The Community Round Up

In anticipation of the launch of further Fantasy games, community members have spent their time looking back to see what lessons they can learn from last season and continue to plot their strategies for the forthcoming season. As always, we also take time out to cast an eye over the community leagues and tournaments taking place this summer.

Hottest Topics

Sometimes the boundaries between fantasy football and art blur as The 3rd Turd has proved with this colourful look at player points accumulation over last season. The graph can be broken down by position, teams and individual players. Lots to take in and an amazing sight to behold.

Elsewhere,”uber debate” rumbles on, with those favouring an “uber cheap” defence as well as those looking at more expensive options, continuing to make impressive cases for their causes.

In Tommy We Trust has been flying the flag for the “ubers” and explaining about how the strategy can form part of a balanced side. Tommy has also been looking at three- way uber attacking options. While Daniel, who favours more investment in defence, arrived to rain on Tommy’s parade and look the pitfalls of going “uber”.

JCC is another cynic who has surfaced this week is; he has set about pouring scorn on those considering Michu as an option in 2013/14. There are quite simple other far better options, he argues.

Meanwhile The Parmtree has been gazing into his crystal ball to give a lengthy team by team analysis for the forthcoming season. This epic tome is in two parts, which can be seen here and here.

Our own hot topics have also been continuing and this week we asked to what extent fantasy football affects our mood and lives. We were surprised by how many admitted the psychological scars a bad Gameweek can leave.

Community Tournaments

FFS UEFA’s intriguing Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) game turned its attention to bids for strikers this week. Among the most successful teams, which are made up along Premier League club lines, were Aston Villa led by HVT, which welcomed Lionel Messi whilst Anorak‘s Spurs plotted the acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo. Meanwhile, Chelsea owned by Declan acquired the deadly duo of Falcao and Rooney, with Everton proudly purchasing the services of Edinson Cavani under Saniul‘s guidance. Still leading the game are Fulham, led by PeppieandFelix. The deadline for Transfer Window 1 is Saturday 2359 HRS BST, where clubs will look to trade players amongst themselves. Anyone who would like to join can sign up here.

10.0, joint most expensive with Lobos.

I'll be honest, I know nothing about this league.

Let's play PREDICT THE PRICES 2013/2014!

As some of us might remember, a year ago we played the game where we tried to guess player prices for the new FPL season. With the total variance of £28.0m for 100 players, Grohlinisagod won the competition among 31 FFS users. Forca Inter was the runner up, Running Riot was the third, while Ginkapo confidently occupied the honourable 31st place. With the FPL launch imminent, it's a good time to check our predicting talents again!

    GAME RULES
They are simple: predict the prices that will be given to the selected players in the new FPL season. I've selected 100 players (5 players from each club). For every £0.5m deviation from the correct price you’ll receive £0.5m. Your final score will be the sum of the errors of your estimations. The less the score, the better. When the FPL prices are released, I’ll calculate the scores and post the table with the results.

The link for the game: fpl2013.wordpress.com

(you can log in and post a comment there using your gravatar/wordpress account with the same picture as here; change your name before posting if necessary)

Hint #1: the prices as of the end of last season are available here: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/player-list/

Hint #2: since the list is rather long, it’s convenient to copy it first somewhere else, e.g. to Wordpad, rather than assign prices directly in the comments section

Take your time and good luck!

Linked with Remy, yeah we'll take him - Linked with Jovetic, forget Remy! - Linked with Higuain, Jovetic who? - Linked with Suarez... only Messi or Ronaldo could top that rumour.

I don't see why being 32 would mean you couldn't play every game. I've seen loads of players who haven't even started declining until 34+. Plus, whisper it, but Demel isn't very good.

Maximising the potential double game week in GW1 is a must IMO. Will certainly be playing the wildcard in week two.

Yes, but you're moving Martinez out of his best position, and a position in which he was hugely influential for Bayern last season. Why not just buy a quality centre back?

As DMs, Schweinsteiger + Martinez = much better than Schweinsteiger + Thiago.

Only worth it if Guardiola thinks that Schweinsteiger's decline in form since his injury is terminal. Martinez + Thiago at DM?

But I'm only guessing. There's bafflement (and scepticism) in Germany about this story.

          - Most of the problem came from his dad - people at the club have been meeting with him to appease him
          - Lesson learned with Pique and Cesc - bigger effort to retain high promise young talent
          - His brother just signed a long-term deal
          - Villa was sold to guarantee more playing time for him (Cesc / Iniesta can play in the front 3)

Swansea were originally going to play NAC Breda from the Eredivisie, but that match had to be cancelled for ground security reasons. The match against Dutch 3rd tier side Haaglandia was therefore arranged at very short notice as a substitute fixture.

If anybody really cares... Villa drew 1-1 in their first friendly.

Darren Bent, Shay Given, Barry Bannan, Stephen Ireland, Alan Hutton and Nathan Delfouneso were all left behind as they look for new clubs.

First half, 4-2-3-1: Guzan, Herd, Vlaar, Baker, Bennett; Delph, Sylla,; Albrighton, Bacuna, Tonev; Bowery.

2nd half team,4-3-3: Steer, Lowton, Okore (Carruthers 90), Clark, Luna; El Ahmadi, Gardner, Westwood; Weimann, Helenius, Agbonlahor.

Villa goal - Lowton to Helenius. Benteke could stay because he's 'only' on 20k a week, but clearly if he leaves and Bent is 99% guaranteed to leave, Helenius becomes the best forward FPL Villa attacking player.

I'll just add I'm gutted about Benteke, but he did this to Genk last year so it's no surprise.

Sure by the time the season starts I'll be ready and optimistic as always but I'm really sad about how the window has been going for United so far.

1: Rooney -_-. Still a class player (I'm in the group that scoffs when people say he's no longer world class) but at this point we should cut our losses and throw everything that we have at Lewandowski with the money we get from selling Rooney. Heck, we should even offer an audacious swap deal if BD somehow are able to afford Rooney's wages.

    2. Bale & Ronaldo: Are you kidding me? You have this amazing 23 year old decimating the PL and single handedly dragging his team through enough games to now be considered world class. Yet you're chasing someone who would cost around £30m more and would eat your wage bill alive. Granted he is the first/second best player in the world BUT our squad doesn't need that calibre of a player to win the treble, we could definitely do that with Bale + Lewo + Thiago in our squad. We can do it without him and what's more Madrid will laugh us off if we try to get him anyway. Stop sitting around and make Spurs & Bale an offer they can't refuse.

    3. Thiago: Two clubs chasing this guy who he's looking at, Bayern and United. Bayern have just won a treble and have one of the top 3 squads in Europe (not including us). We can't let him go to Bayern, it's a complete joke if we let him join this rival Europe superpower. Solution? Offer Rooney to Barca and ask for Thiago + cash in return. Offer Thiago a strong amount of cash to join us. Not an outrageous amount, just enough to recognise him as a mature and well established superstar (as he obviously will be one) rather than a developing European talent.

    4. Baines? Go away. He's 28 and had a fantastic season at Everton because Pienaar works well with him. Young can't provide defensive cover at all and Nani + Baines would end in tears. Keep Evra until he retires and add that £16m to the Bale cash fund instead.

Sorry for the rant, this Thiago to BM news has really ruined my mood :/

Is it a case of will top players gamble their futures on moyes?

Is hardly a world renowned manager like pep so why would a top young player sign for a club with a lot of competition and an unknown manager when the can go to a top club with more definite prospects. I know if it was my kid and he was outrageously talented I'd be recommending Munich

There are so many top class players that we've missed out on, not only fairly recently but over the past 15 years. Recently Hazard, Modric and Sneijder have snubbed us, you could even go back to Ronaldinho in 03, and even further back to Shearer and Gazza. It doesn't surprise me that we're not making many top class signings these days.

Might as well just do a proper draft league. It's similar as there aren't many transfers/trades but there is only one of every player! You draft a team and then work with that for the season, perhaps with a few trades/free agent pick ups as the season progresses.

You'd need a few interested people though and it takes a bit of effort to arrange

Other than FFS membership and the tools it brings, what tools do you all employ for FPL?

I always ensure my phone has FFS & FISO saved for quick links. At the start of the season, I also do the following:

Put Club fixtures into speadsheet listing team name at top, then their 38 games below that in order.
Then, pair roatating teams next to each other.
Then print the list off onto a few sheets of A4.
Then go through the fixtures highlighting good/bad blocks with green (easy spell) and pink (tough spell) highlighter pens.
Then fold these sheets and keep them in wallet so I've got them for reference most of the day.

I find it is useful for identifying good fixtures that coincide for rotating sides and having a rough idea of when I might want to switch from, say, Villa & W.Brom defenders, to say, Cardiff and Swansea.

A bit far, maybe, but good for quick referencing and mid-term planning.

Anyone else got any of their own I could copy/steel?

Nah. Wont happen. Barca with Messi and Neymar.
Real wont sell their star name at such a time.
How would that make them look?

maybe Real would get Suarez and Bale. enough star power in those two. and Ronaldo was qouted back in February saying that "it would be very difficult but not impossible to join Man City'.

I dont know. Suarez good as he can be is far from Ronaldo really. One big season in a top league and even then, nothing came of it. Ronaldo much more consistent and proven season after season.
Bale is top drawer, but not 40+ goals a season man. These 2 wouldn't outscore Ronaldo and Benzema for me. And if only Ronaldo left, for both to play, Benzema would have to move to the bench for Suarez.

              Imagine the captain choice nightmares

Hmm, Van Persie home to Southampton or Ronaldo away to Cardiff? Would certainly be good to see some challenfge RVP for most captained every week.

Plus, affording both. He'd be 14m.
Budgeting for both would be tricky.
Hope it happens. I won tickets to City v Hull in a ML.
              🙂

it would be a nightmare fantasy wise but would guarantee a intriguing and highly entertaining PL season. and well done on winning those tickets.

maybe captain Aguero that gw to make your Etihad visit a memorable one. 😀

                  No way.
Maybe. Probably. He's due a good week. Its Hull at home.

This is probably a bad time of night to bring up such an idea but who'd be interested in playing a draft style league next season in FPL? So the basic idea is...

    1. Usual squad of 15. 2GK 5DEF 5MID 3FOR
    2. Pick players in pre determined draft order 1st round, reverse order in 2nd round and so on. NO PLAYER VALUES ££
    3. Once every team has 15 players everyone else is a free agent (FA). At the start of every month you have the chance to swap any of your players for a FA
    4. FA Priority order will be the reverse of the draft order. Once you take a FA you go to back of line
    5. Trades can be freely made within the league as long as they are not ludicrous!
    6. Points scoring is exactly the same as FPL.

Could probably run the whole thing on the FPL site as long as none of the squads go over £100m!

How do you qll find time for this stuff?
The cricket one, the sky game, the European game, the doubles one.
Just playing FPL with one team and only being concerned with ML and rank takes a lot of my time.
I would struggle to keep track of so many games.

tbh i don't think there is really that much to do after you've drafted your team. Of course you'll have injuries and stuff to consider during the season but it's not like you will be contemplating big transfers every week like in FPL.

Transfer window time could be interesting in a draft league though. Having the number one pick of the new pool of free agents will become very valuable!

It the best format really ,but would be a lot of work on fpl site

Are there no other sites that run draft leagues? Would be keen to play in one , but using fpl would be very messy.

Why do you think so? I reckon using FPL site would save a load of work. All people have to do is pick the 15 players they drafted and selected their team and captain every week. The FPL site takes care of the rest.

I'm sure their are plenty of other problems mind you but a simple one can't be that hard to run and manage

Need the 100MM barrier then, but running it outside fpl would be a nightmare.

Yeah the 100m barrier is the first major problem. But if you have say 8-10 teams that's 120-150 players being picked. You really aren't gonna have too many big hitter in there.

Might be a problem though when some of the team go shopping in January and bring in a forward priced up at £15m in FPL who someone brings in as a free agent!

Hahaha. The American systems never do make sense to me. A bit like how the world series is only open to their teams. Or the way they have NFC and AFC instead of regional leagues in the NFL regular season.

Looks like Liverpool are going to bid 15m for Bernard. Think a club in Europe will get him, though. I think he'd be exceptional alongside Coutinho.
There's talk of Jorginho too, could possibly have a Brazilian core in our midfield.

Also looks like Thiago is going to Munich. United might have to move in for Strootman but he's sparking interest from many clubs.

    Hm.
