It turns out the rumours were true, then. Robin Van Persie is out of this afternoon’s Manchester derby at the Etihad due to a groin strain, with Wayne Rooney partnered by the fit-again Danny Welbeck up top for David Moyes’ side.

The news is set to have a significant effect on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), where the Dutchman was the most captained player this Gameweek – all the more so given that Villa’s Christian Benteke was the most vice-captained, before a hip injury forced him off at Carrow Road with a one-point return. Van Persie owners will be somewhat relieved that his manager reckons he could be back for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup clash against Liverpool, describing the injury as “nothing serious”.

The United boss makes two other changes for this afternoon’s clash from the side that saw off Palace in the previous Gameweek, bringing in Chris Smalling and Marouane Fellaini for Fabio and Anderson.

Manuel Pellegrini makes four alterations from City’s last league match. Vincent Kompany, Fernandinho, Sergio Aguero and Jesus Navas all return as Javi Garcia, James Milner, Stevan Jovetic and Jack Rodwell drop out. Micah Richards is on the bench after a hamstring injury, though there’s still no place for David Silva.

In this afternoon’s other match, Craig Bellamy and David Marshall return for Cardiff as Malky Mackay’s side attempt to extend their unbeaten run to four games. Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas makes just a single alteration for the visitors – Kyle Naughton comes in at left-back for the stricken Danny Rose, who has failed to recover from the ankle injury sustained against Tromso in Thursday’s Europa League match.

Our Dugout Discussion Chatroom remains open for those looking for some real-time banter on this afternoon’s turn of events.

    I can see a few people bringing in Suarez already - I feel he will come straight back into a side thats lacked a bit if goalthreat in the last home game and he has good fixtures to follow. if you had the choice would you have sturridge or suarez?

    Mignolet, Given
    Coleman, Zabaleta, Collins, Shaw, Ward
    Ozil, Ben Arfa, Eriksen, Brady, Parker
    Benteke, Soldado, Giroud

    1 FT...4.1m in bank

    A) Soldado -> Rooney & Benteke -> Suarez for -4

    B) Soldado -> Rooney & HBA -> Michu

    C) Soldado -> Suarez & HBA -> Michu

    or any other suggestions

      A because transferring out HBA as a medium value mid who is perhaps one of only 2 players that can keep newcastle up this season is a mistake - if he isnt injured he's always a goal threat and no risk of rotation.

      I'd get rooney + suarez and michu if you can - perhaps spread it out over 2 GW's. Swansea have arsenal next weel where as suarez has sunderland who are terrible atm and rooney has WBA at home.

    It's funny how quickly people change their minds...just a few days ago Giroud was branded 'essential', one blank and suddenly people wonder whether they should get rid.

    Falling Stars----Update

    An update for those who have been following my falling stars posts every Thursday....and for those who are unfamiliar...It's a fictitous squad made up of fifteen random fallers and crocs (as per a normal squad) and all of whom are cheaper than their opening GW value for a host of reasons...The squad is collectively cheaper than the original 100 mill and acts as an antidote for the knee jerk inwards of last weeks heroes and the daily sweat over Totalfpl daily risers...The squad is a balance of ready to go players and injured/suspended player for the short or long term watchlist

    My choices of last weeks forgotten unfashionable rabble who were actually able to play (now this weeks must haves) and the points they achieved for this GW...

    Chech....6pts

    Kompany..2pts
    Williams...9pts
    Clyne....7pts

    Michu...11pts
    Sessegnon...8pts
    Mirallas....5pts
    Moses...2pts

    Remy...17pts

    BOOM !!.... 67 pts pre (c) choice....

    Plenty of food for thought as we contemplate jumping on this weeks bandwagons....

    As always...Keep watching the fallers as well as the risers...
