Liverpool maintain their 100% pre-season record with Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas both amongst the goals once again. Shola Ameobi continues to find the net for Newcastle, while Martin Jol admits he’s in the market for a new forward after Fulham fall to defeat at Werder Bremen. Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho gives Fantasy managers plenty to ponder after admitting he may move Juan Mata to the right flank in the season ahead.

Thailand 0 Liverpool 3
Brendan Rodgers was able to recall Kolo Toure and Philippe Coutinho after both missed the previous match with minor knocks. The Reds lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Toure partnering Daniel Agger at centre-half, while Steven Gerrard was the most advanced central midfielder as Joe Allen sat alongside Lucas in front of the back-four. Coutinho and Fabio Borini flanked new boy Iago Aspas in the front three and the Brazilian continued his impressive pre-season form with his third goal in as many appearances after waltzing through the home side’s defence. Coutinho then turned provider for the Reds’ second, teeing up Aspas for his third pre-season strike before the latter laid on the assist for Steven Gerrard to chip home the final goal.

Rodgers made just four changes in the second period – a suggestion, perhaps, that he’s looking to implement a settled line-up with less than three weeks until the season kicks off, albeit with question marks still surrounding the future of Luis Suarez and current fitness of Daniel Sturridge. It’s four wins from four now for the Merseysiders and with a clean sheet accrued in each of those victories, Toure – at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – continues to look an enticing option, having started each of the three games he has been available for ahead of Martin Skrtel in the centre of defence.

Blackpool 0 Newcastle 1
Alan Pardew trialled a change of formation for yesterday’s narrow win at Bloomfield Road. The Magpies boss moved from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 and selected Mike Williamson alongside Steven Taylor in central defence – Fabricio Coloccini was suspended after receiving his marching orders in the previous friendly, while Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was afforded just nine minutes off the bench late on. With Moussa Sissoko fielded in central midfield, Sylvain Marveaux and Jonas Gutierrez patrolled the flanks, while Yoan Gouffran continued in his recent role up top, with Shola Amoebi also getting the nod. Ameobi was the visitors’ goal hero yet again – he volleyed home a Williamson assist to find the net for the third successive match. Pardew made just four alterations as the match progressed, though Hatem Ben Arfa and Cisse were omitted from the squad as the duo continue to build up their match-fitness.

Werder Bremen 1 Fulham 0
The Cottagers 100% pre-season record came to an end in Germany yesterday afternoon. Martin Jol opted for Kieran Richardson over John Arne Riise at left-back in a defence that also contained new boy Fernando Amorebieta. Derek Boateng and Steve Sidwell were named in central midfield, with Ashkan Dejagah and Alex Kacaniklic handed the wing roles, while Bryan Ruiz and Dimitar Berbatov were once again selected as the front two. Jol’s post-match admission that he’s on the lookout for a new striker may concern the latter’s would-be suitors, though, with a new face up front potentially forcing the Bulgarian into a more withdrawn role, while Ruiz’s versatility could see him shift to the flank. The Cottagers boss also gave an update on Kacaniklic’s injury and indicated he is looking to add to the midfield area before the campaign gets underway:

“Berbatov was good, but he can’t do everything and we needed to get in behind. We will try to get someone up front. We need a few more goals, since Clint [Dempsey] left we do not have enough goals in us, so we are working every day to get someone in. We have some high quality players in consideration and we would like another midfielder as well…Kača has made a lot of big steps and progress with us. But he had to come off with a hamstring injury. Hopefully it is not too bad, but he may be out for a couple of weeks. Mesca came on and looked good, he was probably our best player on the day even though he has only played with us twice. That was positive….Today we looked a bit rusty from the start. But I can forgive the players at this stage as we will go to Austria and work hard, train hard and we will do something in the transfer market and be totally different by the start of the season.”

In Other News
Jose Mourinho hasn’t been short of sound bites for Fantasy managers to mull over this summer and the Chelsea manager offered another intriguing insight for us to consider yesterday. Discussing Juan Mata’s role at Stamford Bridge for the season ahead, Mourinho hinted that he may be set to utilise the Spaniard on the right more often:

“I have my idea about him, about where he produces better and where he has more difficulty. We will try to help him perform better in those situations. I’ve always liked a right-sided player to be left-footed. I started with Robben and Duff, then Pandev at Inter, and Di Maria and Ozil. It’s more than a tendency. I like wingers coming in on the inside for the penetrative movement, for the pass, for the shot. And Juan is the only player we have to do that on the right. On the left we have Hazard, Victor Moses, Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle. Juan is also very comfortable playing as a No10. In between these two positions, he has a lot to give to the team.”

Having rolled out a 4-3-3 system to great effect in the 8-1 win over Indonesia All Stars last week, Mourinho clearly has a viable alternative to the 4-2-3-1 which has been Chelsea’s default formation in recent times. Mata’s role in “the hole” is perhaps not as nailed-on as it has been since his move to the Premier League – Mourinho’s failure to mention Oscar as an alternative for the wide roles suggests the Brazilian could benefit from a more central role this time out. While this may see us reassess Oscar’s potential – particularly with a double Gameweek 1 on his agenda – an occasional shift to 4-3-3 would perhaps be detrimental to his prospects, with the likes of Frank Lampard and Marco Van Ginkel fielded as the most advanced central midfielder, with Mata on the right.

My First and Last RMT folks, so have at it...

    Jussi (Boruc)

    Toure Baines Luiz (Garrido) (Collins)

    Mirallas Walcott Coutinho Hazard (Cork)

    JRod Aspas Giroud

0.5 in the bank to change Luiz to Vert in GW2 if the latter is fit...
Had Arteta in instead of Walcott and Lukaku in instead of JRod - which is better ye think? Not massively keen on having 3 Chelsea players after GW1 for a while....

I'd rather put in another Chelsea player, e.g. Mata.
Also, I'm not so sure about Aspas, admittedly because I know very little of him.
Also consider Mignolet as Liverpool def coverage over Toure.

Cheers Lad! If I had the extra mill would you choose Agger over Mignolet?
Aspas is on fire pre season, they've rolled out a 4-3-3 a lot and aspas is getting goals and assists aplenty up top - now that could change if Suarez stays but even if he does he won't be back on the radar till September.....if Aspas retains his spot he's an absolute steal

I would not go Agger over Mig, but that's not based on anything else than gut feeling.
Interesting about Aspas - I should have an eye on him.
One thing is sure, namely that some of the summer signings will be steals - guts me that I never tend to know which ones before anyone else.

Pick the one with no ownership. The more owners the more people who can/will sell and cause a drop in value.

That's probably a fair point, though it could be double-edged, given that the one with the lowest ownership needs fewer transfers out in order to drop.

      Pretty much.

You could either go for a player who is one of 2 keepers in the game and therefore 2nd choice, or go for one with low ownership so there's little chance of them dropping.

I have Price in at the moment, but Rudd is a popular one because of the red flag.

I think Silva is the least appealing of the three you named. I rate Michu and Coutinho higher. Michu has lousy fixtures, that's why he's on second place. Otherwise it would've been Michu > Coutinho > Silva. But that's just my opinion.

    Mignolet (Davis)

    Luiz Mertesacker M.Turner (Parr, Chester)

    Bale Walcott Hazard Koren (Thomas)

Seems okay-ish to me, but would appreciate any constructive feedback you gentlemen (and ladies?) have.

Yeah I only picked Davis as I was scrabbling around for an elusive 0.5m and it had to come from him at the time.

Lukaku is an option but I'd rather not end up with three Chelsea players. Having said that I was thinking of keeping both Luiz and Hazard for the season so it'd only be one to replace...

And I can only do either Lukaku or Lampard/Oscar otherwise I'd have four Chelsea. Oscar intrigues me though...

Anyone think the prices for new players, especially strikers, are a bit high this season? For example RVW (7) and Hooper (6.5), considering Remy was only 6 (I think?) to begin with last year. Is RVW really that much more of a prospect than Remy was? Anyone else remember prices for fairly proven new players that came in last year?

they've made defenders cheaper to make up for the lack of points...so I guess that's why strikers are a bit pricey, to balance things out

    Is defense rotation overrated?

I have been looking at the best suggested rotation for the start which would be EVE/NOR/SUN/STK for a 2* two-way rotation, then having Mertesacker as my regular starter. Looking at the prices this would cost me about 24.5m.

I then started looking at all the potentially good 5m to 5.5m defenders for top clubs, so in addition to Mert you have Kaboul, Coleman, Toure, Nasty etc. For less then the rotation approach I could just go with the following for 24m:-

    Mert 5.5m, Kaboul 5m, Coleman 5m (Cardiff 4m + Norwich 4.5m Turners)

Anyone else have views on this?

Rotation can work well, but it doesn't always. Last season was particularly bad, left points on bench many times by trying to punt the home adv with Bego, for eg.

Get the right pair, you could be laughing, but at £5.5m, Migs/Chesney look v.good value. In DEF, Toure, Coleman (both £5m) and Merte (£5.5m) look very good value too.

I'm expecting to play Chesney every wk (for foreseeable), plus Merte & prob Toure, with Clyne, Burner, Collins rotating for best fix.

      That's my tu'penny worth.

If Bale goes I can imagine there will be some spare cash to upgrade defense, especially if the new bonus system makes the investment more worthwhile. Not entirely sold on the UBER theory with such good options for only 0.5m more.

**REPOST** Let's start a bandwagon before the start of the season 😉

I think Mirallas is going to be this season's Fellaini...but more consistent.

    ○ Position changed by manager/FPL so better FPL returns.

    ○ Less than 10% ownership.

    ○ May have some free kick duties.

    ○ Showing form in pre-season.

    ○ IMHO in for a 150+ for this season.

He's a good player, and a good option. Wouldn't want too many having him though, as he loses his appeal as a differential. My post was slightly tongue in cheek, hopefully he does well. He only took the free kicks as Baines didn't play. Main thing is he needs to stay injury free.

See above, it was slightly tongue in cheek. I agree it's the whole point of the site. But would expect a post like this to be about someone nobody has already, say 0-1% ownership. Not someone who's already in most people's thoughts, hence not a typical bandwagon that people would start. Apologies for any offence caused.

    My defence is -

    McGregor Ruddy
    Shaw Clyne Rat MTurner Cole

I plan to play Cole (Big hitter) week in week out and rotate Clyne and Shaw with Rat and MTurner.

Now I fancy Rat over Collins, well, just because. The question is do I get Coleman or Kolo in stead of Rat and play them and the Big hitter every week with the view of dropping a mid and playing 4 at the back or do i go back to the drawing board? the rotation of Shaw Clyne / Rat MTurner is pretty good until Jan.

Also itds worth bearing in mind that historically the bigger teams are statistically more likely to concede in the early parts of the season.

    Thoughts??

That's why Cole (Cech) are the best pick as defenders for my money....I'm sure Cole will play both DGW's and the United match before the blank...even Hazard doesn't have the same level of certainty...That will take some pressure away from any transfers you need to do after GW1/2...
