The Suspension Tightrope – Quiet

Filed under: Suspensions - Posted by: Anorak

With no red cards shown in the fixtures this week, we’d a sparse looking inbox in terms of suspensions, but never fear – there are still some tidbits to throw your way, as the tightrope continues to creak under a heavy load.

Easing that load on Saturday, and perhaps the highest profile of those newly banned for next weekend, Chris Baird is the first to take our interest. Booked for protesting the injury time penalty award for Arsenal at the Emirates, the Northern Irishman had his pain immediately eased by the outstanding glovework of his goalkeeper but a ban still follows; he’ll be absent for the visit of Sunderland next Sunday, with Mahamadou Diarra the obvious replacement should he regain his fitness.

Also doing their bit to free up space on the sidebar widget were Stoke City’s Dean Whitehead and Sunderland’s Craig Gardner, both falling foul of the referee for the fifth time this season in their respective second halves against QPR and Everton. While Gardner will now accompany Baird in the stands at Craven Cottage, Whitehead will be missing a tricky trip to the Boleyn Ground, as the Potters face an in-form West Ham.

Replacing those three unbalanced folk up on the high wire this week we have a former Galactico in the shape of Esteban Granero, and a man capped by France at every age group level (though with the notable exception of the seniors) in Morgan Schneiderlin. Grabbing Southampton’s goal in a 1-1 draw with Swansea which lifted his side off the foot of the table, Schneiderlin also picked up his fourth yellow for unsporting behaviour. The Saints were replaced at the bottom by the QPR side of ‘El Pirata’ Granero, who picked up his censure in the final throws of their latest defeat.

Finally in our round up, it’s the old timers, with Cheick Tioté completing his three-match ban this week to be available for the Gameweek 12 shakeup; he waved goodbye to teammate Fabricio Coloccini who will sit out his second game of three, and QPR’s Stéphane M’Bia serving the last of his trio of enforced absences.

Thats the problem with having 3 heavy hitters at the back, if you’re not willing to play more than 3 at the back it mars the concept of rotation. However, with QPR being unable to shut out against anyone and Simpson not guaranteed the 90 ,you can play those 3.

    Massive, massive Sunday fail.

The good news is, I have 2.0 to fix this lot.

    Bego, McCarthy

    Baines, Rafael, Gorkss, Wilson, Hughes

    Bale, Fellaini, HBA, Walters, Sterling

    RVP, Ba, Berbs

I’m thinking HBA to Silva maybe? Then Walters to a Sunderland midfielder for in time for their good fixtures and DGW.

Bloody hell, by next GW I’ll have spent 20 points on transfers. Never ever spent this much!

What are people’s thoughts on Jelavic > Ruiz + Suarez > RvP (Captaining the right player is starting to become a problem and I know this would make it so much easier).

it would be next week and it would cost me 4 points.

There is more kneejerking and taking hits than ever before on FFS this season imo. I’ve made total -4 hits and never used my wildcard, still doing well(25k). Never had Michu or Hazard.
The massive shipping out of Bale, Cazorla and Tevez this week is another example of this madness. People should hold and wait more.

I do get what you’re saying, but most of the hits I’ve made have easily paid off, hence my rank at the moment.

I think it’s just 2 different approaches. Both can work and by the same token both can go wrong.

        It’s about judgment.

I’ve always played the value game for the first third of the season. It normally means you get a team value of 6-8 m above rivals, which is a really good player.

            athevroy says:

Disagree. It’s about predicting which players will do well in the future. Not Knee-jerking in players because they’ve had a good gameweek and your looking to gain some value.

If you stay ahead of the game and pick the right players, team value will come naturally and you rake in the points. Easier said than done, but I still believe it’s silly to transfer in players only because you are looking to gain value

Can anyone reassure me that I’m fine staying with Pienaar this week instead of taking a -4 to change him to Fellaini? Was planning on freeing money this week by Hernandez>Maloney, but at this pace, I’m not sure I will be able to afford waiting another week to bring in the Belgian Fright Wig.

Let’s just say you take the hit. You would need Fellaini to outscore Pie by 4 points in the next couple of gameweeks. Considering he’s going to sit one soon I’d hold on until A) you’ve got a free trannie or B) Fellaini has served his ban.

Well, its a tough call, I was a Pienaar owner myself until a week ago, Just had to do Pienaar -> Fellaini, just like i did Hazard -> Mata a few weeks before, I know what makes you hold back, its probably the suspension rope dangling on the Big Belgian’s head, But you gotta press the trigger now before the inevitable price rise

He’s already risen by £0.2m so he can only go up a maximum of £0.1m from now until Sunday morning. Since it’s a 4 point hit and there are internationals to be played, surely waiting until Saturday morning would be wiser?

Probably what I’m going to do at this point. I’ll still be able to afford that swap, even when he goes up to 7.5. I’ve probably been overly knee-jerky in the first half of the season to catch on to price rises and build some team value but it has cost me more than I wanted in terms of hits.

Squad is in a decent shape at present so I need to chill and wait, I think.

Malcolm Tucker for England Manager says:

At the moment Fellaini is the main goal threat. When we get a lead and Moyes is comfortable with Jelly i think you may see Fellaini dropping a touch deeper in games to sure things up. The United game was a sort of example of it. Fellaini avoided Vidic until we scored, then followed him around afterwards to negate any attacking threat he had as we were holding the lead. Agreed this won’t be always, but he jelly puts us two up Fellaini won’t be needed as far up top and defensive duties will call

Interesting observation mate, I can totally see how that would be the case in matches. And it makes sense as the last two were games they didn’t have much control over so needed Fellaini to get up there and do the business.

Malcolm Tucker for England Manager says:

It’s the United match that sticks in the mind because of the Vidic scenario i mentioned. I just think once jelly starts converting Everton will turn domination to goals (hopefully) and Moyes naturally cautious approach will be to hold the lead and hit on the break, thus making Fellaini less offensive as matches go on.

I fear i may have jerked my knee so hard that I’ve smashed myself in the face and broken something!

Swapped Carzola for Silva on tin basis that he’s back and will make City tick. Problem is i am now thinking he’ll make them tick, but will be a pivot behind the front man and end up assisting the assists. Basically worried he’ll be helping the others score points whilst getting 2 points weekly as my only city cover.

Am i worried over nothing or should i look at backing out now?

I’m assuming that most people have been swayed more by price rises this season?

I’ve got 102.7 to spend now in real terms (team value 104.7), which I’m sure will help as the season goes on.

You probably can’t afford to ignore too many bandwagon’s even if you don’t necissarily agree with them, because your team value will suffer and it will limit you later on in the campaign.

It’s a pretty serious flaw IMO. Perhaps there should be a floor/ceiling to stop the swings being so influential?
