PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 20

The Player Picks for our weekly Fantasy Football game are brought to you this Tuesday lunchtime as we prepare for 10 fixtures over New Year’s Day. With prime home games for Arsenal and Liverpool against Cardiff and Hull respectively, Theo Walcott and Luis Suarez are on our radars. We scour the PlayON Player Price List for potential bargains in order to save cash for our premium priced pair:

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a PlayON player, read on for our selection of this week’s targets…

Goalkeeper – David Stockdale
Yes, he may have conceded six goals away to Hull but the Fulham stopper will set you back a mere 6.6m for a home game against West Ham. With Maarten Stekelenburg still sidelined through injury, Stockdale will face a Hammers side with just two goals in their last three road trips and enables us to free up funds to be spent elsewhere. Coming in at 6.2m, Stoke’s Tomas Sorenson is even easier on the budget if you reckon he can keep Everton at bay at the Britannia but if but if you’re willing to splash the cash, Joe Hart is still relatively inexpensive at 8.7m as City roll up to Swansea.

Defence – Leighton Baines
Having recovered from a toe injury, the Everton defender ousted Bryan Oviedo from the left-back berth at home to Southampton last weekend. Baines will set you back a bargain 7.3m for the Toffees visit to injury-hit Stoke on Wednesday – given that Seamus Coleman is 11.5m, Baines’ value catches the eye, with set-pieces and spot-kicks bolstering his appeal at the Britannia. Daniel Agger looks the likeliest to benefit from Mamadou Sakho’s hamstring problem and comes in at just 8.0m for Liverpool’s home encounter against a Hull side that have scored twice in their last three on the road. With Wes Brown suspended and John O’Shea likely to miss out again with a shoulder complaint, Sunderland’s Samba Diakite (8.5m) affords us a kindly-priced route into a defence with three clean sheets in the last four fixtures – the Black Cats entertain an Aston Villa side that have only scored twice in the previous five league matches.

Midfield – Santi Cazorla
With Mesut Ozil sidelined due to a shoulder complaint, the little Spaniard seems poised for a third consecutive start as Arsenal welcome Cardiff to the Emirates. If you don’t have the budget for 10.2m priced Walcott (who is set for a late fitness test) or even if you fancy loading up on the league leaders, Cazorla comes in at 8.7m for tomorrow’s showdown, with his eye for a long range effort benefitting from the PlayON scoring matrix. If you’re on the lookout for a punt, Steve Gerrard could return from a hamstring problem against Hull, according to Brendan Rodgers and is available for 8.6m, whilst Manchester United’s Michael Carrick is, like Stockdale, another budget “enabler”. Priced at 6.6m, Carrick’s tackles and interceptions will keep his tally ticking over and helps save the pennies ahead of a home clash with former club Spurs.

Forward – Steven Fletcher
The catalyst for Sunderland’s late comeback draw at Cardiff last weekend, Fletcher is expected to return to the starting XI for a vital home game with Villa. Bearing in mind the visitors have injury and suspension concerns in defence ahead of their trip to the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats frontman – who comes in at 10.6m – will be confident of breaching a backline that has conceded twice in each of their last four road trips. Palace’s Marouane Chamakh is also listed in the sub 11.0m price bracket this week. The 10.8m priced Moroccan welcomes Norwich to Selhurst Park and has scored in two of his last three home appearances, whilst Arsenal’s Lukas Podolski looks a real option after Olivier Giroud was ruled out earlier this morning. With a number of doubts in midfield, though, the German could still be fielded on the left flank but at a mere 8.9m, he has the potential to pay off considerably.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly Fantasy Football for free or for cash, so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can keep changing your team right up to two hours before the first kick-off – 10.45 on New Year’s Day), you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 53% win rate up to this point.

New Year’s Day Bounty – £25 FREE

PlayON has a special bounty offer in place for the New Year’s Day games. One person who beats OptaJoe in a £1 one-on-one game will win £25 of free credit so challenge OptaJoe now to be in with a chance of winning the free £25.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for bragging rights only or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Indeed. Paulinho served a three match ban for a debatable high foot. He will now be out for at least a month due to this thuggery and the FA do cock all.

Who to play; Burner (ars) or Clyne (CHE)? At the moment my line-up is

    Howard
    Mert Coleman Ward Clyne
    Wally(vc) Haz Whitt
    Suarez(c) Negredo Lukaku
    Subs: Camp Burner Ravel Silva
    0FT, £0.7 bank

Alternative would be to take a hit to do Ravel > Sterling/Puncheon/Barkley and play them over a defender, but I can't afford the 4pts...

Evs (FFS) & spiderm4tt (FISO); currently the best managers?

Evs from FFS finished 5th last year, and this season is currently 1,099th.
    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/8486/history

spiderm4tt from FISO finished 1st last year, and this season is currently 4,333rd.
    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/2122/history

In terms of current form, I don't think there are any managers that can beat those stats.

Coincidence? Or is it insane skill?

P.S. Hot Topic to hear some interesting replies on this? 🙂

Knowing Evs and having interviewed Matt I'd say its largely skill. They both stick to tried and tested rules like not captaining a defender and not taking too many hits. They both get solid consistent players in. But they also know when to take a risk on a captaincy for example or a differential.

Evs for example last gameweek was trumpeting Campbell in the scout picks. Matt probably does the same thing among his colleagues and friends with other players.

I think if you keep hits to a minimum, follow team news, stick largely to a template team of consistent scorers spinkled with a few cheaper punts and take advantage of double gameweeks then top 20K minimum should be very achievable.

Of course there are elements of luck involved as there are with say poker, but you can still ply your trade and swing the odds in your favour. Spotting bargains, players and teams repeating styles and form seen before, gambling big at the right times, knowing when a hit is worth it or not.

Thanks for the kind words Gents (although I am a little embarrassed)

To be honest no secret formula, just try and pick the players you think are from the best teams and have the best fixtures and take it from there.

I very much dislike taking hits though, like this week...

I can field XI but should I go Ozil ➡ Nasri (-4pts) to strengthen, tricky init??

To answer you question...obviously it's some "skill", or rather a tried and tested "formula" that works for these guys.

I don't won't to go on to much regarding the "skill" part, as it often leads to the "luck" aspect being disregarded.

More interesting to me is the players that have done great in the past for a season that have fallen of the wagon a bit shortly thereafter...eg:

      Canadian football:

Number one tip dont make transfers lightly

For me, putting luck to one side, it is all about trying to get your team into a rhythm. What I mean by that is both taking hits and not taking hits can be habitual. So good planning to get into a rhythm of avoiding hits works well, and your team normally looks after itself to an extent.

Avoid kneejurks, but taking the odd early transfer risk for riding a price rise is okay, as well as the odd hit.

Finally, don't be blind to any possible player. You may consistently overlook a certain player habitually and then suddenly realise later that he was a good choice at the time. So be open to any possibility. Absorb the views of as many as you can and then make your own informed decision.

SOME JANUARY WILDCARD BARGAIN/DIFFERENTIAL OPTIONS RETURNING FROM INJURY

    Keepers:
    BORUC £4.7 - 11.2% ownership (mostly dead) - 4.5points per game - Expected return* 11th Jan - Excellent fixtures (GW24-31)
Since Boruc's hand injury, Southampton's defensive resolve has all but disappeared, however a fantastic run of fixtures, allied with the return of Schniederlein and Wanyama to the side, could well lead to a run of clean sheets like the one that had everyone dancing in the first 8 game weeks or so.

    Defence:
    VERTONGHEN £7 - 4.7% - 4.6 ppg - 19th Jan - Difficult fixtures
Tipped by many before the start of the season to join Baines at the summit of the defenders rankings, injuries have blighted the big Belgian's prospects so far. However, when Vertonghen was in the side, Tottenham had the best defensive record in the league, although whether this solidarity will return with Tim Sherwood at the helm remains to be seen. Attacking returns and bonus points should be almost guaranteed if he doesn't pick up any more injuries, and risk of rotation is 0. For those with spare bucks to spend at the back, there are few better options.

    ENRIQUE £5.6 - 4.1% - 4.4ppg - 18th Jan - Average fixtures
Another who has failed to live up to expectations so far, Enrique could be a differential alternative to Coleman, Baines et al. With Suarez and Sturridge to finish his crosses and one of the league's best keepers keeping them out behind him, Enrique will come on to many fantasy players' radars, assuming that is he can reclaim his place.

    NASTASIC £5.1 - 0.7% - 4ppg - Now - Excellent fixtures
Anyone who has watched Demichellis 'defend' for Manchester City at centre-back will need no reassurances as to Nastasic's likely game-time. Pelligrini's men have missed him badly, shipping goals right left and centre… mostly centre, where opponents were allowed to stroll past Demichellis at will. He will have the best defender in the league playing alongside him, and an in-form Joe Hart mopping up any mistakes - as long as City don't sign another centre-back in the window, Nastasic looks to be a real bargain.

    REID £4.8 - 2.2% - 5.1ppg - 29th Jan - Excellent fixtures
Ok, West Ham aren't exactly flying high in the league, but quietly they have hoovered up the joint-most clean sheets (8) in the division. For me, Reid is one of the most under-rated players in the game, and there is no doubt West Ham are a much tougher proposition with him in the side. He has a higher PPG rating than Jagielka, Koscielny and Zabaleta among others. His attacking potential is always there at set pieces, and he hoovers up the bonus points as well. Couple this with the likelihood that West Ham should pick up say 3-5 clean sheets in GW24-31, and you have a solid mid/low-priced option.

    Midfielders:
    GERRARD £8.7 - 4.7% - 5.1ppg - 1st Jan - Average fixtures
Set piece specialist, box-to-box midfielder, reliable goalscorer: basically Gerrard is a cheaper, less-owned Yaya. A real candidate for a premium midfield slot.

    MICHU £8.5 - 5.6% - 3.6ppg - 1st Feb - Average fixtures
I know, I know, yes I have seen him play this season, but if he CAN replicate anything like the form he was showing this time last year… A long shot perhaps, but worth monitoring.

    BRADY £4.8 - 5.0% - 3.6ppg - 1st Jan - Good fixtures
One of only a few options for our 5th mid spots, Brady for me is a better asset than both Barkley and Januzaj. On penalties, cheaper, and with a lower ownership, although his injury record is a concern.

    CAZORLA £9.5 - 2.0% - 3.5ppg - Now - Poor fixtures
With both Ozil and Ramsey struggling to maintain their early season form and picking up niggles, it may be time to look elsewhere in the leaders' midfield. More proven than the aforementioned two, and more consistent than Walcott, the mercurial Spaniard is my tip to impose himself on the fantasy scene in the next few weeks. But then I would say that - he is my GW20 captain.

PAULINHO £6.6 (dropping - probably more like £6.4 by the end of Jan) - 6.0% (again, plummeting) - 3.5ppg - 29th Jan - Poor fixtures
For those looking for a braver, more budget-friendly alternative to Lallana, Cabaye, or Ramsey, this could be your man. The Brazilian has been of Spurs' few bright sparks this season, and he will surely only get better as he becomes more accustomed with English football.

    TOWNSEND £5.1 - 2.3% - 2.3ppg - 11th Jan - Poor fixtures
I must say I am not a fan of the one-foot wonder, but his kind price tag and differential status may tempt some managers.

    Forwards:
    AGUERO £12 (still dropping - £11.8 when the window shuts?) - 8.7% (dropping, largely dead) - 7.8ppg - 29th Jan - Very Easy fixtures
Let's start with the obvious. If not for a certain racist South-American cannibal, we would be talking about the Argentine as one of the best players in the world right now. He is just as explosive as Suarez and as viable as a captaincy option, and he will now once again have Silva to assist him.

    VAN PERSIE £13.6 - 15.7% (largely dead) - 6ppg - 1st Jan - Fairly Poor fixtures
We all know what the man can do.

    STURRIDGE £9.1 - 11.2% (largely dead) - 6.4ppg - 5th Jan - Average fixtures
Ok, so he won't score you as much as Suarez. So? Does that mean he is not a viable option? What's to stop you having both? For my money Sturridge is much better value than Rooney and Lukaku, and should be a shoo-in, if you can afford it, to most 3rd striker spots.

    DEULOLOFEULOFO (don't ask) £5.4 - 0.6% - 2.2ppg - 28th Jan - Easy fixtures
Can you imagine the hype about this boy if he was English? Incredibly talented and with undoubtedly a massive future in the game, Martinez is clearly a fan and has already shown he is prepared to give youth a chance. Gametime then shouldn't be too much of an issue with the busiest period of fixtures now behind us, especially given Mirallas' poor form. And he will only get better.

    ***IMPORTANT NOTE***
As you may have noticed, there is an astonishing number of potentially massive fantasy assets returning to action in the last 2 or 3 weeks of January. I would therefore urge you not to press the Wildcard button until after GW23. There is also the factor of new signings - you don't want to have to be taking hits to get in Arsenal's star striker, Radamel Falcao (you heard it here first), or United's new wonder kid Marco Reus (I can dream, can't I?) So no matter how tempting it may be: hold your trigger fingers until the end of the month.

*Expected return dates from http://www.physioroom.com - usually pretty accurate.

Why do people get lengthy bans for calling someone a little black fella, shorter bans for calling them a f*****g black b*****d, but nothing at all for calling them a racist South American cannibal? The world has gone mad!

calling somebody a racist who was proven to be racist, is not racist. what I said was factually correct, except the cannibal bit. I do not appreciate being called a racist so I would think twice about it in the future.

I wasn't calling you a racist - I was just suggesting that in my opinion your phrase was as bad as Suarez's, though not as bad as John Terry's.

John Terry's phrase was a racist one, but that was not just because it included the word 'black', but because its context between two other unacceptable words made it quite clear that he intended it to be derogatory.

Suárez is mixed race, with a black grandfather. Suárez's grandmother used to call her husband "Mi Negrito", and blamed that for the alleged words her grandson used. He is not a racist.

'Negrito' is a Spanish word meaning 'little black fella' that is often used in Latin America as a sign of affection, but might sometimes also be used as a term of abuse - it all depends on the context. The authorities decided that it must have been an abusive term since Evra had already insulted him by calling him an abusive word meaning South American, but I do not believe that Suarez intended it as such. He is a happy-go-lucky character who enjoys a bit of banter, but who sometimes underestimates the extent to which his actions or words might be exaggerated or misunderstood in this country (and so did the Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish). The word 'negrito' had probably been used by both Liverpool and United players in their own training sessions without any offence being taken, but Evra decided to take advantage of Suarez's naivety (Evra also had previous in making unfounded racist allegations, viz. the earlier incident with the Chelsea groundsman). The earlier Terry case (which had still not been dealt with at the time) did not help, nor did Sepp Blatter's comments or Liverpool's reactions to the accusations, so the authorities decided to make an example of him, but in my opinion a fairer verdict would have been a one match ban for both players, coupled with a warning that any repeat would be dealt with far more severely. Evra was also extremely lucky to receive no punishment for dancing around in front of Suarez singing 'na na na na na' at the end of the next match between their teams.

I don't object as strongly to your calling him a cannibal. I take that as a jokey exaggeration, and there is no excuse for biting another player. Even though the bite was more like a kiss and did not break the skin, it set a quite unacceptable example to young players and was rightly punished by another long ban. I would hope that he received the best psychological counselling during that second ban, and was also warned by his manager that he must never repeat such actions in the future, and that he must refuse to be wound up by his opponents and just concentrate on scoring lots of goals, something at which he is now one of the world's best.

Suarez was not proven being a racist, he was proven calling someone something racist. BIG difference. I guess we have all said something racist, homophobic or sexist, but that doesn't automatically make us into racists, sexists or homophobes, does it? We can all have a slip of the tongue.
Great post otherwise. Too bad you couldn't help degrading yourself by using the words you used.

I have been looking at fixtures over the next 8 weeks and am planning on playing my WC tomorrow to try and get loads of price rises. However, even if I do not get the rises I want then I can still make this team.

Would really appreciate it if you could take a look and tell me if I could make any improvements.

    McGregor | Gazzaniga

    Koscielny | Kolarov | Coleman | Chester | Ward

    Gerard | Silva | Walcott | Hazard | Mutch

    Rooney | Suarez | Lukaku

0.7M left in bank (Want to keep this free for Aguero transfer so would only have 0.1M spare)

When fit I intend on swapping Kolarov -> Nastasic & Rooney -> Aguero. However, may downgrade a midfielder instead and have Rooney | Aguero | Suarez up front.

I am currently debating between Cazorla, Gerrard and Coutinho for a 1/2 week punt before the wildcard

Not sure on Gerrard, as I need players that will start, due to my injuries.

      Caz or Oscar possibly...

I see Distin has been yellow flagged, anybody know if he's now unlikely to play tomorrow?

I would have thought he would with Jags out...
