Captain Sensible – Gameweek 17

Yes, we know this week’s battle for the armband is done and dusted. With 86% of the votes cast, Luis Suarez is the undisputable favourite as Liverpool prepare for the visit of Cardiff on Saturday. The Uruguayan is hunting his fifth successive double-figure haul at Anfield and it’ll be a brave, or perhaps desperate, Fantasy manager who goes against the grain. Once again, our midweek regular for members sifts through the statistics to ascertain whether there really is anyone else worth considering:

    Rooney is injured!

David Moyes said in his pre match interview that he hoped Rooney would be back for the busy Christmas schedule, but that was all he said.

Search rooney injury on google if u don't believe me!

  9. Can Suarez break the 300pt barrier?
    The3rdTurd

Something to break up the Rooney injury talk...

I've been looking at some of the standout FPL performances from years gone by, to see where Suarez might end up if he continues in the same vein and if he doesn't move abroad next month.

I don't have a complete breakdown available, but with that proviso in mind I have on record the following players who achieved scores of 200 FPL points or more going back to the 2002/3 season:

    2002/3
    Henry........271

    2003/4
    Henry........242
    Pires.........216
    Lampard....216

    2004/5
    Lampard....268
    Henry........228

    2005/6
    Henry........239
    Lampard....222

    2006/7
    Ronaldo.....245
    Lampard....202

    2007/8
    Ronaldo.....283
    Fabregas...205
    Gerrard......200
    Adebayor...200

    2008/9
    Lampard....226
    Gerrard......216
    Ronaldo.....206

    2009/10
    Lampard....284
    Drogba......242
    Rooney......224
    Fabregas...214
    Tevez........210

    2010/11
    (no one)

    2011/12
    RVP..........269
    Rooney......230
    Aguero......211
    Dempsey...209

    2012/13
    RVP..........262
    Bale..........249
    Mata.........212
    Suarez......212
    Cazorla.....205

So from my (admittedly incomplete) records, 200 points has been reached on 31 occasions in the last 11 seasons by 18 different players, with Lampard's 284 points in the 2009/10 season marking the high point (a season in which he picked up 22 goals, 17 FPL assists, 37 bonus points and a PPG of 7.9). All told, that's a pretty elite grouping of players.

And yet... coming back to Suarez, he's making that 200 point target look pretty average. He has already accrued 136 points from 11 games this season, for a PPG of 12.4. If he kept up that rate, 200 points would be within his grasp by the Villa game in GW22, and he would end the season on 408 points 😯

Assuming he isn't tempted to join La Liga next month, and even allowing for the inevitable regression, there must be a fairly decent chance of Suarez becoming the first 300-point FPL player in the history of the game. It would take a PPG of 'only' 7.5 from here on in to reach that threshold, which is definitely achievable.

Quite simply, the man is a machine right now.

        Yep, by 1 point.

Ronaldo's 283 (31 goals, 7 assists, 35 bonuses) was arguably more impressive as it was done on a PPG of 8.3 compared to Lampard's 7.5.

A lengthy Rooney injury would really shake up a few front lines.

I have 2 Fts and was planning to do Aguero and Sess to Negredo and Walcott.

Now I might take a hit to get Lukaku as well

I really think they should bring back the most captained statistic of every GW. But this time, they should limit the research to the top 100k. Now, I know of some ghost teams in the top 100k, but surely those teams won't affect the outcome of this. It would be also kind of cool if they could have a percentage of the players that were captained. I.e, the percent of the top 100k of players that captained the most capt player, the second, the third fourth and fifth. Would be a cool research IMO. I'm sure this week would be close to if not 100% of players captaining Suarez in the top 100k. What do you guys think of this?

Smarty pants does something similar if you need it. I dont see what difference it makes though, they only give you the stats after the deadline anyway.

Suarez, Lukaku, Negredo will leave some decent funds for midfield 🙂
