Scout Scribbles – Kompany Targets Quick Return

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany hopes to be back from injury in time for Gameweek 4. Christian Benteke, Kenwyne Jones, Hatem Ben Arfa and Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu all shine in the Capital One Cup, while Swansea’s injury woes continue ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Brom:

Kompany Could Return After International Break

Vincent Kompany is penciling in a swift return to action after picking up a groin strain in Manchester City’s 4-0 victory over Newcastle in Gameweek 1. Speaking to the club’s official website, the centre back revealed he hopes to be back after the international break – potentially putting him in contention for September 14’s clash away to Stoke City:

There is a protocol to follow with any injury and there is a time scale that goes with that. If I follow that schedule, I know when I’ll be back in a certain amount of weeks and possibly sooner.

The Scout says: Badly missed during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Cardiff, Kompany’s return simply cannot come soon enough for the light blue half of Manchester. In his absence, it remains to be seen how City’s rearguard will hold up against Hull City this weekend, though Matija Nastasic is expected to return to the XI alongside Joleon Lescott. Should Kompany’s optimism be justified, then Lescott’s run in the first team could prove short-lived – those considering Lescott as a transfer target for a Chelsea defender or Liverpool’s injured Kolo Toure this week may well be advised to look elsewhere.

Campbell’s Weekend Start Looks Secure

Having seen his side defeat City last Sunday, Malky Mackay made 11 changes as Cardiff travelled to Accrington Stanley. Despite the wholesale alterations, the visitors ran out 2-0 victors but the result was somewhat soured by another ankle injury to Andreas Cornelius after the summer signing was stretchered off just before the break.

The Scout Says: Sidelined for the season opener at West Ham with a similar complaint, the big Dane’s absence has afforded Fraizer Campbell the chance to lead the line as Mackay’s lone forward. While Cornelius was fit enough for the bench last weekend, a lack of match sharpness handed Campbell another opportunity – two goals and an assist against City has already persuaded over 92,000 FPL managers to snap him up ahead of a home clash against Everton. Although the early prognosis suggests it’s no more than a sprain, Mackay has revealed Cornelius is likely to miss the Toffees clash as he awaits further scans. Campbell’s start against Roberto Martinez’ side looks more secure than ever now, with his only real competition potentially set for another spell in the Bluebirds’ treatment room.

Benteke in the Goals Again

Aston Villa bounced back from last Saturday’s narrow home defeat by Liverpool after seeing off Rotherham 3-0 last night. Paul Lambert named a strong side (though left-back Antonio Luna was sidelined with an unspecified injury) and watched on as Christian Benteke grabbed a goal and assist, while Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor also maintained their impressive opening form with a goal and assists respectively.

The Scout Says: Having failed to find the net against Brendan Rodgers’ side and with a blank Gameweek this weekend, Benteke has seen more than 57,000 FPL managers jump ship as they freshen up their three-man frontlines for the weekend. The Belgian has quickly shown his weekend display was no more than a temporary blip and has now found the net four times in four first-team games this term – with showdowns against Newcastle, Norwich and Hull in three of the four fixtures from Gameweek 4 onwards, he looks primed for further returns. Those who shed him from their sides could quickly be ruing their decision.

Jones Powers the Potters Through

Kenwyne Jones blasted a hat-trick to ensure that Stoke overcame Capital One Cup opponents Walsall and got their name in the third round draw. Jones was one of eight changes made to the Stoke lineup following their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Break Shea and Wilson Palacios made returns from injury and illness in midfield. Oussama Assaidi was also given a 45 minute run-out in his Stoke debut following his recent loan move from Liverpool. Hughes’ praise was reserved for Jones, post-match, however…

“I’m really pleased for Kenwyne because he worked really hard in pre-season and up to now hasn’t had that many opportunities. He acquitted himself really well, put himself about and showed the energy and power that he has. He’s a great guy and we want him to be successful here. He’s got all the attributes but for whatever reason it hasn’t possibly quite happened here as he would have liked. He’s got an opportunity; we’re playing in a slightly different way now and I think that will suit him.”

The Scout Says: Jones’ goals could be timely and will undoubtedly hand Mark Hughes food for thought ahead of the trip to West Ham. Peter Crouch is yet to get off the mark this term and has just 3 goals in his last 32 appearances for the club. Hughes certainly indicates that the door is open for Jones to stake a claim, although Fantasy managers have seen the big striker spurn opportunities for a run of starts in the past. Priced at 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it remains to be seen if Jones can displace Crouch, although, in all likelihood, Hughes will be looking to strengthen up front before the transfer window closes. Elsewhere, the inclusion of Wilson Palacios indicates that he may now ready to return to the fray. He started ahead of Marc Wilson at Anfield on the opening day but was unable to take his place in the Stoke lineup. The former Spurs man could now replace Wilson in his midfield role for the West Ham trip.

Swansea’s Injury Woes Continue

Swansea will be without a quintet of key players for their second leg Europa League play off tie with Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti tonight. Captain Ashley Williams and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey are sidelined with knee injuries, while Wilfried Bony will miss out due to an ankle complaint. In addition Nathan Dyer has been unable to travel due to an ongoing hamstring problem and left back Neil Taylor faces up to six weeks out due to severe bruising and swelling to the thigh.

The Scout says: With a 5-1 lead going into the tie, Swans boss Michael Laudrup can certainly afford not to take any chances with the recovery of key players. While it may transpire that many may be nursing no more than niggles, until we hear further from Laudrup it has to be assumed the likes of Williams and Bony are injury doubts going into this weekend’s away clash with West Bromwich Albion. Bony and Shelvey’s absence places further pressure on Michu to deliver against the Baggies’ robust defence.

Deulofeu Shines On Full Everton Debut

Everton’s Spanish teenager Gerard Deulofeu scored on his first full debut as the Toffees edged past Stevenage in the Capital One Cup last night. Deulofeu, who is on loan for a year from Barcelona and scored 18 times for the Barcelona B side last season, grabbed a goal with a left foot finish in the 45th minute. He lasted the full 120 minutes of an encounter which the hosts eventually won 2-1 in extra time thanks to a goal from Marouane Fellaini, who came on in the 96th minute to replace Ross Barkley.

Manager Roberto Martinez used the encounter to rest a raft of first team players with Tony Hibbert playing at right back for 66 minutes, before being replaced by Seamus Coleman. Leighton Baines, who continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United was an unused sub. Sylvain Distin was the other substitute, coming on for Phil Jagielka in the 46th minute. Arouna Kone also played in the place of Jelavic, while both goals were assisted by Steven Naismith.

The Scout Says: Ross Barkley’s Fantasy owners will be hoping his 96 minute stint doesn’t raise any question marks as to whether he will start against Cardiff at the weekend, though Darron Gibson’s continued absence through injury is likely to see him retain his berth against the Bluebirds. In attack Kone hardly put forward a good case to replace Nikica Jelavic as Everton’s centre forward, instead it was Deulofeu who emerged as the standout player in this largely second string side. Although Martinez has said the Spanish winger is unlikely to feature regularly in the first team until 2014, the teenager offered a timely reminder of his talents should Kevin Mirallas continue to misfire. Naismith’s pair of assists, albeit against lower league opposition, will also have been noted by Martinez should he look to reshuffle his first team options.

Hatem Ben Arfa Key To Newcastle Victory

Hatem Ben Arfa grabbed a pair of assists as Newcastle left it late to see off Morecambe in their Capital One Cup tie last night. After being brought on for Yoan Gouffran in the 71st minute Ben Arfa set up Shola Ameobi’s right foot finish and then turned provider again for Sammy Ameobi’s goal in the last 10 minutes of the match. Among Newcastle’s first teamers, Tim Krul was given the night off, David Santon was an unused sub, while Mouusa Sissoko came on for the last few minutes to replace Sylvain Marveaux.

The Scout Says: Before the match manager Alan Pardew said the tie was a chance for this squad players to show him they should be included in his first team thoughts. The failure of players such as Gouffran, Haris Vuckic and Marveuax to break down Morecambe will hardly have impressed him. Ben Arfa will be in buoyant mood after effectively winning the match for Newcastle and may arrive on Fantasy radars ahead of the Magpies’ home game with Fulham this weekend.

I doubt he'll start this weekend. HBA looks to be the best bet for this weekend if you are looking to invest in Newcastle. Personally I'm waiting to see how Remy fits in. He was a great pick for QPR and could be good for Newcastle too.

Bryan Oviedo is the current backup. £4.4m mid would be reverse OOP in a 4-4-2 but possible time as a wingback.

No clue really. Oviedo has had hardly any first team gametime but he's very similar to Baines in that he is comfortable up and down the entire left wing. Obviously he's not in Leighton's league for chance creation but he can't be any worse defensively 🙂

Really? That's a damn shame. I seem to remember he cost £5m, which Everton can't exactly afford to throw away on flops, especially if he's the only cover for Baines.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

What plans do you have for your team during the international break?

Are you saving a transfer in case of injuries? Are you wildcarding to freshen up your side or take advantage of price rises? Or are you forgetting about your team for a while and just hoping your players stay injury free?

Wildcard definitely. Why...? Is it too early? Long post alert upcoming 😉

Its not early. Lets say a man (I am not gonna discover who 😉 ) made an experiment last year. Took 2 teams. The same skill, the same manager, the same luck probably. He was testing the theory of early WC. First team made WC GW 3 and the second one made it later GW 7 or 8 I don't remember. Team one got Bale Suarez Fellaini Michu all cheap and never looked back. Top 10 K was the easiest thing to achieve.

Team 2 struggled all the way even made a 24pt hit one time. Trying with differentials and playing risky. Getting all the players later or being reluctant to pay that much for them. WC early is the real deal, It has never been the opposite, My best year I played it within the I. Break. That is the real time most probably. WC is overrated anyway. You could end up with worse team a lot of times. Do you know how much times the WC team has scored badly than the previous time? You would be surprised how many times.

WC is all about timing and I am speaking abot last 5 - 6 years. Always the early WC was the real deal. Everytime the winner WC early. Also someone posted this few hears ago. From top 10, 8 managers played the WC early or 16 from 20.

Timing it is but now is the timing. Utd fixtures turns around. Che worsens (we are all stocked up), Villa too. The transfer deadline is closed (Suarez, Rooney, Bale), a lot of injuries happen when players play for national teams etc...

I tried to see what is there on offer, I made 32 pt hit. Well if that isn't a WC what is it...? Later when we all know who the keepers are what is benefit on playing WC. Fix small things now or than,,?...? Nooooo, sorry for saying but saving WC for black days is amateurs way of thinking.

What do we need to know in order to wait..? We know almost everything. If some players emerges now or than there are the transfers. This is the time to prepare yourself and react in later phase. If you react at this time always you will be one or 2 week behind and lose and miss on all big hauls. last year I transferred in all the hack trick players one week too late.

To conclude that we know all we need to know:
      - There will be more bonuses per game, lets say 10 in average, not 6 like before,
      - CB are good for BP,
      - Wingers and full backs loose potential for BP.
      - Passing is everything,
      - Attacking potential in midfield/ at the back means less BP
      - There are tones of mid price strikers to choose from,
      - RVP or no RVP is the decision,
      - No cheap strikers but plenty of 5m midfielders,
      - 1 or maybe 2 5m midfielders for me,
      - The teams for potential of defense already spotted on,
      - The attacking teams already spot on,
      - The no go teams (New) already spotted on,

What else do we need mate..? Of course with every +GW we learn more but nothing crucial. If we wait all the time we should plat in GW 37.

      Cheers

I usually also wildcard during this break too. But every year I like to try something different. Last year it was to focus more on building team value. this year it is to preserve my wildcard for the flurry of second half of the season double gameweeks. Also I quite like my team and am still undecided about RVP.

Very persuasive. In complete limbo at the moment to be honest, but slightly leaning towards WC now ive read this.

Got 3 or 4 pieces of deadwood and already losing out on Silva price rise, which is annoying because he's a season keeper in my eyes. These reasons suggest a WC is in order.

On the other hand, got enough in the bank already to do Dzeko->RVP without a hit so can perhaps fix the broken parts of my team + add Silva with FTs.

Im still not convinced that anyone knows the optimum balance for a team though in the light of the new BPS.

Another thing that'd tempt me to wait is if this year's Michu's still havent announced themselves

I'm now wildcarding, happy with my team at the moment, and I saved my WC until the last few weeks last season, just making minor tweaks at the start, and ended up top 300, so I'm using the same strategy again. I think having a WC in hand at the end trumps the early price rises for me.

Planning to WC, but will see what happens at the weekend. I regretted not doing it on the equivalent week last season - saving for the end of season DGW gained me about 6 pts. I believe that it'll be the biggest WC week outside of January so if I don't WC here, a lot of players prices will put them out of reach - and I don't want to be playing catch-up again. Of course, if it looks like I already have the players that people will be bringing in (and won't really know that until the weekend) then this will clearly change things. But as it stands I'm preparing for some transfers.

Had originally planned GW4 as 'get RVP week.' Not now. Assuming Rooney stays, I'll be looking to get him and Rio / Vidic in

Whether I WC depends on the transfer window.

For example, Moses > Liverpool, would be excellent , assuming he would play on the right of a front three
A few transfers of those ilk and I'll be very tempted to WC

Intended keeping for late in the season. Team pretty decimated at the moment, so thinking of using it next week.

Far behind at the moment, so don't want to keep losing ground. How many points do you think a WC is worth late season?

I'm still undecided. It'll have to be for a hit if I do, but I'll be captaining him and its long term so I don't mind spending the pts.

At the moment though I plan to go without. Soldado, Sturridge, Lambert, Benteke, Giroud all have the form and fixtures to match him and allow me to use that extra cash in defence and mid.

I think WC is less crucial with the slower price rices. There is more time to build a team as it won't get out of reach like it used to. I say be patient... you never know whet the fixture congestion or christmas madness may bring in terms of DGW's.

Willis, these short posts saying someone will not start (eg your Ageuro and Lampard ones) with no facts or analysis to back them up are starting to annoy people. I'm getting lots of abuse reports about them.

If you are to make these statements at least back it up with some kind of discussion. Will he not start because of European commitments perhaps? Will it be because Palace is an easy fixture and its a chance to rest him?

I decided that a 5.0 rotating and RVP (C) most weeks, would score more than Hazard and a 8.0 forward.
Still have him paired with Soldado and Sturridge up top
I took a while to come around to it, but my team still looks quite good and the captaincy choice will save me regularly, I'd hope

Its automotically filtered out for good reason. Its often used in very poor taste terms of saying such and such a team will XXXX such and such a team. Also if a player is accused of something or facing charges for something that is a legal world we really don't want to get into. Best to stick to fantasy football. If it is likely to effect his pitch time etc, just say because he's due in court. No need to go into details especially on such a sensitive issue as this.

That word does get used by some people to describe football games - e.g. Walcott will r**e Danny Rose. It has caused a lot of trouble in the past because many people think it is extremely offensive and callous to use that word that way. Others think that anything that makes them laugh is acceptable.

Did the same, brought in Wolfswinkel for Benteke and will do it vice versa. Also eyeing G-Rod and Stu, but have Wally and Cout, so I'd prefer to keep them instead of changing my whole team. Not sure how I'd do it with a WC now, though.

HBA's performance is being a bit exaggerated - neither goal was put on a plate. The first was played into Shola's feet with his back to goal 20 yards out, the second was a decent ball to Sammy with the defence stretched but he was 30+ yards out and still had a lot to do to score. Both valid assists in FPL terms but they weren't exactly passes which result in goals on a regular basis.

Yep, if Pardew's idea was to demonstrate to them upstairs that we have zero squad depth and desperately need reinforcements he played a blinding hand.

I suspect Morecambe were playing above themselves to some extent but even so it was shocking how little quality we had on display.

I wouldn't - let's say even if Chester gets you a big fat 0 or -1 vs City, if you did take a hit to get Toure out the other defender would need a CS to make it worth it, anything less and you are still worse off than a Chester -1 score.

Quick question - If a player rises in value, can you spend it all or not? for example, if Silva rises to 9.5, could you transfer in a player worth 9.5 as well?

From the price you bought them at:
0.1 rise - you get nothing
      0.2 rise - you get 0.1
      0.3 rise - you get 0.1
      0.4 rise - you get 0.2
      0.5 rise - you get 0.2
      etc

All depends on how much profit you've made on the player. You get 50% of the profit, always rounded down by the 0.1m

ie. if you bought Silva at 9.2, and he rises to 9.3, there is 0.1m profit. 50% of that is 0.05, so they round it down, so you can sell him at 9.2m.

If he rises again to 9.4m then you have a profit of 0.2m. 50% of that is 0.1m so you can sell him for 9.3m

Looks like Eto signing is imminent.

Chelsea are set to sign Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala on a free transfer.

Just thought you'd like to know this. Just got off the phone with Roberto Martinez and he said that Barkley will start, be withdrawn at the 61 minute mark with a clean sheet and goal to be replaced by Gibson. Gibson will be terrible but will permanently replace Barkley who will see 20 minute sub appearances for the rest of the season.

    Ah Roberto... so calculated!!

"Last season I was asked to change positions for the benefit of the team even though I had just scored 24 goals.

"The main objective was to finish top 10 in the Premier League and I followed my instructions to the best of my ability as the club always comes first. As a result even though I was injured for three months no other player made more assists than me and no other winger scored more goals than me.

Fair play, I agree with his words
