As revealed last night, we’ve struck a deal with the guys over at TotelFootball which will take in the remainder of this season’s Champions League. With the next round of matches comprising the four fixtures over this Tuesday and Wednesday, we take a look at the options on offer for our squads ahead of this evening’s deadline.
As per the rules of the competition, our team must be lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with a further four warming the bench in a 15 man squad. You can pick up to two players per team, though if you exceed this allocation, you will be deducted five points per player over that quota.
With only eight teams to choose from, striking a balance is tricky. If you choose to go without points hits, you’ll need two players from seven teams and one player from the remaining club. The deadline is 7.45pm, though, meaning we can tinker with our picks for tonight’s two games after the official squad lists are rolled out – a real advantage for those favouring the hands-on approach.
Last 16: Week 2 Selections
Looking at the results from week 1’s matches, it’s intriguing to see that not one of the four hosts either clinched victory or returned a clean sheet. Indeed, only one club managed to keep out their opponents, as Juventus racked up a 3-0 triumph at Celtic Park.
Arsenal’s home clash with Bayern looks likely to afford us goals. While much has been made of the visitors’ phenomenal away record in the Bundesliga (10 wins and a draw from 11 games, 27 goals for, with one against) they did, however, clinch victory in just one of their away matches in the group stages and were beaten 3-1 on the road by Bate Borisov. Theo Walcott’s domestic form makes him impossible to ignore, while Franck Ribery also gets the nod in midfield. We’re doubling up on the visitors, though, and opting for Philipp Lahm’s threat from the back for tonight’s encounter.
Porto’s home record in the group stages affords us a little more confidence. They won all three games in front of their own fans, though visitors Malaga avoided defeat in all of their away matches, with a win and two draws. Porto full-back Danilo has played the last five and provided an assist in their final group match with PSG, while Lucho Gonzalez has chipped in with two goals and a pair of assists from midfield. Isco gets the nod for the visitors – he’s also bagged a couple of goals and two assists and is our preferred Malaga midfield option with Eliseu out injured.
Milan’s home clash with Barcelona is trickier to call. The hosts have won each of their last six at the San Siro in Serie A, while Barca have wobbled a little in the league on their travels, with just one away win in three. Nevertheless, we’re handing Jordi Alba a place at left-back and giving Lionel Messi one of our two forward slots for this one. Milan’s raiding right-back Mattia De Sciglio gets the nod, with the hope he can offset any possible goals conceded with an assist or two.
Galatasaray will be buoyed by the signings of Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder ahead of their home clash with Schalke. Drogba grabbed a goal and assist on his debut the other day and while Schalke impressed on the road in the group stages, they have picked up two points from their last six away games in the Bundesliga – affording the hosts plenty optimism here. Fernando Muslera is our keeper of choice, while Burak Yilmaz’s six goals in the group stages are enough to earn our vote.
