Daniel Sturridge moves to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings after producing a goal and pair of assists against Sunderland. Luis Suarez bags a brace upon his return to league action as the Reds move to second. Elsewhere, a change in tactics helps Norwich bring home the points at the Britannia courtesy of a Jonny Howson strike:

Suarez and Sturridge Tame Black Cats
Back in league action for the first time since April, Luis Suarez wasted no time in racking up the Fantasy returns as Liverpool ensured Sunderland remained rooted to the foot of the table with a 3-1 win. Lining up alongside Daniel Sturridge in a 3-4-1-2 formation, the Uruguayan bagged a brace as the Reds produced more than two goals in a league game for the first time this season – his headline-grabbing act has already seen significant investment as Fantasy managers look to bring the Uruguayan on board ahead of a superb run of games which pits Rodgers’ side against Palace, Newcastle, West Brom and Fulham in the next five Gameweeks.

Sturridge wasn’t to be outdone, though. Atoning for his blank against Southampton last weekend, his haul means he has now scored in five of the first six Gameweeks and with sidekick Suarez now back to wreak havoc, he looks set for a prosperous next few matches. Coming in at 9.6 in FPL to Suarez’ 10.9, Sturridge’s more budget-friendly price makes him an obvious target for those looking to swap out the similarly-priced Roberto Soldado, with owners of the stricken Christian Benteke also targeting the former Chelsea player. Suarez, though, remains a real differential – only 9% currently own the Uruguayan compared to Sturridge’s 32% but yesterday’s display is likely to see plenty more acquire the duo, with some even looking to grab both for their three-man frontlines.

So often panned for a somewhat selfish streak in front of goal, Sturridge admitted Suarez’ positioning for both goals made the decision to pass a straightforward one:

“Luis gives me angles to play in and for me it’s about getting assists as well as scoring. It’s about the team winning games. If someone’s in a better position, you put them in and allow them to score the goal.”

Rodgers Talks Tactics
With Glen Johnson still sidelined, many had assumed Liverpool’s move to a 3-4-1-2 in the midweek cup clash against United was a result of the unconvincing Gameweek 5 home defeat by Southampton. Brendan Rodgers’ decision to rest Jose Enrique that day and field four natural centre-halves in a back-four saw Liverpool lose their unbeaten league record – a shift to a three-man backline, with Enrique on the left of midfield, was rolled out at Old Trafford on Wednesday, with Suarez returning from a 10-match ban to partner Sturridge up top.

After yesterday’s game, however, Rodgers revealed he’s been looking at the new formation as a way to incorporate Suarez and Sturridge up top together. If the Reds boss retains the same shape, then, it could potentially afford Enrique and Johnson the wing-back roles and boost their out of position prospects, while Philippe Coutinho – once fit – would be expected to move into the “the hole” behind the front two:

“We’ve changed the structure of our team a bit to allow us to pass it better – we’ve still got a lot of work to do – but also to fit in with the type of players that we have. Those two (Suarez and Sturridge) will only get better; you see the understanding. They looked very bright today. They have worked a lot in training – it’s not just something that has been dropped in. We looked at 3-4-1-2 towards the end of last season. We did some work on it, looking at Luis coming back, and they have struck up a very good partnership. “

Potters Attacking Woes
The arrival of Mark Hughes may have proved the catalyst for a change in Stoke’s tactical approach but while their play is less blood and thunder this term, the goal-shy problems of seasons gone by remain. The Potters registered the second lowest goal tally in the Premier League last time out with a total of 34 strikes and yesterday’s 1-0 home loss at the hands of Norwich means Hughes’ side have now scored in just one of their three fixtures at the Britannia, with four goals in six Gameweeks overall.

Kenwyne Jones replaced Peter Crouch as Stoke’s lone forward in Gameweek 3 but neither player has scored or assisted in the league all season – given that his side managed a single shot on target all afternoon, courtesy of a long range effort from Steven Nzonzi, Hughes may consider shaking things up after naming an unchanged side from the previous weekend’s loss at Arsenal yesterday. With Fulham and West Brom up next, the short-term schedule is enough to persuade those holding Stoke’s assets to hold for now, though their display against the Canaries will be enough to deter any would-be investors.

After the game, Hughes admitted that while a change in approach will result in the occasional off day, too many of his players simply failed to produce yesterday:

“To be honest, we didn’t see that coming today because we’ve been really good and that’s the most disappointing thing. We talked at the beginning of the season that on occasions there would be days when we wouldn’t get it right and there would be days like we’ve had today. But there’s minimum requirement in terms of what you have do in a game to affect it and that means the vast majority of your players playing at a level that allows you to compete. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough players playing at the right level today.”

Hughton Shifts Shape
Chris Hughton’s side arrived at the Britannia having failed to notch in each of their first two away trips and with Stoke having kept out City in their previous home game, a clean sheet for the hosts looked on the cards. The Canaries boss made a subtle change to his formation, dropping Johan Elmander from the role in “the hole” behind Ricky Van Wolfswinkel and bringing in Alex Tettey to sit in front of the back-four instead. This allowed Robert Snodgrass and Anthony Pilkington (in for the injured Nathan Redmond) to push up on the flanks, with the visitors looking more like a 4-3-3 when in possession, as our members can attest to.

After the game, the Norwich boss was quick to praise match-winner Jonny Howson and also admitted he was happy with the slight alteration to his team’s shape:

“He is a talent. He is one that there is some debate over, and that’s with us as well. What we do know is that he is a talent. He’s a player from midfield who likes to break, so it’s the same with him as it is with Leroy Fer – it’s about getting those right balances. It was really good to get Anthony Pilkington back, a player who we have missed, and overall tactically we got it as well as we could have done.”

Given that Norwich now have back-to-back games against Chelsea and Arsenal, there’d be no surprise if Hughton kept faith with the same formation – in spite of his impressive midweek cup double against Watford, then, new boy Gary Hooper looks likely to warm the bench once again as Hughton looks for a little more resilience. The Canaries boss went on to explain his decision to drop Hooper to the bench and recall Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, after the Dutchman missed out with a toe injury in midweek:

“Yes, Gary was very much in my thoughts. I really had to give that one some serious consideration because I wanted to be positive, in whichever way it was we set up. In the end I felt we could get more joy from having a bit more possession and breaking from midfield, and that is how it proved. We know Ricky is a goalscorer but sometimes it takes time. He is the type of player who needs help from his team mates to create chances. What you can’t fault with him is his work-rate for the team. We have to give him enough decent service to score goals, but the other side of his game and his work for the team is excellent.”

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

This season has seen many a seasoned pro (including many of the FFS mods and contribs) struggle to replicate their previous glories.

What key advice would you offer them to ensure they climb up the FPL rankings?

Here’s some of mine. Feel free to say whether you agree or disagree with them.

    1. Premium defenders are the real deal. Invest in one of Vert or Baines, or two of the 6m to 6.5m options.
    2. Stop thinking of Yaya Toure as only a def midfielder who gets lucky occasionally. The casual players have cast aside that theory and so should you.
    3. Ramsey is this year’s Michu. Just accept it, swallow your pride and buy him.
    4. RVP really is over priced. Rooney is much better value.
    5. Get one of Suarez and Sturridge and captain your choice when they have a great fixture.

      1) Ramsey is alright at 6.2 good value can't go wrong but its ok if you don't scamper to get him.
      2) Get on the Nani/Mata wagons sharpish. They will come good
      3) I'm holding Robin and its not hurting my team.
      4) Think for yourself. Lot of madness going on right now. Its very important to keep calm and do whats best for your team. Back yourself and your gut. Always.

Be interested to see how a team that gets Nani and Mata in, ignores Ramsey and goes for RVP over Rooney does over the coming five to six weeks. Keep us posted.

I jumped on board the train at Ramsey Street station and haven't looked back, but I just can't bring myself to ever pay 9.3m for Yaya Toure, I can now buy Walcott for the SAME PRICE! 😯

We've seen this from him two years in a row now, he always starts off well and fades away... I'm convinced it will happen again...

I agree with everything else though...

Yaya could be a way of preserving your Walcott cash until he comes back. Michu also does that job. But while Yaya is in this kind of box to box mood (many goal attempts v Villa btw) surely its wise to get him and then sell at a profit. He's gone up once this week with at least one more rise likely this week.

My advice if i have anything to add ...as per previous posts...Keep looking at the fallers...Walcott/Benteke/Johnson/Clyne...and on and on...Most players by now will have built up a nice pot of around 104.0 ish...Mid October will see the return of some very appetising FPL players who become differentials due to injury...

1 Baines has always been a good option. The bonus structure is helping the other high priced defenders improve as well as the lack of good high priced midfield options.

2 Toure is an option but only due to the lack of other options. Ozil is overpriced and not a goal scorer, Spurs midfield is unproven, Uniteds and Chelsea's are rotation risks, Coutinho was out of form and injured, same with Walcott. That only really leaves Michu so Toure is at the moment probably the best option to play with Michu ad the high priced midfielder. But I don't think it will last all season

3 Ramsey is scoring at a higher conversion rate than Messi ever has. It will slow down
However due to ownership levels and still a cheap price I have decided that it is better to be with him than against him.

4 RVP could be a key differential still. He is owned by very few non-casuals and he will hit form. He could easily come back and score a hat trick and watch the bandwagon begin. Rooney looks a good alternative currently.

5 Suarez and Sturridge look the in form strikers. But they were playing the team at the bottom of the league. Liverpool didn't look too good in the previous against Southampton. They are good options but not essential.

      1. Perhaps but a lot has been luck. Premium hasn't paid on Man U so far or arguably on CIty all that much
      2. No. He's a box-to-box midfielder who has been lucky and isn't a bad prospect but isn't worth his price.
      3. No he's not Michu. But he could be good value at 6.5.

i think an important tip is not to panic. this season is different so far to most but panicing and knee jerking will lead to needless hits.

keep calm and use transfers wisely. there will come a time where big hitting mids will suddenly find form and then those stuck with big expensive defenders will struggle.

1-2 big hitting defenders is more than enough. balance is still the key

      On your points:

      1. Doesn't hurt to have a mix. Nice to have a big defender to rely on
      2. He's well expensive now. Would you rather him over Michu or Walcott for the season?
      3. Possibly
      4. Definitely
      5. Looking very good

Only thing I'll add is big players always come good. Ozil, RVP, Walcott and co will be at the top of the heap come May.

Depends on who else you have? But out of that lot JWP should be dumped. He's an example of a failed bandwagon and isn't even nailed on. If you've had Barkley a while then he's a great cheap mid option, keep him. Keep Ozil and Oscar as well. HBA up to you...he's explosive so if you can handle a few weeks of 2pts then one of 10 keep him.

I'd swap JWP for Ramsey if I was you. If you can't afford to do that it probably means you have invested unwisely elsewhere. Move some money to do JWP to Ramsey if I were you.

I'm not saying Yaya is essential, just we need to rethink how we perceive him...he is now a credible option in the 9m bracket...you however have Ozil and Oscar who I think are better. So no need to ditch them

A mid of Ramsey, Ozcar, Ozil, Barkley and HBA is a very good mid indeed.

Completely agree with 3 - people (myself included) need to swallow our pride and get on unfashionable bandwagons early. I remember a few years ago refusing to get Darren Bent in as I thought I'd missed his good run of form - and he just kept on scoring.

I also think people shouldn't be afraid to get in players that are covering for injuries for a few weeks. I know lots of people steered clear of Barkley because they thought he was only playing because of injuries - this may well be true but he's had a great run for 5-6 weeks - enjoy it. Same goes for Sigurrson (this one in particular is killing me, I was laughing at my mate who brought him in a few weeks ago and he's now top of my ML)

I have to agree on all the points, I saw the ship sinking in GW5 and Wildcarded,

Jonty's tips basically replicate my thoughts (and the resulting team). Before tonight's games -come on Distin, I've climbed 873,233 places since GW5.

My only regret since is leaving Terry on the bench this week.

Tip wise, I have one eye on GW 12/13, everyone is pretty much playing a team close to equal quality, I expect low/erratic scoring. I'll be transferring Arsenal, Chelsea and Swansea players heavily from GW8.

Disagree with Yaya in that he is not worth 9.3m. He will get points but am of the opinion when you bring them in you have to expect to keep them for 5+ game weeks, he doesn't fit that mold. Worldclass but too deep playing for the price.

Re defenders, I think you can get overcaught up in the benefits of premium priced. Yes they are better this season, but midpriced defenders picked to take advantage of schedules can do the job too this season. Although maybe I am saying this as I can't afford any....

      Agree with the rest.

Choose a defensively sound 'second tier' team, and double up; in the games against lower teams they'll be just as likely to get clean sheets as top teams are against each other, and various other lesser teams.

Lost at the bottom of the last topic...but belongs here i think

Just thought i'd chuck this in today's (this weeks) debate on the Pool forwards...I'm basing my picks this year on a combination of "shots" (in it to win it) and catching the falling prices...So to that end here'e my simple shots table for the past two gameweeks...Once again Paulinho sits atop with Suarez fourth and a long scroll down for Sturridge....And significantly Suarez obviously having played only one of the games....!...http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/3829/

Real utd fans will know that this Team has been in decline for about 5 years ,
Simply put we've lacked decent investment (Glaziers) and SAF papered over the cracks , teams feared coming to OT - they're looking forward to it now.
I was never in favour of Moyse- that hasn't changed.
A few years ago we were able to pick up players like Bale ( we should have bought him 2 seasons ago) .
We can't compete on the field nor off it.

      Give moyes a break!

He needs time. He has taken over a squad short of at least 3 world class player's and Woodward made a complete balls of his transfers in the summer as well.

I didn't think we played too bad at the weekend. What cost us was Rooneys poor finishing and I don't like saying it but Rio's can't cope at the top level any more. Time to play smalling instead

How do you think Cazorla coming back will effect Ramsey' game? There is a nice balance with Wilshere on the left, especially defensively. Jack is physically stronger and quicker than Cazorla, he's able to cover more ground, him tucking in from the left has probably given Ramsey a bit more freedom to get up and down. But, Cazorla is Cazorla, when he's fit, he has to play.

Do you think we'll see a slightly more reserved Ramsey when Santi returns, or will he carry on playing the way he is?

He is too confident to play reserved now in my opinion!

Ramsey's average position is actually very central - Cazorla could come back on the left with Ramsey and one of Wilshere/ Arteta / Flamini playing alongside him in the middle

I can't imagine Wenger saying to Ramsey to play more reserved. If it was any other manager I would consider it a real possibility but not Wenger.

Think maybe the regulars from here have given up early this season rather than the casuals 😐
