Christian Benteke is ruled out for over a month by Paul Lambert. Jermain Defoe scores twice as Spurs ease past Villa. Gary Hooper and Stevan Jovetic also bag braces for Norwich and City respectively, Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent end Everton’s unbeaten run, Ramires limps out of Chelsea’s win at Swindon, while Ravel Morrison nets again as West Ham edge out Cardiff:

Benteke Sidelined For Villa

Paul Lambert has confirmed Christian Benteke will miss up to six weeks of action due to the hip problem picked up in Saturday’s win at Norwich. The Villa boss was asked whether the Belgian would require surgery and went on to say:

“It’s just a muscle injury. It’s nothing like that. It’s not too severe. We will try to get him back as quick as possible. It’s not as bad as we feared it was going to be. It’s maybe four, five, six weeks or so. You have that international break which certainly helps us. But he’s feeling a lot better to be fair. We will have to wait and see. We spoke to the medical people before and they give the best and worst case scenarios. You are never quite sure until you hear from the professor to find out how it is.”

The Scout Says: For Benteke owners, the decision to sell is now a straightforward one, with Lambert quickly clearing up the issue four days ahead of the weekend Fantasy deadline. Given that Villa now have City, Spurs and Everton in the next four, last weekend’s replacement Libor Kozak is likely to remain firmly off Fantasy radars, with Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez all receiving significant investment in recent days. Benteke’s injury merely compounds the frustration of many Fantasy managers as yet another popular figure bites the dust – Philippe Coutinho and Theo Walcott have both been sidelined in recent days and with Robin Van Persie remaining a doubt, Fantasy plans are being quickly restructured, with many managers resorting to taking points hits in order to patch up threadbare squads.

Defoe at the Double

Having grabbed a couple of goals in last Thursday’s Europa League victory over Tromso, Jermain Defoe repeated the feat again yesterday as Spurs battered Villa 4-0. Jan Vertonghen, Paulinho and Kyle Walker were the only players retained from the side that edged past Cardiff on Sunday, with new boys Erik Lamela and Vlad Chiriches amongst the starting line-up. Paulinho was on the scoresheet again, as he continued the scoring form that saw him notch a late winner against Malky Mackay’s side, while Nacer Chadli returned from injury to find the net for the first time since joining up this summer.

After the game, Defoe’s deadly eye for goal was acknowledged by his manager:

“He is doing extremely well, ticking all the right boxes. It was once again a great performance – two goals, one assist. Defoe is making things available for the team. You have to give him credit for what he has done here.”

The Scout Says: While Defoe’s form is certainly giving Andre Villas-Boas plenty to ponder, it would still be a real surprise if he managed to oust Roberto Soldado as Spurs main forward. With Emmanuel Adebayor still training with the development squad, Defoe is benefitting from a busy schedule and is earning plenty game time in cup competitions, affording Soldado a break in between league games. The Spaniard has been subject to plenty sales due to the fact that he has failed to find the net in open play yet but he’s offered a substantial threat over the first five Gameweeks, suggesting his owners’ patience could soon be rewarded.

Five-Star City Hammer Latics

Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko helped steer City to a home hammering of Wigan as Manuel Pellegrini’s side eased into the fourth round. The league’s top scorers demonstrated their attacking prowess under the Chilean as Jovetic bagged a brace and Dzeko grabbed a goal, while Yaya Toure once again highlighted his free-kick prowess by climbing off the bench to fire home his third set-piece of the season. Gael Clichy and Micah Richards returned from injury to start in the full-back positions for the home side.

The Scout Says: While the performance highlighted City’s strength in depth, the line-up perhaps hinted more towards the first-team pecking order under Pellegrini. The Chilean made eight changes from the side that hammered United and, significantly, gave Sergio Aguero the night off entirely – an indication of just how crucial the Argentine is to his prospects of league success. Jovetic and Dzeko may have caught the headlines but, with Alvaro Negredo afforded a brief 11-minute run out, it seems more likely that he will also return for Saturday’s trip to Villa alongside Aguero as City look to register their first away win of the season.

Ramires Worry for Blues

Jose Mourinho rolled out 10 changes for Chelsea’s trip to Swindon and saw Fernando Torres chip in with a goal and assist in the 2-0 win. Juan Mata, Kevin De Bruyne and Willian were handed the roles in the attacking midfield three, with the former supplying the assist for Torres’ strike, though the visitors will be concerned after suffering a couple of injuries to central midfielders during the game. Marco Van Ginkel was subbed off after 10 minutes with a potentially serious knee injury, while Ramires, his replacement, was also withdrawn after finding the net for the Blues’ second.

After the game, Chelsea’s assistant manager Steve Holland gave an update on the Brazilian:

“Ramires had to go off with a muscular injury at the top of his hip which was causing him more discomfort as he tried to run it off. He’ll be a major doubt for Saturday at Tottenham, not out for sure yet, but a major doubt.”

The Scout Says: One of only three outfield players to have played every minute of the season so far under Mourinho, Ramires’ potential absence would be a real loss for the Spurs clash. Perhaps more significantly, though, it boosts Frank Lampard’s chances of returning to the starting line-up at the Lane – the veteran has been utilised as a late sub in the last two Gameweeks but was rested for last night’s match and looks in line for a recall to the first XI.

Hooper the Canaries Hero

Gary Hooper made a statement of intent upon his first start of the season for Norwich last night. Fully recovered from the shin injury picked up towards the end of the pre-season program, the former Celtic man scored twice as Norwich sealed a 3-2 win at Watford after extra-time. After the match, Chris Hughton was delighted with his forward’s contribution and level of fitness, after he only returned to action as a second-half sub last weekend:

“He is a finisher. I’m probably as delighted that he has got 120 minutes under his belt than I am with the goals. He is used to scoring but with all strikers it is about the service they get and showing a little bit of quality when they can. Both goals showed great movement, a super ball from Leroy Fer for the third. Even in that second half of extra time I was looking at how he was running and he was fine.”

The Scout Says: With Ricky Van Wolfswinkel missing out due to a knock last night, Hooper has certainly staked a claim for a role in the starting XI at Stoke this weekend. Hughton’s side have failed to score on the road so far this season and the availability of Hooper could see him revert to a front two in order to boost the Canaries goal power against a Potters side that kept out City in their last home game. Coming in at 6.3 in FPL, Hooper is a budget-friendly option but with games against Chelsea, Arsenal and City in the next five, many will be giving Hughton’s side a wide berth until the schedule smiles a little kinder.

Berbatov and Bent Steer Fulham Through

Dimitar Berbatov recovered from a hamstring problem to help Fulham end a much-changed Everton’s unbeaten start to the season. The Bulgarian was fielded as the lone forward, with Pajtim Kasami tucking in behind, but moved back to the role in “the hole” to accommodate substitute Darren Bent – the latter was only on the pitch for three minutes before he grabbed the hosts’ winner and hand Martin Jol’s men a morale boost, after a run of three losses and a draw in the last four league games.

The Scout Says: With their two main forward now firing, the Cottagers could be poised to take advantage of one of the kindest schedules around. Fulham now entertain Cardiff and Stoke before travelling to Palace in the next three – with Bryan Ruiz possibly fit for the weekend, Jol’s side could be set to turn the corner and offer us some decent mid-price options over the short-term; Bent remains at 6.5 in FPL, while Berbatov has now dropped down to 7.2.

Morrison Notches Again for Hammers

Ravel Morrison continued his recent form by grabbing a goal after just 20 seconds in West Ham’s home win over Cardiff. The youngster – who also found the net in Saturday’s home loss to Everton – has now scored three times this term and is demonstrating an eye for goal that has been somewhat lacking in the majority of his Hammers team-mates.

The Scout Says: Our pre-season expectations were high after Morrison racked up the goals over the summer but he was immediately dropped to the bench as Sam Allardyce opted for either Joe Cole or Stewart Downing ahead of the former United player. Injuries to the latter two have meant Morrison has been handed a chance to impress and he has more than delivered, suggesting he could be worthy of a regular role under Allardyce – at 4.4 in FPL he’s an enticing option but with Cole and Downing edging towards fitness, there’s no doubt his acquisition won’t come without risk.

    I don't understand this watchlist.

If Ozil is A vs, and Eriksen is B vs the why is Eriksen above him?

Plenty of other factors, like value and fixtures. In this case I guess value is the keyword.

Surely Suarez can't just come in and play the full 90 mins?
He has missed the end of last season and the first 5 weeks of the season.

The old pros say you need a few games to get up to match fitness.
And (like Bale) the threat of niggling injuries is there until you are back to full strength.

He will start every game he has been doing high intensity training to get him up to speed.. Maybe 70mins against United and then full pelt from there on... He has played full games recently for the national team and scored a few even though ""you need a few games to get up to match fitness""..!

Yep, although his short and long term probabilities will drop a little as the threat from Defoe builds - that might reduce him a bit. Even so - he's a lone striker in an attack creating more opportunities than any other team in the league. I do think those shedding Soldado are taking a risk. He's going to have to be the biggest flop in Premier League memory if he doesn't click soon.

Lots of folks taking hits at the moment - how do people judge whether they think a hit is worthwhile or not? Do you look at the next game and decide whether Player A will outscore Player B by at least 4 points or do you look longer term than that? If so, how long? Are there any rules you apply such as a hit is always worth it to get rid of an injured player/never worth it for a defender, etc? Are you driven by price rises/falls? I really struggle to assess whether I think something is worth a hit so I'd appreciate any views 🙂

(I won't ask how people judge the success or failure of a hit in retrospect - lots of self justification goes on there!)

For me the transfer is worth it if in the next 3 or so GW your new player scored better than the old one, but the hit has to be taken in a GW where the new player outscores the old one by 4...otherwise you should have waited for a GW when that would happen.

I judge whether a hit is worthwhile by whether it makes me happy for at least 5 minutes afterwards. Anything else is just gravy.

It's tough to judge... statistically, point-wise, it's very hard to justify a hit if you have 11 starting players. I don't like to take a hit unless I am struggling to field 11 and the player I am taking out is out for a longer time. The price of the player I'd be benching also factors in, for instance it's worse to be without RVP than Barkley.

Yup, pretty much agree with this. I'm taking a hit on Benteke + Wally -> Rooney + Michu this week because both of those guys will be out for a few GWs, and I believe both Rooney and Michu can do really well this GW (I'm giving Rooney the armband, no brainer really).

My philosophy is to almost never take hits. The only time I've done so this season is when I subbed in the wrong player while drunk...

I do a hit if i want someone in my team and no frees left. Cant wait 3 weeks to make 3 transfers for example. Price rises & falls help to push the button of course.

I never think a points hit in terms of just one week. I only take them to get in a player I want long term and preferable want to captain.

You have to look at a points hit in terms of a few weeks. For example you could get a striker in that scores a brace and the one you transferred out only gets 2pts....but perhaps that new player was more expensive, which prevents you in two weeks time getting another player in who scores a hattrick...there are so many permutations. The key is though is the new player better than the one you kicked out. If yes then 4pts is a very small price to pay.

Why does the 4 points have to be a price? You just hold off until you know the incoming player will score 4 more than the outgoing player. I've been taking tons of hits so far (-16 in one GW) and they've been paying off fantastically because I'm not afraid to make a jump when the incoming player seems to have far better form + a better fixture than the outgoing one.

It has for the most part unless something really unlucky happens. My lowest point last season was Gervinho & Gibbs in for Morrison & Someone. Both Arsenal players got late injuries in the week and Morrison popped up with a goal. This season I've had around an 80%+ success rate on hits and transfers overall I reckon.

In my experience, especially looking over Full Jonty teams the optimum amount of hits each season is around the 10 mark. A few more is ok, but lots of hits rarely works. I noticed that 249,653th is your highest final season rank in the last three years. I don't mean to flag that up to be mean, so don't take it the wrong way, but more that it perhaps indicates that many hits do not work by the time you get to gwk 38.

Having said that taking lots of hits is more fun, so stick with it if it makes it more enjoyable for you.

When we get the full jonty up and running again on the podcast you should apply..I'm sure Mark and Granville would like to get their teeth into your hit strategy.

My low rank is a bit deceiving here in the sense that I'm generally a rubbish player with awful luck and even worse captain choices (captained Baines about 3 times last season - blanks in all 3, only got 1 out of the 3 hat tricks by Bale, Walcott & Cazorla too) but my hits in isolation are generally quite good.

I agree in some sense about consistent hits as a long term strategy not working well because it's incredibly hard to keep it up and always spot the guy who's going to shine in a given week and has good fixtures after. But after seeing Butters' heroics last season, I'm a firm believer it's a viable strategy.

                It's definitely a pulse raiser 😀

Would love to get the full Jonty treatment! 🙂 Will definitely apply, would be great to see the guys discuss hits using my team as an advocate for hits.

Your ignoring of the 'never bench, never captain' rule with Baines could come in handy this season. Its arguably been rewritten to 'never bench, consider captaining' this season. 🙂

                    Indeed 🙂

Ironically Baines was detrimental to me this season, earlier when Zabaleta got that assist + CS I did not even consider him as a captain due to the Baines burns I had suffered. I am absolutely convinced last season I would have captained Zaba and took home the differential captain spoils!

This season it's just Coleman over Baines for me, getting Baines would just ruin my team balance. Have a great defence of Evra, Coleman, Davies, Shaw & Collins.

You need to look beyond one game week. I took an 8pt hit this week because I didn't fancy carrying the likes of Benteke, Walcott and Chester for a while. Getting rid immediately opens up other options from the get go allowing me to get Rooney, Ramsey and Baines.

You need to weigh up the potential of the players you are selling, if they are injured however their potential is zero so its easy to justify selling them. Selling Soldado for a hit however will constitute some risk.

There are several factors that I consider, ranked in order:

      1) Is there a reasonable chance of covering the point loss that gameweek
      2) Does the transfer fit the overall strategy for the next three weeks
      3) Does the transfer fit the overall strategy for the next six weeks

I take hits considering the players i m bringing in and players i m taking out and slightly influenced by Market trends

For example after WC in GW4, I realized i made mistake by taking out Baines and Going with RVP

So i took a -8 hit last GW and brought in Baines for Collins, Ben Arfa for JWP and Benteke for RVP

      Worked overall

I believe a hit for an expensive starting 11 in your team player is more than acceptable. Bench fodder is great as back up for 30 mins before the game withdrawals and budget defender injuries, but when players in the 9m + category are injured you are pinning a lot of hope on 4-5m players from the bench getting substantial hauls.

I think price rises/falls also play a massive part in the decision, I have spent 8 pts on Walcott, Benteke, Ben Arfa (needed funds) to get in Rooney, Ozil and Barkley. Rooney and Ozil have already gone up 0.1 each and likely to go up another 0.1 at least and with Benteke already 0.1 down and both Walcott and Benteke looking like another 0.1 down I would just not be able to afford the team I want if I waited and spread the transfers over a couple of weeks. the net difference is 0.7m on just these players.

In general I'm a lot more wary to take a hit than most I find. I've got to feel that over 50% of the time they're going to score five points more than the players that would be playing instead.

Eg. If Player A gets injured and I have Player B on my bench, and I transfer our Player A for Player C for a hit then:

If expect Player B to score 2 points, then I have to be very confident Player C will score at least 7.

For me to be very confident a player is going to score at least 7, then the fixture has to be really good, and he has to be on good form.

I'e already taken a -4 hit to get rid of Jenkinson/Lampard/Benteke so the news about Theo is not what I hoped for! I can get a decent side out this week - would you take another hit before his value drops or wait until the next GW to bring in another midfielder? My team for this week:

    Migs
    Walker/Terry/Vidic/Clyne

Well the only reason why I will spend an extra 1.5m on Suarez are injuries.
Biting hard this year, no need for a guy who is doubtful every singly PL games.
Suarez is a beast and should play 90mins from next week

I remember owning him over Sturridge when he was returning to the team and being eaten alive for suggesting him being the better option. Within a week everyone was trying to bring in Luis... Much like me and Ozil this year...

      Migs
      Sahw Coleman Zaba
      Oscar Michu HBA Mirallas

Sitting at a -8 hit right now, due to Wally injury and an early Soldado to Rooney trade. However got some dead weight which I am keen to cut, such as Chester, Toure, Murner, Debuchy, etc etc.

So how is this for a WC team:

      Mignolet (4.0)

      Vidic, Kompany, Wilson, Clyne, Chester

      Ozil, Michu, Mirallas, Paulinho, R.Morrison

Because Baines would literally have to assist just for you to break even. He's not guaranteed an assist or a goal next game, so the odds are against this paying off.

When a player has a flag taken off (return from injury or suspension) then their price is frozen for 8 days, presumably to stop their price rocketing immediately.

For: Spurs also have good fixtures, and Soldado could score as well as or more than Rooney in the next 4.
You could do something about Nolan with that FT, there is probably more potential to increase points there than Soldado -> Rooney.

Against: If RVP is out though that further increases Rooney's appeal.

On a wc and my main focus is where to fit a City attacking player in. The stand out fixture for me this weekend in terms of potential goal returns. Aguero isthe stand out option but tricky to put him in with Rooney. Negredo certainly has potential, as has Nasri who at 8mil is a bargain, he looks in great form. Really depends on the status of Silva, altough not even certain he will automatically replace Nasri at this stage. Any thoughts?

Influenced by Zep's thinking of not having points left on the bench.

Agree that the midfield could do with beefing up but heart is set on the three big defenders at the back. Could be willing to lose Vidic.

      0.5 in the kitty.

      Boruc 4.0
      Baines Vidic Walker Clyne B.Turner
      Ozil Michu Ramsey Whittingham R.Morrison
      Rooney Suarez Lukaku

      Thoughts?

Hey, thanks for the advice regarding Michu! I'd say you've got the bench right there, although it's a tough call between Barkley and Barfa.
