Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anybody fancy Garvan at 5.0? Suspect Palace will attack teams more than Hull making him a better acquisition than Koren/Brady in my opinion. Plus I believe he's on penalty duty while Murray's injured.

League for dead teams - no transfers or wildcards during the season, pick your team and captains prior to gw1 then it is hands off for the rest of the season.

Avoid suspensions and injuries as best you can...

Second teams should not be entered in scout leagues etc! Just a bit of fun on the side.

The captaincy will be a pain if you get two unfortunate injuries...

I know that's what the general consensus is but, why would Martinez bring in 'his boy', a man he knows can produce from up front only to rotate him?

Not saying Jelavic et al. can't / won't get the full time job but, I think it's Kone's to lose, no?

PS. Not basing this 'theory' on football ability so as much as I'm thinking about how we show loyalty to those from 'our tribe'.

and bale to stay of course. not really IMPOSSIBLE to get Coentrao in you know without the Bale deal. he's 17m or so rated, and wants to leave as RM is looking towards the new young LB (forgot what his name was).

I guess Spurs could sign Coentrao without Bale going the other way, but I wouldn't have thought they'd splash £17m on a left back.

AVB doesn't seem to rate Assou-Ekotto, which is a shame, i've always liked him, and then there's Danny Rose, who did well at Sunderland last season.

Although considering how Spurs have plenty of good defenders, they kept relatively few clean sheets last season so there must be something missing at the back

you know what, i couldn't agree more. we have the perfect keeper. the beast Jan, and soon skipper Kaboul.

i actually like Rose tbh, but we seriously need another LB/RB for backup, right now we only have Naughton (assuming BAE goes).

still confused on what's the missing piece that resulted in less CS. maybe individual errors in each game, and defending set pieces, we were terrible at it last season.

Presumably the Spurs defence will be more used to AVB's high line next season, and Kaboul has more pace than Dawson, which will help.

His Porto defence was solid, while his Chelsea and Spurs incarnations have not been, but presumably that will come with time.

Liverpool also seem in need of a LB, and i'd be very happy with Cissokho, surprised I haven't seen Spurs linked with him, he seems available on the cheap

I'll be the first to admit that Liverpool's 3-2 win last season came very much from individual errors by Spurs players, but thats something that can be worked on.

I'm also not sure what happened to Kyle Walker last season, he didn't seem the same player as the season before, he's really got to return to his A game if he wants to be starting in the WC next summer

Did Porto kept many CS while he was in charge? agree on the high line, so many individual errors that couldn't be recovered.

Mohamed Salah of Basel's goal was clearly from a individual error let alone both of the goals during the Liverpool 3-2 win against us last season.

Littlest things like these have made us missed on the Champs league. yeah agreed, Kyle was out of his mind last season, wasn't concentrating enough, he was lost during 2nd half of the season. Maybe complacent was the answer, afterall we won against United at OT and 2 nil against former champions.

Porto conceded just 13 league goals and went the season unbeaten, and won the treble (lost 2 cup matches in 2-legged ties)

A defence like that is ridiculous, but a fair amount of that also came from the midfield setup - his 4-3-3 had very specific roles for each player, I expect a midfield three of Sandro - Dembele - Paulinho to get closer to that than he has done before.

Paulinho to take the creative Moutinho role, and should do well.

oh didn't knew he had used 4-3-3 with Porto. what i actually knew was that AVB's style is a fast pacey gameplay. same as Porto with Hulk, and even the playmaker is fast (moutinho).

i don't believe Paulinho is a creative player tho, he's a holding, box-to-box midfielder quite the same as Dembele in my eyes but just slightly better. we're still missing a total creative midfielder like Luka though..

Option B does look more template, which is what you are trying to avoid.

I have to say I find it quite refreshing that you are looking at some other names...

The only issue I have is you'll be left with Benteke or Lukaku/Lampard for GW2 and you'll have to play one at least one of them in a poor fixture, and Lukaku/Lampard might not even play so you might be forced into an early hit, especially with that blank for all of those players up next in GW3...

Wouldn't mind them against United tbh.

Lampard — Mourinho said his concern is that Lampard won't play 60 games a season, but he'll play the big games.

Lukaku — looks first choice at the moment. And he scored a hat trick against United on last day.

Benteke — he's staying without a doubt. Penalty taker and the main man at Villa.

            Probably drop Terry.

Liverpool got 11 cleansheets at home last year. Rodgers has them defending well.

I think Kolo will be first choice centre back to pair with Agger so long as he stays fit. That will be the challenge.

I'm doubling up on Liverpool with Mignolet and Kolo. I think the prices are too good to resist.

its very likely that arsenal will do well against villa at the emirates and liverpool have a great defensive record along with being Ssurridge being an sbsolute machine if hes fit.

Ah, don't like baker at all... Villa have terrible opening fixtures and he has ridiculously high ownership for some reason, which means he will likely fall like a stone in the opening weeks when people realize that..

10m is slightly too much to spend on GKs IMO, I say go with Migs and 4m or find someone to rotate with Boruc (Foster is ideal at 5m)

Don't think I'd start with RVP with so many other teams like Citeh, Liverpool and Spurs having favourable fixtures to stat with, but if you have already made that decision then good luck...

Other than than I reckon you should look to upgrade McNaughton to Collins and rotate him with Clyne...

Been mulling over getting Benteke or Silva.

I'd like to have some MCI cover, although can get Silva via horizontal trans at GW2. But Benteke looks 'fixture proof', and has a DGW at hand.

Thinking about Weimann over JRod as well.

    Thoughts?

I say go with Silva until GW4 when he's away to STK & then reassess.

ARS, CHE, LIV & Blank isn't a run of fixtures that entices me...

That's a good way of going about it zep. I guess that lets you play a normal game in FPL.

I'm intrigued with the captain change. Can we make more than one captain change in a week and count it is a transfer?

I read over those new rules, and tbh I still don't completely understand it...

The way I understand it right now, is that you can get 2 lots of captains point in any given week... but that doesn't seem right to me...

It's really confusing, hence I'm curious. How about this scenario?

            1) Captain A on Sat
            2) Use captain change to Captain B who plays on Sun
            3) Transfer B > C and captain C who plays on Mon
            4) Captain C also plays on following Sat

Does 3) count as a captain change? 3 Captains a week?

No only 2 captains a week... if you did "2" then you are no longer able to make another captain change for someone who plays on Monday...

If you didn't do "2", then you WOULD be able to do "3"...

The first scenario would see you only have one captain, since the change Cazorla would occur in the next GW, seeing as every GW in the Sky game starts at 00.01am on Saturday morning... (obviously any game will occur after that time on a Saturday, and therefore be in a new GW)

Scenario 2 is the ideal scenario whereby you would have 2 captains as they fall within the same GW...

                      Scenario 1

Not really Zep, check this out: "transfers made after the earliest kick off will start scoring from the next day. For example: If you transfer in van Persie before the earliest kick off on Saturday he will be eligible to score points immediately. If you transfer him in after the earliest kick off on Saturday, he will be eligible to score points from Sunday’s matches"

Scenario 2, would that be a transfer AND captain change though? Or only a transfer?

Ah the confusion here lies in the fact that I thought you were only "transferring the captaincy", and not the actual players themselves..

That would obviously be both a transfer and captaincy change, and while you will be able to make as many transfers as you wanted (up to 40 I guess), you would still only be able to make one captaincy change regardless...

Actually now that I've read the rules again, it makes perfect sense...

"With two lots of double points on offer, changing your captain can have obvious benefits. Choosing when and how to change it is up to you: here’s a couple of scenarios…

You have Robin Van Persie in place as captain prior to Saturday’s matches. He scores you double points on that day and, that evening you elect to change your captain to Eden Hazard – Hazard plays on Sunday and can therefore also earn you double points in the Game week. However, having made a change, you no longer have the option to change your captain for any match taking place on Monday night or later in the Game week.

You have Robin Van Persie in place as captain for Saturday’s matches. He scores you points on that day and, rather than elect to change your captain to a player in action on Sunday, you switch your captaincy to Santi Cazorla. He plays on Monday night, allowing you to score double points from his performance in addition to Van Persie’s double tally from Saturday."

But say in that first scenario

I transfer Haz (C) to Caz (C). That won't be a captain change right? Will still be a transfer.

Providing Hazard was your first captaincy option and that you had selected him as captain before the first deadline, then yes that would be absolutely fine...

                      So you're saying.....

Transferring existing captains during the gameweek counts as captain changes but transferring existing captains before the gameweek doesn't count as a change?

"but transferring existing captains before the gameweek doesn't count as a change?"

No, because that GW will have likely already ended (there aren't really that many games played after a Wed) and any change you make now will just be you preparing for the next GW...

But say in a DGW, you can potentially have 4-5 different matchdays in a GW....

So best way to optimize is to....make sure your captain can play Sun and Sat (in following GW), then use the change for another player in Sun.

Its starting to make sense but still not convinced a transfer counts as a captain change too. Appreciate it as always Zep. Hope you weren't too irritated 😉

If you are transferring out your captain, then by default the player you bring in will have the captains armband...

But why would you want to transfer out your captain (let's face it only RVP, Bale, Santi and Hazard are going to have the armband on most weeks) when you only have so many transfers to use?

And no, not irritated at all... quite the opposite actually, I too have found this quite illuminating...

Steve is all about set-pieces whilst Coutinho has more upside from playing in a more advanced role.

"A warm safe blanket & a cup of tea" v. "A wild night out, 'hoping' to bump into 'that girl' who's going to leave you smiling, sweaty & naked..."

Umm, that & Gerrard has spot kicks in his locker...

      Looks good, my thoughts:

Lampard is not likely to start both games. Guzan will not pick up many points, and will have a blank soon. In fact you have 5 DGW players - planning on WC'ing GW2/3?

First RMT of the new season!!!

What are your thoughts of this:

    -----------Mignolet
    Cole------Zaba-------Mertesacker
    Hazard--Bale----Noble--- Snodgrass
    Lukaku---Aguero----Anelka

    Subs: Garrido, Gunnarson, Diakite

    RMT Lads:

    Mignolet (Boruc)

    Cole/Zabaleta/Collins (Coleman/Clyne)
    Hazard(c)/Walcott/Bale/Mirallas (J. Thomas)
    Anelka/Lukaku/Aspas

Is it worth taking a punt on Aspas over Sturridge?? He scored 12 la liga goals with 7 assists for a pretty crappy celta vigo team last season.

Aspas is like a lot of new signings, i think he looks good but it really depends on whether he'll play consistently. I think that's what I look for what, i hate the uncertainty of rotation because my subs are always poor. Pre season is not a good judge of possible team line up. Aspas' spin control from a through ball was great. Defend and midfield seems good. Not sure on the forwards.

I've overhauled my team. I've gone for direct attacking midfielders.

      Mignolet-Daniels

I think he has a chance to score 10-14 goals. Obviously, he won't get the chances he had at Chelsea and he's probably lost a step. But he is reported to be superfit and if he gets ~2800 minutes, you would think he's a pretty good bargain at 5.5.

Last season he had the inconsistent Aguero, troublemaker Balotelli, overplayed Tevez and the underplayed Dzeko.

Now has Jovetic, Negredo, Aguero and Dzeko. All favoured by MP too. I think the first 2 are better than Balo and Tevez.

Not a big fan of having a non-playing GK (or sub of any kind) but so long as Mignolet avoids injury you are good to go. I know JRod is the preseason flavor here, but there are other options I think are better, see, e.g., Crouch (look at the guy's history in seasons with over 2000min played), Anelke (proven FF option over the years when he gets minutes), Weimann (every bit as good a second half as JRod and nailed on), Ruiz (nailed on and if healthy he will get assists/goals). I prefer Gerrard over Coutinho based on his FF history but Coutinho's probably a decent gamble. I like the rotation in back. 7.5/10.

Anyone on here actually think Suarez wants to and will go to Arsenal? Because for the sake of hell, a large proportion of Arsenal fans are so adamant they will get him. Some are planning to get 'Suarez 11' on their shirts. Some are saying his body language shows he wants Arsenal. Absolutely deluded. What a bunch of nutters.

Always linked to the biggest superstars and place a bid just under a player's value, just to get their fanbase happy. And who do they sign? The likes of Sanogo and Gervinho.

Haha is this guy for real?

Nutters? the only ones deluded are Liverpool fans who think they will actually finish above Arsenal before the start of every season. 23 and 40m for Higuain and Suarez are enough considering the circumstances

You know what? Actually forget that. Keep your focus on getting into that Thursday night Second tier european League. Whats it called again? Maybe keeping Suarez would help that, though he deserves UCL football.

Good luck fighting with Everton for 7th and 6th

While sometimes, they buy the likes of Cazorla.

Not an arsenal fan, but I do think Suarez will leave. Body language is negative and he could probably get better wages elsewhere. Don't know whether he'll go to Arsenal though. Would be stupid to buy a kit with his name until it's official. Otherwise, you're just being foolish.

For the sake of the PL, I hope he stays. Players like Thiago, Fabregas, Villa, Higuain just aren't coming to the PL. England is falling behind

With the little rant over, I think Soldado will be a great signing for Spurs. 20 goals a season guaranteed. Hats off to Levy once again if he pulls it off. Spurs fans must be loving it, especially if they hold on to Bale! Could be in for a great season.

Well, because they don't. Virtually every team keeps 4-6 home CS - even crap teams. So if you rotate H/A pretty strictly, you will get 8-12 CS a year from that position.

Nice team but for the GK situation. If Boruc loses form you are 2 transfers away from sorting it. I commented on another RMT vis-a-vis JRod, but I think there are better options, including Crouch, Anelke, or Weimann. I might swap out Luiz for Terry (I assume you are looking to lose your CHE cover in GW2) and get another 4.5 GK.
