Nine down, one to go as Swansea welcome Hull to the Liberty and hand us some Monday night football to sink our teeth into. Michael Laudrup’s side have offered Fantasy managers a strong source of points at both ends of the pitch in front of their own fans – three of the last four home games have produced a clean sheet and three goals or more for the Welsh outfit:

Jonjo Shelvey’s 14-point haul in the previous Gameweek saw the former Liverpool man earn himself over 161,000 new owners prior to the weekend deadline, though with Curtis Davies back on board after serving a one-match suspension, the Tigers will be hoping to turn in a resilient display.

The big news is that Michu is fit and available to lead the line for the hosts after recovering from ankle and knee problems. He replaces Alvaro Vazquez up top in one of three changes by Laudrup, as Gerhard Tremmel and Nathan Dyer come in for Michel Vorm and Alex Pozuelo. Robbie Brady drops out for the Tigers after a series of disappointing displays since returning from injury.

As always, our Dugout Discussion chatroom remains open right through to the final whistle.

Are evertons fixtures really *that* amazing? Personally i think people are overkilling it with double/triple defence, those fixtures are by no means that easy.

They have much better fixtures than any other teams and are solid at the back + their defenders are cheap relative to the other big teams. What more could you want?

  3. Picking Differentials in FPL

Having read Test Eagles' post on differentials, i started thinking...

Differentials are an interesting topic. Here are my thoughts on the matter.

I think there are only 4 strikers worth owning at present, with Aguero and Suarez essential and Rooney and Lukaku as your options for the third spot.

If i had to pick a "differential" forward, Negredo (6.4%) would be my only consideration since City are in beast mode at home and he is scoring well.

Defence is another funny one. Not worth investing big money IMO. Chelsea and Spurs, who looked solid at first, are shaky. Utd are a mess, City don't travel so 50% of their games are a write off. I think Arsenal and Everton are worth covering and then just pick cheap options to rotate until one of the big sides begins a juggernaut run.

Midfield is where I recommend we look for differentials.
At 5.5% ownership or less, you have Coutinho, Michu, Walcott, Silva, Cazorla, Mata are the main premium mids with potential gains over mini league rivals. I'd look at my rivals' teams and go from there.

A midfield with, say, Michu, Walcott and Silva could prove fruitful in the coming weeks for those early adopters.

But in searching for a differential, be careful not to write of your best chances of high scoring GWs. Putting in Long or Crouch to get an edge on someone with the SAR combo is just FPL suicide.

Sneaky midfielders are the way forward, but differential status is relevant to ML.
I am still only one with hazard in mine.
But to balance that out I am only one with sessegnon.

      Great post Smokey.

Ultimately differentials are there for those who are miles behind in their mini leagues and need something to explosively elevate their rank. More often than not this results in a greater drop while the template team does its thing.

For those wanting Ozil, Michu, Walcott, Coutinho, Silva, etc. can't afford 3 expensive forwards and if they chose to use a Long or Crouch to fill a cheap spot then there are options... but you're right, you can't afford not to have SAR/L

absolutely, i think Lukaku is where you squeeze some cash for the midfield.

But with Koscielny and Distin covering the reliable defences and the likes of Chester, Ward, Barkley, Ravs etc offering money saving solutions for rotational prospects, most people should be able to invest 27m or so across the key three mids.

Differentials are good when there is no clear alternative. Taking strikers for example it would seem odd to pick any from Lukaku, Aguero, Rooney and Suarez at the moment. None are likely to be better picks at the moment. But apart from Hazard and Ozil there are no must have midfielders. This is why you can take a risk and go differential. #the same is true of cheap midfielders.

I think theres room for a little punt in MF simply because there are only really two outstanding players.

The masses own YaYa and Rambo who are not your typical FPL leaders and so one could get a run on these people if they catch one of the injured, normally big hitting, premium mids ahead of a return to form.

I think there isn't much to gain in defence and messing with the big hitting forwards is suicide.

Midfield is where you can afford a punt.

Forget that bias. It is an irrelevance as you can not write off a team away from home like you suggested because of a handful of results.

The fact is Citeh could/ probably will smash many teams away from home in the coming weeks and that makes your statement ridiculous..........As it is.

            There is no bias.

These are indisputable facts that i am presenting.

They have conceded 13 goals in their away games (all but one) in the PL this season, I missed the 0-0 with Stoke btw (apologies for that).

At home they have conceded just 2.

I am not saying they won't get clean sheets on the road, but i think investing in defenders around the 6m mark who don't give you confidence in at least half of their games is a bad investment.

If they sort the problem out, i'll be driving the Nastasic bus.

Taking that snippet out of its context is poor form. You ought to imply that it is only their defenders' value that i am questioning.

The fact they'll smash sides means little when considering the returns of defenders if they concede one or two goals along the way.

100% right about up front differentials. I think the same pretty much applies to midfield as well though. None of the options you listed are scoring good points yet. Until they are it's pointless to even consider them.

The key thing to remember is that your differentials need to be scoring more points than the more common options. If they aren't you're just falling behind - like Mark was at the start of the season.

        absolutely.

Those mids that I've listed are ones who are worth keeping a close eye on.

Walcott, Cazorla, Michu, and Silva in particular. They've all been well suited to FPL in the past and have been sidelined through injury for large parts of the season. High chance of them returning to their usually high standards.

Mata has a selection battle on his hands so he needs to nail down a key role for me. Coutinho was excellent at the tail end of last season. He's still a little unproven so again, i'd be more hesitant to punt on him as a differential.

      René Meulensteen's Fulham

Early days, but René looks like he may favour a 4-3-3, opting for the solidity of Parker, Sidwell and Karagounis in midfield. Against Villa, Fulham played with width; both Riise and Riether averaging a higher position on the pitch than Sidwell and Parker in the middle. Up top, Berbatov has a free role and is allowed to drop deep to collect the ball, while Kacanaklic and Dejagah give him options with inside forward runs and offer pace in behind. Both wingers took up a more advanced position than Berbatov on average, .

      http://espnfc.com/uk/en/gamecast/367345/gamecast.html?soccernet=true&cc=5739

My pick (and for those looking for a Brady replacement) is:

      Dejagah

      - priced 5.1m
      - just back from injury, started the last 2, averaging 4 PPG.
      - starting price 5.5m

Kacanaklic comes in at a more wallet friendly 4.6m but may be competing for pitch time with Damien Duff.

Agreed on the forwards, it seems silly to even consider anyone else!

At the back it is much the same, I am sticking with Everton and Arsenal right now as the only consistent source of clean sheets from now on (ignoring terrible initial fixtures for Arsenal)

I like the idea of getting in Walcott, so much so I have deliberately put money aside to switch Coutinho to him in two weeks time when Liverpool's fixtures become worse, and Arsenals become better. All of this can be dashed, but it is the only major differential I can think of. Same can be said for Silva.

That said, Fulham's fixtures become a lot nicer soon, and I hope that Kaciniklic can nail down a consistent starting role as another cheap starting option

    Hmm have a small dilemma...

    Mignolet
    Coleman Zabaleta Ivanovic
    Hazard Toure Ramsey Barkley
    Suarez Lukaku Remy

    Subs: Harper Dawson Shaw Kasami
    1 FT - £1.4m in bank

    - I wanted to get Howard for Mignolet but that would mean shipping out Barkley for -4.
    - I could get a 2nd GK in for Harper as he doesnt play??
    - Or improve Kasami or Dawson and stick with a GK that might not do well...

So who to get rid of first Ivan or Evra?

Neither can keep a clean sheet, Ivan has better fixtures but Evra actually gets attacking pts.

It sounds like Remy is no longer an option round these parts after two blanks. Southampton, Palace and Stoke in the next three with two homes in the busy period between boxing day and New Year. If you have him, you keep right?

Tough call Tommy, I'm not loving the GW19-26 fixtures. 50/50 to keep or swap. Depends who else you have I suppose.
Strikers are difficult as most good ones can score anywhere.
