This Much We Know – Gameweek 19

Our last look at the previous round of action looks at the upturn in Tottenham’s attack, Arsenal’s resilience, Everton’s marauding right-back and the increasingly cloak-and-dagger sound bites from a certain Scotsman:

Moyes is becoming a Fantasy pantomime villain…
On December 23, the United manager reckoned it would be a ”Christmas miracle” if either Michael Carrick or Robin Van Persie would return before New Year. Three days later, Carrick climbed off the bench at Hull and has subsequently played the full 90 minutes against Norwich. Prior to the Canaries clash, Moyes made no indication of Wayne Rooney’s groin problem – leader of the Gameweek 19 Captain Poll, the United forward’s absence played a huge part in our Fantasy fortunes as many vice captains were called into play. We’ve already been through this with Moyes – he was ”hopeful” of Rooney’s availability to face West Ham and now he ”expects” his main forward to be ready for the visit of Tottenham. Since his installation at Old Trafford, it seems that Moyes’ press conferences are becoming increasingly cagey and unreliable and used as a vehicle for mind-games, full of bluffs and double-bluffs – it’s approaching parody now, where his next injury update could quite easily be answered by a chorus of “Oh no he isn’t” by the gathered fourth estate.

Sherwood is the shot in the arm Tottenham needed…
Under Andre Villas-Boas, Spurs failed to score more than twice in 16 league matches – since the Portuguese’s departure, they’ve already achieved this twice in three games. Tim Sherwood’s more adventurous approach has handed Tottenham fans something to smile about and also increased Fantasy managers’ attacking options as the winter wildcard approaches. A move to a front two has seen Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado produce a combined 41 points (23 and 18) in their three games together, whilst Christian Eriksen, at just 7.1 now, is finally starting to settle and looks key to Sherwood’s tactics, with plenty of leeway to roam from a starting berth on the left.

Gunners defence is key to their title bid…
Newcastle have already beaten the likes of Chelsea, United and Spurs this term but the in-form Magpies couldn’t find a way past Arsenal’s rearguard at St James’ Park. It’s eight clean sheets now for the league leaders, with all but one of those shut-outs arriving in the last 11 Gameweeks – take away their 6-3 mauling at City and 3-1 defeat to Villa on the first day of the season and Arsene Wenger’s side have conceded nine goals in the other 17 matches – a sign of their overall consistency. Whilst Theo Walcott is much sought after right now in light of injuries to Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, Arsenal’s defensive assets look equally enticing ahead of a superb run of five fixtures (CAR, avl, FUL, sou, CPL). Granted, Per Mertesacker looks the premium option at 6.2 but at just 5.3, Laurent Koscielny offers a relatively budget-friendly route into the best defence around.

Palace have the resilience to prosper…
No eyebrows would have been raised if the Eagles left the Etihad on the back of a drubbing last weekend. Many an armband was thrown the way of City players, with plenty of goals anticipated against Palace – instead, a move to 4-5-1 proved a canny decision by Tony Pulis as his side limited their hosts to their least impressive victory of the season. Palace now have four standout home games in the next six (NOR, STO, HUL, WBA) to continue the resilience which has harvested five clean sheets in nine – a move to central midfield makes Joel Ward, at 4.1, as the most attractive option as Pulis looks to grind out the results and secure his side’s safety.

Black Cats are up for the battle…
Two down at Cardiff with seven minutes left, Sunderland looked down and out at Cardiff on Saturday evening. Instead, the Black Cats clawed their way to a point with a late Steven Fletcher-inspired rally that had high-trousered Bluebirds’ owner Vincent Tan infamously booing the home side. Gus Poyet, on the other hand, can take plenty optimism from a draw obtained without either of his first-choice centre-backs. The Wearsiders have now racked up five clean sheets in Vito Mannone’s nine starts, with their defence set to come under increased investment with the wildcard. Like Palace, they also have four home games (AVL, SOU, STO, HUL) in addition to a trip to Fulham in the next six and, with options such as Ki Sung-Yeung and Fletcher in midfield and up top, they have the form and fixtures to pull themselves clear of the drop zone.

The midfield template looks set for a shake-up..
First, Aaron Ramsey limped off at West Ham on Boxing Day with a thigh injury. Yesterday, it was Mesut Ozil’s turn, as the Arsenal playmaker was forced out of the trip to Newcastle with a shoulder injury. With Yaya Toure warming the bench for City’s win over Palace, only two of the five most popular midfielders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game (Ross Barkley and Eden Hazard) took to the field at the weekend as our 15-man squads were tested to the limit. Already, over 500,000 Fantasy managers have sold Ramsey in just four days, whilst sales of Ozil have picked up pace (65,000) since yesterday’s absence. With City set for seven fixtures across all competitions in January, Manuel Pellegrini may well pick and choose Toure’s involvement with a little more care, handing his 43% owners food for thought ahead of the winter wildcard as many look to freshen up their midfields over the coming month.

Coleman is as essential as Suarez…
At the halfway stage of the season, the Toffees right-back has already racked up 110 points under Roberto Martinez – a full 18 points clear of any other defender in the FPL game. Whilst just six points separates first from second in both the goalkeeper and midfielder standings, Coleman – like Luis Suarez – looks head and shoulders above any other option in his classification. Five goals (all from open play) equals Leighton Baines’ highest goal haul over the last few seasons and, with Roberto Martinez’ tactics affording him plenty of attacking license, there’d be no surprise to see Coleman edge towards double figures come the end of the campaign. With the Merseysiders also joint-top with Arsenal for clean sheets, it’s not inconceivable that Coleman could break 200 points – food for thought for those non-owners deterred by a current 6.5 price tag that only looks set to escalate.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Posted this couple days ago to a different crowd, just wanna share it to you guys.

A simple review on probably one of the most important aspect of the Jan WC – the defense rotation. And with a template front 8 starting to emerge and our favourites big hitting attackers are in form, we may have to stick with uber defenders at the back.

Easy to say Coleman is essential at this moment – especially to those of us who got him early this season. So it leaves 4 slots (or 3 if you want to swap a mid-price midf to a defender) for a defense rotation. There are still a few bargains outside the top 7 teams, and while you may opt for the ‘premium’ ones in the team for goal threat, bonus, etc, I’m a fan of the cheapest-but-nailed-on ones.

I won’t focus too much on the rotation selection itself, but rather on the individual team’s defense rating and HOME fixtures (or easy ones) on GW 21 onwards.

Starting with the less goal conceded at home..

    [Hull]
    Defender Pick : Chester (3.9m)
Home Defense Rating: ***** (5 CS 6 GC).
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: SOT NEW WBA SWA
    Home Fixtures Rating : *
Good fixtures Streak : GW 22-33
Comment : Rock solid at home, one of the best in Europe probably due to having the best Home fixtures in the beginning half of the season (NOR CAR WHM AVL SUN CPL STO FUL !). Chester’s a bargain at 3.9.

    [STOKE] just gotta do it
Defender Pick : Pieters (4.9m) and monitor Wilson (4.3m)
Home Defense Rating : *****(4 CS 6 GC).
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: SWA WHM HUL NEW FUL
    Home Fixtures Rating: ***
Good fixtures Streak : GW 29-32
Comment : Cold night at Britania is striker’s worst nightmare. Can see a few CS coming especially on the later part.

    [Newcastle]
Defender Pick : Williamson (4.4m) and Debuchy (5.1m) for attacking threat.
Home Defense Rating: *** (3 CS 9 GC).
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: SUN AVL CPL SWA CAR
    Home Fixtures Rating: ****
Good fixtures Streak : GW 27-31
Comment : Unexpectedly a good defensive side. One of the on-form teams so Williamson is a bargain at that price. Had CS vs MU and Tottenham away from home.

    [Southampton]
    Defender Pick : Clyne (4.5m)
Home Defense Rating: **** (4 CS 9 GC).
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: WBA STO NOR NEW CAR
    Home Fixtures Rating: ***
    Good fixtures streak: GW 21-32
Comment : Everyone’s favourite defense in the beginning of the season although a bit off form lately. Decent side we know their capability. Quite decent away from home 3 CS in 9 and with good away fixtures coming too (sun ful hul whm cpl)

    [Norwich]
    Defender Pick : Olsson (4.2m)
    Home Defense Rating : *** (3 CS 10 GC).
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: HUL NEW STO SUN WBA
    Home Fixtures Rating : ***
Good Fixtures Streak : GW 22-33
Comment : Decent at home, rubbish away. Some very good fixtures at home.

    [West Brom]
    Defender Pick : Ridgewell (5.1m)
Home Defense Rating: ** (2 CS 12 GC).
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: FUL CAR WHM STO
    Home Fixtures Rating : **
Comment : Too unstable and expensive. I’d stay away.

    [West Ham]
Defender Pick : Demel (4.8m) – honestly idk ask Doos
Home Defense Rating: **** (4 CS 13 GC).
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: NEW SWA NOR SOT HUL CPL
    Home Fixtures Rating : ***
    Good fixtures Streak : -
Comment : Good side, although hard to determine which defender is nailed on. Solid away from home as well with few good away fixtures (car, avl, sto, sun) and streak of good fixtures GW 24 onwards. Yes please.

    [Crystal Palace]
    Defender Pick : Ward (4.1m)
    Home Defense Rating : **** (3 CS 13 GC)
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: STO HUL WBA SOT AVL
    Home Fixtures Rating : ***
Good Fixtures Streak : GW 20-25
    Comment : Crystal Pullis. Stoke v 2.0. That’s all.

    [Cardiff]
    Defender Pick : Turner (4.2m)
    Home Defense Rating : *** (3 CS 13 GC)
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: WHM NOR AVL HUL FUL CPL STO
    Home Fixtures Rating : *****
    Good Fixtures Streak : GW 24 – 36 (except 28 – 31)
Comment : My personal favourite. Had the hardest home fixtures in the first half of the season (were up against MCI, EVE, TOT, NEW, MUN, ARS) so no wonder their rating is not good. Expect them to tighten up at home in the later half.

    [Aston Villa]
    Defender Pick : Clark (4.5m)
    Home Defense Rating : ** (2 CS 13 GC)
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: WBA WHM NOR STO FUL SOT HUL
    Home Fixtures Rating : *****
Good fixtures Streak : Spread through the half
Comment : They perform better away from home due to easy opponents. So with those home fixtures, they should be able to keep a few CS as they did on away games against the same team. Another favourite of mine and most people will overlook their defensive capability.

    [Swansea]
    Defender Pick : Williams (4.8m)
    Home Defense Rating : ** (3 CS 14 GC)
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: FUL CAR CPL WBA NOR AVL SOT
    Home Fixtures Rating : *****
Good fixtures Streak : GW 23 til end of season
Comment : Hard to say. Their fixture is great but I’m not too keen

    [Sunderland]
    Defender Pick : Bardsley (4.4m)
    Home Defense Rating : * (2 CS 16 GC)
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: SOT STO HUL WBA CPL WHM CAR SWA
    Home Fixtures Rating : ******
Good fixtures Streak : Spread out except 26-29
Comment : Tricky this one. Bottom of the league and that’s reflected by their defensive performance so far but has tightened up recently with 3 CS in the last 3. If they have really have found their rhythm, then a defensive coverage from this team is simply a must have with those fixtures ahead. Bardsley in for me.

    [Fulham]
Defender Pick : Nobody.. err Hughes (4.2m)
    Home Defense Rating : * (2 CS 17 GC)
Upcoming Good Home Fixtures: NEW NOR HUL CPL
    Home Fixtures Rating : *
Good fixtures Streak : GW 30-32
Comment: Bad defense, bad fixtures, no streak. Just avoid.

*Ratings are my personal opinion but it’s pretty objective in my few.

So that’s that. Interesting pattern, really, from that small analysis. We can see the team that has been performing well, tend to have worse fixture than those who have performing below average.

Sticking to the trend, these teams should have similar CS amount at home at the end of the season, so the ‘bottom’ ones should get a few more CS from here on.

The interesting part is finding the right rotation and switches. To those who have Season Ticker, this would be the best time to fuly use it. Had a lot of fun finding rotations and transfers which allows me to get the best possible fixtures against the likes of low-scoring-on-away-games teams.

And just sharing, this is my current defense in my WC23 team.
    Boruc
    Coleman;
    SUN / CAR rotation;
CPL / WHM to AVL / STO rotation
Or Zabaleta with West Ham to Stoke in a 4-3-3.
Swansea and Newcastle rotation are in my watchlist.

You read all the way until here? You deserve a spud.

What I'm interested is the community's view on these teams' defense.

If you (somehow) read til the end, I posted by choice of defense pairing.

I rate Palace and Stoke defense at home pretty high.
Sunderland Cardiff too and their home rotation is heavenly.
And West Ham I expect to pick up defensive form.

Is there any team that you reckon would do well given a good home fixture?

Yes Villa is an interesting one. They've kept more CS away from home this first half - in particular against easier opponents. And had few hard home fixtures.

I reckon they will perform better at home defensively now that they got the fixtures to back that up.

But subjectively speaking, seeing their defensive performance after Pullis take over, they deserve a 4*.

The only thing I would add is that Cardiff's fixtures are quite tough over January, but improve thereafter. Ideal for the late wildcard, but less so for the earlybirds.

    Return of the Rav?

With Silva out, not sure I want to play JWP so am thinking of offloading him.

Sterling. I can just afford and I think he has the most points potential out of the other candidates. Is he nailed on though? Been some talk of him being dropped for Sturridge plus Gerrard is back soon. Surely he'll play though?

Ravel. Sullivan been quoted saying he expects him to play v Fulham. Would love to have him back in my team, did well for me before.

Other options: Ki, Bannan, Mutch, Whittingham, Januzaj, Kasami. Who do you think is the best option? Already have Redmond.

Whittingham should be the obvious choice here because of his set pieces, but upcoming fixtures for Cardiff are tough, one of the main reasons why i want to get rid of Marshall pretty soon.

Bannan could serve you well, based on his next opponents.

I think Sterling will play. No worries of burnout, he'll be on the bench soon enough but not yet.

Ravel - Sounds like Big Fat Sam is under pressure, likely the owners are saying to play him (I'm making this up, but have a feeling).

Replacement for JWP depends on when you want to WC. Can't answer without that.

Since Gw8, Hazard has scored 18,2,2,13,10,2,17,2,5,3,10,10. I was lucky enough to get him in Gw8 itself and he has been immense. One can talk about the fact that he might be a flat track bully but he scored against Pool at home and I wouldn't put it past him to score against anyone for that matter. He for one is 100% staying in my team. He and Walcott are two players you have to keep through their blanks because you know they are capable of exploding against anyone.

I usually evaluate my players over 4 week periods and if they are performing under par they get ditched. The only exception is if they have had really difficult fixtures then I may give them another chance to prove themselves.

I don't know why, but im in the mood for punts.

Thinking of Silva > Gerrard, don't wanna risk not having 11 decent players. Obviously gonna need some confirmation before i do it.

Also want to do either Lukaku -> Soldado or Lukaku -> Hooper + Rooney -> RvP. Could be a massive move if he starts scoring at such an low ownership. Probably gonna need a couple good punts to breach top 1k i'd guess.

I haven't done any transfers like that, i just feel in the mood! Im probably ending up with a safe swap from Silva to Yaya anyways.
