Scout Report – Yassine El Ghanassy

Having snapped up Ben Foster on a permanent deal earlier this month, Steve Clarke’s second move into the summer transfer market has brought Belgian midfielder Yassine El Ghanassy to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old arrives from Belgian outfit AA Gent with the Baggies afforded the option of making the deal permanent in the 2013/14 campaign…

A versatile player, El Ghanassy can play on either flank and also has the ability to be fielded up front – a factor which should be beneficial to his game time in the upcoming campaign and one that presents an intriguing option to Fantasy managers. The club’s sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth revealed El Ghanassy has been on the radar for a while now and was full of praise for the style of play that the new boy will bring to the Baggies:

“Yassine is a player we have watched develop for a couple of years. He has shown in Belgium his ability to put defenders on the back foot and create and score goals and he is on the fringes of the national team. He is an exciting, young player who we hope will grow into the league and prove a real asset. He offers us a different option and is the type of player I am sure our supporters will warm to and get right behind.”

The Statistics

El Ghanassy was picked up by La Louvière in his native country and made his way through their youth system before being handed a first-team debut in 2008 at the age of 18. He made just six league appearances for the club, though, before making his way to Gent. His first season in the Belgian top division consisted of a handful of games but the departure of Bryan Ruiz in the summer of 2009 allowed El Ghanassy to nail down a regular first-team role.

In his second full season for Gent, the youngster demonstrated the potential that saw the likes of Man City and AC Milan cast an eye over his possible acquisition, with 12 assists and six goals from 30 league appearances helping his side to the title. El Ghanassy is mainly renowned for his creativity and looking at the stats, it’s clear to see why – in total, he played 90 times for his former club, returning 10 goals and 22 assists before the Baggies came calling this summer.

The Prospects

West Brom were hardly prolific last time round – a total of 45 goals scored was worse than two of the relegated sides (Bolton and Blackburn) and indicative of their struggles going forward under Roy Hodgson. Bearing in mind that this is Clarke’s first stint in the managerial hotseat, the jury may be out on the Baggies potential for the season ahead, though the new boss has already hinted at a more attacking approach, particularly at the Hawthorns.

While this could prompt us to reassess the likes of Peter Odemwingie after the Nigerian’s poor previous campaign, Clarke has admitted he may take his time to integrate El Ghanassy into the first-team, suggesting it’s perhaps a better bet to hold fire for just now and assess the midfielder’s potential game time. At 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and only 4.7 in the Sky Sports game, though, he looks an intriguing proposition and, if fielded up front, would offer us an out-of-position prospect too, given that both games classify El Ghanassy as a midfielder.

“He is an exciting prospect who will add something different to our squad. We believe he has got the raw talent to make an impact here. This is a big move for Yassine. We’ll have to be patient with him as he settles into a new country and gets to grips with the demands of the Premier League.”

Clarke’s opening couple of fixtures – home to Liverpool and away at Spurs – suggests he may keep with those players more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League before unleashing El Ghanassy in a starting role. With home clashes against (EVE, RDG, QPR) in the following five Gameweeks, the young Belgian could well be one to watch if his manager affords him the game time his talent deserves.

Haha I will never get over that. 1,533 finish softed the blow mind you.

Lambert could be a hit in the PL but with Swansea's great set of fixtures and Graham having a solid first PL season he is the smart choice.

does everyone think DDG nailed on all season? i feel fergie tends to rotate keepers around UCL games and with lindy he will be more than confident of doing this. on this basis i will go for rotating cheapies, prob 4.5/5.0!

Not nailed on but that is why you need a 4.5mil sub not just a 4mil bench warmer. In reality he is the same value as Cech and 0.5mil less than Hart as both of them are nailed on.

If they sign any strikers, it might cause the fragile and burgeoning confidence of that delicate flower called Torres to wilt and fade.

And then the coach would have to be fired ...

Why is there no love for Dembele. An attacking player with OOP potential. If Dempsey moves the team might be set around him. Nailed on to start. Decent team. Cheap. Can score. Should score/assist more. Low ownership. Decent fixtures.

I'm not saying that he is a standout better prospect than Tarrabt/Lallanna but nobody seems to rate him and what does Pianeer (apart from a good spell of form last year) have over Dembele?

He is a modric type player. Assists the assist. Would you have modric? No. Pienaar can assist/score consistently. If Dempsey leaves why would Dembele play OOP? His position is CM and fulham have other players than can play Dempsey's role eg. Frei, Ruiz, Kasami, Rodallega. If you're gonna take a punt go for Frei and use the 1.5 elsewhere.

Moses and Sturridge the British bench warmers. I know there are plenty games but you fear you would only see Moses in the Carling Cup. Look what happened to Lukaku last season. The poor lad must have been wondering what was going on.

Yep. Moses and Marin as back-ups on the wings. Wonder what Sturridge will do if Hulk (or an additional winger/striker) does arrive. Wouldnt be bothered if he left personally, the kid has shown that he deserves to play regularly as a CF.

Yeah he did look very bulky and immobile. Just assumed Chelsea would have been a bit more aware of that if you're shelling out £13 for an 18 year old. He really was frozen out the team which can kill a players confidence. He would need a good run of games to determine how suited he is to the PL. Physically he is perfect and maybe a run of games would sharpen him up.

Yeah it was almost scary to see how "off pace" he was, remember I almost had to blink twice to believe this was the player I had seen nicking them in for Anderlecht and Belgium the year before. He has the abilities to become the next Drog - lets hope he blossoms this season.

Yeah Sturridge was absolute class for Bolton and excelled in the central role. He is a bit of an ego and he needs to be the focal point to thrive and express himself. He needs a loan move if not a new club altogether.

He really did, and deserves the chance. Problem is I dont see him as a regular starter for us in the nearest future - doesnt really suit our style of play - especially with the new arrivals coming in. A club like WBA could really use his talents.

Yep he could be a bargain at that sort of club - still think his price is a bit stiff, especially as FPL know he will play second string - at best. Maybe they know something we dont 😉

    Ok guys

    1) If you're looking for a cheap defender Clyne is an absolute steal at 4.0, being a palace fan i know what he can do and i think he will be the surprise of the season even if southampton don't keep many CS as he has goalscoring potential (IMO he is a 2.5 cheaper Cashley).

    2) Is Jussi and Begovic a safe goalkeeper double?

Good luck for the season and look after Aaron Martin!

I LOVE the teams full of mediocre players China Mag was talking about on the previous page. Its a tactic I naturally lean towards. Check out the mrs's team

    Schwarzer Mignolet

    Kaboul Rafael Koscielny Hangeland Clichy

    BenArfa Pienaar Sinclair Walters McClean

    Suarez Cisse(NU) Adebayor

so tempting to employ this strategy myself. So many decisions to make on deadline day!

Here's something to debate... price vs value.

The FPL incorrectly stated that players were valued at a current amount. What FFS have also incorrectly said is value.

We don't know their value until they have played a few games and we can work out their price vs performance. That helps us equate their value.

As things stand for example. Ashley Cole is PRICED at 6.5 - his value IS NOT 6.5

    Discuss... 🙂

Value is also got from previous performances. That is what we are all going by. In some instances we have little info but it's still the same thing.

Also, Adebayor is not worth 9.5 as a city player - as a Spurs player, yes, but not as a city player.

I think you're right, and priced would be a better term, but they have assigned them a 'value' based on prior performance and expected future performance which may or may not be correct

Like I say they have themselves a different value dropdown, so they themselves rank players on both.

So why do FPL have their own Value drop down box when you look on the transfer list? And it's different to their 'value' price?

It's because even themselves agree that they are priced in - they're not valued in.

Value doesn't always consist of a pounds and pence. In fact value consists moreso of figures - the figures don't relate to anything else, just their own unique figure.

I assume the Value (form) item is based on points per £ over the last 5 games? I have no idea what Value (season) may indicate unless it is a season long version of the "form" value (seems logical).

Value is more of an esoteric concept to me... having a cheapie may allow a better performing player elsewhere and that malarky.

No... that's the whole bloody point!

If you don't understand the difference then you don't understand the difference between what a player is priced at and what his value is based on things such as price, fixtures, form, chance of starting etc.

The value of a given player will be different from person to person - as other commodities in World Markets.

The point you make is valid as is they should state price, however they have also placed a quantitative value per player as the starting price based on the players qualities.
