Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

        He already has Brady.

Brady and Redmond rotate quite nicely.

I wouldn't touch Nani with a bargepole at the moment. Even if he gets a few starts, he's gotta show some hint that he's somewhere near the player he was. Don't go for him just for "cover".

      Nice work Bemba

I've not got RVP, simply because i don't like the look of the rest of my team with him in. Hoping Lampard/Coutinho firing, and Benteke being a successful captain punt will negate the damage done by rvp this gw. After that, i'll be much more comfortable not having him.

It's just statistics based really for those interested in his record as I know quite a few people are interested in records v previous clubs etc so I thought this would be useful to those people. His record recently v promoted clubs is good in that he has scored v one of his last 3 seasons (either home and away).

As I said, every game is different so it's hard to say what will happen let's be honest but if you go by these stats and history of last 3 seasons rvp has to be the best pick this gw (although that's probably recognisable the stats back it up)

Right -- so we need to then look at overall oppt stats vs relegated oppt stats for his goals:

6 in 6 each season vs relegated oppts, nice tidy goal/game
        20 in ? (28-30 starts) vs nonrelegated oppts 0.65-0.7/game for 12-13
        24 in ? (28-30 starts) vs nonrelegated oppts 0.8-0.85/game in 11-12

Would have to crunch many more players' stats to put it into larger perspective, but he clearly is more likely than usual to score this weekend.

NonRVP owner, with all the same reasons as Demi (right down to Lamps/Cout and Benteke c)

Never. Why does a player need to be rested one month into a new season? Moyes is desperate for a first home win against a tricky Palace side. Why would he risk not playing his strongest side and put pressure on himself? RVP gets rested for the FA cup, League cup and when they have qualified from the CL group and the remaining games are meaningless. Palace at home after having lost to Liverpool already is a very very important fixture and one that Moyes won't risk being made to look stupid for by benching RVP.

He is Tottenham's captain, I would like to think he is ok.
Vert has played LB a bit so far, I think Dawson will be the English leader.

The fixtures are waaay against me. But my gut tells me to stick with the first one.

Since it's a little slow, thought I'd try and get some ideas on this current WC draft.

    Mignolet / Etheridge
    Mertesacker / Chester / Turner / Coleman / Ward
    Brady / Walcott / Lampard / Lamela / Ward-Prowse
Giroud / van Persie / Benteke

    FT, £0.2m in the bank.

Not keen on etheridge. Behind steklenberg and stockdale in the pecking order. Would go for coutinho over lamela personally. Moving to the hole will get coutinho involved more now moses can go on left wing

Coutinho frustrated me enough in the first three weeks, looking for a change of pace...maybe go for Michu as well.

If he doesn't play then we find a replacement... Easy.
Just like any other 'heavy-hitter' in our squad; he's fixture proof.
Also, saves us .5mil to use else where in our squad to boot.

Backup goalkeeper could change to Harper or Cardiff GK depending on injury update.

Thanks, given Coleman's starts & stats, I am keen on keeping him for a bit and see if he can keep it up. Worried about Dawson's place given the new Romanian bloke and Kaboul lurking in the background. Would like to get my defense as nailed on as possible as to not waste future transfers.

I hate wasted transfers, but I would like to think Dawson the club captain would be ok.
I have Coleman but am concerned over his fixtures.

So, switching between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 depending on fixtures ? How about some Man City - maybe Silva for Walcott or Negredo for Benteke ? Rotating Chester/Ward/Turner would make me a bit nervous.

Hi all. My current team is:

    Migs
    Coleman Shaw Turner Chester Brayford
    Coutinho Silva Walcott Mirallas Williams
    Sturridge Soldado Lambert

    1 FT, £2.9m in bank

I have potential issues with Silva/Sturridge/Walcott and a serious issue with Williams (although he was only bench fodder)

My initial plans had been to save some money and do Lambert to RVP.
I was thinking Silva and Lambert out for RVP and Brady. However, I am still not sure whether RVP is the right move. Palace is a great fixture and after Man City he also has a great run. Saying that he does leave me with an 'unbalanced' team.

Basically... Any advice that anyone can give is massively appreciated??? Not necessarily about RVP or not

I like waiting to see how players do, but that's when everyone else gets them.
A punt is what can get you ahead, it will rarely do a lot of damage.
Soldado has great fixtures but would prefer the best and Spurs coverage.
