Walcott Ruled out for Six Months

Arsenal have this evening confirmed Theo Walcott has been sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained in Saturday evening’s cup clash with Tottenham.

The winger was stretchered off towards the end of the 2-0 win and underwent scans on the problem earlier today. The Gunners issued the following update on their official website:

“After coming off injured in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur, the Club regrettably announces that Theo Walcott has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. Theo will have surgery in London in the near future and is expected to be out for at least six months, therefore missing the remainder of the season and the World Cup in Brazil in the summer. Everyone at Arsenal wishes Theo a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him back on a football pitch as soon as possible.”

The news is a massive blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations and Fantasy managers alike. Ironically, Walcott’s Fantasy potential looked to have stepped up a notch at the weekend, too – Arsene Wenger chose to field him as the lone striker in the north London derby, with Olivier Giroud sidelined through illness and Nicklas Bendtner out with an ankle injury.

Having returned from abdominal surgery in late November, Walcott was tentatively eased back into the first-team and produced a pair of assists over four sub appearances. From Gameweek 16 onwards, though, he racked up 47 points over just five starts, with doubles against City and West Ham followed by an assist against Newcastle and goal at home to Cardiff.

The bandwagon was at full pace, with almost 120,000 FPL managers snapping up his services prior to the last two deadlines, as Walcott’s price leapt from 9.1 to 9.6. Indeed, over 50,000 have already transferred the winger in this week alone.

From a Fantasy perspective, today’s news may even prove the tipping point for those who have so far resisted the temptation of playing the winter wildcard early. Walcott’s absence will have a significant effect on many a Fantasy plan, forcing us back to the drawing board for yet another revision.

With games against Villa, Fulham, Southampton and Palace in the next four, Arsenal’s upcoming schedule bodes well for Fantasy returns and is likely to see many turn to Mesut Ozil, with Santi Cazorla also a potential target until Aaron Ramsey returns from a thigh injury. The German has plummeted in price from 10.8 down to 9.9 yet has averaged an impressive 6.3 points per game – joint-top for midfielders – and looks the prime target for current Walcott owners looking to take advantage of those fixtures.

Alternatively, for those unwilling to opt for Yaya Toure as a route into City’s goal potential, now may be the time to turn to David Silva. The pair have mirrored Ozil’s 6.3 ppg but the Spaniard, with an ownership of just 5% and price of 9.3 to his team-mate’s 10.1, may well be the ideal trade.

Ozil clearly going to be biggest gainer from the Walcott news, so if you haven't played your WC yet then get in Ozil for a short term gain in value. He's a good a bet as Yaya, Silva, Hazard, Ramsey over next 2 or 3 GW's. Who knows which one of those is going to get double figure returns in any given GW.

Then in 3 GW's hit that WC button and sort out whole team, when we have news on Ramsey, see how Wenger rearranges team again with Walcott back out and hopefully Aguero is back and a cheap striker/midfielder has emerged.

Unfortunately I'm 0.2m short of a straight Walcott to Ozil swap, so probably taking a hit for Rooney > JRod as well.

      yes I think so

I'm guessing you bought at 9.2?

If so a CP of 9.4 = SP of 9.3

      a CP of 9.6 = SP of 9.4

      so yes it will

It depends on your purchase price.

Get his full price, and the price you bought him for.

Add the two numbers after the decimal points.

      Even = Drop by 0.1
      Odd = No drop

So if it is odd(like mine) a 0.3 drop would only lose 0.1 🙂

It makes perfect sense. You get 0.1 for every 0.2 rise.

9.1 rise to 9.3, SP now at 9.2

9.3 rise to 9.5, SP now at 9.3

Rose for just 0.1 more from 9.5 to 9.6, so SP hadnt changed the third time.

The January Wildcard - Defensive Decisions.

Fantasy football managers are now armed with the January wildcard, and whilst most of us know the attacking targets that we want, I thought I'd take a look into which fixtures managers should be on the look out for when selecting their choice of defenders, and which teams have the best fixtures suited to them for the remainder of the season.

Frisking the Fixtures - The Weak Attacking Teams.

    Cardiff:
    - Failed to score in 10 matches, the joint highest. 4 home, 6 away.
    - Scored the least amount of away goals, 5.
    - They have the lowest goals scored per away game in any English professional football league.
    - Second lowest home goals scored, 8.
    - Lowest shots inside the box in total and at home, 104, 47.
    - Lowest shots on target in total and at home, 56, 30.
    - Lowest shots inside the box in the last 6 games, 30.

    Aston Villa:
    - Failed to score in 9 matches. 6 home, 3 away.
    - Scored the least amount of goals at home, 7.
    - Only Yeovil has a worst 'goals scored per home game' in any English professional football league.
    - Second lowest shots inside the box, 112.
    - Joint third lowest shots inside the box at home, 56.

    Sunderland:
    - Failed to score in 9 games. 3 home, 6 away.
    - Scored the least amount of away goals, 5.
    - They have the lowest goals scored per away game in any English professional football league.
    - Third lowest shots on target in total, 63.
    - Joint third lowest shots inside the box at home, 56.
    - They've had one more shot on target at home than the team who has the lowest, 31.

    Stoke:
    - Failed to score in 9 matches. 4 home, 5 away.
    - Second lowest shots on target, 60.
    - Joint lowest shots on target at home, 30.
    - Second lowest shots inside the box in the last 6 games, 32.
    - Lowest shots on target in the last 6, 14.

    Fulham:
    - Failed to score in 6 matches, all away.
    - Second lowest shots inside the box in total, 112.
    - Lowest shots on target away, 22.

    Crystal Palace:
    - Failed to score in 10 matches, the joint highest. 5 home, 5 away.
    - They've scored one more goal at home than the team who's scored the least, 8.
    - Scored the least amount of away goals, 5.
    - They have the lowest goals scored per away game in any English professional football league.
    - They've scored the least amount of goals in total, 13.
    - They have the lowest goals scored per game in any English professional football league.
    - Second lowest shots inside the box in total, 112.
    - Second lowest shots inside the box at home, 54.

    West Ham:
    - Failed to score in 9 matches. 4 home, 5 away.
    - Third lowest shots on target, 63.
    - Second lowest shots inside the box in the last 6 games, 32.

    Swansea:
    - Failed to score in 6 matches 1 home, 5 away.
    - Second lowest shots inside the box in the last 6 games, 32.
    - Second lowest shots on target in the last 6 games, 15.

    Hull:
    - Failed to score in 8 matches. 3 home, 5 away.
    - 1 more shot on target away, than the lowest, 23.
    - Third lowest shots inside the box away, 50.

These are the 9 fixtures we should really be on the look out for. Of course clean sheets aren't guaranteed in these matches though. I also cross referenced these teams with the season ticker to see which teams play these the most overall and at home.

Frisking the Fixtures - Teams Against the Weak '9'.

I looked into the fixtures after the January wildcard can not be played anymore (gameweek 24) right up until the end of the season. I've just included the teams which play those 9 teams the most in total and at home.

CARDIFF - 7 in total. 6 at home, which is the most in the league.
SOUTHAMPTON - 9 in total, which is the most in the league. Only 3 at home.
MAN CITY - 8 in total, 5 at home.
WEST BROM - 9 in total, which is the most in the league. 4 at home.
NEWCASTLE - 8 in total, 5 at home.
EVERTON - 8 in total, 5 at home.
ASTON VILLA - 8 in total, 5 at home.
SUNDERLAND - 6 in total, 5 at home.
TOTTENHAM - 9 in total, but only 2 at home.

    4.0 Chesney

    Mert Demel Rat Vlaar Chester

    Hazard Lallana Silva Özil Colback

What do you reckon? Replace Lallana with Baines(and swap Chester for a cheap mid)?

Got Silva, Hazard, Wally, Pozuelo, Januzaj and a team value of £110.5m and contemplating the WC. Ozil and Oscar rising at huge rates and Eriksen about to hit 100% too. Wondering what is the best way to get some value out of this? Potential WC I am looking at now:

    Szczesny (K.Davis)

    Azpilicueta Kocielny Nastasic (Evans Chester)

    Hazard Ozil Silva Oscar (Pozuelo)

    Suarez Rooney Bony

Could get a few price rises out of it. Thoughts?

I'd put Boruc in now - saves on having to use a FT later?

could do but I can't find any direct info about him..have you got any reliable links ?..I'd sooner have a keeper and back up than a keeper and a croc.

Hello, I am in some sort of dilemma here, walcott got injured and if I replace him I would need to take a hit, so is it worth taking the hit or should I just play my WC (since my WC draft cannot afford to lose money on walcott)? Problem with my WC is it includes players yet to return from injury, (gerrard and aguero). Also how does this sound for a WC team planning on playing 3-5-2 with a power 5

    Mannone. Ben Davies.
    Clyne. Gabbi. Turner. Coleman. Chester.
    Ozil. Hazard. Silva. Gerrard. Cabaye.
    Suarez. Aguero. Bera.

    Thanks for your time.

On the picture of the article above Wally is showing two fingers like saying: it will be two quarters lads ... only two quarters...

I thought he'd spotted someone in the crowd he fancied and the fingers were a signal of intent.

So, let's see if you got this right.

I've already taken a 4 point hit this gameweek (took Walcott out and reinserted Özil). Will that hit be erased if I play the wildcard instead?

I decided I'm quite happy with the team as it is so the 4 point hit seems a bit unnecessary at this point.

Yeah...you're probably right. I'm having huge problems to decide. There's just so many injured players right now that I don't see many options to change the team. I guess I'll save the WC anyway then. Thanks!

Such a shame for Walcott. I hate to see players missing out on big competitions that don't come around very often in a career.

That said, he is a millionaire that gets to play football for a living, so I don't feel too sorry for him.

From a personal perspective I feel sorry for me as Walcott helped me overturn a 70 point minileague deficit.

    Real issue at hand here:

    A)Soldado

    or

    B) Bony

    for 3rd striker?

I am tempted by Soldado myself. I know he has not given any reason for optimism, I just feel that there must be more to him than we have seen.
