Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

I'd be weary of Paulinho and Ward Prowse. The former will be deeper now that Spurs have their new attacking players and WP will be rotated. The rest are fine although I don't think Collocini is worth 5m.

This season there is a Power 5 again emerging BUT unfortunately it's for the 3 Forward slots. So it's pot luck it would seem if you have the right 3 for the right GW's.

Not exactly pot luck though. Right now, weirdly, they all have pretty good fixtures, but there will be times (providing they all do well) when fixtures will rule. In RVP's case, when he doesn't have a lot of good games (i.e. standout captaincy options) he will be the first guy to be dropped.

the thing to do is try to find the best midfield from those teams, as there are options in midfield that are just as good e.g theo instead of Giroud... Cant have em all, unless your Ash Ketchum.

Sturr, Benteke and Soldado for me

Will transfer out Soldado for Rooney if a UTD midfielder (kaga/nani) doesn't come good

Soldado has bagged two penalties and didn't do much in any of the three games aside that particularly against Arsenal. Wouldn't be calling him a power player just yet.

I agree with big fudge, especially re midfield.

Yes there are not many midfielders doing great, so a lot of options are questionable. Walcott needs to be the first name on the sheet though IMO.

Why JWP? I think you'll get yourself into trouble once Ramirez takes over for him.

If you find someone else than JWP, I like B a lot. I got the same triple-combo-Arsenal setup, think it'll work more than nicely for the coming fixtures.

What do you guys think of this WC team?

    Mignolet--Lewis

    Coleman--Ward--Koscielny--Shaw--Chester

    Walcott--B.Arfa--Lampard--Hernandez--Ward-Prowse

    Benteke--RVP--Sturridge

Dribbler (I think) made quite a persuasive argument for Boruc/Sakho over Migs/Shaw a few pages back - check that out and you might be able to increase that 0.2 enough to get an upgrade somewhere.

        haha just read this:

        boruc+sakho is better than mignolet+shaw

if (a) you think that all players are equally nailed-on and if (b) you think sakho and shaw will get equal attacking points and bonus (or you can't tell who will get more)

because boruc will get more save points than mignolet

both combinations get the same for clean sheets and points deducted for losing 2 goals

in a nutshell the cheap keeper+expensive defender beats the expensive keeper+cheap defender

I would disagree slightly (although it only adds to your argument) - because Liverpool would seem more likely to get a CS, and central defenders are more likely to get bonus, the Boruc/Sakho combination should (in theory) be more likely to be better for both save points AND bps.

New Spurs signing Vlad Chiricheş had an awful match last night for Romania against Turkey and is being slaughtered in the Romanian press today for his role in the first Turkish goal (see video) and poor placement throughout the game.

Chiricheş is still very inconsistent, with a lot of talent, but a major propensity for errors.

Due to the forward being able to head the ball practically unchallenged? Looks like both defenders thought the other had it. Lack of communication by the looks of it.

I'm using Nani as a differential gamble. If it doesn't pay off so be it. If it does...great.

Risk/reward. If he starts against CPL there is goals and assists in him. (Read somewhere that since Ronaldo left united he has the most assists in the league).

And without RVP could be good United cover as mentioned. There are straws being clutched but if considered a punt, and the rest of your team is solid, I'm gambling on it.

I don't really see the logic in this. There are plenty of players who are guaranteed to start who also have goals and assists in them and who doesn't have the risk of losing their place anytime down the GWs.

Love the firepower of a nice fat Soldado, Sturridge, Benteke line.

But if Sturridge looks like he won't play then I have no problem taking a hit for Giroud. And that line becomes even more sexy at this moment tbh. Nailed on, in form, bad ass talisman forwards.

    Boruc 4.0
    Zab/Colman/Toure
    Wally/Couts/Nolan/Silva
    Tekkers/Giroud/Lambert

    Subs: Chester/Rav Morrison/Ward

Looking at Lambert to Soldado as the FT but will have to see how the PC's go re injury news.
