Watchlist

The Watchlist – Juan Mata

The appointment of Rafael Benitez as Chelsea manager on November 21 was one of those heart-sinking moments Fantasy managers experience each season. Suddenly a solid offensive unit of nailed-on stars was to be managed by a man known more for squad rotation and defensive strategy than attacking swagger.

For Juan Mata owners, it was a devastating blow. Between Gameweek 5 and Gameweek 12, which proved to be Roberto Di Matteo’s last match in charge, the Spanish midfielder had racked up 60 points during a superb run that included four goals, six assists and eight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points. Averaging 8.5 FPL points per game during that above-mentioned period, it seemed the last thing Mata needed was Benitez in charge.

At the start of Benitez’s tenure, Mata owners’ fears were proved right. Not only did Gameweek 13 see Chelsea shuffle their way through a drab 0-0 draw with Man City, in Gameweek 14 the former Valencia man fell victim to his countrymen’s famous rotation policy and started on the bench. Mata did manage to accrue 28 minutes at home to Fulham that day but after the resultant goalless draw, Fantasy managers could be forgiven for tossing in the towel and waving goodbye to the points potential of Chelsea’s attacking assets.

Further sorrow was to follow in Gameweek 15 when West Ham beat Chelsea 3-1 at Upton Park. The game did at least prove comforting for Mata owners, with the Spaniard starting and scoring his side’s only goal. As the team get used to their new manager’s focus on defence and a more rigorous fitness regime in training, though, they have gradually built up the confidence to attack. In Gameweek 16 Chelsea quite simply humbled Sunderland, with Mata once again getting on the scoresheet, as two more FPL bonus points took his total bonus tally to 10 for the season.

Two Premier League starts in a row and a pair of goals in as many games is as good a sign there is that, after an initial slump, Mata could be a key attacking asset during the Benitez era. Chelsea’s December 5 Champions League clash with Nordsjaelland saw the London outfit winning 6-1 and added further fuel to the assertion that Mata is back as a key Fantasy asset – a goal and a trio of assists was a truly mouth-watering score, if converted into FPL or Sky Sports points.

Disappointment was to follow in the World Club Championship final earlier this month where Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Brazilian side Corinthians, but there is still enough evidence in recent weeks to convince us that Mata is a deserved riser in our Watchlist. A goal and assist in last night’s Capital One Cup rout at Leeds was accompanied by a man of the match award as Mata’s fine form under his compatriot continued.

As Fantasy managers scour the market in order to replace the suspended Marouane Fellaini, Mata looks an enticing proposition. While other premium priced options such as Gareth Bale sit on four yellows, one away from a booking, Santi Cazorla is set for a blank Gameweek 19 after Arsenal’s Boxing Day clash with West Ham was postponed. Over 44,000 FPL managers have snapped Mata up this week – a clear sign that faith in his potential for points is on the rise again. Fixtures for Chelsea are mixed over the festive period (AVL, nor, eve, QPR) but the promise is there for Mata to add to his six goals and six assists for the season – those two home games with Villa and QPR look like particular Christmas crackers for the diminutive midfield schemer.

Regarding price, Mata still offers value in the FPL and Sky Sports game. While his cost remains at 8.9 in the latter game, Mata’s slow start to the season, caused by injury and fatigue, saw his FPL price plummet from a starting valuation of 9.5 to 8.8 in Gameweek 6. He’s been mainly rising since and is now once again back to his initial valuation of 9.5; not bad for a player who racked up 163 points, six goals and an incredible 16 assists in his top-flight debut last time round.

The only real downside is Benitez’s penchant for rotation. Last night’s game with Leeds was Chelsea’s eight in 24 days and with the likes of Victor Moses, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Marko Marin and even Ramires vying for berths in the attacking midfield three, the new man in charge has options aplenty should he choose to freshen up his starting XI over the hectic Christmas schedule. Of that group, Mata and Hazard look the most nailed on, though, and with Benitez keen to win over the Blues support, he can perhaps ill-afford to overlook his compatriot’s stunning form as the Blues look to get their faltering title bid back on track.

You can see avg. position from each match if you go to the match report, click the "live" button, then click "gamecast".

There's a button under the graphic of the field listed as "tactical formation" to look at starting position and average position.

      Here's a link a report: http://espnfc.com/us/en/gamecast/345853/gamecast.html?soccernet=true&cc=5901

no because even if you bench snoddy and he scores you can enjoy the price rises whereas fellaini is only going to harm your value. and, of course, holding fellaini would hurt with inevitable festive rotation.

This is one of those nightmare scenarios that occur when you have such a strong attacking 8!

You'd have to bench Berbs on form but somehow it feels wrong. I'm benching Sterling to play Berbs and I'm justifying it by citing the fact I have Suarez and Sterling is due a rest. I don't know if you can find an excuse not to bench Berbs this time though.

both capable of beating the other. man city could win 4-0 and silva get 6. ust as arsenal could win 0-2 and cazorla get 14. and visa versa. this is where the huge luck element of the game comes in

Having trouble with my internet connection lately. Every time I go on to Xbox live, I get kicked from online games even though my internet doesn't cut out. Has been happening with CoD and Fifa.

In terms of Fifa, I can go into an online match but it cuts out every five minutes and says that I've lost connection with the servers even though my internet doesn't actually cut out.

I know this is probably impossible to understand, but I could really do with a bit of help?

@Granville - Re: the Cazorla vs Silva debate on the last page

I wasn't saying that Cazorla is necessarily a better player than Silva, I wouldn't say either are natural goalscorers, just that Santi's score on Monday night was a freak and wouldn't expect Silva to replicate it at all (especially not the header :P).

I get the point though, if Cazorla isn't a natural goalscorer and he can get a score like that against that shoddy Reading side then why can't Silva? Again my argument would be that Monday night was a freak score for a player like Cazorla/Silva, the likes of which we won't see again very soon.

Both similar players playing similar roles against a very poor side right now.

The difference is that Man City are more likely to win by a larger number of goals and ALL of their play goes through Silva. Whereas Arsenal play more stuff out wide so Santi isn't as much of an assist machine as Silva.

silva would have to play until gw50 to get to cazorla's 7 goals, i wouldn't worry too much about what overly defensive/hopeful silva owners say. maybe one day he'll suddenly blossom like fabregas or mata into a 10 a season man but there's zero evidence of that happening right now

I have your dilemma. I brought in Sagna last week and i'm already considering not playing him behind Demel, Skrtel and Simpson. Wigan could be up for it but... if Arsenal control the game they could keep a clean sheet. Hard one to call, but we've bought him now so maybe we should back him.

Would love some input on my captaincy dilemma this week:

Tevez (rea) - great fixture, could rack up an enormous score but also a very big chance of only being allowed 10 minutes of game time.
Ba (QPR) - decent fixture but Newcastle are in pretty horrible form and QPR are starting to get a bit more organised generally.
Cazorla (wig) - confidence must be sky high, he loves an away game and Wigan have been fairly leaky. Has returned more than his fair share of blanks though.
Van Persie (swa) - always a good option, the safe choice but Swansea are unpredictable and it's a potentially difficult game for Man Utd.

All opinions are welcome but more than anything I'm looking for some persuasive arguments to sway me one way or the other...

Tevez is at home btw, but i'd still captain RVP: fancy him to nick a goal and couple of assists. swansea are the worst when it comes to defending on set pieces

Cheers Kaz, food for thought, just checked and only two teams have conceded more goals at home than Swansea this season. Hmm...

I would and I will, I'm asking people for their opinions and reasoning to give myself some different angles on the problem - I won't hold anyone responsible for the decision I make.

Why come here if not to exchange ideas and advice?

I was only pulling your leg. If I had rvp I'd probably be boring and go for him. I'm keeping on suarez just in case he decides to shoot between the posts and I'm stubborn.

No worries, I've seen people actually blame others for decisions they've made on the basis of advice they've received here so I know it happens, wanted to make clear I'm not one of them!

It's a dangerous thing to be stubborn with your transfers/captains - it's how I still haven't got Michu in my team! 😉

Its all down to the players to actually perform that makes a decision a good or bad one. Its a bit rich to blame another poster's advice if they go with that advice. I've never had Michu either!

Tough one. I was set on Tevez until the scoutcast. The boys spoke sense. He's a real rotation risk this week. RVP for me, for now...

I know, my team looks so good with the captaincy on Tevez because he could run riot but the downside risk is scary. RVP is looking like the popular choice right now.

Same dilemma but replace Ba with Suarez. On Suarez at the moment but probably bottle it and switch to RVP .............. so I suppose the answer has to be RVP

Cheers, looking fairly unanimous - I expected more of a split to be honest. I'd love some team news to make my decision easier!

Could really use some transfer help this week. Have some concerns about making sure I have 11 players both this week and next. Would really appreciate any advice / help.

I have 1 FT and 0.5m in the bank.

    Here's my team:

    Jaaskelainen

    Rafael -- McAuley -- Enrique

    Cazorla -- Michu -- Morrison -- Puncheon

    RVP -- Tevez -- Giroud

Subs: Begovic ------ Sterling -- Bassong -- Shawcross

    My concerns:

Fitness (Rafael and Enrique); Rest/Rotation (Sterling, Tevez, and Giroud); Blank GW 19 (Cazorla and Giroud).

    Thanks!

      No. Defoe might.

The word on the street is that the knock Ade has will keep him out and Dempsey will start.

Yeah but didn't AVB say that Adebayor should be fit to play, should Dempsey start either way?
