either flank and also has the ability to be fielded up front – a factor which should be beneficial to his game time in the upcoming campaign and one that presents an intriguing option to Fantasy managers. The club’s sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth revealed El Ghanassy has been on the radar for a while now and was full of praise for the style of play that the new boy will bring to the Baggies:

“Yassine is a player we have watched develop for a couple of years. He has shown in Belgium his ability to put defenders on the back foot and create and score goals and he is on the fringes of the national team. He is an exciting, young player who we hope will grow into the league and prove a real asset. He offers us a different option and is the type of player I am sure our supporters will warm to and get right behind.”

The Statistics

El Ghanassy was picked up by La Louvière in his native country and made his way through their youth system before being handed a first-team debut in 2008 at the age of 18. He made just six league appearances for the club, though, before making his way to Gent. His first season in the Belgian top division consisted of a handful of games but the departure of Bryan Ruiz in the summer of 2009 allowed El Ghanassy to nail down a regular first-team role.

In his second full season for Gent, the youngster demonstrated the potential that saw the likes of Man City and AC Milan cast an eye over his possible acquisition, with 12 assists and six goals from 30 league appearances helping his side to the title. El Ghanassy is mainly renowned for his creativity and looking at the stats, it’s clear to see why – in total, he played 90 times for his former club, returning 10 goals and 22 assists before the Baggies came calling this summer.

The Prospects

West Brom were hardly prolific last time round – a total of 45 goals scored was worse than two of the relegated sides (Bolton and Blackburn) and indicative of their struggles going forward under Roy Hodgson. Bearing in mind that this is Clarke’s first stint in the managerial hotseat, the jury may be out on the Baggies potential for the season ahead, though the new boss has already hinted at a more attacking approach, particularly at the Hawthorns.

While this could prompt us to reassess the likes of Peter Odemwingie after the Nigerian’s poor previous campaign, Clarke has admitted he may take his time to integrate El Ghanassy into the first-team, suggesting it’s perhaps a better bet to hold fire for just now and assess the midfielder’s potential game time. At 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and only 4.7 in the Sky Sports game, though, he looks an intriguing proposition and, if fielded up front, would offer us an out-of-position prospect too, given that both games classify El Ghanassy as a midfielder.

“He is an exciting prospect who will add something different to our squad. We believe he has got the raw talent to make an impact here. This is a big move for Yassine. We’ll have to be patient with him as he settles into a new country and gets to grips with the demands of the Premier League.”

Clarke’s opening couple of fixtures – home to Liverpool and away at Spurs – suggests he may keep with those players more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League before unleashing El Ghanassy in a starting role. With home clashes against (EVE, RDG, QPR) in the following five Gameweeks, the young Belgian could well be one to watch if his manager affords him the game time his talent deserves.

My team changes about 5 times a day, and at the end of every day i seem sure that this is the one i'll end up using(barring transfer market activity). Is anyone else as obsessed?

Too much on defense for my liking. You'll need to bench two every week. Everything else is pretty good, although Chelsea double gameweek first up could leave you pretty far behind right from the get go.

But it makes more of a difference than the middle or end. Because a good start will give you a leg up in value which will help you for the rest of the season.

The TottenhamFC message boards seem to agree VDV will partner Parker, with Siggy in the hole behind the striker. This would boost both Siggy's and Lennon's chances, and weaken VDVs.

Judging by the replies here I would say that Gareth and Siggy seem to be the obvious Spurs MIDs with VDV compromised by a deeper role and the jury is out on Lennon until the season kicks off. Based on this it's Gareth for me - at the moment!

Mixed thoughts now on goalies. Usually it's not hard for me to pick, but this year it's doing my head in a little.

    Jaask, Federici/Stoke keeper
    Cole, Lescott, Hutton, Mariappa, McCartney
    Hazard, Bale, Valencia, Taarabt, Noble
    Aguero, Torres, Pogrebnyak

Would probably go with the Stoke keeper if we knew who it was. Bit worried about McCartney, but figure his prem experience will see him start.

Midfield is downgradable. Hazard > Lampard, Bale > Siggy/VdV easy moves. Probably going to lose Hazard and Torres in a double swap GW 3.

    De Gea, Jaask,

It seems to be the standard shape. I have gone for the 3 big hitters up front sacrificing a midfielder i.e. Torres instead of Silva. I just see the 3rd striker scoring more than the 2nd midfielder (if that makes sense).

          We're a nation of nearly 320 million.

We could ban cars or alcohol as well, as they cause even more deaths.

tens of thousands???!!! I would love to see where you got that figure from. Simply America has a lot higher population than Britain and therefore you are a lot more likely to see more explosive terrible crimes in America than Britain. Gun ownership really has little to do with it.

You can kill lots of people in a short space of time with a gun, of course gun ownership has plenty to do with it.

Maybe no more head line atrocities but gun crime has no decreased. It just meant law abiding citizens couldn't involve themselves in the sport of their choice.

Very simplistic view for such a complicated discussion. It can happen in any country (Scotland, Dunblane).

Simple conclusion is unfortunately there are some very messed up people who will commit extreme crimes. Banning guns solves very little.....Right onto the serious business of FPL

It's a simplistic view because if the standard on whether to do something is security alone, then the government should place us all on house arrest with no guns.

We have a fundamental disagreement, Us Americans and folks from elsewhere ... we (in theory, at least, and I admit it doesn't always bear out ... ) would rather freedom than regulation ... even if that freedom brings risk with it.

It's the same as drugs. Banning them has done nothing and their use has increased not decreased. The problem is far from simple.

Killing lots of people in self-defense?

Before the ball gets rolling, here in the States, I'm a bleeding heart liberal who would like greater gun regulation - so we're sympatico there.

But banning weapons entirely? No thankee.

The majority of gun deaths in the US involve family members or friends / acquaintences, not gangs or zombies 😉

Many do, not sure about 'majority', but whatevs ...

It's a serious issue: yes, guns are incredibly dangerous and can cause immense havoc ... and reasonably limiting who can own what is logical, to me.

But guns are also indelibly ingrained in American culture: sport, hunting, and self-defense. Ultimately, we perceive gun ownership as a core right in order to allow people to defend their own rights, life, and property. The risk of mayhem is simply worth the freedom/protection.

Certainly -- I never expected to persuade or convince anyone. 🙂

The question of gun legality was brought up and I was just trying to explain the American logic behind it.

I agree with much of what you say, especially with assault weapons and such.

Certainly when events like yesterday's occur ... it makes one's blood run cold, though. Shame for those people and their families.

Banning weapons does not reduce weapon related crime. People shoot for sport (Olympics) and for fun (clay pigeon shooting etc.). I spent a lot of my childhood shooting at tin cans with an air rifle and more powerful guns. I don't shoot now... something taken from me.
