Do you fancy shaking those international break blues with a little flutter on England? Paddy Power may just have what you’re after.

Once again they’ve come up with some enhanced odds for Fantasy Football Scout visitors and are offering 2/1 on an England victory against Montenegro in this evening’s encounter. The regular odds on a win for Roy Hodgson’s is 4/11, so this is a great opportunity for those without a Paddy account to sign-up and cash in.

Click here to swoop on these enhanced odds.

If you’ve already registered an account, you can still benefit from a Money Back Special from this evening’s vital qualifier – if Steven Gerrard scores anytime, Paddy will refund all losing First Goalscorer, Last Goalscorer, Correct Score and Scorecast singles on the match.

To be clear, this England vs Montenegro special is limited to a £10 stake, is open to new Paddy Power customers only and subject to the terms and conditions specified.

Finally of course, we should state that all these offers are only available to those aged 18 and over and are subject to Paddy Power’s terms and conditions. Also, if you’re going to have a bet, always gamble responsibly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hello lads,
I need a very honest opinion about having Pablo Hernandez if you dont have Michu as Swansea coverage. He is expected to start GW 8 ( already started training last week, so chances of him starting are very high).

He was off to a good start before the injury. So, is he a good choice or not?

He could do alright but I would always fancy Michu to outscore him.

Forget about Michu outscoring, i just wanted to know his scope as an option for a under 6 m mid.

When he is playing, he is a great option. If he could play 90 mins in most games, he would be in most peoples teams, but he is always getting niggly injuries here and there.

Brady, Barkley and Amalfitano are better options.

Michu taking a huge slice of Swans attacking points will be to Hernandez' disadvantage.

NO, just don't. An injury waiting to happen constantly and there's better cheaper options anyway these being: Amalfitano, Brady, Barkley, Morrison and Whittingham.

Put it this way: My minileague rival (ahead of me by about 40 points but I'd call him casual) just brought him in. I was actually quite happy about this.

That could easily come back to bite me on the buttocks though I suppose.

I think he's a good choice and had him in my team before he got injured. But...

Michu is one of the few premium midfielders actually scoring at the moment I think and doubling up on the two of them feels like too much

Just a little tip for members...I was taken by Andy's fantastic post re the Bonus points system yesterday (as oppose to actual BAPS)...Looking into it in a bit more detail i compared the information contained in the ICT tables with that of points awarded in the Bonus points system...If you take the forwards out of the ICT tables you end up with the top bonus points system scorers (cumulative)...and hence the best BAPS chances...the two cross over nicely.

It is probably much higher, but the standard is also a lot lower the further down the league you go. Spanish teams do transfers in the thousands rather than the millions.

  4. Pre-January Wildcard Planning

Hey guys! I posted this last night in the Dead Zone, I thought I'd re-post in case you missed it, and for the fact it took me 5/6 hours to write, and I wrote it all on my phone! My hands were dead after!

    January Wildcard Preparations:

There's a lot of people playing their wildcards now, over the international break, and people toying with transfer ideas with all this spare time. Personally I'm looking at transferring in some players for the long term, between now and when the January wildcard can be played, not just for a couple of good fixtures. The January wildcard can't be played until Gameweek 20 starts.

There are 13 fixtures between now and the earliest opportunity we can play our January wildcard. So I thought I'd analyse these fixtures to see which teams have the most promising selection of matches. I've also analysed which teams have and haven't been performing well at home and/or away.

    Analysing the Fixtures -

Firstly I began by seeing which of the 20 Premier League teams play the teams who finished in the top seven last season the most, the least and whether they're home or away. The teams who finished in the top seven last season are; Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool.

The Favourable Fixtures - Top 7:
Aston Villa and Chelsea both play last years top seven the least, 3 matches each. Aston Villa play all three of these at home, which will without a doubt give them an advantage. Chelsea play two of these three games at home.

Other teams which don't play that many of these matches are; Crystal Palace, Everton, Manchester City, Manchester United, Norwich, Sunderland, Swansea and West Brom. These 8 teams play 4 of those matches. Manchester City, Manchester United and Sunderland are the most notable teams as they play three of these matches at home.

The Unfavourable Fixtures - Top 7:
Southampton have the best defensive record in the Premier League so far this season, keeping 5 clean sheets and only conceding 2 goals. But can Southampton keep up this run as they play the teams who finished in the top seven last season the most, 7 games, and they play most of these matches away, three at home and four away. The next team who doesn't have quite so favourable fixtures is Hull. They have 6 of these fixtures and play 4 of these away. And finally Liverpool. They currently have the joint most points in the league with Arsenal, but will their form turn the other way? They have the worst set of these fixtures, playing last years top seven 5 times and all of these matches are away.

    Consecutive Fixtures - Top 7:
    I noticed that there's a lot of consecutive matches which are being played against last years top seven. Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Norwich and West Brom have no consecutive matches. Here are the rest consecutive fixtures listed by Gameweeks;

    Arsenal: 10-11 and 15-16-17
    Aston Villa: 8-9
    Cardiff: 12-13
    Everton: 14-15
    Fulham: 10-11 and 16-17
    Hull: 8-9 and 13-14
    Liverpool: 18-19
    Manchester United: 13-14
    Newcastle: 10-11
    Southampton: 12-13 and 19-20
    Stoke: 19-20
    Sunderland: 14-15
    Swansea: 17-18
    Tottenham: 12-13
    West Ham: 17-18

Next up I checked out which teams play 'the promoted three' the most, the least and whether they're home or away. 'The promoted three' are; Cardiff, Crystal Palace and Hull.

The Favourable Fixtures - The Promoted 3:
Arsenal play these three teams the most, playing 2 at home and 2 away. Next up is Liverpool, Norwich and West Brom, who all play these three twice at home and once away.

The Unfavourable Fixtures - The Promoted 3:
This part of the analysis may not be deemed 'unfavourable' but I thought I'd carry on with the style of this post. Cardiff, Hull, Manchester City, Newcastle, Tottenham and West Brom only play one of these three teams once.

Consecutive Fixtures - The Promoted 3:
As you could guess there wasn't many consecutive matches that consisted of 'the promoted three.' No team plays these three consecutively apart from Arsenal, Gameweek 13-14, and West Brom, Gameweek 16-17, who strangely both play Cardiff away and then Hull at home.

    Home & Away -

We all love it when our football club plays at home, as it gives them an edge. These ten teams all have the edge on the other ten, as they all play one more home game; Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Manchester United, Newcastle, Stoke, Swansea and West Ham.

    Home Advantage - Scoring Goals:
Manchester City lead the pack after scoring 13 goals at the Etihad Stadium. Chelsea are up next finding the net 6 times followed by Arsenal, Liverpool and Southampton who have all scored 5 goals at home.

    Home Advantage - Conceding Goals:
Chelsea and Southampton have concede the least at their own Stadiums, after only letting in 1 goal. Surprisingly Hull have also only conceded just 1 goal, and I'm sure if they continue this then a lot of fantasy managers will be placing a Hull City defender in their fantasy line ups when they have a comfortable home fixture. Next up is Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton, Manchester United and Stoke, who have all conceded 2 goals.

    Home Disadvantage - Scoring Goals:
Stoke are at the bottom of the pack after only finding the next twice at home. Other teams struggling to find the net at home, after scoring 3 goals are; Hull, Manchester United, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Sunderland.

    Home Disadvantage - Conceding Goals:
Sunderland have brought the most disappointment to their fans after conceding 9 goals at home, followed closely by Swansea who have let in 8 goals. Also Fulham and Norwich haven't had much home luck either after conceding 6 goals.

Away Days, Happy Days - Scoring Goals:
Arsenal are on form away from home after finding the net 9 times. Manchester United are on 7 away goals followed by Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle who are all on 6.

Away Days, Happy Days - Conceding Goals:
Yet again Southampton have conceded just 1 goal, this time away from home, and so have Tottenham and West Ham. West Brom have the second best defensive record away from home, only conceding twice.

Away Day Blues - Scoring Goals:
Fulham and Norwich are failing to find the net away from home, only scoring 1 goal. Southampton, Tottenham, Stoke, Crystal Palace and Sunderland have scored 2 goals away.

Away Day Blues - Conceding Goals:
Newcastle and Crystal Palace have the worst defensive record away, after conceding 9 goals. Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland have let in 7 goals away.

    A Few Notable Things -
    - Sunderland are yet to pick up three points.
    - Swansea haven't yet won at the Liberty Stadium.
    - Manchester City and Crystal Palace both haven't won away.
    - Chelsea and Manchester City have won all of their home games.
    - Chelsea, Southampton, Manchester City, Everton and Hull are all un beaten at home.
    - Arsenal, Liverpool and West Brom are all unbeaten away.
    - Most matches have been won by a one goal margin, 32.
    - Arsenal and Liverpool are on good form as they have both won the most matches, 5.
    - Crystal Palace and Sunderland have failed to keep any clean sheets in the Premier League this season.
    - Arsenal are the only team who has managed to score in every Premier League match.
    - West Ham, Stoke and Crystal Palace have all failed to score in the most games, 4.

Just throwing it in there before someone says it...
We all know form can beat fixtures, but how many can it beat? And I know not always does playing at home mean you have the advantage (Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa, Manchester United 1-2 West Brom.)

I hope some of you can take something away from this post, as it has taken me a long time to put it all together!

Hello everyone. I didn't want to do SAS because I didn't want to double up on Liverpool attack but now am I considering something seemingly more stupid. I'm incredibly tempted to do a Coleman/Baines double up with the view of getting attacking returns over a period of time rather than being fussed about clean sheet points.

It sounds so suicidal yet so tempting for me. Could a Baines/Coleman double work?

I guess I convinced myself by thinking of Baines as a 6th midfielder rather than a defender but would like to know what others thought.

Like the idea in priniciple but don't think you'd want to bench colman and johnson as often as that though - often it'd be worth a 4-3-3 and benching a cheap mid instead.

Depend how much you like the idea of playing Baines/H/H every week....with a/a on the bench....A cheap Hull defender makes up for the pain of Coleman being benched a bit...

Agree with you. An example this week though:

Baines (HULL) coleman (HULL) johnson (new)

I'd probably fancy playing all three.

Oh yeah...that's good...I like the Everton and Liverpool picks right across the board (far more stable FPL picks than some other "big" clubs) so i'm going with D M F from each....I have Coleman Barkley Lukaku for Everton and Toure > Johnson, Suarez, Coutinho (?) in mind for the Pool...have to see how Coutinho gets on though.

I like to take it a week at a time, making transfers based on perception for the next 4-8 weeks.

2 forwards from one club isn't as much of a risk as 2 defenders. They claim their own points. If one scores a hatty his score won't be negatively impacted if his colleague does nothing or his defenders concede.

Defenders are dependent on their colleagues for cleansheets . If both your players have outstanding games and their colleague scores a 90th minute OG your points are screwed. Just my opinion but I don't like the plan of having a keeper and defenders or 2 defenders from the same club as cleansheets impact their points and prospective BPs, even if they bring attacking returns.

true but this is the pessimistic viewpoint. The optimistic viewpoint is that if I have 2 defenders in one team, I only need one team to get a clean sheet and it gets me 8 points.

8,8,0,0,8,0 is the same as 8,4,4,0,4,4 which might be more likely with 2 defenders from different teams.

Overall it all adds up to how many clean sheet your players get over a season, not an individual gameweek.

It's a fact. Neither optimistic nor pessimistic. A cleansheet lost by a team negatively impacts any defender from that team you have in your FF team.

If you've two defenders from same team keeping a CS that's great, not great if they concede. If you've one defender having an outstanding game and another causes a goal conceded it still negatively impacts his points.

But for a forward another players bad performance won't deduct points from him if he's doing well.

A lot of players have Ozil and Ramsey in their midfield, good choice, both doing great. But they'd be better off FF points wise if they had more CS as it affects their points too.

If you only have baines, his points are still affected by other everton players' performances though - This argument isn't reliant on you owning both.

The other way round - when baines has a bad game and loses the ball but his teammate makes a goal line clearance/ save/ block to keep the clean sheet - baines gets the 4 points too, deservedly or not.

I never thought it about it that way, a defender playing bad gets a CS bonus. That's a great point.

It is pessimistic of me though not to get two defenders from one team but I prefer to spread risk there.

Who's your current back 5. I've Baines, Burmer, Mbiwa, Collins and Wilson since WC in GW6. They're doing crap compared to the defence pre-WC, I'm putting too much faith in Baines 😉

                Erm...

If I tell you my current defence you might throw up.

                It is kind of big!

                OK here goes:

                Baines, Coleman, Enrique, Terry, Evra

yes I'm playing 5-2-3 next week. *cringes at potential response*

yes this is genuine embarrassment because although I firmly put my money where my mouth is and believe in my current strategy, I know a lot of people in this community will ridicule it!

Now is the time to try that kinda defence with value like like Barkley, Ramsey, Brady, Amalfitano in mid and Remy, Lambert, Bent and Lukaku upfront. A bold strategy hopefully it'll pay off for you.

On the other point: ozil relies on people scoring from his assists so he can certainly be negatively impacted. Remember all those sitters walcott missed in his last game - he cost ozil a few assists. Similarly Suarez lost out on 2 assists + BP from sturridge and moses hitting the woodwork last time out.

Özil has quite nice scoring tally last few years too. Trust me, he will score.

And if you wonder, no, I do not own Özil. I wildcarded recently, but didn't buy him. Reason: I already had Ramsey and Giroud from early on. No need to tripple up Arsenal attacking coverage, right?

I have Baines and Coleman as well. Baines is staying in long-term for me. 170+ FF points the last 2 years and and an average of 150+ in the last 4. Ther dilemma is whether to keep Coleman as they have a good stretch of 6 games where you could see 2-3 CS, plus his attacking potential. On the other hand, I could downgrade him to Clyne and use the money in my midfield. Or upgrade to Luiz or Terry. I hate international weeks, too much time to think.

don't sell coleman. Independently it is not a good transfer. As far as I'm concerned, treat each transfer independently regardless of how your team is 'balanced'

Team balance affects your weekly score (greater variance) but not your yearly one.

              And back to the vodka

Thanks for the thought. That's where I am leaning. Everton have a nice little stretch of 6 games. If it ain't broke don't fix it, but having 2 weeks to look at one's team - it's difficult not to tinker. Maybe vodka is the answer . . . .

Wasn't happy with defence. Needed to use a FT to field 3. Williams isn't gonna make it and was too expensive to sit on my bench. Looked at feasible long term targets for >5.2. Everton should get a decent cs haul. Swans haven't looked defensively solid enough to try and capitalise on their nice fixtures. He plays 90 almost every week. Seems suited to the new BPS. These are my reasons.

Used my wildcard in the first international break, mainly out of sheer boredom/ Also taken the odd hit on top of that since.... Not doing too shabby in my mini leagues and at around 180,000 in the overall standings. already brought in Ravel for Ben Afri this week, tink he'll be a solid 4th 5th choice mid.
Anyway would appreciate a RMT and maybe tips for moving forward.

That's a very good team. Don't take a hit this week but maybe move Collins on next week for Reid (if you are keeping the SOT/WH rotation). I might also think abut Suarez or Rooney for Giroud in a week or 2 since you have 2 Arsenal attacking players already and money to ugrade.

Was thinking Reid, especially after hearing about the extent of Williams' injury. Saying that, pretty happy with my first four defenders atm so will probably hold fire and address my Arsenal midfielders, pragmatist in me says keep Ramsey but the romantic is telling me to stick with Mesut!
Long term, i'm looking at getting Suarez in soon especially with christmas period coming up but Aguero and Beastly Benteke (villa fan) are screaming at me too. Will be tough to wrench Giroud out, being their only real option up top. See how he's looking against Norwich.
          Much appreciated Jaap!

Reid/Fonte rotate perfect H/A, so you can play 4 at the back those weeks when 2 of your midfield don't have strong games. I like the Benteke thought too. I would look at Negredo before Aguero just on price; lots of good forwards in the 7.5-9.5ish range.

Villa fan with Amalfitano. That must hurt.

haha had a couple of ribbings from baggies mates thats for sure, its all love though! You can't entertain that kind of pettiness if you're chasing green arrows. Saying that i refused to have redmond in my team being a bluenose and all.
Think a Suarez Lukaku Benteke attack will be the way to go for me, no champions league and all pivotal for respective teams.

This season has seen the rise of the bonus point. So much more attention has been adorned on these points than in previous seasons, that some are now using BPs as the key parameter by which to assess and select players.

Seems what was once a "bonus" to a weekly score is now a (/the, particularly for defenders) central tenet of the selection criteria for many FPL managers when choosing a player.

Indeed, which is misguided. It can only be a paramater to help separate two already good FPL prospects and not a basis for a decision IMO.

For example, two defenders from the same team where one consistently gets better BPS

Anyone thought of only buying players who did nothing last week but have great potential for future weeks?

I.e. Strictly avoiding bandwagons - NEVER chasing last week's points?

Doing this I guess you would get a fair share of bandwagons *before* they started - which is of course the dream for everyone. If you had a lucky season this way it could truly see you way, way ahead of many rivals.

Of course there are major negatives like the times when someone explodes AND has good fixtures ahead/ not being able to jump on obvious price rises.

Either way I might set up a second team and give it a whirl

Fair play. My main criteria is that a player has

A good fixtures and OK value
        OR
B has excellent value which i calculate based on points per minute per dollar and only if they seem likely to play 90.

i find early season bandwagons are important for protecting team value (keeping up with others)

think its time to move on and get about focusing solely on points without thoughts on team value, which should take care of itself from here on out

I target players with strong underlying stats and good performances often, but it's sometimes wise to wait a few weeks before bringing in to check the performances are consistent and the stats sustainable, in which case they may have already had a haul.

      It's a mixture of both.

Point blank refusing to get a player while they are on fire like RVP or Suarez just because you didn't get their first big haul is single minded and stupid.

Not getting too carried away with the obscure players doing well one week, then yeah, it's not always a good idea to jump on those.

I don't chase points - generally to my cost this season, but points does generally equal form and that, along with other factors like price, player / team quality, fixtures, nailed-on-ness, importance to the team, position in the team, set pieces, etc is important.

E.g. I have finally brought in Barkley this week, however I don't think of this as point chasing - he is just a good option, ticking most of the boxes I listed above.

The term "chasing points" can be slightly confusing in my opinion.

The term, at least in my understanding, refers to people bringing in last week's top performers even though it is debatable whether they can replicate that (FPL) form often enough to justify bringing them in.

I think it is often falsely equated to bringing in any player who scored well the previous week.

Well.. It is often used in the context like if gary neville scored a brace and everyone bought him that week, they'd be chasing last week's points.

I agree that in the case of buying lukaku this week, for example, it is certainly not in anyway a decision that cannot be justified. Good fix, good value, good form makes lukaku a great prospect (just shame I have 3 everton)

      Great question Ross.

It's a bit of a conundrum, Faye a few seasons ago had an established partnership with Chester. Rosenior is versatile but is played as a full back in addition to wing-back duties - Figuroa and El-Moahamady can both cover the latter role well. The reality is that Curtis Davies is likely to partner Chester, as before, resulting in Faye dropping out should a back four be deployed, unless they were to embark on a flawless run of clean sheets. If 3-5-2 catches on at Humberside, you're looking at the pack getting shuffled somewhat, with all three players you mentioned getting a start.

Well, its a tough one that, and it could go either way. In this situation guessing the correct answer is an option which will ultimately prove too risky imo. The rewards for getting it right probably wont justify the risk meaning avoiding the matter entirely is probably the best course of action.

I hope that Rossamous appreciates the sometimes slightly warped sense of humour on this site - his question is not unreasonable.
Hull have an outstanding defensive record at home, he is considering bringing in a cheapo Hull defender on his wildcard, and he is wondering which of the two cheapest Hull defenders who have played in their last 2 or 3 matches is the more likely to retain their place in the team. What's wrong with that?

I suppose I may possibly have got slightly the wrong end of the stick here. Many of the comments on this post were probably made because of its multi-upvoting and hulking. But it would be easy to misinterpret some of them as suggesting that the question was not worth asking at all.

Good starting lineup this week. Obviously you need to move Collins or JWP with your next FT. Do you have enough cash to move JWP for Lallana ? If not maybe Ravel Morrison. Don't take a hit though.

0 in the bank. So difficulties moving the benchwarmers on an FT.

My next FT will probably be Ozil > Walcott to free up 1m or so of funds to sort out the bench.

Understood. I haven't looked but you can probably do R.Morrison straight up for JWP. One other thought would be Collins to Clyne(4.4), especially if you plan to play 3-4-3 all the time; then you'd have Clyne on the bench in the event of rotation/injury from one of your starters.

Ah, Gerrard and Lampard. Lots of comment on it being just for old times' sake, or a step backwards, etc.

    But!

It never used to work because they were both trying to do the same thing - bomb forward and control the attack, arrive in the box unexpectedly, etc, so they nullified each other's threat and got in each other's way.

Now, Gerrard has slowed right up and sits much deeper, in the Pirlo-esque "quarterback" position, and Lamps is still bombing forward.

So it makes sense - you now have two central / deep midfielders with distinct roles and different things to bring. It works precisely because they're still being selected - the pairing has changed over time.
