Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You're good with either Whittingham or Kimbo, though I'd opt for Kimbo as his work rate is better and Whitts has a tendency to be a bit lazy for patches.

    A) Save FT, Cornelius in 4-4-2, hope for the best.
    B) Ramires>Kim, 4-5-1, £2.0 free
    C) Ramires>Rosicky, 4-5-1, £1.5 free
    D) Ramires>Jarvis, 4-5-1, £1.5 free
    E) Ramires>Paulinho, 4-5-1, £0 free

Existing attack is Soldado/Walcott/Silva/Mirallas/Nolan. I'll have Marshall in goal, so A & B would entail doubling up on Cardiff. WC during/after the break is a real possibility, so I'm only interested in the outcome of this decision for GW 3 and possibly 4.

    C) Ivan, Oscar & Benteke -> Yanga, 6.0m & RvP (-4)

    Advice please...

I am 8pts ahead in my office ML, which offers US$200 prize as manager of the month. The month of August covers GW1-3, therefore next week is the deciding week.

    Key differences:
My team: Coutinho, Miralas, Dzeko, Soldado, Giroud
His team: Cazorla, Silva, Aguero, Sturridge, J-rod

He has captained Kun in GW1-2 and my guess will do the same in GW3 vs Hull

Which option do you think it's best?

    A. Hazard to Silva (Silva price to rise, Haz to drop hence TV, also as insurance vs his team)
B Hazard to Cazorla (London derby usually high scoring, insurance vs his team)
C Soldado to Aguero (put Kun as captain, same captain as my rival)
D Hazard to 5.0 (frees up cash for RVP in GW4)

A, B, and C are definitely short-term moves, while D is a long term move (for Overall Rank) and one that I've been planning to do. Our ML gives out the same prize as (US$200) both for season winner and each monthly winners, hence winning something right after a few weeks into the season is nice to have.

    Any views guys? thanks

Definitely more weighted towards defenders this season than last.

Could just be a freaky 2 weeks though. May see how next week goes and could have to think about wildcarding, as I've set my team up to be super-heavy in midfield, and so far they have given me the lowest returns.

Last season there were 200 clean sheets out of 760 (20 teams x 38 games) - 26%. So far this season there have been 16 out of 42 - 38%. When the goals start to flow the baps will move to midfielders/forwards although not in the same way as previous seasons as the new system is more defender friendly

😐 Pity Cabral didn't play. Would've made my score 51 which looks a lot better than 49. (52 actually (cleanie) )

Want to free up money for Benteke in for JRod next week.

Also want Silva for next week!

That considered is it worth taking a hit for:

Oscar + Hazard > Ben Arfa + Silva

Havent got a reply yet so sorry for the repost

Right, sorry if I am dense here...but how did the the wave of public opinion to get RVP in for GW4 (via FTs or WC) come to be? What's the reasoning?

Is it people telling themselves it's the absolute longest they can hold out? Waiting for other budget guys to emerge in MF?

Please help, seems like a lot to potentially plan for.
