Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Defenders

We roll out our third article on this season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list this afternoon. Having assessed the Goalkeepers and Budget Defenders, we now cast an eye over the mid-price backline options, focussing on those players in the 5.0 to 5.5 bracket.

FPL’s decision to price Arsenal’s defence under 6.0 looks to offer Fantasy managers strong value next season. The Gunners conceded just 37 times in 2012/13 – the second best backline in the league – with Per Mertesacker once again looking the most secure option under Arsene Wenger. The German registered 135 points last season and with three goals to his name, seems the Gunners’ first-choice central defender; he would have ended last term as fourth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System, had it been implemented. Laurent Koscielny may transpire to be a viable alternative, though – he ousted Thomas Vermaelen from the picture as the season unfolded and scored twice in 20 starts over an injury-hit season. Although Wenger still looks to have faith in Bacary Sagna as a first-choice right-back, question marks hang over the other side of the Arsenal defence, with neither Kieran Gibbs or Nacho Monreal assured of starts.

Two goals and four assists sum up Matt Lowton’s attacking potential for Villa but with cheaper alternatives in Paul Lambert’s backline, it’s difficult to justify splashing the cash (5.0) on the raiding right-back, bearing in mind his side kept a mere five clean sheets in 2012/13. Seamus Coleman has the potential to be one of the bargains of the season under new Everton boss Roberto Martinez. If, as expected, he’s utilised on the right of midfield in a 3-4-3, the 5.0 priced Republic of Ireland international will be snapped up for his attacking potential alone and should be a highly sought-after Fantasy commodity in 2013/14. Staying on the subject of right-backs, Fulham’s Sascha Riether will be looking to replicate a debut season at the Cottage which harvested a goal and six assists. At 5.0, though, he is less friendly on the budget than team mate Fernando Amorebieta, at 4.5.

Jamie Carragher’s retirement is likely to afford Fantasy managers a strong mid-price Liverpool alternative next time out. Both Kolo Toure (5.0) and Martin Skrtel (5.5) are vying for the role alongside Daniel Agger – if the Ivorian gets the nod, he’ll be snapped up by Fantasy managers aplenty as a route into a backline that registered 16 clean sheets last season. Bearing in mind he’d also be cheaper than both Liverpool’s keepers and Toure has the potential to be a significant asset over 2013/14 if he forces his way past Skrtel in the Reds’ pecking order.

Matija Nastasic remains under the 6.0 mark at City. The young Serbian has been priced at 5.5 and is seen as the ideal partner for Vincent Kompany in Manuel Pellegrini’s defence – the new manager’s intentions are yet unclear, though, and with a more expansive style of play expected, City may struggle to deliver the same level of resilience which has produced 18, 17 and 18 clean sheets over the previous three seasons. The likes of Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott are similarly priced but may struggle for regular game time by comparison, with Nastasic looking the most secure of City’s mid-price options under the Chilean.

Over at Old Trafford, both Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans will set you back 5.5 but, again, there remains uncertainty over David Moyes’ preferred starters at the back for United. Evans produced three goals and a pair of assists in just 23 appearances last time out, though, and if he can finally cement a role as a regular under the new regime, the Northern Ireland centre-half has the attacking edge over his team-mate.

With a goal and four assists to his name last season, Davide Santon was the most attacking of any Newcastle defender. If he can mirror his 2012/13 displays, the Italian looks the pick of Newcastle’s 5.0 priced defenders but with cheaper options elsewhere in Alan Pardew’s back-four, the Italian could struggle for our attentions. Certainly, there’s no doubting the ability of Mathieu Debuchy, who’ll be looking to improve upon a return of a single assists in 14 appearances since joining up at St James’ Park in January.

Seb Bassong and Russell Martin will both set you back 5.0 as a route into a Norwich defence that produced 10 clean sheets in the season gone by. While Bassong looks nailed-on at centre-half, with Steven Whittaker providing competition for Martin’s right-back berth, Michael Turner’s 4.5 price tag plays a part in how we assess the Canaries. Considering all three notched three times last term, Turner looks the best value of the trio.

The Stoke defence all come in at mid-price after a season which saw them concede just 45 times – only two more goals against than United. With Tony Pulis gone, however, there’s a feeling they will struggle to keep out their opponents and as new boss Mark Hughes prepares to go on the attack, the Potters may not offer the same value we’ve come to expect. New boy Erik Pieters (5.0) will be tasked with bombing forward down the left and is cheaper than central defensive pairing Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross, at 5.5 apiece.

Angel Rangel’s three goals and an assist in 2012/13 have persuaded FPL to elevate the Swansea right-back to 5.5 – the priciest option of any in Michael Laudrup’ backline. Ashley Williams and Chico should guarantee starts in the centre of defence at 5.0 apiece. Intriguingly, Williams’ displays would have seen him finish as second top defender (and fourth overall) in the new Bonus Points System, were it implemented last season – the fact he failed to produce any goals or assists highlights its not all about attacking contribution. Ben Davies’ game time looks anything but secure now that Neil Taylor is back in contention. With Michel Vorm similarly priced between the sticks, the Dutchman’s save point potential and propensity for stopping spot-kicks may well make him the best Swansea option but with United Spurs and Liverpool in the opening four Gameweeks, faith in the Swans defence is understandably diminished from the off.

Fit-again Younes Kaboul is the most intriguing option at the back for Tottenham. Coming in at 5.0, the Frenchman started Gameweek 1 last year but failed to play again due to injury – he is favourite to get the nod as Jan Vertonghen’s central defensive partner, with his pace crucial to Spurs’ high defensive line, though there’s the possibility Andre Villas-Boas may utilise rotate Michael Dawson and Steve Caulker (both 5.0) in order to maintain the trio’s fitness. Benoit Assou-Ekotto (5.5) may remain in the driving seat for the left-back role – the Cameroon international has competition from Danny Rose but FPL’s decision to classify the latter as a midfielder virtually kills his Fantasy appeal.

Gareth McAuley is the priciest option at the back for West Brom. The centre-half comes in at 5.5 after racking up three goals and three assists last season but despite playing six more games than Ben Foster, outscored the keeper by just eight points in FPL. Foster, at 5.0, is likely to prove better value due to save points, while the likes of Liam Ridgewell and Jonas Olsson also mirror the keeper’s cost. At West Ham, Joey O’Brien has rocketed from 4.0 to 5.5 this season – the most expensive defender on offer under Sam Allardyce. Razvan Rat, at 5.0, looks more secure at left-back but with James Collins offering a 4.5 priced route into a backline with 11 clean sheets in 2012/13, many may be content with the former Villa man instead.

As of date, 19th July 2014, FPL analysis.

The leagues finally back ! The pricing with a couple of exceptions are more or less spot on, the main debate at the moment is whether a team should have :
      1. RVP & Bale
      2. Only RVP
      3. Only Bale

      Scenario 1
Both focal points for their team, both bound to harvest points at the end of the season. Picking a team with both of them is a big gamble, primarily with the confusion of whom to give the captains armband to.
Take into account having the both of them will leave you with 74 million to pick 13 players. What you end up having not matter what the combination is, it always looks like a combination of cheap buys and a very mediocre team with a gamble on the new cheap boys (Parr, Chester) to make up for the 26 million spent on these two
Verdict : While these two make the starting 11 , you have a remaining starting 9 built on budget buys and a few established players
      GK : AVG
      DEF : AVG
MID : Bale + AVG Mid
      FWD : Strong
      Scenario 2
Only RVP ? Are you crazy, it will take a very foolish man not to have a team with Gareth Bale in it.
Verdict : Don’t even think about it !

      Scenario 3
Look at the opening fixtures, United have it a lot harder than Spurs. It will be argued that RVP performs in the big games, it will be hard to ignore Bale against weaker opponents. Dropping RVP will free up a good 4 – 6 million. That can be utilized to build a strong team especially in midfield.

Premature to still pick a squad

While I know a couple of people who have already setup for the new season, I personally feel its way to early. Is it just me or are people picking teams for an entire season, my selection is based on getting the most out of the first 7 weeks.
      1. Chelsea have a potential DGW.
      2. Besides Chec, Chelseas starting eleven is a mystery, I wouldn’t put anyone with a sure starting berth. Imagine shelling out 6M on Azpilicutea only to watch him being benched.
      3. Wayne Rooney at Chelsea, if it happens, is too hard to ignore. With a World Cup looming, Englands #1 striker will want all the game time possible.
      4. Benteke moving away from Aston Villa especially to Tottenham will make him very appealing. Considering the Bale link up and a favourable schedule.
      5. Manchester City have a brilliant start, then again other than Hart, Toure & Kompany the starting line ups are again unknown. Nasri (finally off the bench) ended last season well. Aguero, looks over priced but considering he would be their main striker 11M seemed fair enough. All that changed today with Jovetic& Negredo signing. With an easy run in stocking up on City players is a must.
      6. Manchester United, Rooneys departure will see Kagawas rise. Even if that doesn’t happen, Kagawa will still rise just a little slower than expected. A player largely overlooked this season is Wilfred Zaha @ 6.5M I think he’ll be one to watch. This seasons Michu.
      7. Cheap defenders / bench fodder : Parr & Chester @ 4M
      8. Another two largely over looked midfield options are : Bolasie ! @ 5M / Jedanik @ 4.5M, for me its def Bolasie
      9. Mirallas now classified as a midfielder ! @ 7.5 is a real steal if he can be consistent.
      10. If you give a player the #9 jersey, hes brought to score. With Suarez banned for the opening 6, I expect Iago Aspas to make a name with himself till Suarez is back in the pecking order and at 2M cheaper than Sturridge, he makes for an excellent pick !
      11. Goal Keeper : Everyone seems to be trying this rotation strategy, I think its crap and waste at least for majority of the season. I utilised it last season with great frustration. Am not saying it doesn’t work, all am saying is its not my cup of tea. What I would rather do is invest in a good goal keeper, this season with Mourinho in town looking to defend his never having lost a game at the Bridge I will take those odds and on the whole season I could expect at least 15 clean sheets. Most likey to pair him up with Given @ 4M.

Rotation between Stoke and Norwich are perfect Begovic + Ruddy sets you back @ 10.5M

Check my probable team at :

    A poem about Jerome Thomas

    Chorus:

    Oh Jerome, Jerome,

    You're so devastatingly bad,
that when watching you even Titus Bramble feels sad.
Whichever scout once said you were good was a liar,
Did you lose your first touch in a house fire?

    Chorus

You've been overvalued at four point five,
To persuade no-one to pick you I shall strive,
I watched you and thought you were some bloke who'd been plucked from the crowd,
I had such an urge to boo in a manner that was very loud.

    Chorus

Have you ever played the game?
You should have been an accountant bur somehow you've shot to fame.
I bought a programme and saw your name on the teamsheet,
It was at this point I knew we were beat.

    Chorus

You see Jerome, I don't mean to be mean,
But you're the worst player I've ever seen.
Do you seriously think you're a forward?
You should have been a lumberjack, collecting more wood.

    Chorus

Several times of paid to see you,
Several times I'd compare your performance to the contents of a loo,
All that time we wished you'd just shoot,
Coming away from matches just wanting you to be given the boot.
Coming away from matches thinking you should personally refund my ticket stub.
Coming away from matches believing my pet was a better player than you - and he's just a cub.

    Chorus

Assuming the CHE DGW goes ahead in GW1, like most I'd be wanting to max out for HUL/AVL before WCing after GW3. A big priority then, is choosing 3 players likely to start both games (otherwise there's not much point given they follow GW1 up with mun and a blank).

My current 3 of choice are Terry, Hazard & Lampard - reasons below.

All 3 offer a very good goal threat for their position, are decent value, and I think their chances of starting both is something like 80%, 80%, 60%. Lamps is the main risk, but Mourinho has a soft spot for him (and Terry), and his recent comments were very positive about Hazard too.

Lamps - guessing it's 2 from Luiz/Lamps/Ramires/Essien/Mikel, and leaving Lamps out would leave 2 too defensive minded players in the double pivot, right?

Terry - guessing it's 2 from Luiz/Ivanovic/Cahill/Terry. From memory Mourinho didn't rotate his CBs much before, so I think whichever 2 start the first game will start both. Terry being captain makes me think he's fairly safe

Hazard - some threat from Schurrle & Moses, but I think Hazard will be a big player for CHE this season.

Have I missed anything? Are there better alternatives in this CHE squad to go for?

Yes, I would swap Alcaraz for Coleman (might play as a winger)

I am not sure about Kagawa, he might have another rotten season or he might completely explode. Keeping in min Utd's first few games, I'd stick with Walcott to be safe. If you want to have an early differentiator, maybe Kagawa.

I have stopped trying to tweak the team as there will be new players which will screw up the best plans at this stage and also depending on if there will be DGW. Instead i have been looking at the players that is most likely that will be in the team regardless.

    Midfield:
Bale // I had him from the start of last season, and unfortunately took him out before he started giving some serious returns. He is usually a slow starter, but i don't think i will take chances leaving him out of the starting team.

Mirallas // Looking at the stats from last season he would be on par with Fellaini with regards to performance as he is now classified as midfielder.Considering Fellaini is/was pretty wasteful, Mirallas is the "must have" midfielder this year considering his price of 7,5 M.

Walcott or Hazard // If judging by last season only it is no doubt that Walcott is the better choice...but if you consider that Hazard has been adjusted to EPL and possible get the spot kick duty when Lampard is not playing, this is one of the hardest choices to make. I believe one of them is necessary to have in your team though. Would like to have both but will probably be too expensive.

    Forwards
Sturridge // He will be essential to have in your team first 6 GW when Suarez is not playing. Liverpool strikers (Suarez+Sturridge) were the 2 players with most chances created + goal attempts last year per game and that is unlikely to change this season. For 9M he is the best value attacker as i see it. I for one will not make compromises with Aspas.

    -------
    Bonus player:
Lukaku // To me he was the 3rd best performing striker last year, and even as a sub in some games i think he will be great value at 8M...Reluctant to put him in my starting team though, but if Chelsea have a double game in beginning he is worth a punt...unless Rooney signs though...

Maybe stating the obvious, but this should be the core of the attacking players of any team...

      Sturridge at 9m - I don't agree with ya.
I'd say Lambert at 7.5 is a better option then Liverpool. I'd prefer to go with Gerrard or Coutinho ahead of Sturridge from Liverpool for first 6 GWs.

      Bale Mirallas Walcott
      Lambert

These are must haves in this FPL

Thoughts on Santi Cazorla vs Theo Walcott?
Caz managed just 10 points more than Wally but with significantly more game time, 3:2 more game for Caz . The stats favour Wally as the best pick providing he can stay fit, but taking into account the new bonus point system Caz dominated sitting at the 3rd best bonus point getter (121 more bonus points than Wally) only beaten by Vertonghen and RVP.
At the moment I'm sticking to Wally as i dont know the true effect of this new system, but it is something to think about.

Schneiderlin did well for me last season and looking at what he would have got with the new bonus system hes looks a bargain! i think the bonuses will favour cazorla n gerrard too, not so much hazard and walcott and add to that hazards not a guaranteed starter and walcotts injury prone.

Williams (Swansea) ? Swansea have some really tough fixtures early on so i'ld steer clear, like the Schneiderlin pick as POD but he didnt do too well last year, under the new system he kill it with his bonus points (just finished reading ur post and realised you've already said this!), dont know how much effect that will have on his overall output. Noticed you've gone for a few bonus point winners: Santi, Gerrard, Berba, Williams 😉

Try posting this on a more up to date article, and you might get more feedback!
