Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

    Getting Ozil?

Do it now or watch 15,000+ transfers in being wasted tomorrow if he doesn't rise. That could make you extra profit on him.

I'm waiting - he won't get to 100% before the deadline.

Just really hoping FPL is accurate. 🙂 Sometimes players have to be a lot over 100%, sometimes they go up when they're under. Risking it! 😯

I see that there is a lot of love for Özil tonight ... 😉

The Özil in red is dancing with fire, one on one,
There's nobody there, it's just him and ball,
It's where I want to be,
But I hardly know this beauty on pitchside,
    I'll never forget the way you looked that night;

I've never seen you passing so gorgeous as you did that night,
I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing,
I've never seen so many people want to be there on your side,
And when you turned the back and smiled, it took my breath away,
And I have never had such a feeling,
    Such a feeling of complete and utter love, as I did that night;

The Özil in red is dancing with the opposition, they seek,
There's nobody there, he's past and is free,
It's where I want to be,
But I hardly know this beauty on pitchside,
    I'll never forget the way you looked that night;

'll never forget the way you looked that night.
The Özil in red, the Özil in red,
The Özil in red, my Özil in red,

    I love you

Imagining I was to wildcard today, would a midfield of Ozil + Eriksen/Hazard/Ozil/Puncheon and forward line of JRod + Suarez/Lukaku be a better option than having Rooney (already in team) and Mutch (instead of Ozil/JRod) - has to be right?

    (A) Current WC team:

    GK: Davis, Boruc
DEF: Terry, Koscielny, Burner (Ward) (Chester)
MID: Hazard, Silva, Ozil, Eriksen (Colback)
    ATT: Lukaku, Suarez, JRod

With 3.6 itb to do lukaku-> Aguero whenever he is back with .4 spare. Alternatively, if say Chelsea bring in a big name striker I may consider him over Aguero.

    (B) UPDATED WC team:

    GK: Davis, Boruc
DEF: Terry, Koscielny, Burner (Ward) (Chester)
MID: Hazard, Silva, Ozil, GERRARD (Colback)
    ATT: Lukaku, Suarez, JROD

The difference being that once aguero comes back, I have enough in the bank to get him once I downgrade my worst performing premium mid to the best performing mid-priced mid or Ramsey.

    Thoughts?

    The secret 'DZ only' rotation

Nobody has posted much about this rotation (I believe... if so - I didn't see it), and It is only 9.1m (One of the cheapest available),

    The keepers: Boruc + Mannone

    The fixtures to GW38:
WBA SOT/sun STO ful/new STO hul whm WBA cry NOR/CRY nor NEW tot CAR avl CAR swa SWA

(Where there is a / it is due to there being a 'decision' all others are fairly clear cut on who to bench based on current form of teams)

If Boruc is not back for 2 weeks then Mannone will have to play vs ful, SOT, STO and then you can play Boruc against Fulham in GW24, so either way, this plan works provided you believe (As I do) that Boruc will stroll back into Southampton and continue his fantastic form.

Bed time for me, good night...(repost, bottom of last page)

I don't want to waste an FT on a goalkeeper, so i'm going with Boruc - as I mentioned at the bottom of the post, I can last until 12/02/14 (1 month) with just Mannone, but expect Boruc to be in this week or next week, which would make the rotation more viable.

Incidentally, another big key to their defensive stability is Wanyama's presence in midfield. I'll probably go with Marshall/Mannone for now, and transfer the former out when Boruc and Big Vic are both back.

    Marshall - Mannone
    Coleman - Koscielny - Nastasic - Gabbidon - Chester
    Ozil - Hazard - Silva - Gerrard - Mutch
    Suarez - Adebayor - Rodriguez

(Adebayor & Ozil -> Aguero & Ramsey when both fit)

Gnabry for a punt. Such low ownership that if he gets a couple of starts in Theo's absence (I happen to think he might given his performance in previous PL games, and against Spurs in the FA Cup) then he'll make you a very nice profit.

Rooney. Played last EPL match, rested for cup games so he can play for the EPL match vs Swans (this is my gut instince).

Should I transfer in Cazorla or go for Ozil (would require a hit downgrading RavMo/Rooney/Sterling - ideally Sterling assuming RavMo is going to play)

I was really considering Santi but had the funds for Ozil so went with him, I would go for Santi in your position as it saves wasting another transfer to get Ozil.

Think I agree, and with WC yet to use can always bring him in. Main worry is Ozil rises 0.3+ from now till then.

On a WC. What would you do with Rooney and Evans? Selling price £16m. Want Aguero when fit. Should I just swap Rooney for Negredo, bench Evans then downgrade someone later to do Negredo > Aguero?

    Szczesny (Marshall)

    Koscielny Azpilicueta Nastasic (Evans Chester)

    Hazard Ozil Silva Oscar (Livermore)

    Suarez Rooney JRod

    What would you do?

Keep him your bench is good and he's a good placeholder for aguero

Thanks, hoping he starts anyway so will make sure my subs are in correct order.

Need to find 0.9 for Aguero. Who is first on the downgrade list? Oscar to Eriksen/Lallana/Cabaye/Ramsey?
