The Stock Check – Sunday

Filed under: The Stock Check - Posted by: Mark

Juan Mata carries his form over from the double Gameweek to help Chelsea hold out for the points, despite Theo Walcott inspiring a second-half comeback. Down at the Lane, Clint Dempsey snatch three points from United as Robin Van Persie notches once again. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s action…

On the Up

Juan Mata
His outstanding form continues. A sublime piece of control and a calm finish gave the Spaniard his eighth goal of the campaign. Mata’s consistency of returns is frightening and presents a compelling argument to sit tight, despite concerns on the occasional rest: he has now returned a goal or assist in seven of his last eight league starts.

Cesar Azpilicueta
We’ve been anticipating that the Spaniard would surrender his start at right-back but the signs are he’s now made the role his own. While Branislav Ivanovic returned today, he slotted into central defence, leaving Azpilicueta to earn a seventh consecutive league start and earn a fourth assist of the season. John Terry’s return to the starting lineup could still shake things up, however.

Frank Lampard
Like Steven Gerrard, the Chelsea stalwart is another of the former “holy trinity” enjoying a renaissance. Lampard has started the last five for Rafa’s side, scoring four goals in the process. As always, his prowess from the spot remains a key weapon in his armoury and, at 8.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he’s presenting a differential for those who can’t quite stretch to acquire Mata.

Theo Walcott
Favoured by many as their Fantasy captain with two fixtures in the Gameweek, Walcott duly delivered at the first attempt with a smartly taken goal. With nine strikes for the season, it’s indicative of Walcott’s new level of consistency that he’s yet to go more than two league starts without a goal this term. While Santi Cazorla delivered a superb pass to earn the assist, his eighth of the season, Walcott remains the key asset on show amongst the Arsenal midfielders.

Robin Van Persie
What’s left to be said about the Dutchman? His consistency is incredible and his value as a Fantasy asset was again underlined by eighteenth league goal. Van Persie has now scored in his last five league outings; in fact, he’s only failed to score in one of his last ten.

Clint Dempsey
A fifth goal of the season, his second in three league outings, Dempsey filled the void left by Emmanuel Adebayor’s absence to demonstrate his goal-getting ability once again. With a variety of riches available in midfield, it seems unlikely that many Fantasy managers will look to Dempsey but, like Gerrard and Lampard, the American has proved to be a worthy differential when he starts matches.

Going Down

Demba Ba
We wondered whether form would be enough to keep Rafa from exercising his rotation policy and today provided the answer. Seemingly, even though Ba may emerge as first choice to lead the Chelsea attack, he’ll remain prone to rotation with Torres looming as an option. While the Spaniard again failed to make an impact, it’s doubtful whether that will count against his chances of earning future opportunities. With two Cup ties between now and the next league outing at Reading, Ba owners look set to face continued uncertainty.

Gareth Bale
With the likes of Walcott, Mata, David Silva, Steven Gerrard and Michu all fetching returns, Bale was one of the only midfield heavy-hitters to deliver a blank. It’s a harsh reality that his owners will now be fidgeting having seen their man now return in only one of his last five league appearances – albeit a hat-trick in the demolition of Villa back in Gameweek 19.

Jermain Defoe
The slide down the Fantasy pecking order continues. Incredibly, Defoe has now scored just once in his last eight league matches – a run that surely finds his 16% ownership questioning the merits of keeping faith with a player who offers little outside of his ability to get goals. Defoe has not fetched an assist since Gameweek 12.

Jan Vertonghen
Only fit enough for the bench after illness, the Belgian has now started two of the last four and could face a battle to reinstate himself in a rotating Spurs back four. Andre Villas-Boas has now started Michael Dawson in five of the last six, with Kyle Naughton also occupying the left-back role in the last five. With Benoit Assou-Ekotto coming off the bench to help provide the late goal, the left-back position could now be closed off to Vertonghen and it may be questionable whether he can offer the security of starts to warrant his 6.4 FPL price tag with Dawson a possible option at 4.5.

  1. Luiz > Baines seems like a good move right? Have exactly enough to do this before Luiz drops. Everton got WBA and Villa home after this GW.

    1. A Baines injury in tomorrow's game...

  2. bego, bunn
    obrien, demel, gibbs, azpi, mariappa
    fellaini, michu, walcott, mata, puncheon
    ba, rvp, suarez

should i bring bale to next games?
but to do that need change suarez or ba for fletcher…and depends of that change also walcott or michu/fellaini
i was thinking in suarez out and fellaini or walcott out… should do that? bale worth the efforth?

  3. Is 352 still the way forward?

    1. Hard to know, innit.

    2. Not for me, never was but the majority of RMT's suggest it's popular

    3. Get the right players, not the right formation.

      1. Far too obvious

        1. You'd think so, but apparently not.

      2. What about those who have the cash to afford good players in pretty much all slots so that it comes down to who to bench? Do you go form, fixtures, home team?

    4. aim is to get to 60 points any formation

    5. Tried and tested 343 for me.

    6. depends on your front 8, if you have 3 great forwards you have to bench 1 each week and end up hating it when they score.

    7. for me, yes. famous 5, suarex, rvp, ruiz, cheapie defenders all the way,

      1. That wont always be the case though, I fancy United to start keeping more cleanies now that Vidic is back. They were terrible early on but should tighten up, So much so I've stuck in DDG and Rafael, easy fixtures ahead. Ii wouldn't have thought of it earlier

        1. yeah i'm coming round too, but it will take suarez to sturridge to make the cash

          1. Thats the very move I've gone for too , gives me a strong midfield. Decent defence and. Rvp. Sturridge and Pog up front, Pog wont play much though

  4. guys going for rvp and aguero, are you going to split the captaincy around as these rotate well or will rvp still be used for most games?

    1. Mostly RVP. Aguero for some easy home games.

  5. just 2 teams with clean sheets this week. further indication that spending on defense is not worthwhile perhaps?

    1. High price defenders aren't worth this year, Evra and Baines the exceptions do.

    2. Wouldn't spend mor than 4 unless they have attacking threat.

      1. Apart from dawson

  6. Who's on pens for Sp*rs?

    1. Chris Armstrong.

    2. Not a clue - nobody really knows and anybody giving a definitive answer is guessing.

      1. Would say Defoe.

  7. On WC, currently got Begovic, thinking of switching to Mignolet to partner Bunn though. Good idea or not?

    1. Good move, Stoke shipping more than FedEx these days.

    2. Good fixtures apart from gw25. I'm keeping

    3. I'm getting ddg for bego soonish

  8. How is this for a WC team?

    Jussi Federici
    Mariappa Nelsen Clyne Garrido Davies
    Bale Walcott Silva Michu Fellaini
    Ba RVP Sturridge

    1. Terrible.

    2. Have fun picking your subs!

    3. Too much value on your bench

    4. Pau
      • Reputation Level: Scout

Downgrade ba and upgrade your defender

    5. If your intention was to pick a side with the worst defence ever then I woul say excellent.

  9. is evra a must have if you can afford it

    1. not a must have but if you have nothing else to spend the money one you may as well get him

    2. don't think so but has the security of starts unlike those at Chelsea or City.

  10. If the Falcons win this I'll cry.

Then the Patriots will smash the Ravens and then the Falcons in the Super Bowl.

    Another ring for Brady.

    Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyy???!?!?!

    1. Falcons aren't winning shit. Niners mate!

  11. so all things considered I may go Fellainiless from GW26

    1. i'm affro-nted by your crazy plans

    1. Thank you

  12. only davies will rise after fe hours or migo too ??

  13. If chelsea beat swansea in the capital one cup will they have yet another dgw?

    1. Yes and liv too I think

    2. At some point yes, but more likely Swansea DGW!

    Lost my other post so:
How does this look for a WC team?
    http://i.imgur.com/PjkkgUF.png?1
    £0.2 in the bank.

  15. Only 5 players have got double figures 5 times this season. Name them. :-)

    1. *per game, not GW!

    2. bale, fellaini, rvp, hazard and evra ? :D

    3. Mata, RVP, Ba, Michu, Fellani

    4. RvP, Hazard, Bale, Fella, Evra

  16. it worth when u wc to have one defender from cheslea , city , everton : i mean i t worth to have

    ; nasty , azpi , baines

    1. English please

  17. I think that RVP consistency gives less chance to catch up in the rankings. HE is so consistent and the high ranked managers just captain him and enjoy the pts. The captain is the numero uno differential. In the past there were several captaincy options and there were more chances and the game was more interesting. Now every week there is the boring option captaining RVP

    1. That's correct
That's why i don't even have RvP. It's bloody boring.

  18. Caz+O'Brien+Punch+Walcott (c) v Fellani+Walcott+8?

  19. Anyone reckon Bale will drop in price to 9.7 before next GW?

  20. I think Milner playing will be a big factor in Silva's returns. Nasri clashes a little. Silva is main source of creativity with Barry, Garcia and Milner in there

  21. How Did Torres play? what are the fixtures for Chelsea in teh next two weeks need to know if Ba will play vs Reading

  22. I'm not sure if want tomorrow game to take place... If Fellaini or Puncheon won't play Davies 10 pts are waiting on the bench...

  23. With money being an important factor, which of the following do you think are better FPL prospects:

    De Guzmen or Michu
    Bale or Lennon
    Baines or Fellaini

Having De Guzmen & Lennon would allow me to have an all rounded balanced team, rather than an ultra weak defence. Baines vs Fellaini is basically which you think will do better over the next 6 weeks or so.

    Comments appreciated.

  24. Considering WC to this

    Begovic/Federici
    Dawson/Nelsen/Clichy/Clyne/Davies
    Bale/Hazard/Michu/Gerrard/Taarabt
    Van Persie/Dzeko/Lambert

Thoughts? It leaves me with 0.2 in bank

  25. Fellaini,Suarez,Remy OR Bale,Sturridge,Berbatov??
