As the clock ticks down on this evening’s deadline, we roll out our usual trio of alternative picks for your perusal. All our featured options will set you back less than 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, crucially as the fixtures pick up pace, have three home games in the upcoming four to potentially take advantage of:

Peter Crouch

Having found himself warming the Stoke bench for a number of weeks, the big target man has forced himself back into contention with a series of talismanic displays. Since returning to the first XI in Gameweek 9, Crouch has scored or assisted in three of five appearances – a goal against United, a pair of assists at Swansea and an assist at home to Sunderland highlights his contribution.

Essentially, then, Crouch has played a part in four of his side’s eight goals since convincing Mark Hughes of his worth and will be key to the Potters’ chances at home to Cardiff tomorrow night. Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 2.5 in the Sun Dream Team, he also has a trip to Hull and home game against Villa to bolster his short-term appeal.

Jay Rodriguez

A pre-season favourite around these parts, the former Burnley forward was slow out the traps for Southampton. Rodriguez failed to justify our early faith, with blanks in each of the first six Gameweeks, but has since found his form and more than merited his return to Mauricio Pochettino’s first XI.

From Gameweek 7 onwards, Rodriguez has produced a spell of real consistency and found the net in four of seven appearances – with goals against Swansea, Fulham, Stoke and Chelsea. Factor in an assist and eight bonus points across that run and, at 5.8 in FPL, he’s proven a real bargain over the past couple of months. Rodriguez – who will set you back 7.9 in the Sky Sports game and 2.5 in the Sun Dream Team, welcomes Aston Villa to St Mary’s tomorrow and plays host to City and Spurs in the next four, with a trip to Newcastle also on his agenda.

Barry Bannan

The only Palace player to score in any of the last five Gameweeks, the former Villa man looks vital to Tony Pulis’ attempts to steer his side out of the drop zone. With the Eagles expected to tighten up at the back and rely on aerial threat in the box, Bannan’s delivery from a left wing berth could be perfect fodder for the likes of Marouane Chamakh up top at home to West Ham this evening.

Coming in at just 4.4 in FPL (4.7 in the Sky Sports game and 1.5 in the Sun Dream Team,) the Scot has started each of the last five since the departure of Ian Holloway and, with home games against Cardiff and Newcastle also on his agenda over the next four, he looks a real under-the-radar budget option for the festive period.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Falling stars GW14…Christmas shopping special

You know the format…Falling stars is a fictitious team/squad made up of players all of whom are cheaper than their opening GW values and collectively on, or less than, the original 100 mill budget, some for immediate start and others for the watch list.

Apologies for no post last week, Mrs Wakey had me out Christmas shopping …Jeez…spent a fortune. I can’t wait for January sales and the chance to bag a bargain!!!…Speaking of which…As a tonic I’ve opted to soothe my aching wallet by reducing the original FPL 100 mill budget still further… down by 5% to 95 mill max…and as it’s the season to be rotated I’ll see if I can’t pick a little bit of nailedoniness along the way…

My picks from the red side of TotalFPL for GW 14

    Davis (3.9b) Gazzaninga (3.9)

    Collins (4.3b1) Johnson (5.7) Jenkinson (4.1) Cahill (5.7) Chester (3.8b3)

    Coutinho (8.6) Paulinho (6.7) JWP (4.3b2) Shelvey (5.3) Walcott (9.1)

    Negredo (9.3C) Soldado (8.7) Torres (8.2)

Total 91.6 million…..saving a whopping 5.6 mill on opening GW values and with 8.4 mill left in the bank.

    Top picks

Cahill…Cahill and Terry are, together, simply the biggest centre back set piece threat in the prem…Great picks by wild rover.

Paulinho and Soldado…Unbelievable !!…AVB has decided the best way to solve Spurs goal drought is to place a misfiring Paulinho OOP alongside a misfiring Soldado…You couldn’t make it up !!!..we’ll see how they get on ???

Walcott…Bound to be a bit ring rusty (if picked) but a great FPL pick long term…Top player

Short and sweet this week but feeling better after a spot of post "Christmas shopping" bargain hunting..hope you liked my picks for the GW and the reduced budget…Good luck with the rotations and watching the fallers.

Cahill looks great value and nailed on at the moment for 5.7, especially with Luiz out. Paulinho is a player I expect to prove a very decent pick for his price by the end of the season, but I think he'll be frustrating for those who expect anything spectacular. When Spurs are this poor going forwards, it puts too much pressure on him as an attacking force. If and when their attackers eventually click, I think we won't see such a ridiculous number of shots from him, but his ability to arrive in the box at the right time will see him get more goals.

He's a great player (Paulinho) and i love to watch him but those Spurs players just aren't gelling as a team..AVB is starting to look like a desperste manager having played Adebayor and Paulinho up front in the past two weeks, it's all a bit of a puzzle really and i hope they turn it around because they have the talent and no doubt. It's started to become psychological now i think.

    The Bookies Picks:

These picks are something I'm going to be doing before each game week. This insight into the bookies gives us their views on who they think are most likely to keep a clean sheet or score a goal at any time. Their detailed research on statistics and data can surely help point us in the right direction to gain those points we all desire.

    To Keep a Clean Sheet:
    Arsenal: 1.61
    Liverpool: 1.90
    Chelsea: 2.10
    Southampton: 2.25
    Tottenham: 2.25
    Man United: 2.50
    Stoke: 2.50
    Man City: 2.62
    West Ham: 2.75
    Swansea: 3.00
    Cardiff: 3.50
    Crystal Palace: 3.75
    Newcastle: 4.33
    Aston Villa: 5.00
    Everton: 5.50
    Sunderland: 5.50
    Fulham: 6.00
    West Brom: 6.50
    Hull: 10.00
    Norwich: 11.00

To Score at Anytime: These players are from the captains poll.
    Luis Suarez: 1.53
    Sergio Aguero: 1.83
    Olivier Giroud: 2.05
    Robin Van Persie: 2.20
    Robert Soldado: 2.37
    Aaron Ramsey: 2.40
    Theo Walcott: 2.40
    Fernando Torres: 2.60
    Romelu Lukaku: 2.62
    Wayne Rooney: 2.62
    Peter Crouch: 2.75
    Steven Gerrard: 3.10
    Christian Benteke: 3.25
    Mesut Ozil: 3.25
    Eden Hazard: 3.50
    Adam Lallana: 3.75
    Samir Nasri: 4.33
    Paulinho: 4.50
    Oscar: Not Listed.

    The Bookies Team: The Rules
The bookies team formation will be 4-3-3 each week and it doesn't comply with FPL's budget constraints, as I feel that it'd change a lot of what I'm trying to portray. Also only one player per team in each position, so the maximum is not three per team, but four.
Goal Keeper: this will be selected from the team who has the lowest odds to keep a clean sheet.
Defenders: this will be selected from the four highest teams who have the lowest odds to keep a clean sheet - the keeper and one defender will be from the same team.
Midfielders + Forwards: this will be selected from the three midfielders and three forwards who have the lowest odds to score at anytime from the captain poll.

    Bet365's XI:
    Szczesny
    Mertesacker - Skrtel - Terry - Lovren
    Ramsey - Gerrard - Hazard
    Suarez - Aguero - Giroud

    The Bet:
I'm going to place bets on each of the GK + DEF's teams to keep a clean sheet, and all the MID's + FWD's to score at anytime as singles, along with the scouts picks to see which ones, if any, are more profitable.

The Bookies Picks Vs The Scout Picks Overall: Since Gameweek 12.

    The Bookies Picks Points: 128
    The Scout Picks Points: 123
The Bookies Picks Betting Profit/Loss: -£1.75
The Scout Picks Betting Profit/Loss: -£4.45

Haha! Tell them not to include so many Arsenal players in the captains poll then lol!

I base the team around the captains poll and clean sheet odds mainly. I'd love to be able to do it more accurate, but then it's become too complicated. Crouch could have been the bookies favourite to score. But I wouldn't want him in the team, as how many of us own Crouch?

Scout Picks take risks at times. Walters for one.

Caught Crouch's missus on Strictly (I love sequins btw) the other night. He is one jammy sod.

If only Swansea were converting the chances...
I need a 5.9 mid and Hernandez / De Guzman look tempting. But if teamsheet tonight says Ravel starts, I'll probably end up bringing him in.

    Everton

They have incredible fixtures in 2 GWs but if you have no room for Lukaku is their attack worth investing in?

No really unless Mirallas starts doing the business.

Me too.......Aguero or Suarez will make way (unless Rooney gets a YC and ban at just the right/wrong time).

I guess you've got two weeks to see if Mirallas loses out to Deulofeu. Otherwise, I can't see anything good.

Personally, I'm planning on getting Howard to go with Lukaku & Coleman

        I have Suarez, Rooney, Aguero

Can't really justify selling any for Lukaku

I think you could justify dropping Rooney for someone who will score very similarly for 3m less. Then again, it's not like you could spend that 3m on midfield at the moment 😀

What is a Differential defined by? under 5% ownership, in general? Obviously, it's a case-to-case basis in MLs.

It's mostly about the differential to the people ahead of you, so ownership in the top 50/100k or whatever.
